KATHERINE MAYER
Katherine Laird Mayer, 78, Independence, died Friday, May 2, 1997.
Mrs. Mayer was born March 11, 1919, in Metropolis, Ill., and was a lifelong Independence resident. She was a cafeteria manager for the Independence School District, retiring in 1978. She was a member of the Beta Sigma Phi Sorority and Fairmount United Methodist Church.
Her survivors include a daughter, Barbara C. Fordham, Independence; two sons, John Robert Farris, Independence, and Steven Taylor Farris, Blue Springs; nine grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
Services will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Carson Independence Chapel. Burial will be in Woodlawn cemetery. Friends may call from 6:30 to 8:30 tonight at the chapel. The family suggests contributions to the Katherine L. Mayer Memorial Fund at the church.
GLORIA M. NOLAND
Gloria Marie Noland, 65, Independence, died Saturday, May 3, 1997, at her home.
Mrs. Noland was born in Kansas City and was a lifelong area resident. She was a homemaker and had worked at Unity Village and Westinghouse. She was a volunteer at the Medical Center of Independence and attended the St. Mary`s Catholic Church and St. Matthews Methodist Church.
Her survivors include two sons, Garry Noland, Independence, and Gregg Noland, Topeka;one daughter, Gwendolyn Thatcher, and her parents, Harry and Marie Renick, allof Independence; and 10 grandchildren.
Graveside services were today at Oak Grove cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the Columbia Independence Regional Health Center Hospice. Arrangements were under the direction of Royer Funeral Home, Oak Grove.
DONALD L. O`RILEY
Donald Lee O`Riley, 52, Independence, died Friday, May 2, 1997, in Kansas City.
Mr. O`Riley was born March 12, 1945, in Topeka. He graduated from Northeast High School in Kansas City and was signed by the former Kansas City Athletics baseball team to a professional contract. In 1968, he was drafted by the Kansas City Royals in the expansion draft and played in the major leagues in 1971-72. He was an avid golfer and sportsman.
His survivors include his wife, Marquita E. O`Riley of the home; a son, Michael P. O`Riley, Raytown; a daughter, Angela M. O`Riley, San Antonio, Texas; two stepsons, Daniel J. Redmond, Rolla, Mo., and Brian J. Redmond, Independence; his mother and stepfather, Laura M. and Arthur L. Moore, Independence; and a brother, James A. O`Riley, Blue Springs; a sister, Patricia L. Heffern, Independence.
Services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Nativity of Mary Catholic Church. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 tonight at D.W. Newcomer`s Sons Floral Hills Chapel, Kansas City, where the rosary will be said at 7 p.m. Burial will be in Floral Hills Memorial Gardens, Kansas City
OPAL RAMBO
Opal Cordia Rambo, 76, Orrick, Mo., died Friday, May 2, 1997, at North Kansas City Hospital.
Mrs. Rambo was born on Sept. 21, 1920, in Smithville. She was a homemaker. She was preceded in death by her husband, George Rambo. Her survivors include two sons, Orland "Gus" Rambo, Kansas City, and Glen R.Rambo, Orrick; three daughters, Nancy Rambo, and Erma I. Rambo, both of Orrick, and Carol S. Hohenfeldt, Kansas City; two brothers, Raymond Brown and Clifford Brown; six grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
Services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at Webb-Freer Funeral Home, Blue Springs. Burial will be in Blue Springs cemetery. Friends may call from 6 to 8 tonight a the chapel.
ARTHUR O. SPORLEDER
Arthur O. Sporleder, 81, Independence, died Friday, May 2, 1997, at the Medical Center of Independence.
Mr. Sporleder was born Oct. 6, 1915, in St. Louis. He was a design engineer and inventor most of his life and for the past eight years he was C.E.O. of Firefly Inc. of Independence. He was anArmy Air Corps veteran of World War II.
His survivors include his wife, Virginia Sporleder of the home; two sons, Arthur J. Sporleder, Blue Springs, and Charles Sporleder, Eagleville, Mo.; three daughters, Lois K. Andrews, Independence, Leilani J. Matthews, Dickinson, Texas, and Juniper Sporleder, Maui, Hawaii;six grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
Cremation. Arrangements are under the direction of the Speaks Suburban Chapel.
DONALD L. VOGT
Donald Lee Vogt, 46, Blue Springs, formerly of Blue Springs, died Friday, May 2, 1997, at the Medical Center of Independence.
Mr. Vogt was born June 16, 1950, in Marshall, Mo., and had lived most of his life in Independence and Blue Springs. He was a farmer and member of the Messiah Lutheran Church.
His survivors include his wife, Teresa Vogt, and a daughter, Megan Vogt, both of the home; two sons, Scott Leakey and Brian Leakey, both of Independence; two sisters, Marilyn Mueller and Marlene Vogt, both of Kansas City; and two grandchildren, Griffen Leakey and Madalyn Leakey.

