ROBERT F. SMITTLE

Robert F. Smittle, 74, Independence, died Friday, April 24, 1998, at the Medical Center of Independence.

Mr. Smittle was born June 14, 1923, in Crestline, Kan., and had lived in this area for 52 years. He served in the U.S. Army, 149th Combat Engineers, during World War II. On D-Day, June 6, 1944, he and his unit invaded Omaha Beach. He was employed as a machinist at Armco Steel Co. for 39 years, retiring in 1985. He was a member of the United Steel Workers Local Union 13. He was also a member of the American Legion Post 21 and VFW Post 1000. He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church.

His survivors include his wife of 55 years, Helen Louise Smittle of the home; a son and daughter-in-law, Mike and Lonna Smittle, Independence; a daughter and son-in-law, Sandra and Wally McGinnis, Chillicothe, Mo.; a sister, Bonnie Purcell, Asbury, Mo.; and three grandchildren, Cassandra McGinnis, Carrie McGinnis and Jarrod McGinnis.

Graveside services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Leavenworth (Kan.) National cemetery. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 tonight at Speaks Suburban Chapel, Independence. The family suggests contributions to the Barr Hospice, 6501 E. Commerce, Kansas City, Mo. 64120.

LEONA G. COLE

Leona Gentry Cole, 74, Clinton, Mo., died Tuesday, April 28, 1998, at Golden Valley Memorial Hospital, Clinton.

Ms. Cole was born April 23, 1924, in Jackson County, Mo., and had lived in Independence for most of her life until moving to Clinton six years ago. She worked for more than 10 years at Neevels Luggage in Kansas City. She was a member of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. She was preceded in death by a son, George Dorland.

Her survivors include three sons, Tom Clark, Virgil Clark and Lonnie Clark, all of Clinton; four daughters, Helen Farris, Kansas City, Nancy Archaleta, Tampa, Fla., Betty Green, Buckner, and Vicki Uganski, Muskegan, Mich.; a brother, George Cole, Blue Springs; a sister, Juanita Clark, Odessa; and numerous grandchildren.

Memorial services will be 11 a.m. Friday at Northeast Baptist Church, Clinton; cremation. Arrangements are under the direction of Consalus Funeral Home, Clinton.

BARBARA J. RYDER

Barbara J. Ryder, 61, Bates City, died Wednesday, April 22, 1998, at St. Mary`s Hospital of Blue Springs.

Mrs. Ryder was preceded in death by her first husband, Dewey Babcock.

Her survivors include her husband, Robert Ryder of the home; three children, Don McAlister, Bates City, Dan Noe, California, and Shelly Keehler of the home; four stepchildren, Donna Don, Dewey Babcock Jr., and Mary Gordon and Ruth Clark, both of Bates City; and her grandchildren, Ron Kamakeeaind, David Barnhart, Paia Schroeder, Lacey Babcock, Jason Babcock, Brandon McAlister, Aliesha Keehler, Bailey Gordon and Scott Clark Jr.

Her body was donated to Kansas University Medical Center.

SADIE O. SCOTT

Sadie O. Scott, 91, Odessa, died Tuesday, April 28, 1998, at New Haven Nursing Home in Odessa.

Mrs. Scott was borm March 17, 1907, in Buckner and was a lifelong area resident. She was a telephone operator for several years in Buckner and Levasy, and had worked in the primer wing at the Lake City Army Ammunition Plant. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Buckner.

Her survivors include a daughter, Betty Holt, Independence; four grandchildren, John Hedrick, Leavenworth, Kan., Connie Ryland, Odessa, Donna King, Grain Valley, and Carolyn Rowe, Independence; and seven grandchildren, Scott Newland, Cassie Box, Danny Newland, Brandon King, Tiffany King, Darian Rowe and Haley Hedrick.

Services will be 2 p.m. Friday at the Brown Funeral Home, Buckner. Friends may call from 1 to 2 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

HELEN O. STEWART

Helen O. Stewart, 72, Buckner, died Tuesday, April 28, 1998, at St. Mary`s Hospital of Blue Springs.

Mrs. Stewart was born Jan. 26, 1926, in Belgreen, Ala., and was a lifelong area resident. She worked in the laundry department of ECM Hospital until she retired. She was an Air Force veteran and a Protestant.

Her survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Betty and Robert Bales, Buckner; a granddaughter, Jennifer Beauregard; and six great-grandchildren.

Services will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Greenview Memorial Chapel, Florence, Ala. Burial will be in Greenview Memorial Park, Florence. Friends may call from 1 to 2 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home in Florence. Local arrangements are under the direction of Brown Funeral Home in Buckner.

G.L. "SUSIE" BARTER

G.L. "Susie" Barter, 76, Liberty, Mo., died Thursday, July 9, 1998, at the Liberty Terrace Care Center.

