GARY N. COE SR.

Gary N. Coe Sr., 45, Independence, died Monday, March 9, 1998, at the Independence Regional Health Care Center.

Mr. Coe was born July 27, 1952, in Kansas City and was a lifelong Independence resident. He worked for Overnite Merchandizer for seven years. He was a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps. He was preceded in death by a son, Lawrence in 1973.

His survivors include his wife, Minnie Coe, Blue Springs; two sons, Christopher Kidwell and Gary Coe Jr., both of Blue Springs; two daughters, Stephanie Schroeder, Lexington, Mo., and Candace Coe, Blue Springs; his mother, Verda Wallace, Independence; his paternal grandmother, Bernice Scherlinger, Nevada, Mo.; eight sisters, Vickie Smith, Mary Hicks, Kathy Morris and Donna Wallace, all of Independence, Marie Cantrell, Blue Mound, Kan., Leslie Roberts, Maysville, Mo., Lori Smith, Nevada, and Suzanna Smith, Kirksville, Mo.; five brothers, Jimmy Wallace, Blue Springs, David Swan, Otto Modlin and Paul Modlin and Chris Birt, all of Nevada; and five grandchildren.

Services will be 10 a.m. Friday at the George C. Carson & Sons Independence Chapel. Burial will be in Brooking cemetery, Raytown. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 tonight at the chapel.

RUTH M. ESSIG

Ruth M. Essig, 95, Blue Springs, died Tuesday, March 10, 1998, at the St. Mary`s Manor Nursing home.

Mrs. Essig was born in Missouri Valley, Iowa, and had lived in the Independence area since 1920. Mrs. Essig had been a registered nurse at the Independence Sanitarium Hospital, a nurse for Dr. Vance Link and a private duty nurse retiring in 1970. She was a member of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, Lee`s Summit congregation. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ammon M. Essig in 1972.

Her survivors include a son, Ed Essig, Oak Grove; two daughters, Florence L. Richards, Morristown, N.J., and Carolyn A. Curtis, Kingsport, Tenn.; 10 grandchildren, Jan Matthews, Barb Brown, Mark Richards, Linda White, Mike Curtis, Elaine Curtis-Quick, Laura Miner, Ruthann Essig, David Essig and Susan Gingell; and 17 great-grandchildren.

Services will be 1:30 p.m. Friday at the Speaks Suburban Chapel. Burial will be in Mound Grove cemetery. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 tonight at the chapel. The family suggests contributions to the Oak Valley Country Day School, 3014 S. Outer Road, Oak Grove, Mo. 64057.

BETTY L. MILLER

Betty Lee Miller, 71, Golden, Mo., formerly of Independence, died Monday, March 9, 1998, at her home.

Mrs. Miller was born Sept. 19, 1926, in Joplin, Mo. She was a dental receptionist.

Her survivors include her husband of 54 years, John Miller of the home; a daughter, Teresa Smith, Golden; and two granddaughters.

A celebration remembrance will be at 3 p.m. March 22 at the Heritage Park Condominium Clubhouse, 4007 S. Crysler, Independence. Arrangements are under the direction of New Salem Funeral Home.

LUCILLE SHIELDS

Lucille Shields, 61, Independence, died Monday, March 9, 1998, at the Independence Care Center.

Mrs. Shields was born April 23, 1936, in Forsyth, Mo. She was a homemaker. She was preceded in death by her husband, Fred J. Shields in 1996.

Her survivors include two sons, Terry Monteer, Harrisonville, Mo., and Frank Shields, Raytown; three stepchildren, Frances E. Shields and Jeanette E. McAfee, both of Independence, and Gilbert N. Shields, Joplin, Mo.; a brother, Jerry Hunt, seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

There are no services; cremation. Arrangements are under the direction of Speaks Midtown Chapel.

JOSEPHINE SHAFER

Josephine Canfield Shafer, 64, St. Charles, Mo., formerly of this area, died Tuesday, Feb. 9, 1999, at her home.

Mrs. Shafer had worked for Safeway grocery stores in Independence for 20 years. She was preceded in death by her husband, Alva Shafer.

Her survivors include one daughter, Cindy Horn, St. Charles; one son, Richard Shafer, Independence; and four grandchildren, Justin, Amy, Sarah and Mary.

A funeral Mass was held Feb. 13 at St. Peter Catholic Church, St. Charles. Burial was in the church cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the family in care of the Paul Funeral Home, 240 N. Kingshighway, St. Charles, Mo 63301.

HELEN M. HOPPER

Helen Marie Hopper, 68, Independence, died Tuesday, April 21, 1998, in Red Oak, Iowa.

Mrs. Hopper was born March 7, 1930, in Pottawattamie County, Iowa.

Her survivors include her husband, Chuck Hopper; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Jan and Kevin Kast, Teresa and Sean Reilley, and Geri Scott; one son and daughter-in-law, Bill and Sun Hopper; and 13 grandchildren.

