THOMAS R. LUCAS

Thomas R. Lucas, 84, Independence, died Tuesday, June 10, 1997.

Mr. Lucas was born May 11, 1912. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the 5th Army under Gen. George Patton in the Battle of the Bulge.

His survivors include his wife, Hazel Lucas; two sons, Paul Lucas and Joe Ward; three grandchildren, Gene Allen Ward, Jennifer Dawn Lucas and Jessica Ann Lucas; two great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Services will be 1 p.m. Friday at Carter Funerals/Earp & Sons Truman Road Chapel, Kansas City. Friends may call from 5 to 7 tonight at the chapel.

VIVIAN L. ATHEY

Vivian L. Athey, 91, Independence, died Sunday, June 1, 1997, at Rosewood Care Center.

Mrs. Athey was born Nov. 8, 1905, in El Dorado Springs, Mo., and had lived in Whitter, S.D., Butler and Warrensburg in Missouri before moving to Independence. She had been a charter member of the Slover Park and West College RLDS congregations and was presently a member of the East Alton RLDS congregation. She was active in her church, working in the Women`s Department and Sunday school activities. She was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, Odess L. Athey in 1990.

Her survivors include one son, Charles Athey, Overland Park, Kan.; one daughter, Vera Kramer, Independence; two sisters, Wilma Lotz, Independence, and Emily Robinson, Adrian, Mo.; five grandchildren, Karen Geoghegan, Kim Kramer Laeupple, Phillip Athey, Westley Kramer and Bradford Athey; five great-grandchildren; five nieces; and two nephews.

Services will be 10 a.m. Thursday at the Speaks Midtown Chapel. Burial will be in Mound Grove cemetery. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday at the chapel. The family suggests contributions to your favorite charity.

MARIO L. BIAGIOLI

Mario L. Biagioli, 74, Lee`s Summit, died Sunday, June 1, 1997, at St. Joseph Health Center.

Mr. Biagioli was born Aug. 14, 1922, in Brooklyn, N.Y. He retired from Lady Baltimore Food Distributing after 28 years of service. He was a member of St. Matthew Apostle Catholic Church and an Army veteran of World War II.

His survivors include his wife, Mary Biagioli of the home; four sons, Robert M. Biagioli and John A. Biagioli, both of Independence, Paul E. Biagioli, Overland Park, Kan., and Michael L. Biagioli, Kansas City; two sisters, Ann Gerardi, Brooklyn, and Diana Puleo, Floral Park, N.Y.; four brothers, Michael Biagioli, Staten Island, N.Y., Emilio Biagioli, Mineola, N.Y., Adrian Biagioli, Bladwin, N.Y., and Louis Biagioli, Copiague, N.Y.; and six grandchildren.

Mass will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at the church. Burial will be in Mount Olivet cemetery, Raytown. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Carson Blue Ridge Chapel, where a rosary will be said at 7 p.m. HENRY H. GRAHAM

Henry H. Graham, 91, Independence, died Sunday, June 1, 1997, at the Medical Center of Independence.

Mr. Graham was born May 9, 1906, in Smithville, Tenn., and had lived in Independence most of his life. He was owner/operator of the Graham Welding Shop for more than 40 years. He was a member of Fairmount Christian Church and Mount Washington Masonic Lodge 614 and a member and past president of the Inter-City Kiwanis Club. He was the sculptor of the 10-foot, 700-pound American Indian armed with a raised tomahawk in his left hand and a football in his right. The sculpture, the idea he got from a Chief`s emblem, stood at the intersection of 15th Street and Sterling Avenue for many years. His wife, Kathryn Graham, died in 1991.

His survivors include three sons, James A. Graham, Lee`s Summit, Robert H. Graham, Allison Park, Pa., and Roy G. Graham, Holts Summit, Mo.; one sister, Nellie Lawson, West Helena, Ark.; five grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Graveside services will be2 p.m. Thursday at Mount Washington cemetery. The family suggests contributions to your favorite charity. Arrangements are under the direction of the Carson Independence Chapel.

BERTHA HIGHBERGER

Bertha "Pauline" Highberger, 81, Kansas City, died Sunday, June 1, 1997, at Columbia Independence Regional HealthCenter.

Ms. Highberger was a lifelong area resident. She owned and operated Pauline`s Cafe for many years on Truman Road.

Services will be 10 a.m. Thursday at Our Lady of Peace Church, 1029 Bennington, Kansas City. Burial will be in Mount Olivet cemetery, Raytown. Friends may call from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Charter Funerals/Earp & Sons Chapel, Kansas City, where a rosary will be said at 7 p.m.

JESSE C. HINTON

Jesse Clifton "Poppy" Hinton, 84, Blue Springs, died Monday, June 2, 1997, at St. Mary`s Hospital of Blue Springs.

