HOWARD C. BLUE

Howard Chandler Blue, 90, Kansas City, died Sunday, March 21, 1999, at his home.

Mr. Blue was born in 1908 in Enid, Okla., grew up in Moline, Ill., and moved to Kansas City in 1935. He received a bachelor's degree in architectural engineering from the University of Illinois in1934, where he was a member of Delta Tau Delta. In 1935, he went to work with his uncle, William Spencer, to help run the Kansas City Quarries Co., and later founded the Kansas City Concrete Co. and the Concrete Casting Co. He was a member of the Engineer's Club, Rotary Club, Equity Investors, Carriage Club, and the Monterey Peninsula Golf and Country Club, Pebble Beach, Calif. His wife of 55 years, Mary Ellen Gabel Blue, died Aug. 1, 1996.

His survivors include two daughters and one son-in-law, Susan and Richard A. Olness, San Francisco, and Sally Ann Blue, Newport Beach, Calif.; and two grandsons, Christopher Chandler Olness and Charles Drew Olness.

Memorial services will be 3 p.m. Wednesday at D.W. Newcomer's Sons Stine & McClure Chapel. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to your favorite charity.

CHERI LAYMAN

Cheri Layman, 28, Pittsburg, Kan., died Sunday, Aug. 2, 1998, at the Girard District Hospital.

Her survivors include two children, Gregory and Toni Layman of the home; her mother, Barbara Duran, three brothers, Edward, Kelly and Jackie Swor Jr., and one sister, Katie Swor, all of Pittsburg; and many nieces and nephews.

Services will be 2 p.m. Thursday at the Bath-Naylor Funeral Home, Pittsburg. Burial will be at Mount Olive cemetery, Pittsburg. Friends may call from 7 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

ROBERT H. HAMILTON

Robert H. Hamilton, 76, Blue Springs, died Wednesday, Oct. 14, 1998, at Research Medical Center in Kansas City, Mo.

Mr. Hamilton was born Oct. 14, 1922, in Greenwood, Mo. He worked as an inspector and also served in the U.S. Army in World War II. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge No. 480 in Pleasant Hill, Mo., and of the American Legion.

His survivors include his wife, Ann Hamilton; his mother, Marie Hamilton; two daughters, Karen L. Hamilton and Mary Ann Weber; two sons, Richard B. Hamilton and Robert E. Hamilton; three sisters, Anna M. Greene, Eileen Griffith, and Nadine Jones; three grandchildren, Shauna, Richard and Jennifer; and one great-grandchild, Taylor.

Services will be 2 p.m. Monday at the Strasburg cemetery. Memorial contributions should be made to the Masonic Home of Missouri, 12101 E. Bannister Road, 64138.

WILLIAM W. BENNETT

William W. Bennett, 54, Grain Valley, died Tuesday, Oct. 20, 1998, at the Medical Center of Independence.

Mr. Bennett was born Sept. 24, 1944, in Golden City, Mo., and lived in Raytown and Blue Springs before moving to Grain Valley four years ago. He had worked for the General Motors Fairfax Assembly Plant for 34 years, and was central engineering business manager. He was an honorary Warrior in the Tribe of Mic-O-Say.

His survivors include his wife, Shirley Bennett of the home; three sons and one daughter-in-law, Scott Bennett, St. Louis, Robert Bennett, Kansas City, and Dave and Michelle Bennett, Dallas; his mother, Lorene Bennett, Lee's Summit; and two grandchildren, Sydney and Ryan Bennett.

Services will be 10 a.m. Friday at the Royer Funeral Home, Grain Valley; cremation. Friends may call from 6 to 8:30 tonight at the funeral home. The family suggests contributions to the American Cancer Society.

HARRY R. "PORKY" BARROW

Harry R. "Porky" Barrow, 82, Independence, died Saturday, Oct. 30, 1999, at Maywood Terrace Living Center.

Mr. Barrow as born Sept. 19, 1917, in Kansas City, and had lived in Independence for more than 30 years. He was a machinist for Amoco Oil Co., Sugar Creek. He was a member of Masonic Lodge 76 in Independence.

His survivors include his wife, Georgia A. Barrow, Independence; two sons, Charles R. Barrow, Sunrise Beach, Mo., and Douglas E. Barrow, Kansas City, Kan.; a brother, Albert Barrow, Blue Springs, and Arnette Anderson, Boling Brook, Ill.; three grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Services will be 1 p.m. Tuesday at D.W. Newcomers Noland Road Chapel. Burial will be in Floral Hills Memorial Garden. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 tonight at the chapel, where Masonic services will be at 8 p.m. The family suggests contributions to the American Heart Association or to cancer associations.

MARION F. YOCUM

Marion F. Yocum, 80, Independence, died Monday, Nov. 2, 1998.

Mr. Yocum was born June 10, 1918, in Springfield, Mo., and had lived in Independence since 1955. He was a member of Teamsters Local 41, and a Navy veteran of World War II.