Services will be 10 a.m. Monday at Nativity of Mary Catholic Church. Burial will be in Mount Olivet cemetery, Raytown. Friends may call from 4 to 5:30 p.m. Sunday at the church, where a rosary will be said at 5 p.m. The family suggests contributions to the church or the ALS Association. Arrangements are under the direction of Sheil Colonial Funeral Home, Raytown.

EVELYN D. MORTON

Evelyn D. Morton, 77, Sibley, died Wednesday, April 22, 1998, at Independence Regional Health Center.

Mrs. Morton had lived in the Greater Kansas City area most of her life. She worked in the Catalog Department of Sears & Roebuck in Kansas City for 20 years, retiring in 1986. Her husband, Glenn A. Morton, died in 1989.

Her survivors include four sons, Ray Morton and Jimm Morton, both of Independence, John Morton, Buckner, and Dan Morton, Austin, Texas; one daughter, Gwenn Fox, Houston; one sister, Polly Adams, Independence; one brother, Virgil Rodgers, Freeman, Mo.; an aunt, Alberta Williams, Independence; 10 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Services will be 9 a.m. Saturday at the Speaks Suburban Chapel. Burial will be in Mount Washington cemetery. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 tonight at the chapel.

ELLA F. SCHWAB

Ella F. Schwab, 91, Kansas City, formerly of Independence, died Tuesday, April 21, 1998, at the Truman Medical Center East Care Center, Kansas City.

Mrs. Schwab was born in Independence and was a lifelong area resident. She was a member of Independence 329 Order of the Eastern Star, Social Order of Beauceant 150 and the Unity Village Chapel, Lee`s Summit. She was a past member of the Ararat Shrine Needleguild. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lewis H. Schwab Sr. in 1957, and a son, Lewis H. Schwab Jr. in 1987.

Her survivors include a daughter, Betty J. Foster, Independence; a brother, Carl Maness, Fairmount, Mo.; five grandchildren, Stephen R. Foster, Stuart G. Foster, Stanley D. "Dino" Foster, Dr. Gary G. Schwab and Gail Whitehead; and eight great-grandchildren.

Services will be 1 p.m. Saturday at the Speaks Suburban Chapel. Burial will be in Mount Washington cemetery. Friends may call from noon to 1 p.m. Saturday at the chapel. The family suggests contributions to the Leukemia Society of America.

JAMES M. "MARTY" BELTZ

James Martin "Marty" Beltz, 41, Belle Plaine, Kan., formerly of Independence, died Friday, May 1, 1998, in rural north Belle Plaine.

Mr. Beltz was born Aug. 21, 1956, in Independence. He was a plumber for J-Beard Mechanical.

His survivors include his wife, Shelly Kay Beltz, and four sons, J.J. Beltz, Johnathan Beltz, Justin Beltz and Jesse Beltz, all of the home; his mother and stepfather, Gerry and Ted Liley, Berryville, Ark.; his father and stepmother, Arland and Elva Beltz, Independence; two brothers, Terry Beltz, Camberland, Mo., and Shelby Beltz, Berryville, Ark.; two half brothers, Rick Liley, Belle Plaine, and Mark Liley, Berryville; two stepbrothers, James Hamm and John Hamm, both of Independence; and a sister, Patricia Beltz, Mayfield, Kan.

Services were Tuesday at the Hatfield-Smith Funeral Home, Belle Plaine. Burial was in Belle Plaine cemetery.

CALVIN F. CHRISTIAN

Calvin F. Christian, 81, Independence, died Tuesday, May 5, 1998, at his home.

Mr. Christian was born in Fairmount Junction, Mo., and had lived in this area most of his life. He was retired from the Universal Construction Co., after having owned his own business for 22 years. He was a member of Carpenters Local 61, Loyal Order of Moose, Lodge 10, and the Lutheran church. He was a past member of the Kansas City Junior Chamber of Commerce, Breakfast at 8 Club and the Elks Lodge.

His survivors include his wife, Delores Christian of the home; two daughters, Carla Guilliams and Judith Dillon, both of Independence; two sons, Thomas Christian, Jacksonville, Fla., and Jon Christian, Pleasant Hill, Mo.; three sisters, Bonnie Breach, Peggy Durham and Betty Rowan, all of California; seven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Graveside services will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Floral Hills Memorial Gardens. Friends may call from 10 to 11 a.m. Thursday at D.W. Newcomer`s Sons Floral Hills Chapel, Kansas City. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to Moose Lodge 10 of Sugar Creek.

ROBERTA M. "BERT" EGGERS

Roberta Martha "Bert" Eggers, 71, Kansas City, died Tuesday, May 5, 1998, at her home.

