VIRGINIA L. JONES

Virginia L. Jones, 73, Independence, died Thursday, March 13, 1997, at Columbia Independence Regional Health Center.

Mrs. Jones was born Jan. 20, 1924, in Chula, Mo. She was an elementary school principal for Hickman Mills School for 25 years. She was a 1941 graduate of William Chrisman High School. She received her undergraduate degree from Park College in Parkville, Mo., in 1945, her master`s degree from Central Missouri State University in Warrensburg in 1969, and her specialist degree from CMSU in 1975. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Independence.

Her survivors include her husband, William Jones, of the home; one son, Dr. Scott Jones, Kansas City; one daughter, Alexa Thompson, Kansas City; two sisters, Elaine Watt, Indianapolis, and Parkie Copeland, Green Valley, Ariz.; and four grandchildren.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the First Presbyterian Church of Independence. Burial will be in Mount Washington cemetery. Friends may call from 7 to 8 p.m. at Newcomer`s Noland Road Chapel.

The family suggests contributions to the Virginia L. Jones Early Childhood Development Endowment Fund.

WALTER G. WELDON

Walter G. Weldon, 90, Independence, died Wednesday, Nov. 19, 1997, at the Rosewood Health Center. Mr. Weldon was born Feb. 10, 1907, in Lafayette, Calif., and lived in Iowa and South Dakota before moving to Independence 21 years ago. He was a beekeeper for 49 years, retiring in 1974. He had been vice president of the Board of Directors of the Sue Bee Honey Association in Sioux City, Iowa. He had been president and vice president of his Neighborhood Council, and had been a teacher, priest, elder, high priest and an evangelist patriarch in the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. He was a member of the Waldo Restoration Branch.

His survivors include his wife of 65 years, Jeanette E. Weldon of Independence; a son, Lloyd A. Weldon, Eudora, Kan.; a daughter, Marjorie J. Hahn, Kansas City; a brother, Chester Weldon, New Port Richey, Fla.; five grandchildren, Debra White, Kathryn Hahn, Kevin Weldon, Kimberly Weldon and Randel Weldon;and five great-grandchildren.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Speaks Suburban Chapel. Entombment will be in Mound Grove cemetery. Friends may call from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the chapel. The family suggests contributions to the Center Place Restoration School.

ALBERTA BROOKS

Alberta Brooks, 89, Independence, died Thursday, Sept. 25, 1997, at Columbia Independence Regional Health Center.

Mrs. Brooks was born Aug. 30, 1908, in Knobnoster, Mo. She lived in this area her entire life. She was a homemaker, owned Maid-Rite, and worked as a cook at McCoy School. She was a member of the Pioneer Women`s Democratic Club, Tops, Truman Medical Center-East Auxiliary, Special Ministries and the Women`s Club at Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints Walnut Park Congregation. She was proceeded in death by her husband, Henry Brooks, in 1987.

Her survivors include three daughters, Bettye Long, of Independence, Barbara Litchford, of Parris, Tenn., Ruth Ann Troyer, of Carthage, Mo.; a son, Henry Albert Brooks, of Mt. Joy, Pa.; eight grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Speaks Midtown Chapel. Visitation will be 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the chapel. Burial will be in Oak Ridge Memory Gardens.

ESTA ELLIOTT

Esta Elliott, 81, Independence, died Thursday, Sept. 25, 1997, at Columbia Independence Regional Health Center.

Mrs. Elliott was born Nov. 12, 1915, in Carrollton, Mo. She was a homemaker and a legal secretary. She was a 50-year member of the Calio Chapter 44, Order of the Eastern Star. She was a member of Fairmont Christian Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Clark Elliott on Jan. 26, 1978.

Her survivors include a son, Jerry Elliott, Lee`s Summit; two grandsons, Brett Elliott and Scott Elliott; a brother, Ercil Cochran, Shawnee, Okla.; and four great-grandchildren.

Services will be 3 p.m. Tuesday at D.W. Newcomer`s Sons Floral Hills Chapel. Burial will be in Floral Hills Memorial Gardens. Friends may call from 2 to 3 p.m. Tuesday at the chapel.

MARY GEORGINE GARVINO

Mary Georgine Gravino, 78, formerly of Lake Lotawana, died Thursday, Sept. 25. 1997 at Mariner Health in Olathe, Kan.