His survivors include his wife, Dolores E. Yocum of the home; a daughter, Doris Eagan, Lone Jack; three sons, David Yocum, Pleasant Hill, Mo., Dennis Yocum, Lake Lotawana, and Donald Yocum, Independence; a brother, Alfred E. Yocum, Tulsa, Okla.; eight grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Cremation. Arrangements are under the direction of the George C. Carson & Sons Independence Chapel.

EDWIN J. ADER

Edwin Jack Ader, 53, Sugar Creek, died Friday, Nov. 13, 1998.

Mr. Ader was born Nov. 24, 1944, in Independence, and was a lifelong area resident. He was with the Missouri Highway Patrol from 1968 to 1971, the Kansas City Police Department from 1971 to 1985, and was a funeral director for Carson Funeral Homes for several years. He was a member of St. Ann's Catholic Church and Knights of Columbus Council 3430, and an Eagle Scout Hardway Warrior and a member of the Tribe of Mic-O-Say.

His survivors include two daughters, Lori Engle, Sugar Creek, and Jackie Cue, Independence; his wife of 34 years, Peggy Ader of the home; his mother, Belle Ader, Sugar Creek; two sisters, Helen Sumner, Independence, and Stella Rowland, California; and five grandchildren, Jessica, Rachel and Jimmy Engle, and David and Ryan Jack Cue.

Mass of Christian burial will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at the church. Burial will be in Mount Washington cemetery. Friends may call from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday at the George C. Carson & Sons Independence Chapel, where a prayer service will be held at 7:30 p.m.

ELMER A. "CASEY" HUFFMAN

Elmer A. "Casey" Huffman, 87, Independence, died Tuesday, Dec. 1, 1998, at the Independence Manor Care Center.

Mr. Huffman was born Aug. 11, 1911, in Jordon, Mo., and had lived in this area most of his life. He was a machinist for Standard Oil in Sugar Creek for 43 years, retiring in 1970, and was active in the Union. He had also served on the Independence City Council. He was a 32nd Degree Mason and member of the Episcopalian Church. His wife of 62 years, E. Louise Huffman, died in 1997.

His survivors include one son, Gary Huffman, Independence; two sisters, Gladys Powell, Liberty, Mo., and Grace Callahan, Independence; one brother, Howard Huffman, Independence; two grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Friday at the Speaks Suburban Chapel; cremation will follow.

FRANCES R. COUNTRYMAN

Frances Rae Countryman, 64, Eldon, Mo., died Saturday, Feb. 13, 1999, at her home.

Mrs. Countryman was born June 2, 1934, in Ekalaka, Mont. She had lived in Savannah, Ill., and Buckner before moving to Eldon 14 years ago. She had been employed as a nurse's aide at Oak Grove Health Care Center in the 1980s, and the Good Shepherd Nursing Home, Concordia, Mo., in the early 1990s. She was a Catholic. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jess Countryman, in 1989 and a son-in-law, Bud Carroll, in 1998.

Her survivors include a son, Joe Wlaschin, Albany, N.Y.; three daughters, Brenda Carroll, of Eldon, Sharon Hartman, Subula, Iowa; and Christine McCombie, Lanark, Ill.; two sisters, Harriette Simmons, Macon, Miss.; and Phyllis Hayden, Camdenton, Mo.; 12 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Royer Funeral home, Oak Grove. Burial will be in Oak Grove cemetery. Friends may call from 10 a.m. until service time at the chapel.

LOUIS H. MENZIES

Louis Hubert Menzies, 82, Morrowville, Kan., died Tuesday, March 16, 1999, at the Mount Joseph Senior Community, Concordia, Kan.

Mr. Menzies was born Feb. 18, 1917, in Morrowville, Kan., and graduated from Morrowville Rural High School. He was a farmer and for 30 years worked at and managed the Continental Grain Co. in Morrowville, retiring in 1979. He also served on the school board, City Council and served as mayor for several years. He was a member of the Morrowville Christian Church. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Lois Anna Bahl Menzies on Oct. 3, 1979, a son, Hubert Eugene Menzies; a great-granddaughter, and two stepchildren, Lonnie Koch and Gaynell Schoenrock.

His survivors include his wife, Bessie Menzies, Concordia; two sons and daughters-in-law, Larry and Karen Menzies, Great Bend, Kan., and Kermit and Joyce Menzies, Hutchison, Kan.; three daughters and sons-in-law, Roberta and Jim Hauschel, Independence, Rebecca and Marvin Nance, Emporia, Kan., and Ramona and Mike Derousseau, Concordia; a daughter-in-law, Mari Menzies, Salina, Kan.; one brother, Kermit Menzies, Concordia; two sisters, Marge Lindsey, Omaha, Neb., and Mildred Enfield, Kansas City, Kan.; 19 grandchildren; three step grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and nine step great-grandchildren.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Morrowville Christian Church. Burial will be in Morrowville cemetery. Friends may call after 2 p.m. Friday at the Chaput-Buoy Funeral Chapel, Concordia, Kan. The family suggests contributions to the Morrowville Christian Church.