VIOLA A. BRUNSON
Viola A. Brunson, 95, Independence, died Sunday, March 2, 1997, at the Independence Manor Care Center.
Mrs. Brunson was born Dec. 17, 1901, in Morse, Iowa, and had lived in Independence most of her life. She wasa member of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. She was preceded in death by her husband, Claud C. Brunson in 1993.
Her survivors include a son, Delbert L. Brunson, Independence; two daughters, Margaret Rathmann, Moberly, Mo., and Claudia Anders, Independence; six grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.
Services will be 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Speaks Suburban Chapel. Burial will be in Mound Grove cemetery. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 tonight at the chapel. The family suggests contributions to the Gift of Hope Hospice.
MARTHA G. CHANDLER
Martha Gertrude Chandler, 76, Carthage, Mo., died Sunday, March 2, 1997, at St. John`s Regional Medical Center, Joplin, Mo.
Mrs. Chandler was born April 8, 1920, in Jasper County, Mo., and lived in Sarcoxie, Mo., before moving to Carthage 34 years ago. She worked for St. Luke`s Nursing Home in Carthage for 18 years, retiring in 1990. She was a member of the Morningside Baptist Church, Sarcoxie. She was preceded in death by her husband, Faye Chandler.
Her survivors include two sons, Don Chandler, Independence, and Paul Chandler, Lenior City, Tenn.; two daughters, Lana Williams, Diamond, Mo., and Sue Novacich, Edwardsville, Ill.; a brother, Bob Triplett, Sarcoxie; a sister, Lavonne Maddox, Columbia, Mo.; 10 grandchildren, including Jeff Chandler and Melinda Nash of Independence; and three great-grandchildren.
Services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Housh Funeral Home, Sarcoxie. Burial will be in Sarcoxie cemetery. Friends may call from 7 to 8 tonight at the funeral home.
KENNETH A. COLE
Kenneth A. Cole, 52, Higginsville, Mo., died Sunday, March 2, 1997, in Higginsville.
Mr. Cole was born Sept. 3, 1944, in Kansas City and had lived in Higginsville for 35 years. He worked for Lafayette County Enterprises and attended St. Mary`s Catholic Church in Higginsville.
His survivors include his parents, Wilbur and Dorothy Cole, Independence; and three brothers, Gerald W. Cole, Blue Springs, Danny L. Cole, Overland Park, Kan., and Ronald D. Cole, Kansas City.

DOROTHY M. HUFFMON
Dorothy M. Huffmon, 66, Chillicothe, Mo., died Monday, March 3, 1997, at Livingston Manor Care Center, Chillicothe.
Mrs. Huffmon was born June 26, 1930, in Carroll County, Mo.
Her survivors include a twin sister, Doris Campbell, and two nieces, Linda K. Linville and Sheri Seevers, all of Buckner; five great-nieces and nephews; one great-great-niece; and one great-great-great-niece. CATHERN E. LUKENS
Cathern Emma "Tommie" Lukens, 89, Columbia, Mo., formerly of this area, died Friday, Feb. 21, 1997, at Lenoir Health Care Center.
Mrs. Lukens was born Jan. 1, 1908, in Holden, Mo. She was a registered nurse and had worked for the Independence Sanitarium and Hospital, Trans World Airlines and Lake City Army Ammunition Plant. Since moving to Columbia, she was a volunteer at Boone Hospital Center. She was a member of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and was affiliated with the Professional Nurses Association. She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Harland Lukens.
Her survivors include a daughter, Mary Jo Westwood, Columbia; three grandchildren, Gregg Westwood, Boulder, Colo., Jeffrey Westwood, Dallas, and Stephanie Rothermich, Auxvasse, Mo.; a great-granddaughter, Amanda Westwood; and several nieces and nephews.
Friends may call from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday at Partridge Hall at the RLDS Stone Church. Graveside services will be held at Woodlawn cemetery following the visitation. The family suggests contributions to the Central Missouri Humane Society, 616 Big Bear Blvd., Columbia, Mo. 65202.