Mrs. Eggers was born April 29, 1927, and was a lifelong area resident. She was a 1945 graduate of Northeast High School, and attended Grace and Glory Bible School. In 1957, she and her husband, Arthur Eggers, began to pastor the church they have led for the past 42 years. She was a Brownie and Girl Scout leader and taught Sunday school at an old inner-city Christian church. She was a club sponsor with the Kansas City Youth for Christ in the Nowlin and Van Horn schools. She worked with two Billy Graham Crusades. She was involved in vacation Bible schools, summer church retreats and annual Memorial Day reunion services.

Her survivors include her husband of 50 years, Arthur Eggers, Kansas City; two daughters, Rebecca L. Jones, Blue Springs, and Linda G. DeSimio, Raytown; three sisters, Dorothy Stewart, Wheatland, Mo., Betty Huff, Windsor, Mo., and Lois Piper, Braymer, Mo.; two brothers, Paul Fellers, Independence, and Charles Fellers, Braymer; four grandchildren, Richard Joseph Nash Jr., Martha Lynn Humphress, Sarah Joyce Winkler and Michael Arthur DeSimio; and five great-grandchildren, Keegan Quinn Nash, Amanda Diane Humphress, Hannah Kerrin Winkler, Zachary Joel Winkler, and Faith Alisson DeSimio; and numerous other relatives.

Services will be 10 a.m. Friday at Park Lawn Funeral Home, Kansas City. Burial will be in Memorial Park cemetery, Kansas City. Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. The family suggests contributions to the Grace Christian Assembly Church, 2309 Blue Ridge Blvd., Kansas City, Mo. 64129.

MYLES D. HAYWARD

Myles Denton Hayward, infant son of Gregory Denton and Gayle Hayward of Avondale, Mo., died Saturday, May 2, 1998, at St. Luke`s Hospital, Kansas City.

Myles was born April 30, 1998, at St. Luke`s Hospital, in Kansas City.

His survivors also include his maternal grandparents, William A. and Nancy Lawson, Garden City, Mo.; paternal grandmother, Sharon Wray, Independence; paternal grandfather and stepgrandmother, Denton and Margaret Hayward, Odessa; maternal great-grandmothers, Jeanne Antes, Urich, Mo., and Mickey Lawson, Garden City; paternal great-grandfather and stepgreat-grandmother, William E. and Ruth Lawson, Lillian, Ala.; and paternal great-grandmother, Irma Miles, Independence.

Graveside services were Tuesday at the Woodlawn cemetery. Services were under the direction of the Dickey Funeral Home, Harrisonville, Mo.

HAROLD D. TAYLOR

Harold Durant Taylor, 70, Independence, died Monday, May 4, 1998.

Mr. Taylor was born June 1, 1927, in Independence and was a lifelong area resident. He retired as captain in 1982 from the Independence Police Department after 26 years of service, and was a member of Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 1. He was a Marine Corps veteran.

His survivors include his wife, Doris Lee Taylor of the home; a daughter and son-in-law, Susan Lee and Walter A. Westwood; two grandchildren, Tina Lee Head and Jason A. Westwood; and four great-grandchildren, Khrysta Lee Head, Samanthya Jo Head, Troy Allen Head and Jacob Allen Westwood.

Services will be 2 p.m. Thursday at the George C. Carson & Sons Independence Chapel. Burial will be in Mount Washington cemetery. Friends may call from 6:30 to 8:30 tonight at the chapel.

MARIE S. THOMPSON

Marie S. Scott Thompson, 94, Independence, died Monday, May 4, 1998, at her home.

Mrs. Thompson was born Jan. 16, 1904, in Indian Territory in Oklahoma, and had lived in Independence for 53 years. She was a member and worker at Maywood Baptist Church for approximately 50 years. Her husband, Welch M. Thompson, died in 1978.

She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Alene and Jack Sage, Independence.

Services will be 1 p.m. Friday at the church. Burial will be in Mount Washington cemetery. Friends may call from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the George C. Carson & Sons Independence Chapel. The family suggests contributions to the church.

CHESTER E. THOMSON

Chester Edward Thomson, 73, Kansas City, died Tuesday, May 5, 1998, at Independence Regional Health Center.

Mr. Thomson was born Sept. 18, 1924, in Kansas City. He retired from Milbank Manufacturing Co. after 37 years of service. He also worked part time for Wells Fargo for more than 20 years, for Mallow-TRV Dental and the Kansas City Auto Auction. He was a 1943 graduate of North Kansas City High School, and was a member of BMW Motorcycle Owners of America. He served in the Navy as a quartermaster third class on the USS Zuni in World War II.

His survivors include his wife, Loretta Marlene Thomson of the home; two daughters, Roxanne Lawson, Lee`s Summit, and Theresa Todd, Blue Springs; a son, Bryan Thomson, Blue Springs; a brother, Jack L. Thomson, Odessa; and five grandchildren.

Services will be 10 a.m. Friday at the George C. Carson & Sons Independence Chapel. Burial will be in Floral Hills cemetery, Kansas City. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday at the chapel.
