EDITH M. CLEMENS

Edith M. Clemens, 89, Independence, died Monday, March 8, 1999, at the Independence Manor Care Center.

Mrs. Clemens has been a resident of Jackson County most of her life. She was a member of New Salem Baptist Church and the Elm Grove Extension Club in Jackson County.

Her survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Mary Serene and Gene Jeffries and Ann and Dude Johnson, and one sister, Mary Sennett, all of Independence; three grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Graveside services will be 10 a.m. Friday at Salem cemetery. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday at the New Salem Funeral Home.

STEPHEN LEE DONOVAN

Stephen Lee Donovan, 42, Independence, died Wednesday, March 10, 1999, at his home.

He was born Sept. 23, 1956 in Independence and lived here his entire life. He was a maintenance worker for United Floor Care for the past four years. He was a member of the New Hope Baptist Church. He served in the U.S. Marines. Survivors include his mother, Myrtle Pauline Donovan, of the home; one brother, William E. Donovan, Independence; three sisters, Judy K. Hollman, Emma Ruth McGinnis, and Becky Ann Wallander, all of Independence; and several nieces and nephews. Graveside services are 2:30 p.m. Monday at Leavenworth National cemetery, Leavenworth, Kan. Friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at Speaks Suburban Chapel. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.

ELBERTA BROCKMAN

Elberta Brockman, 79, Independence, died Wednesday, March 17, 1999, at the Independence Regional Health Center.

Mrs. Brockman was born in Independence. She was a homemaker and had previously worked in sales.

Her survivors include her husband, John W. Brockman Sr., Independence; four sons, John W. Brockman Jr., Independence, Sam Brockman, Phillipsburg, N.J., Dan Brockman, Valley Center, Calif., and Paul Brockman, Sibley; two daughters, Dorothy Brockman and Fern Kern, and one brother, Jess Queen Sr., all of Independence; 17 grandchildren; and 33 great-grandchildren.

Services will be 9 a.m. Saturday at D.W. Newcomer's Sons Floral Hills Chapel, Kansas City. Burial will be in Floral Hills Memorial Gardens, Kansas City. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the chapel.

MARY L. CARSON

Mary L. Carson, 83, Blue Springs, died Friday, April 10, 1998, at the Rosewood Health Center.

Mrs. Carson was born near Wheaton, Mo., and had lived in Kansas City before moving to Blue Springs 27 years ago. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Blue Springs. For the last two years she attended the daily Senior Citizen Luncheon at Vesper Hall in Blue Springs.

Her survivors include a son, Gary Carson, and a granddaughter, Debbie Carson, both of Independence; and a niece, Lois Hough, Joseph, Ore.

Services will be 2 p.m. Thursday at the Speaks Suburban Chapel; cremation. The family suggests contributions to the Salvation Army.

HAROLD E. NOEL SR.

Harold E. Noel Sr., 80, Independence, died Sunday, April 12, 1998, at the Veteran`s Administration Hospital, Kansas City.

Mr. Noel was born Oct. 29, 1917, in Kansas City, and was a lifelong resident of Independence. He was chief operator for more than 30 years with Standard Oil. He was a member of VFW Post 1000 and Eagles 3976, both of Independence. He was an Army veteran of World War II. He was preceded in death by his wife, Billie Deoma Noel in 1976, and a daughter, Dorothy Cocayne in 1996.

His survivors include a son, Harold E. Noel Jr., Lorena, Texas; four daughters, Carolyn Hardin, Dripping Springs, Texas, Shirley Noel, state of Texas, Margie McCartney, Kansas City, and Karla Smith, Hartford, Ala.; 21 grandchildren; and 22 great-grandchildren.

Services will be 8 p.m. Tuesday at the George C. Carson & Sons Independence Chapel. Graveside services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Eastslope Memorial Gardens cemetery, Kansas City. Friends may call from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. today at the chapel.

SHIRLEY J. PRICE-HURLEY

Shirley J. Price-Hurley, 62, Independence, died Sunday, April 12, 1998, at her home.

Mrs. Price-Hurley was born Aug. 12, 1935, in Kansas City. She was a homemaker and was of the Baptist faith. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Lester W. Hurley in 1975 and her second husband, Kenny Price in 1997.

