GENEVA CABLE

Geneva Cable, 90, Independence, died Wednesday, Dec. 30, 1998, at the Independence Regional Health Center.

Mrs. Cable was born June 3, 1908, in Bevier, Mo., where she spent her early years before moving to Independence in the 1920's. She earned her bachelor's degree in education from Central Missouri State University at the age of 66. She was homemaker and a member of The Groves RLDS congregation.

Her survivors include her husband of 63 years, Gordon Cable of The Groves; a son, James C. Cable, Independence; a daughter, Delores J. Moore, Warsaw, Mo.; a sister, Blanch Cole, Independence; four grandchildren, Matthew and Justin Howe, Susan M. and Karen L. Cable; and a great-grandson, Quinn Cable Hurshman.

Graveside services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at Mound Grove cemetery. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Monday at the Speaks Midtown Chapel. Memorial services will be announced at a later date. Memorial contributions are suggested to the RLDS Temple Endowment Fund.

SYLVIA J. HARDWICK

Sylvia J. Hardwick, 91, Independence, died Sunday, Jan. 31, 1999, at Monterey Park Nursing Home.

Mrs. Hardwick was born Nov. 21, 1907, in Ray County, Mo. She was a homemaker.

Her survivors include two daughters, Barbara Thate, Independence, and Rosetta Joseph, Kansas City; a son, Cleo W. McComas, Mattoon, Ill.; a sister, Dora Eaton, Braymer, Mo.; a grandson, Ron Joseph, Palmdale, Calif.; two granddaughters, Ethel Jane Jackson and Roudina Thomsen; six great-grandsons; and one great-granddaughter.

Services will be 1 p.m. Wednesday at George C. Carson & Sons Independence Chapel. Graveside services will be at 3 p.m. Wednesday in Mount Olive cemetery, Stet, Mo. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 tonight at the chapel.

WILLIAM L. FOWLER

William Lee Fowler, 92, Lee's Summit, formerly of Independence, died Tuesday, Feb. 2, 1999, at the John Knox Village Care Center, Lee's Summit.

Mr. Fowler was born Oct. 11, 1906, in Marshall, Mo., and had lived in Independence since 1945. He worked for the Ford Motor Co. in Claycomo, Mo., for 26 years, retiring in 1971. He was an Army staff sergeant during World War II, and his unit HQ Company 2nd Replacement Depot served in the North Africa, Naples Foggia, Roma Arno, Southern France, Central Europe and the Rhineland campaigns. He was awarded the Good Conduct Medal and five Bronze Stars for the above campaigns. He was a life member of E. Schumann Heink Disabled American Veterans, and a 46-year member of American Legion Post 191, Marshall.

His survivors include one sister, Ethel Mae Cheesman, Lee's Summit; three nephews, Eugene Cheesman, Pleasant Hill, Mo., William C. Cheesman, West Hills, Calif., and Joe Pfister, Lebanon, Mo.; and three nieces, Lois Walden, Lee's Summit, Josephine Rippee, Waynesville, Mo., and Shirley Cheesman, Augusta, Ga.

Services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at the Langsford Funeral Home, Lee's Summit. Burial will be 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Sunset Gardens cemetery, Marshall. Friends may call from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

WILLIAM K. WHITE

William K. White, 87, Grain Valley, died Friday, Feb. 5, 1999, at the Independence Regional Health Center.

Mr. White was born Jan. 4, 1912, in Blue Springs. He had been a carpenter most of his life, and was a member of Carpenter Union 1329 for 48 years. He was a member of the First Christian Church of Blue Springs, where he was elder emertis, and Odd Fellows Lodge 497 in Blue Springs for 60 years. He was the sexton of the Blue Springs cemetery for many years. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Edna Jones White in 1931, his second wife of 56 years, Viola Lemen White in 1995, two sons, A.C.White and Raymond White, and one grandson, Scott Alan White.

His survivors include one daughter, Catherine Wiegers, Higginsville, Mo.; four sons, William D. White, Houston, Kelly White, Lee`s Summit, Roger White, South Jordan, Utah, and John White, Independence; 18 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Services will be 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at the First Christian Church of Blue Springs. Burial will be in Blue Springs cemetery, Friends may call from 6 to 8 tonight at the Webb-Freer Funeral Home. The family suggests contributions to the church or the Odd Fellows Lodge.