GERALDINE M. HEARN

Geraldine Montgomery Hearn, 84, Independence, died Thursday, Sept. 17, 1998, at the Independence Regional Health Center.

Mrs. Hearn was born July 22, 1914, in Chariton, Iowa, and she retired in Independence. She was an elder in the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and was a volunteer chaplain for the Independence Regional Health Center. She was a medical secretary and registrar for the School of Nursing in Wilson, N.C., prior to her retirement. She was preceded in death by her husband of 42 years, Harry Hearn in 1977.

Her survivors include two daughters, Sherri Hearn Lott, Statesville, N.C., and Kathleen Hearn Cornish, Independence; a brother, Richard Montgomery, DesMoines, Iowa; a sister, Maxine M. Stamos, DesMoines; and two grandchildren, Paul Hearn Cornish and Jennifer Lott Brittian.

Memorial services will be 1 p.m. Saturday at New Salem Funeral Home, Independence. Burial will be in Chariton (Iowa) cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or to the RLDS Oblation Fund.

EARL J. SIMMONS

Earl James Simmons, 83, Independence, died Tuesday, Dec. 1, 1998.

Mr. Simmons was born April 6, 1915, in Lexington, Mo. He retired from Armco Steel where he worked for more than 40 years. He was a member of the AFL/CIO Local 13. He was a member of the Masonic McDonald Lodge 324. He was also a member of the Susquehanna Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his wife, Eleda B. Simmons in 1992, and a daughter, Loretta A. Scritchfield in 1966.

His survivors include his grandson, Mark Scritchfield, Independence; a granddaughter, Belinda Stewart, Lehigh Acres, Fla.; a sister, Bertie Braun, Lexington; and great-grandchildren, Austin and Colton Scritchfield, Chris, David and Michelle Stewart.

Services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at George C. Carson & Sons Independence Chapel. Burial will be in Floral Hills cemetery. Friends may call after 6:30 p.m. Friday at the chapel, where the Masonic service will be at 7:30 p.m.

CHARLES NORMAN JACKSON

Charles Norman Jackson, 61, Grain Valley, died Thursday, Feb. 4, 1999, at his home.

Mr. Jackson was born Aug. 16, 1937, in Benton County, Mo. He worked for 40 years as a salesman for Sears, Roebuck, and Co., first working at the Plaza Location in Kansas City before moving to Independence Center, and retiring from the Front Street Sears Store in October 1956. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Grain Valley. He served in the Navy from June 13 to Aug. 22 in 1956.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Ortho and Anna Jackson; a brother, Otho Jackson Jr.; a sister, Maxine Rank; and his first wife, Neoma F. Jackson, in 1985.

Survivors include his second wife, Carolyn Jackson, of the home; three sons, Stephen Jackson, Olathe, Kan., Bryan Jackson, Raytown, and Brent Jackson, Lee's Summit; one stepson, Wayne Bottemuller, Kansas City; one stepdaughter, Tracey Middleton, Independence; four grandchildren; four step grandchildren; one brother, Harold Jackson, Lincoln, Mo.; two sisters, Louese Bistline, Lincoln, Mo., and Doris Yack, Fairbury, Ill., several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be 2:30 p.m. Sunday at the Davis-Miller Funeral Home, Lincoln, Mo. Burial will in Mount Pleasant cemetery, Lincoln, Mo. Friends may call from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. The family suggests memorials to the Benton County Hospice or the American Cancer Society.

RUBY FLEMING

Ruby Fleming, 85, Independence, died Saturday, Nov. 21, 1998, at the Rosewood Health Center.

Mrs. Fleming was born July 18, 1913, in Kansas City, and had lived in this area for many years. She was a member of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, and attended the East Alton congregation. She was also a volunteer at Independence Regional Health Center.

Her survivors include her husband of 49 years, James Fleming of the home; a daughter, Judith Lakey, Independence; six grandchildren, Michael Johnson, Jackie Arnott, Jason Johnson, Jeremy Lakey, Melissa Johnson and Matt Johnson; and five great-grandchildren.

Memorial services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Speaks Suburban Chapel. Inurnment will be at Leavenworth National cemetery at a later date. Friends may call from 9 to 10 a.m. Tuesday at the chapel.

CLARENCE R. AUXIER SR.

Clarence Raymond Auxier Sr., 89, Independence, died Wednesday, Nov. 26, 1997, at Research Hospital, Kansas City.

Mr. Auxier was born April 18, 1908, in Elk City, Okla., and moved to Independence in 1970. He was a draftsman for oil companies in Tulsa, Okla., until retiring in 1970. Since his retirement he has been employed at the RLDS Auditorium.

His survivors include his wife, Maxine Auxier of the home; a son, C.R. Auxier Jr., Branson, Mo.; a daughter, Marianne Trammell, Skiatook, Okla.; six grandchildren, Jacque Mitchell, Perry Auxier, Wendy Fortenberry, Richard Trammell, Ronnie Trammell and Brandi Sims; eight great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the RLDS Stone Church, 1012 Lexington Ave.