Mrs. Barter worked for Southwestern Bell Telephone Co. for 25 years, after which she retired and moved to South Pasadena, Calif. She was preceded in death by her husband, Richard Barter, and a son, Jerry.

Her survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Bonnie and Roger Hamilton, Lone Jack; a sister, Helen Mooney, South Pasadena; one brother, Bud Morris, Oakland, Ark.; three granddaughters, Melinda Hamilton, Sarah Long and Elyse Hamilton; and three great-grandchildren, Skylar Hamilton, Ryker Long and Trevin Long; one nephew; and one niece.

Services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at the George C. Carson & Sons Independence Chapel. Burial will be in Mount Olivet cemetery, Raytown.

PEARL COLLINS

Pearl Collins, 86, Kansas City, died Friday, July 10, 1998, at St. Mary`s Hospital of Blue Springs.

Mrs. Collins was born June 9, 1912, in Meta, Mo., and had been an area resident for more than 50 years, living north of the river for 22 years. She lived in Stockton, Mo., before returning to this area in 1988. She was vice president of the Randy Collins Gasoline Co., and was a member of the Park Hill Baptist Church, Parkville, Mo. She was preceded in death by her husband, Randolph H. Collins in March 1998, and a daughter, Cheryl Ann Collins in 1992.

Her survivors include two sons and one daughter-in-law, Randy Collins, Austin, Texas, and Patrick H. Collins, D.D.S., and his wife, Brenda, of Blue Springs; one brother, Alfred Woody, Kansas City; and two grandchildren, Jessica Collins and Courtney Collins of Blue Springs.

Services were today at the church; cremation. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the church. Arrangements were under the direction of the Heritage Funeral Home, Parkville.

MARY L. HUGHES

Mary L. Hughes, 70, Independence, died Saturday, July 11, 1998.

Mrs. Hughes was born May 23, 1928, in Orrick, Mo.

Her survivors include two daughters, five brothers, two sisters, two granddaughters, two great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

Memorial graveside services will be 5 p.m. Saturday at South Point cemetery, Orrick. Arrangements are under the direction of the Sheil Colonial Funeral Home, Raytown.

JAMES A. "JIM"

KIEFFER

James A. "Jim" Kieffer, 78, Sugar Creek, died Sunday, July 12, 1998, at the Independence Regional Health Center.

Mr. Kieffer was born Oct. 13, 1919, in Majestic, Iowa, and had lived in Sugar Creek most of his life. He was retired from the Sunshine Biscuit Co. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Independence, and was an Army veteran of World War II, having received the Purple Heart.

His survivors include one son, Jim Kieffer, Independence; one daughter, Anna Eriksen, Sugar Creek; two brothers, Peter Kieffer, Florida, and George Bunson, Michigan; one sister, Alice Romano, Holt, Mo.; six grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

Services will be 1 p.m. Wednesday at the George C. Carson & Sons Independence Chapel. Burial will be in Mount Washington cemetery.

WENDELL B. KIRK

Wendell Bland Kirk, 70, Oak Grove, formerly of Independence, died Monday, July 13, 1998, at the New Haven Nursing Home, Odessa.

Mr. Kirk was born Aug. 29, 1927, in Urbana, Mo., and lived in Independence, Odessa, Oak Grove and Macks Creek, Mo., before returning to Independence in 1987. He moved to Oak Grove in 1992. He was a repairman at the end of the assembly line and an inspector for the Ford Motor Corp., Claycomo, for 30 years, retiring in 1980, and was a member of United Auto Workers Union Local 249 in Kansas City. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Bates City, and was a Navy veteran, serving in Manila and the Philippines. He served aboard the Norva, Winooski and the Great Lakes Station and received the Asiatic-Pacific Ribbon and the Victory Medal.

His survivors include his wife, Raye Dein Eidson Kirk of the home; one son and daughter-in-law, Tim and Julia Kirk, Blue Springs; three daughters and sons-in-law, Christina and Robert Folsom, Sebring, Fla., Carol and Terry Peerson, Odessa, and Warna and Lee Barker, Columbia, Mo.; four brothers, Bill Kirk, Odessa, Rody Kirk, Macon, Mo., Gale Kirk, Chilhowee, Mo., and Fount Junior Kirk, Phoenix, Ariz.; two sisters, Mary Keller, Bates City, and Irene Helphrey, Odessa; 10 grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.

Services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at the First Baptist Church of Bates City. Burial will be 3 p.m. Wednesday in Mission Ridge cemetery, south of Urbana. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 tonight at the Ralph O. Jones Funeral Home, Odessa.

OPAL M. LOVE

Opal Marie Williams Love, 78, Independence, died Sunday, July 12, 1998, at the Independence Regional Health Center.