Mrs. Gravino was born March 24, 1919, in Independence. She was a quality control employee at Lake City Army Ammunition Plant. She was a member of the Buckner United Methodist Church, the Lake Lotawana Community Club, American Legion Auxillary Unit 153 and LeFeems Cabane 1510. She lived in Lake Lotawana for 45 years.

She was proceeded in death by her husband, Joseph H. Gravino, in 1986; and by a son, Joseph H. Gravino Jr., in 1977.

Her survivors include two sons, Ernest H. Cooper, of Olathe, and Kevin L. Gravino, of Prairie Village, Kan.; two daughters, Mary Jay Williamson, of Crystal Lake, Ill., and Deborah Jo Samyn, of Mound City, Kan.; two sisters, Alma Bernard and Loretta Nickelson, both of Independence; seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Services will be 9:30 a.m. Tuesday at D.W. Newcomer`s Sons Blue Springs Chapel. Burial will be at Mount Olivet cemetery in Raytown. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the Blue Springs Chapel. Donations may be made to the Hospice of Olathe.

BETTY J. HOOVER

Betty J. Hoover, 68, Independence, died Thursday, Sept. 25, 1997.

Mrs. Hoover was born Jan. 11, 1929, in Lexington, Mo., and had lived in the Kansas City area since 1945. She had been a cook in the Kansas City area for many years. She was a member of Hall Cumorah Restoration Branch, Independence.

Her survivors include her husband, Jesse Hoover of the home; three children, Carole Hudson, Jesse Hoover Jr., and Shari Walker, all of Independence; three brothers, Donald Crowe and Jack Crowe, both of Independence, and Luther Crowe, Lakeside, Ariz.; her stepmother of 54 years, Mary Crow, Lexington; 11 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.She was preceded in death by two sons, James Alan Hoover and John Hoover.

Services will be 2 p.m. Monday at Speaks Suburban Chapel. Burial will be in Oak Ridge cemetery. Friends may call from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday at the chapel. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the tuition fund at Center Place Restoration School, 819 W. Waldo, Independence, Mo. 64050; or to the American Diabetic Association or to the American Heart Association.

RONALD F. KNAPP

Ronald F. Knapp, 60, died Thursday, Sept. 25, 1997, at the Medical Center of Independence.

Mr. Knapp was born April 29, 1937, in Independence. He was a life-long resident. He worked as fleet manager for Heilig Myers. He was a member of Coventry Estates Baptist Church, Promise Keepers, the Southern Baptist Convention, and was a sponsor of the Independence Neighborhood Council. He served in the Army as chaplain`s assistant.

His survivors include a wife, Beverly Knapp, of the home; three sons, Todd A. Knapp, of Springfield, Mo., Cris A. Schubert, of Chasebury, Wis., Brent R. Schubert, of Independence; two daughters, Rhonda M. Clevenger, of Lee`s Summit, and Tina R. Larson, of Independence;two brothers, Tim L. Knapp and Rodney D. Knapp, both of Independence; two sisters, Joyce E. Morgan, of Pueblo, Colo., and Sheila M. Knapp, of Independence; and eight grandchildren.

Services will be 10 a.m. Monday at Coventry Estates Baptist Church. Friends may call from 2:30 to 4 p.m. Sunday at Carson and Sons chapel. Burial will be at Mound Grove cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the church.

THOMAS G. MELTON

Dr. Thomas G. Melton, 77, of Independence, died Thursday, Sept. 25, 1997, at his home.

Dr. Melton was born Nov. 28, 1919, in Mowrystown, Ohio. He attended University of Iowa and the University of Dubuque, Iowa, where he graduated Cum Laud, with degrees in pharmacy, biology and chemistry. He then completed a Master of Divinity degree at the University of Dubuque, followed by additional post-graduate work at both Union Theological Seminary of New York and the University of Omaha Theological Seminary. He earned the Doctor of Technology degree.

During World War II, he served in the United States Army Medical Corps in both the Pacific and European theaters. He attained the rank of Captain and received the Bronze Star and the Purple Heart.

