ROBERT A. CHAPMAN

Robert A. Chapman, 65, Independence, died Friday, July 24, 1998, at Independence Regional Health Center.

Mr. Chapman was born Aug. 6, 1933, in Independence, and had lived in this area most of his life. He was a millwright for Ralston Purina for 35 years, retiring in 1995. He was an avid fisherman.

His survivors include his wife, Diana Kay Chapman, Independence; six children, Ethan Chapman and Lynn Cowan, both of Independence, Emma Jean Chapman Harris, San Jose, Calif., Shirley Chapman, Northern California, Deborah Chapman, Tempe, Ariz., and Michael Allen Chapman, Santa Cruz, Calif.; his father, Roy Chapman, and one sister, Alice Chapman Ruble, both of Independence; seven grandchildren; and three nieces.

Graveside services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Mound Grove cemetery. The family suggests contributions to the Center Place Restoration School.

DONALD L. KEMMERLY

Donald L. Kemmerly, 82, Independence, died Sunday, July 26, 1998, at the Independence Regional Health Center.

Mr. Kemmerly was born Aug. 13, 1915, in Kansas City. He worked for Vendo, retiring as an office manager in the parts department in 1977. He was a member of the Coventry Estates Baptist Church.

His survivors include his wife of 50 years, Venita R. Kemmerly of the home; one sister, Betty L. Rees, Kansas City; three nieces, Linda Rees, Lois Cogan and Leslie Welch; and five nephews, Steve Kemmerly, Paul Kemmerly, Phillip Kemmerly, David Kemmerly and Chris Arthur.

Graveside services will be 1 p.m. Wednesday at Greenlawn cemetery, Kansas City. Friends may call from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Wednesday at the George C. Carson & Sons Independence Chapel. The family suggests contributions to the American Diabetes Association.

MARTIN E.R. LINGLE

Martin E.R. Lingle, 81, Independence, died Saturday, July 25, 1998, at the Veterans Administration Medical Center.

Mr. Lingle was born Feb. 11, 1917, in Kansas City, Kan., grew up in Sedalia, Mo., and had lived in Independence most of his life. He was the co-owner/manager of Crown Craft Manufacturing Co. for 30 years, retiring in 1981. He was an Army Air Corps veteran of

World War II, and was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1000 and Disabled American Veterans No. 10, He was also a member of Mount Washington Masonic Lodge, Scottish Rite and the Ararat Shrine, and was a graduate of Smith Cotton High School, Sedalia.

His survivors include his wife, Bertha A. Lingle of the home; one son, James W. Lingle, Memphis, Tenn.; one daughter, Karen Lee Francisco, Honolulu; two brothers, Cleo M. Lingle, Texas, and Paul Lingle, Illinois; two grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.

Services will be 10 a.m. Thursday at the Speaks Midtown Chapel. Burial will be in Mount Washington cemetery. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday at the chapel, where Masonic services will be held at 7:30 p.m. The family suggests contributions to the Gift of Hope Hospice, American Cancer Society or the RLDS Transformation 2000 Fund.

JAMES J. "JIM" SLANKARD SR.

James J. "Jim" Slankard Sr., 72, Holden, Mo., died Sunday, July 26, 1998, at his home.

Mr. Slankard was an Army veteran of World War II and served in Korea. He was a member of Holden American Legion Post 2, Loyal Order of Moose Lodge 1999, and the Charles S. Gleed Chapter of the Telephone Pioneers of America. He was a past cubmaster of Boy Scout Pack 284.

His survivors include his wife of 54 years, Gennylenn Slankard of the home; one son, James Slankard Jr., Holden; one brother, Bill Slankard, Blue Springs; one sister, Myrtle Inman, Lone Jack; five grandchildren: Austin Slankard, Michael Slankard, Jessica Slankard, Elizabeth Slankard and Sarah Slankard; and many nieces and nephews.

Services will be 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Langsford Funeral Home, Lee`s Summit. Friends may call from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. The family suggests contributions to The House of Prayer Fellowship Church, P.O. Box 243, Lone Jack, Mo. 64070.

LEOTA F. ANDREWS

Leota Faye Andrews, 86, Stockton, Mo., formerly of Independence, died Monday, March 30, 1998, at the Stockton Nursing Home.

Mrs. Andrews was born Dec. 10, 1911, in Laclede, Mo., and had lived in Independence from 1947 until moving to Stockton in 1993. She was a member of Carlisle Baptist Church and the Sugar Creek American Legion Ladies Auxiliary. Before her retirement, she had worked at the S&H Green Stamp Redemption Center in Independence and later as a cook for the Kansas City School District. She was preceded in death by her husband, Elmer L. Andrews in 1963.