Mrs. Love was born April 16, 1920, in Waldo, Ark., and had lived in this area most of her life. She worked for the Sears, Roebuck & Co. for 13 years, retiring in 1982, and was formerly a member of the Sears employees Mother`s Club. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star and was a Baptist. She was preceded in death by one son, George.

Her survivors include one son, Joe Love, and one daughter, Diana Striley, both of Independence; one sister, Mattie Lee Miller, Gravois Mills, Mo.; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Graveside services were today at Mount Washington cemetery. Arrangements were under the direction of the Speaks Suburban Chapel.

HAZEL K. MATHIS

Hazel K. Mathis, 79, Kansas City, Kan., died Thursday, July 9, 1998, at Providence Medical Center.

Mrs. Mathis was born June 20, 1919, in El Dorado, Kan. She was a nurse`s aide, and was a member of the First Southern Baptist Church of Kansas City, Kan.

Her survivors include three sons, Charles R. Mathis and Patrick B. Mathis, both of Flemington, Mo., and Michael S. Mathis, Overland Park, Kan.; one daughter, Peggy E. Hodges, Sugar Creek; one sister, Marjorie E. Reeves, Kansas City, Kan.; and six grandchildren, Tamara J. Hodges, Jennifer R. Mathis, Jennifer Hatfield, Phillip C. Hodges, Jonathan H. Mathis and Lauren E. Mathis.

Services were Monday at D.W. Newcomer`s Sons Longview Chapel. Burial was in Longview Memorial Gardens. The family suggests contributions to the church.

ARNOLD R. MULLINS

Arnold Rufus Mullins, 53, Kansas City, died Thursday, July 9, 1998, in Camden, Mo.

Mr. Mullins was born Oct. 15, 1944, in Manhattan, Kan., and moved to this area from Arkansas. He was a truck driver for the Kryger Glass Co. He served in both the Army and Navy during the Vietnam War. He was a member of the Northern Cherokee Nation of the Old Louisiana Territory, and will be mentioned in the forthcoming history book of this membership. He was a member of the Mustang CB Club.

His survivors include his mother, Vernia Gale of the home; one son, James Arnold Mullins, and one daughter, Christine Mullins, both of Kalamazoo, Mich.; two sisters, Catherine Jeannette Rissinger and Joyce Diane O`Neal, both of Kansas City; one grandchild; and several nieces and nephews.

Services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Brown Funeral Home, Buckner. Burial will be in Buckner Hill cemetery, where military honors will be held. Friends may call from 10 to 11 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Contributions are suggested to Vernia Gale, in care of Brown Funeral Home, 300 Adams, Buckner, Mo. 64016-0168.

BEN R. MYERS

Ben Ray Myers, 69, Windsor, Mo., died Saturday, July 4, 1998, at his home.

Mr. Myers was born Oct. 18, 1928, in Arma, Kan. He was a member of the International Order of Odd Fellows 187, Windsor, and Elks Lodge 125 and American Legion Post 642, both in Sedalia, Mo.

His survivors include four sons, Thomas James Myers, Independence, Brian Ray Myers, Kansas City, Joseph William Myers, Ogden, Utah, and Robert Dean Myers, Olathe, Kan.; two daughters, Kathleen Langham, Olathe, and Elizabeth Darlene Sward, Kansas City; one brother, Charles R. Myers, Costa Rica; and 15 grandchildren.

Graveside services will be 7 p.m. Friday at Laurel Oak cemetery, Windsor, with the IOOF 187 officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of the Hadley Funeral Home, Windsor.

BESSIE M. RINER

Bessie Mae Riner, 74, Lexington, Mo., formerly of Buckner, died Monday, July 13, 1998, at the Lafayette Regional Health Center, Lexington.

Mrs. Riner was born Oct. 27, 1923, in Medford, Mo., and lived in Buckner before moving to Lexington in 1995. She was a homemaker all of her life, and had been a cook at the Lake City Army Ammunition Plant for a short time.

Her survivors include four sons, Floyd J. Riner and Raymond L. Riner, both of Buckner, Charles E. Riner, Grain Valley, and Brian K. Riner, Lee`s Summit; three daughters, Donna M. Roach, Lee`s Summit, Bonnie F. Brady, Wellington, Mo., and Yvonna M. Stapleton, Buckner; three brothers, Lewis Warren, Medford, Kelly Warren, Warrensburg, Mo., and Larry Warren, Holden, Mo.; three sisters, Martha Everett, Gunn City, Mo., Shirley Wiseman, Centerview, Mo., and Edith Ehlers, Concordia, Mo.; 21 grandchildren; two step grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and three step great-grandchildren.

Services will be 10 a.m. Thursday at the Snow Funeral Home, Wellington. Burial will be in Buckner Hill cemetery. Friends may call from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. The family suggests contributions to the American Diabetes Association.