HARVEY M. "TEX" CAYLOR

Harvey M. "Tex" Caylor, 70, Independence, died Thursday, March 11, 1999, at his home. He was born Aug. 3, 1928, in Alexandria, S.D. He retired from the General Motors Leeds Plant after 30 years of employment. His survivors include two sons, Harvey Lee Caylor, Independence; Danny Mile Caylor, El Paso, Texas; five daughters, Linda Joyce De Ford, Kansas City; Cinda Elaine Ralston, Carrolton, Texas; Debra Ann Montoya, Story City, Iowa; Kerry Sue Dieler, Story City, Iowa; Angela Elaine Caylor, Independence; six step-children, Gary Paul McGinnis, Jerry Dean McGinnis, Duane McGinnis, Debbie Mae Ault, Tammy Louise Brady, all of Independence, and Stephen Leach, Hardin, Mo.; three brothers, Muriel Caylor, Clifford Caylor, and Harley Caylor, all of Independence. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday at the George C. Carson and Sons Independence Chapel, burial in Mt. Washington cemetery. Friends may call at noon at the chapel.

NORA F. ZANS

Nora F. Zans, 101, Independence, died Saturday, March 13, 1999, at her home.

Mrs. Zans was born in Kansas City. She was a waitress with the Fred Harvey Restaurant for five years, retiring in 1949. She was a member of St. Mark's Catholic Church. Her husband, George Vincent Zans, died in 1966. Her survivors include three sons and two daughters-in-law, John V. and Clara Zans and Paul L. and Janice Zans of Independence, and Richard L. Zans, Kansas City; one brother, Michael McNerney, Lee's Summit; seven grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. Mass of Christian burial will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at the church. Burial will be in Mount Olivet cemetery, Raytown. Friends may call from 7 to 9 tonight at the Muehlebach Funeral Home, Kansas City, where a rosary will be said at 8:30 p.m.

JoANN ARNOLD

JoAnn McSpadden Arnold, 61, Oak Grove, died Tuesday, March 23, 1999, at St. Mary's Hospital of Blue Springs.

Mrs. Arnold was born Dec. 6, 1937, in Henry County, Mo., and had lived in Oak Grove for 36 years. She was a member of the Faith and Joy Family Church, Blue Springs.

Her survivors include her husband, J.D. Arnold, Oak Grove; three children, Jay Arnold, Cinda Shrout and Linda Arnold, all of Oak Grove; her mother, Daisy McSpadden, Leeton, Mo.; two brothers, Kent McSpadden, Liberty, Mo., and Charles McSpadden, Hiawatha, Kan.; and six grandchildren.

Memorial services will be 2 p.m. Saturday at the church, 1710 Main St., Blue Springs.

EDNA M. JOHNSON

Edna M. Johnson, 85, Independence, died Wednesday, March, 24, 1999, at the Independence Regional Health Center.

Mrs. Johnson was born May 29, 1913, in Russell County, Va., and lived in Pleasant Hill, Mo., and Kansas City before moving to Independence. She was an inspector for Hallmark Cards in Kansas City for many years. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Independence for 33 years.

Her survivors include her husband of 54 years, Lester J. Johnson of the home; one brother, Lloyd Stevens, Kansas City; and many other relatives.

Services will be 10 a.m. Friday at the Speaks Midtown Chapel. Graveside services will be 12:30 p.m. Friday at Pleasant Hill cemetery. Friends may call from 9 to 10 a.m. Friday at the chapel. The family requests no flowers.

DONALD B. EHRLICH

Donald Ben Ehrlich, 64, Independence, died Thursday, July 22, 1999 in Independence.

Mr. Ehrlich was born February 8, 1935, in Audrian County, Mo. He graduated from Farber High School in Farber, Mo., and attended the University of Missouri Columbia. He was a radiographer at Osteopathic, University, Lakeside and Vencor Hospitals. He was president of the National and Missouri State Societies of the American Registry of Clinical Radiography Technologists, which merged with the American Society of Radiologic Technologists. A member of First Presbyterian Church in Independence, Ehrlich was ordained Deacon and Elder.

He is survived by his wife, Nancy M. Ehrlich; daughter and son-in-law, Sarah and Wesley Kraus; grandsons, Derek and Jeremy Kraus; brother, William S. Ehrlich; sister, Lois Phillips; seven nephews and one niece.