Her survivors include two daughters, Janet L. Hunter, Independence, and Bonnie J. Haynes, Stockton; three sons, Troy D. Andrews, Independence, Thomas E. Andrews, Belton, and James D. Andrews, Pensacola, Fla.; 11 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

Services will be 10 a.m. Thursday at George C. Carson & Sons Independence Chapel. Burial will be in Mount Moriah cemetery, Kansas City. Friends may call from 7 to 9 tonight at the chapel. The family suggests contributions to the Carlisle Baptist Church, 812 S. Sterling, Independence.

STEPHEN E. BEVELLE

Stephen E. BeVelle, 48, Independence, died Monday, March 30, 1998, at his home.

Mr. BeVelle was born March 30, 1950, in Washington, D.C. He was a graduate of the Southwest School in Ludlow, Mo., and a graduate of Missouri Western State College in St. Joseph, Mo. He had been employed as a Deputy Juvenile officer with the Clay County Juvenile Court for the past 10 years. Prior to that he was a Deputy Juvenile officer in Jackson County for eight years.

His survivors include his wife, Esther BeVelle; a son, Perry BeVelle, both of the home; a foster daughter, Michelle Fostek, St. Joseph, Mo.; his parents, Stanley and Maxine BeVelle, Mooresville, Mo.; a sister, Ginger Chappell, Chillicothe, Mo.; two brothers, Claude P. BeVelle, Mooresville, Mo., and Jerry BeVelle, Springfield, Mo.; and aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a son, Michael BeVelle on Dec. 31, 1994.

Services will be at 10 a.m. April 2, 1998, at the Lindley Funeral Home. Burial will be in Edgewood cemetery, Chillicothe. Friends may call from 6 to 8 tonight and from 8 a.m. until service time at the Lindley Funeral Home, Chillicothe. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society and left at the funeral home or mailed to the Lindley Funeral Home, P.O. Box 47, Chillicothe, Mo. 64601.

STANLEY W. "STAN" CALVERT

Stanley William "Stan" Calvert, 75, Independence, died Tuesday, March 31, 1998, at the Medical Center of Independence.

Mr. Calvert was born in Vera, Ill., and had lived in Thayer, Mo., before moving to Independence in 1945. He was a Navy Veteran of World War II, serving on the USS Quick as a Boatswain's Mate, completing more than 17 round trips across the Atlantic on convoy duty. After coming to Independence he was employed at Brown's Feed and Grocery and than later at Brown's Service Station. In 1955 he leased the service station located on the northwest corner of 23rd Street and Lee's Summit Road, he then moved it to the northeast corner and continued to operate "Stan's Service" until his retirement in 1988. He was a member of the American Legion Tirey J. Ford Post 21 and was a charter member of St. Matthew United Methodist Church.

His survivors include his wife of 49 years, Virginia Calvert of the home; two sons, Michael W. Calvert, Independence, and Richard A. Calvert, Polo, Mo.; three daughters, Patricia A. Townsend, Rebecca L. Calvert and Kimbra D. Dinwiddle, all of Independence; three brothers, Robert E. Calvert, Independence, Leslie F. Calvert, Oak Grove, and Ronald B. Calvert, Blue Springs; two sisters, Susie Switzer, Independence, and Thelma F. Quick, Lowry City, Mo.; and five grandchildren, Sean Michael Calvert, Carrie Elizabeth Townsend, Sara Kathleen Calvert, Amanda Marie Townsend and Tyler Dinwiddle.

Services will be 1:30 p.m. Friday at the Speaks Suburban Chapel. Burial will be in Lobb cemetery. Friends may call from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday at the chapel. The family suggests contributions to the St. Matthew United Methodist Church Memorial Fund.

RICHARD L. EASTERWOOD

Richard L. Easterwood, 85, Lincoln, Mo., died Tuesday, March 31, 1998, at his home.

Mr. Easterwood was born Nov. 11, 1912, in Warrensburg, Mo. He was a welder by trade. He was also self-employed as an over-the-road truck driver for many years. He had made his home in Johnson County, Mo., for many years and had lived in Kansas City, Independence, and Laurie, Mo., before moving to Lincoln in 1993. He was a member of the Church of the Brethren of Leeton, Mo.

His survivors include his wife of 52 years, Marjorie Easterwood of the home; a daughter, Sue Burk, Kansas City; two grandsons, Dean Keely and Doug Easterwood; a granddaughter, Keely Lewis; a great-grandson, Bill Keely; and a great-granddaughter, Abigail Duncan Easterwood.