Emily R. Pixley, 70, Independence, died Monday, March 3, 1997, at The Groves.
Mrs. Pixley was born March 13, 1926, in Independence and was a lifelong Independence resident. She was a homemaker. Her husband, William H. Pixley, died in 1992.
Her survivors include a son, Lee Roy Stevens, Hollister, Mo.; two sisters, Mary Elizabeth Rush, Weaubleau, Mo., and Kathleen Nash, Independence; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Richard O. Rodgers, 84, Holden, Mo., died Sunday, March 2, 1997, at the Medical Center of Independence.
Mr. Rodgers was born Nov. 21, 1912, in Independence. He was a member of the Holden Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his wife, Esther M. Rodgers in 1991, and two daughters, Barbara Jeanine Willis in 1958 and Ethel Juanita Stephens in 1996.
His survivors include a son, Richard A. Rodgers, Blairstown, Mo.; three daughters, Wilma L. Rodgers, Ivory Coast, Africa, Ruth M. Parker, Kansas City, and Virginia S. Lynn, Blairstown; a sister, Juanita Casey, Sugar Creek; 16 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Kenneth A. Cole, 52, Higginsville, Mo., died Sunday, March 2, 1997, in Higginsville.
Mr. Cole was born Sept.3, 1944, in Kansas City and had lived the past 35 years in Higginsville. He worked at Lafayette County Enterprises. He attended St. Mary`s Catholic Church in Higginsville.

Betty Adeline McDonald Gross, 72, Odessa, died Sunday, March 2, 1997, at St. Mary`s Hospital of Blue Springs.
Mrs. Gross was born Sept. 22, 1924, in Salida, Colo., and had lived in Kansas City before moving to Odessa five years ago. She was a cashier for 32 years with Time D.C. Trucking before retiring in 1975. She was a member of the First Christian Church, Odessa.
Her survivors include her husband, Charles H. Gross of the home; three daughters, Christine Rinehart, Odessa, Karen Kunz, Omaha, Neb., and Connie McCormick, Lee`s Summit; a brother, Wendall McDonald, Nokomis, Fla.; four sisters, Twyla Clemmons, Kansas City, Wilma Dieckhoff, Higginsville, Frances Mahoney, Flint, Mich., and Kay Skinner, Lexington, Mo.; and three grandchildren.

CATHERN E. LUKENS
Cathern Emma "Tommie" Lukens, 89, Columbia, Mo., died Friday, Feb. 21, 1997, at the Lenoir Health Care Center.

ARNOLD L. SHIPPY
Arnold Labert Shippy, 81, Blue Springs, died Monday, March 3, 1997, at St. Mary`s Hospital of Blue Springs.
Mr. Shippy was born March 10, 1915, in Grain Valley. He was a past commodore of the Jacomo Pontoon Club and was a member of the Blue Springs Elks Lodge 2509. He retired in 1981 from Allied Signal. He was a member of the Grain Valley Christian Church. His wife, Isabel Shippy, died Feb. 9, 1991.
His survivors include a stepson, Dale Titus, Odessa; and two step granddaughters, Dana Withall and Stephanie Hilton.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Webb-Freer Funeral Home. Burial will be in Oakland cemetery. Friends may call from 1 to 2 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. The family suggests contributions to St. Mary`s Manor or to St. Mary`s Hospital.