Memorial services will be at 2 p.m., Monday at First Presbyterian Church. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the Church's Memorial Fund, 100 N. Pleasant, Independence, 64050.

R.J. "RUDY" ROPER

R.J. "Rudy" Roper, 89, Sugar Creek, died Thursday, July 30, 1998.

Mr. Roper was born March 5, 1909, in Sugar Creek, and lived in Sugar Creek his entire life. He served as mayor of Sugar Creek for 40 years, from 1941 to 1981. His administration was instrumental in establishing a new sewer system, paved roads, a swimming pool, parks, as well as the Sugar Creek City Hall, and the Fire Station.

He owned Roper Distributing Company, Inc. and sponsored numerous baseball teams in Sugar Creek. He was a lifelong member of St. Cyril`s Catholic Church in Sugar Creek, a charter member of the Sugar Creek Business & Civic Club, and a member of the Board of Directors of Sterling National Bank. He belonged to the Inter-City Optimist Club, the Knights of Columbus, and the Croatian Fraternal Union of America. He was an honorary member of the Ararat Shrine. He served on the Board of Directors of the Boy Scouts of America, and was past president of the Missouri Municipal League. He was honored as "Mayor of the Year" in 1975 by the Mayor`s Prayer Breakfast in Kansas City. He was preceded in death by his wife of 43 years, Rose Mus Roper in 1988.

His survivors include three daughters, Janice Roper, Phoenix, Ariz., former Missouri State Representative Carole Roper Park, Sugar Creek, and Rita (Roper) Hardy Hortenstine, Dallas, Texas; a son, R.J. Roper Jr., Weatherby Lake, Mo.; a brother, Mike Roper; and three sisters, Katherine Roper Nauser, Rose Roper Frechin, and Mary Roper Mitchell; four grandchildren, Dean Andrisevic, Nick Andrisevic, Jennifer Park Distefano, and Jacqueline Hardy; three great-grandchildren.

Services will be 10 a.m. Monday at St. Cyril`s. Burial will be in Mount Olivet cemetery. Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. on Sunday at George C. Carson & Sons Independence Chapel. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the Sugar Creek Cultural Heritage Fund; the North American Croation Relief, Inc., St. John The Baptist Catholic Church, 708 North 4th Street, Kansas City, Kan. 66101; St. Teresa Childrens` Orphanage, Attn: Don Woolf, 3535 North 63rd Terr., Kansas City, Kan., 66104.

MARY E. BINGAMAN

Mary Ellen Bingaman, 101, Independence, died Sunday, Aug. 2, 1998, at The Groves.

Mrs. Bingaman was born Aug. 1, 1897, in Des Moines, Iowa, and had lived at The Groves for the past 10 years. She was a member of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and held various responsibilities during her years in Des Moines. She did volunteer work for 15 years, including work with the Retired Senior Volunteer Program and Cerebral Palsy.

Her survivors include one son, Ben H. Bingaman Jr., Parker, Colo.; three daughters, Wanda Andersen, Blue Springs, Mary Rae Bayless, Independence, and Carol Mengel, Lee`s Summit; six grandchildren; two step grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and three step great-grandchildren.

Services will be at the church in Des Moines.

DARLOW M. DUGGINS

Darlow Macklin Duggins, 71, Independence, died Monday, Oct. 25, 1999, at Woodbine Health Center in Clay County, Mo.

Mr. Duggins was born Nov. 30, 1927, in Borger, Texas. He served in the U.S. Army and was a veteran of the Korean War. He retired in 1984 with 40 years of service from Sears, Roebuck and Co. He was a former member of Oakley United Methodist Church.

His survivors include his wife, Lois Lee Duggins; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Dana L. Duggins, Independence, and Macklin and Sheryl L. Duggins, and two grandsons, Ryan Matthew Duggins and Tyler Geoffrey Duggins, all of Atlanta, Ga.; two sisters, Norma Shirley Locke and Dorothy Jacquline Hendrix, Kansas City; and several nieces and nephews.

Services will be 10 a.m. Friday at George C. Carson & Sons Independence Chapel. Burial will be in Memorial Park cemetery, Kansas City. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday at the chapel.

MILDRED BENKOVICH

Mildred Benkovich, 78, Independence, died Saturday, Oct. 30, 1999, at the Independence Regional Health Center.