Dr. Melton served as a Presbyterian pastor at the First Presbyterian Church in Waterloo, Iowa; First Presbyterian Church in Estherville, Iowa; First Presbyterian Church of Waukegan, Ill.; and the First Presbyterian Church in Independence, where he served for 28 years. He was elected Pastor Emeritus of the First Presbyterian Church in Independence upon his retirement. He then served the Pine Ridge Presbyterian Church in North Kansas City and the First Presbyterian Church of St. Joseph, Mo.

He was active in the Independence community, serving on numerous committees and boards including the City of Independence Sister City Committee, the City of Independence Heritage Commission, the Midtown/Truman Road Corridor Redevelopment Corp., the Sunshine School Board, the YMCA Board and the Boys` Club Board. He was listed in "Who`s Who in the Midwest, " "Who`s Who in Religion, " and "Who`s Who in the Protestant Clergy."

His survivors include his wife of 50 years, Jean E. Melton of the home; one daughter, Nancy Melton-Helal; two sons, David Melton and Thomas Melton Jr.; three grandchildren, Eric Helal, Sara Melton and Laura Melton; and a nephew, Dr. Burt Faison.

A memorial service will be 10 a.m. Monday at the First Presbyterian Church in Independence. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the Trust Fund of the First Presbyterian Church of Independence; Hospice, in care of Columbia Independence Regional Health Center; or to the American Cancer Society, 703 East 63rd Street, Kansas City, Mo. 64113. Arrangements are under the direction of D.W. Newcomer`s Sons, Noland Road Chapel.

ROSALIE NOLAND

Rosalie Noland, 72, Lawson, Mo., died Friday, Sept. 19, 1997, at North Kansas City Hospital.

Mrs. Noland had been employed by a garment factory in Blue Springs for nine years, retiring in 1984. She had lived in Lawson for the past two years. She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles "Dub" Noland in 1991 and a brother, Joseph Button in 1961.She was a Methodist.

Her survivors include three sons, David Noland, Eldon, Mo., Mike Noland, Lawson, and Charles Noland Jr., Cameron, Mo.; a daughter, Juanita Saddler, Blue Springs; two brothers, C.J. "Bud" Button, Kansas City, Kan., and Bill Button, Linwood, Kan.; three sisters, Ruby Axon, Lansfield, Ga., Betty Hatfield, Lacine, Kan., and Janette Shull, Gladstaone, Mo.; 11 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Graveside services will be 11 a.m. Oct. 4 at Salem cemetery, U.S. 24, Independence. Arrangements by New Salem Funeral Home.

ALTA A. RISINGER

Alta Alice Risinger, 90, Grandview, formerly of Lake Tapawingo, died Friday, Sept. 26, 1997, at the Olathe Medical Center, Olathe, Kan.

Mrs. Risinger was born Oct. 15, 1906, in Jackson County and had lived most of her life in Lake Tapawingo area. She had taught school for many years in rural Independence and Blue Springs. She and her late husband, Charles Risinger, were co-owners and operators of Risinger Implement Co. and Risinger Berry Farm. She was a member of St. Luke`s United Church of Christ, Independence. She was active for many years in scouting.

Her survivors include a son, Charles Risinger, Paola, Kan.; two grandsons, Brad Risinger, Overland Park, Kan., and Greg Risinger, Holden, Mo.; and two great-grandsons, Chad Risinger and Gregory Risinger.

Graveside services will be 1 p.m. Monday at Woodlawn cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of George C. Carson & Sons.

KATHRYN L. "SEAGULL" STEARNS

Kathryn Lisa "Seagull" Stearns, 32, Albuquerque, N.M., formerly of Blue Springs, died Thursday, Sept. 18, 1997, in Albuquerque, N.M.

She was a graduate of Blue Springs High School. She earned a bachelor`s degree in art therapy and a master`s degree in special education from the University of New Mexico.

Her survivors include her mother, Wilma Stearns, Blue Springs; her father, Calvin Stearns, Reynoldsburg, Ohio; a brother, William Stearns; sisters, Sally Stearns and Kelly Lyn Stearns; nieces, Kelly Jo Stearns, Jessalyn Stearns and Carrie and Angie Stearns; two nephews, Michael Stearns and Bill Stearns; her stepmother, Wanda Stearns; and her stepbrother, Steve Stearns.