Her survivors include five sons, Rich Hurley, Ron Hurley, Bob Hurley, all of Independence, and Don Hurley, Nashville, Tenn.; two brothers, Harold Langford, Independence, and Donald Langford, Houston, Texas; four sisters, Pat Brewer, Lake of the Ozarks, Bonnie Peters and Betty Caponetto, both of Independence, and Ilene Eddington, Springfield, Mo.; 10 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Services will be 7 p.m. Wednesday at the George C. Carson & Sons Independence Chapel; cremation. Burial will be in Mount Washington cemetery at a later date. Friends may call from 6 p.m. until service time at the chapel.

WAYNE C. CHERRY

Wayne Curtis Cherry, 38, Independence, died Friday, April 24, 1998, in Pierce City, Mo.

Mr. Cherry was born March 5, 1960, in Wahiawa, Hawaii, and had lived in Independence for the past 30 years. He was a CNC operator at Best Tool for 15 years. He was a member of Eastgate Christian Church.

His survivors include his wife, Annetta Cherry, and two sons, Ryan Curtis Cherry and Kyle Ray Cherry, all of the home; his parents, Fred and Grace Cherry, Independence; a brother, Donald L. Cherry, Union, Mo.; and a sister, Linda S. Cherry Goff, Metuchen, N.J.

Services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at D.W. Newcomer`s Sons Noland Road Chapel. Burial will be in Mount Washington cemetery. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 Tuesday at the chapel. Contributions are suggested to the family to help defray funeral expenses.

VELMA L. CRUMBAUGH

Velma L. Crumbaugh, 87, Raymore, Mo., formerly of Independence, died Sunday, April 26, 1998, at the Raymore Health Care Center.

Mrs. Crumbaugh was born in Clara, Mo., and had lived in Independence since 1958. She was a secretary at the Stuart Hall Co. for 24 years before she retired. She was a member of the Birchwood Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Roy McElroy in 1943, and her second husband, Edward G. Crumbaugh on Sept. 7, 1995.

Her survivors include several nieces and nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews; and great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews.

Services will be 1 p.m. Tuesday at D.W. Newcomer`s Sons Floral Hills Chapel, Kansas City. Burial will be in Floral Hills Memorial Gardens, Kansas City. Friends may call from 5 to 7 tonight at the chapel.

JULIA D. DeWITT-BAXTER

Julia D. DeWitt-Baxter, 28, Kansas City, died Sunday, April 26, 1998, at Liberty (Mo.) Hospital.

Mrs. DeWitt-Baxter was born Aug. 6, 1969, in Kansas City and was a lifelong area resident. She was a member of the Pleasant View Christian Church in Independence.

Her survivors include her grandparents, Charles and Margaret Wood, Buckner; her mother, Mary Lou Levy, Venice, Fla.; a son, Gene Anthony Baxter Jr., Independence; two brothers, Richard DeWitt, Overland Park, Kan., and Sherman DeWitt Jr., Fincastle, Va.; and a sister, Deborah Richey, Joliet, Ill.

Services were today at the church. Cremation, with private inurnment, will be at Buckner Hill cemetery. The family suggests contributions to Hope House in care of Pleasant View Christian Church, 19114 E. Salisbury Road, Independence, Mo. 64056. Arrangements are under the direction of Brown Funeral Home, Buckner.

JOHN J. FOGLIANI

John J. Fogliani, 92, Independence, died Sunday, April 26, 1998, at the Independence Health Care Center.

Mr. Fogliani was born Dec. 28, 1905, in Butte, Mont., and had lived in Independence for 63 years. He was a stockman for Sears & Roebuck for 28 years, retiring in 1971. He was a member of Nativity of Mary Catholic Church. His wife of 64 years, Lucy Fogliani, died in July 1997.

His survivors include a son, Harry J. Fogliani, and a daughter, Deanna M. Fogliani, both of Independence; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Services will be 1 p.m. Wednesday at D.W. Newcomer`s Sons Noland Road Chapel. Entombment will be at Mount Olivet cemetery, Raytown. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday at the chapel.

JESSE F. PIKER

Jesse F. Piker, 68, Gravois Mills, Mo., formerly of Independence, died Friday, April 24, 1998, at Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis.

Mr. Piker was born Feb. 11, 1930, in Russell, Ark., moved to Kansas City in 1950, and lived in Independence before moving to Gravois Mills in 1978. He owned and operated Eldon Tire and Wheel in Eldon, Mo., and attended the Opened Door Christian Fellowship in Laurie, Mo. He sponsored youth baseball teams in Independence for approximately 16 years, and one team made it to the National Finals in Tennessee.