Mr. Hinton was born Dec. 8, 1912, and was a lifelong area resident. He was a member of the Plaza Heights Baptist Church, Standard Oil Retirees Club and Independence Masonic Lodge 76. He was an Army veteran. His wife, Mildred L. "Mimi" Hinton, died in 1993.

His survivors include one son, Gary Hinton, Blue Springs; one sister, Dorothy Barker, Independence; two grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Services will be 10 a.m. Thursday at the George C. Carson & Sons Independence Chapel. Burial will be in Blue Springs cemetery. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday at the chapel, where Masonic services will be held at 8 p.m. The family suggests contributions to the Arthritis Foundation.

MATTHEW B. HOADLEY

Matthew Benton Hoadley, 18, Independence, died Sunday, June 1, 1997, at Columbia Independence Regional Health Center.

Mr. Hoadley was born Oct. 26, 1978, in Independence and was a lifelong Independence resident. He had been a member of the Boy Scouts of America and the Eastgate Christian Church.

His survivors include his parents, John and Susan Hoadley, and one sister, Elizabeth Hoadley, all of the home; his paternal grandmother, Ruth Hoadley, and maternal grandparents, Bill and Ruthanna Heiser, all of Atchison, Kan.

Services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Speaks Suburban Chapel. Burial will be in Woodlawn cemetery. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 tonight at the chapel. The family suggests contributions to the Kansas City Association for the Deaf and Blind, 4417 Moats Ave., Kansas City, Mo. 64133.

MARY K. LEMEN

Mary Katherine Lemen, 75, Raytown, died Monday, June 2, 1997, at her home.

Mrs. Lemen was born Feb. 2, 1922, in Lee`s Summit. She was a clerk for the Jackson County Collection Department for 23 years, retiring in 1987. She was a member of the Woods Chapel Baptist Church.

Her survivors include one son, Carl W. Lemen, Oak Grove; one daughter, Donna Duncan, Belton, Mo.; two brothers, Don Myres, Blue Springs, and Roger Myres, Independence; one sister, Olive Street, Independence; two grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Graveside services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at Blue Springs cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Webb-Freer Funeral Home, Blue Springs.

JAMES H. LOOMIS

James H. "Jim" Loomis, 70, Independence, died Thursday, May 29, 1997, at the Medical Center of Independence.

Mr. Loomis was born on Jan. 17, 1927, in Galena, Mo., and lived in Independence most of his life. He worked for the City Block Co. for 18 years and for Barbour Concrete for 15 years before retiring in 1981.

His survivors include his wife, Dorothy Loomis of the home; eight daughters, Susie Morton and Penny Barreto, both of Blue Springs, Donna Kay Klotz and Bobbie Joe Loomis, both of Independence, Rita Dunscombe, Hamilton, Mo., Mary Ann Rausch, Olathe, Kan., Verdie Rose Schnoor, Kansas City, and Linda Ellis, Otterville, Mo.; two sons, Danny Loomis and Randy Loomis, both of Kansas City, Kan.; one stepdaughter, Suanne Bradberry, Fullion, Texas; two sisters, Ellen Holt, Galena, and Margie Schneider, Springfield, Mo.; one brother, Gene Loomis, Galena; 25 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Services were Monday at the George C. Carsons and Sons Independence Chapel. Burial was in Oak Ridge Memory Gardens.

ROBERT L. MALLINSON

Robert L. "Bob" Mallinson, 85, Oak Grove, formerly of Sugar Creek, died Sunday, June 1, 1997, at the Community Care of America in Oak Grove.

Mr. Mallinson was born Dec. 23, 1911, in Sugar Creek and lived there until moving to Oak Grove one year ago. He worked for the Amoco (Standard) Oil Co. for 28 years, retiring in 1972.

His survivors include his wife, Dora E. Mallinson, Sugar Creek; three sons, J.W. Mallinson, Grain Valley, Robert L. Mallinson Jr., Sugar Creek, and E. Bradley Mallinson, Lexington, Mo.; two daughters, Roberta E. Masters, Buckner, and Edna F. Claibourn, Independence; three brothers, Vernon Mallinson, Edwards, Mo., and David Mallinson, Fristoe, Mo.; one sister, Dorothy MacDaniel, Hillsboro, Mo.; 11 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.

Services will be 3 p.m. Thursday at the George C. Carson & Sons Independence Chapel. Burial will be in Mound Grove cemetery. Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the chapel.

MITZI A. OVERMAN

Mitzi Ann Overman, 67, Independence, died Saturday, May 31, 1997, at the Medical Center of Independence.