Mrs. Benkovich was born Sept. 18, 1921, in Deepwater, Mo., and had lived most of her life in Independence. She was a payroll clerk and bookkeeper for several companies before her retirement as a secretary with Oscar Lewis Construction. She was a member of the Nativity of Mary Church and its altar society.

Her survivors include her husband of 52 years, John E. Benkovich of the home; a son, John E. Benkovich Jr., Overland Park, Kan.; a daughter and son-in-law, Francine and Leon Davis, Blue Springs; four grandchildren, Breck and Dustin Benkovich, and Aaron and Jeff Davis; and nieces, nephews.

Mass of Christian burial will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Nativity of Mary Catholic Church, Independence. Entombment will be in Mount Olivet Mausoleum. Friends may call from 10 a.m. until service time at the church. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Speaks Suburban Chapel.

M. DEE GOSSETT

Mary Dee Gossett, 61, Blue Springs, died Wednesday, Dec. 1, 1999, at St. Mary's Hospital of Blue Springs.

Mrs. Gossett was born Oct. 2, 1938, in Liberty, Mo. She was a member of the 1956 North Kansas City semi-pro women's basketball team "The Hellcats." She was a homemaker, and head cashier at the Old Country Buffet in Independence for more than 10 years. She was preceded in death by a son, Thomas Joe Gossett in 1973.

Her survivors include her husband, John A. Gossett of the home; two sons, Jack R. Gossett, Dallas, and Douglas Gossett, Geneva, Switzerland; five sisters, Betty Spry and Linda Plummer, both of Polo, Mo., Georgia-Ann "Sis" Lawson and Dorthy Lingle, both of Excelsior Springs, Mo., and Virginia "Jenny" McCombmas, Lawson, Mo.; one brother, Tom Farris, Independence; and five grandchildren, Aaron Tolen, and Jereme, Taylor, Jacklyn and Maya Gossett.

Cremation. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Royer Funeral Home in Grain Valley, where a memorial service will be held at 8 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the American Cancer Society.

KENNETH L. BARRETT

Kenneth Leon Barrett, 80, Independence, died Sunday, Feb. 16, 1997, at Trinity Lutheran Manor Nursing Home in Merriam, Kan.

Mr. Barrett was born in Wynoka, Okla., and had lived in this area since 1945. He was the parts and service director at Galen Boyer Motors in Independence for 36 years. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the South Pacific Theatre. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and a Mason.

His survivors include two sons, Charles Barrett, Detroit, Mich., and Dennis Barrett, Blue Springs; a daughter, Lorianne Rockstrom, Spokane, Wash.; and seven grandchildren, Charles Jr., Angela, Richie, Kenny, Austin, Katie and Greg.

Private memorial services will be at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to Trinity Lutheran Manor.

ROBERT C. FLOYD SR.

Robert Courtland Floyd Sr., 73, Oak Grove, died Wednesday, Feb. 12, 1997.

Mr. Floyd was born Feb. 18, 1923. He was a Marine Corps veteran of World War II. He was a charter member of the Ruskin Heights Presbyterian Church.He was an announcer with KIMO in Independence, where he used the name Bob Courtney, and later with KCKN in Kansas City, Kan., where he served as host of the Courtney`s Corner show. He was a member of the national board of directors of the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists. He served as sales manager of KANS and in 1967, he was appointed general manager of KWKI-FM. He retired as an advertising sales representative with the Blue Springs Examiner in the 1980s. He was preceded in death by a son, Michael.

His survivors include his wife, Eleanor; three sons, Courtland Floyd, Kansas City; Jeff Floyd, Warrensburg, Mo., and Stormy Floyd, Lake Tapawingo; two daughters, Joycellen Fischer, San Jose, Calif., and Joellen Lucas, St. Peters; and 14 grandchildren, Charlotte Thuenemann, Tania Ellis, Tony, Courtland, Spencer and Andrea Lucas, Trevor, Whitney, Brandon and Kelsea, Molly, John and Joseph Fischer and Carter Floyd.

Graveside services were Saturday at Memorial Park cemetery, Kansas City. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the Mike Floyd Aviation Scholarship Fund, Central Missouri State University, Warrensburg, Mo. 64093. Charter Funerals/Blue Ridge Chapel was in charge of arrangements.