A service celebrating her life will be at 7 p.m. Monday at the Silent Unity Chapel, Missouri 350 and Colbern Road. In lieu of flowers, her parents suggests contributions to the Alliance for the Mentally Ill of Kansas City, 406 West 34th, Suite506, Kansas City, Mo. 64111.

LEE SUTTON

Lee Sutton, 79, Blue Springs, died Tuesday, Sept. 23, at St. Mary`s Hospital of Blue Springs.

Mr. Suttonwas born March 20, 1918, in Clark, S.D. He later lived in Burlington, Colo., where he was owner and operator of Hoof and Horn Restaurant. He moved to the Blue Springs area in 1976.

He worked for the Blue Springs School District from 1976 to 1984 when he retired. He was a member of the Church of the Nazarene. He was proceeded in death by his wife, Dollie Sutton, in 1997.

His survivors include a son, Duane Lee Sutton, Pleasant Hill, Mo.; a daughter, Barbara J. Mead, Blue Springs; a brother, Lyle Sutton, Vinita Okla.; a sister, Maxine Hinsch, Ilse, Minn.; four grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 3 p.m. Saturday, at Mt. Moriah and Freeman Chapel. Burial will be in Mount Moriah cemetery.

SHIRLEY A. CRUSE WALTER

Shirley A. Cruse Walter, 45, Blue Springs, died Thursday, Sept. 25, 1997, at her home.

Mrs. Walter was born April 12, 1952, in St. Louis. She had lived in Ludlow, Mo., before moving to the greater Kansas City area 30 years ago. For 10 years she worked as a sales representative for The Jones Store in Independence. She was a member of the River Boulevard Baptist Church.

Her survivors include her husband, Brad H. Walter of the home; two sons, Brandon H. Walter and Andrew J. Walter, both of the home; a daughter, Lori Moon, Blue Springs; a brother, John W. Cruse, Wheeling, Mo.; three sisters, Janice T. Michael, Overland Park, Kan., Karen Sue Howell, Lee`s Summit, and Dixie L. Cruse, Hyattsville, Md.; and two grandsons.

Services will be 10 a.m. Monday at Speaks Suburban Chapel. Burial will be in Floral Hills East cemetery. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Sunday at the chapel. The family suggests contributions to the Independence Community Gift of Hope Hospice fund.

ROBERT M. ANDERSON

Robert "Bob" McClelland Anderson, 76, Longmont, Colo., formerly of Independence, died Friday, May 16, 1997, in Denver.

Mr. Anderson was born Feb. 5, 1921, in Red Oak, Iowa. He was a graduate of Graceland College and the University of Indiana.

He was an elder in The Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and served as pastor for congregations in Independence, Indiana and Colorado. He worked for AT&T Technologies for 35 years as chief of benefit organization, retiring in 1985. He was a member of the Army Air Corp during World War II.

Survivors include his wife, Betty, of the home; one son, Rob Anderson, Minneapolis; three daughters, Kathryn Millner, Loveland, Colo., Nancy Vargas, Saratoga, Wyo, and Betsy Christian, Longmont, Colo.; two brothers, William Anderson, Independence, and Eugene Smiley, St. Joseph, Mo.; five sisters, Rosemary Fletcher, Texas, Patricia Gardner and Phyllis Wilson, both of Georgia, Marion Taylor, Independence, and Wilma Clifton, South Carolina; and six grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the RLDS Church Building Fund, Longmont Branch, 641 Martin St., Longmont, Colo. 80501.

GUY CORNELL BROADWAY

Guy Cornell Broadway, 75, Cookeville, Tenn., died at Cookeville General Hospital, Sunday, May 25, 1997.

Mr.Broadway was born in Cooney Springs, Tenn., on Aug. 31, 1921. He was a pipe fitter in the plumbing business. He served in the Flying Tigers in China, Burma and India and the Army Air Corp during World War II. He was a member of the United Association of Journeymen and Apprentices of the Plumbing and Pipe Industry of the United States and Canada for 41 years.

His survivors include a son, Michael Cornell Broadway, Overland Park, Kan.; two daughters, Sharon Michelle Smith, Independence, and Melody Colleen Peugh, Armarillo, Texas; 11 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Cremation. A memorial service will be held at the Good Shepherd Christian Church, 111 South Woods Chapel Road, Blue Springs. at 2 p.m. June 7.