Mrs. Overman was born Sept. 29, 1929, in Independence. She was a 1946 graduate of Northeast High School, attended William Jewell College, Liberty, Mo., and graduated from the University of Missouri, where she was a member of the Gamma Phi Beta sorority. She taught school at Rock Creek School and Independence Junior High School. She served on the boards of the Junior Service League, American Association of University Women, Independence Chamber of Commerce, Jackson County Historical Society and the Mid-America Regional Council. She was the first woman elected to the Independence City Council, serving as council woman-at-large from 1974 to 1978. She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Vaile Historical Society, Bingham Waggoner Historical Society, National Trust for Historic Preservation, Friends of the 1859 Jail Museum, and the Chicago & Alton Depot Society. She was director of the first revitalized Santa-Cali-Gon Days celebration in 1970 and recently was coordinator and served as mistress of ceremonies for the Northeast High School 50 year reunion. She was preceded in death by a son, John C. Overman, M.D. Her survivors include her husband, John M. Overman of the home; one son, James G. Overman, Kansas City; and one brother, James Watt.

Memorial services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Trinity Episcopal Church of Independence, 409 N. Liberty St. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the church.

HERBERT G. SOULE

Herbert Galon Soule, 75, Sugar Creek, died Sunday, June 1, 1997, at Columbia Independence Regional Health Center.

Mr. Soule was born June 9, 1921, and had lived in Sugar Creek for 47 years. He was a retired self-employed general contractor and a member of Carpenter`s Union Local 61 for almost 50 years. He was a member of Mount Washington Masonic Lodge, Scottish Rite, Ararat Shrine Temple and the Sugar Creek Business and Civic Club. He was a Navy veteran of World War II and a member of American Legion Post 340.

His survivors include his wife of 49 years, Frances Soule of the home; four sons, Terry Soule, Fort Walton Beach, Fla., Herbert Soule Jr. and Kenneth Soule, both of Sugar Creek, and Ronald Soule, Kansas City; one brother, Wayne Soule, Spencer, Iowa; two sisters, Christina Allwein, Lebanon, Pa., and Vera Newman, Sioux City, Iowa; 16 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.

Services will be 1 p.m. Wednesday at the George C. Carson & Sons Independence Chapel. Burial will be in Mound Grove cemetery. Friends may call from 6:30 to 8:30 tonight at the chapel, where Masonic services will be held at 7 p.m. and American Legion services at 7:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the Sugar Creek Citizens Civic Relief Fund, 103 S. Sterling, Sugar Creek, Mo. 64054.

ESSIE M. HAMMOND

Essie Mae Hammond, 93, Independence, died Thursday, May 22, 1997, at The Groves Care Center, Independence.

Mrs. Hammond had lived in the Vista, Mo., area in St. Clair County before moving to Independence.

Her survivors include a son, LaVergne Hammond, Independence, a daughter, Suzanne Betz, Sugar Creek; nine grandchildren; one step grandchild; and 17 great-grandchildren.

Services will be 1 p.m. Monday at the Sheldon Goodrich Chapel in Osceola, Mo. Burial will be in the Macedonia cemetery, Osceola. Friends may call from 5 to 7 p.m. Saturday at the Grace Christian Church, 2309 Blue Ridge Blvd., Kansas City.

ROBERT L. STUMFOLL

Robert Lee Stumfoll, 67, Hickory, Mo., formerly of Independence, died Tuesday, May 20, 1997, at Trinity Lutheran Hospital in Kansas City.

Mr. Stumfoll was born June 20, 1929, in Pittsburg, Kan., and lived in the Independence area most of his life, moving to Hickory after his retirement. He was a truck driver for Bowen Construction in Independence, retiring in 1980, and was a member of Teamsters Union Local 541. He was also a member of the National Rifle Association and a volunteer fireman for four years at Bentree Harbor, Warsaw, Mo.

His survivors include two sons, Robert Wayne Stumfoll, Blue Springs, and Edward Lee Stumfoll, Independence; five daughters, Diana Renee Teter, Independence, Melissa Kay Stumfoll and Norma Jean Stumfoll, both of Sugar Creek, and Denise and Pamela; his mother, Lena M. Stumfoll, Independence; two sisters, Betty L. Costigan, Blue Springs, and Norma J. Douglas, Independence; 12 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Services were today at New Salem Funeral Home. Burial was in New Salem cemetery.

CRAIG W. BRODY

Craig W. Brody, 38, Grain Valley, died Friday, Nov. 13, 1998, at Kansas University Medical Center.

Mr. Brody was born July 16, 1960, in Worthington, Minn. He was a truck mechanic. He was a member of the Kansas City Baptist Temple, where he actively participated in the People, Health and Wellness ministries. He was a volunteer for the Cancer Institute of Health Midwest and was an avid outdoorsman.

His survivors include his wife, Mary A. Brody, and one daughter, Sarah Brody, both of the home; his parents, Maxine and Donald Brody, Bigelow, Minn.; three sisers, Nancy Henderson, Robbinsdale, Minn., Donna Batye, Ashland, Mo., and Diane Duggan, Liberty, Mo.; a brother, Dale Brody, Blue Springs; and many nieces and nephews.

Services were today at the Kansas City Baptist Temple. Burial will be in Valley Memorial Gardens, Grain Valley.