His survivors include his wife, Edwina Proctor Piker of the home; two sons, the Rev. Jerry Piker, Laurie, and Norman Piker, Independence; a daughter, Pam Epps, Independence; five brothers, Frank Piker, Grain Valley, J.C. Piker, Monroe, La., Billy Piker, Oak Grove, Wayne Piker, Searcy, Ark., and Joseph Piker, Bradley, Ill.; three sisters, Lavern Needham, Laurie, Virginia Frame, St. Louis, and Bertha Walton, Festus, Mo.; seven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Services will be 7 p.m. Tuesday at the church. Graveside services and burial will be 1 p.m. Wednesday at Floral Hills cemetery, Kansas City. Friends may call from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at the church. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the building fund at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of the Kidwell-Garber Funeral Home, Laurie.

ROBERT F. SMITTLE

Robert F. Smittle, 74, Independence, died Friday, April 24, 1998, at the Medical Center of Independence.

Mr. Smittle was born June 14, 1923, in Crestline, Kan., and had lived in this area for 52 years. He was a machinist at the Armco Steel Co. for 39 years, retiring in 1985, and was a member of United Steel Workers Local Union 13. He served in the U.S. Army with the 149th Combat Engineers during World War II. On D-Day, June 6, 1944, he and his unit invaded Omaha Beach. He was a member of American Legion Post 21, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1000 and Calvary Baptist Church.

His survivors include his wife of 55 years, Helen Louise Purcell Smittle of the home; a son and daughter-in-law, Mike and Lonna Smittle, Independence; a daughter and son-in-law, Sandra and Wally McGinnis, Chillicothe, Mo.; a sister, Bonnie Purcell, Asbury, Mo.; three grandchildren, Cassandra McGinnis, Carrie McGinnis and Jarrod McGinnis; and many nieces and nephews.

Graveside services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Leavenworth National cemetery. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 tonight at the Speaks Suburban Chapel. The family suggests contributions to the Barr Hospice, 6501 E. Commerce, Kansas City, Mo. 64120.

SAMANTHA LARK

Samantha Lark, 9-year-old daughter of Mark and Elizabeth Lark of Buckner, died Saturday, Aug. 1, 1998, at Children`s Mercy Hospital.

Samantha was born Feb. 13, 1989, in Kansas City. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Buckner, and was a student at Buckner Elementary School.

Her survivors also include many relatives and friends.

Services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at the church. Burial will be in Buckner Hill cemetery. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Webb-Freer Funeral Home, Blue Springs. The family suggests contributions to the Children`s Mercy Pediatric Intensive Care Unit.

GEORGE W. RICHARDSON

George Wagner Richardson, 90, Bates City, died Friday, Aug. 13, 1999 in Crescent Health Care, Oak Grove.

Mr. Richardson was born Sept. 20, 1908, in Bates City. He moved with his family to Oak Grove in 1910, and graduated in 1927 from Oak Grove High School. He and his brother William Richardson worked the family farm in Bates City until his retirement in 1991. He never married .

He is survived by his two brothers William Ray Richardson of Bristol Manor, Odessa, Mo.; and Elmer Dale Richardson, currently residing the farm in Bates City; two nieces and two nephews.

Graveside services will be at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, in the Oak Grove cemetery.

All arrangements are under the direction of the Royer Funeral Home, Oak Grove.

THOMAS F. PEARSON SR.

Thomas Frederick Pearson Sr., 91, Lee's Summit, died Thursday, Nov. 5, 1998, at Lee's Summit Hospital.

Mr. Pearson was born April 11, 1907, in Herington, Kan., and had lived in Florida before moving to this area in May of this year. He worked in the Office of Education at Forbes Air Force Base, Topeka, retiring in 1972. He was a Mason and of the Unitarian Faith. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Gertrude Gwinner Pearson, in 1950.

His survivors include his wife, Susan Pearson of the home; a son, Tom F. Pearson Jr., and his wife, Janice, Buckner; a daughter, Daisy R. Patton, Shawnee, Kan.; eight grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.

Memorial graveside services will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Lawrence (Kan.) Memorial Park cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to your favorite charity in memory of Mr. Pearson.