Services will be 10 a.m. Friday at the Davis-Miller Funeral home, Lincoln. Burial will be in Lincoln (Mo.) cemetery. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

APOSTLE MARVIN E. ELY

Apostle Marvin Ellis Ely, 76, Houston, Mo., died Monday, March 30, 1998, at the Independence Regional Health Center.

Mr. Ely was born Dec. 8, 1921, in Meeker, Colo., and had lived in Grand Junction, Colo., before moving to Houston three years ago. He was the owner and operator of Ely Orchards in Grand Junction before retiring in 1991. He was a missionary and apostle for the Church of Christ (Temple Lot). He was a volunteer fireman for the Central Orchard Mesa Fire Department in Grand Juction before his retirement. He was an Army Air Corps veteran of World War II.

His survivors include his wife, Berniece Ely of the home; a son, Arden E. Ely, Houston; a daughter, Janice Moore, Denver; a brother, Robert L. Ely, and a sister, Margie Downs, both of Grand Junction; three grandchildren, Jeff Moore, Tamma Floyd, and Chris Ely; and a great-granddaughter, Victoria Floyd.

Services will be 3 p.m. Thursday at the Church of Christ (Temple Lot), Independence. Friends may call from 2 to 3 p.m. Thursday at the church. Cremation will follow the service. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the Missionary Fund of the church.

NELLIE J. HICKLE

Nellie Jeanette Simpson Hickle, 72, Independence, died Sunday, March 29, 1998, at Vencor Hospital, Kansas City.

Mrs. Hickle was born Jan. 22, 1926, in Kansas City and was a lifelong area resident. She was self-employed in advertising. She was of the Catholic faith.

Her survivors include a daughter, Betty Anderson, a sister, Betty Dickhout, two granddaughters, Rachelle Smith and Stephanie Carrender, a great-grandson, Cody Barron, and two great-granddaughters, Kayle Carrender and Kelsy Carrender, all of Independence.

Graveside services will be 10 a.m. Thursday at Mount Washington cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of George C. Carson & Sons Independence Chapel.

TERESA L. MANTOOTH

Teresa Lavonne Baker Mantooth, 36, formerly of Independence, died Thursday, March 26, 1998, at the University of Washington Medical Center, Seattle, Wash.

Mrs. Mantooth was born Aug. 7, 1961, in Independence.

Her survivors include her family, Mitchell, Holly and Mindy Mantooth of the home; her parents, Clara Baker, Raytown, and Vander Baker, Seattle; three sisters, Linda Modrak, Denver, Colo., Brenda Riggs and Edie Dozier, both of Lee's Summit; her grandparents, Kenneth and Edith Lawrence, Lee's Summit; nieces and nephews, Jeremy and Miranda Rigg, Cody and Brandon Modrak, Krystal and Keenan Dozier, and Connie and Sarah Johnson.

Services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at the Langsford Funeral Home, Lee's Summit. Burial will be in Floral Hills East cemetery, Lee's Summit. Friends may call from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. BETTY J. POZIN

Betty J. Pozin, 73, Independence, died Monday, March 30, 1998, at the Columbia Independence Regional Health Care.

Mrs. Pozin ws born Dec. 23, 1924, in Kansas City, and had lived her entire life in this area. She was a secretary for many years for accounting firms and spent her later years as a homemaker.

Her survivors include her husband of 49 years, Richard Pozin of the home; a son, Steve Pozin, Overland Park, Kan.; and a grandson, Jimmy.

Memorial services will be 2 p.m. Thursday at the New Salem Funeral Home. The family suggests contributions to the charity of your choice.

MARGIE M. PROCTOR

Margie Marie Proctor, 71, Independence, died Monday, March 30, 1998, at Independence Regional Health Center.

Ms. Proctor was born March 1, 1927, in Myrtle, Mo. She had worked at Independence Regional Health Center.

Her survivors include four daughters, Margie A. Keown and Christine A. Squires, both of Independence, and Roxana A. Bulkley and Jackwyn A. Fillpot, both of Fort Collins, Colo.; four sisters, Bernice Glenn and Wilma Heatherly, both of Independence, and Rose Lee Rue and Barbara Talent, both of Springfield, Mo.; eight grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Services will be 3 p.m. Thursday at Park Lawn Funeral Home. Burial will be in Green Lawn cemetery, Kansas City. Friends may call from 7 to 9 tonight at the funeral home.

CYNTHIA S. SEE

Cynthia Suzanne See, 41, Kansas City, died Monday, March 30, 1998, at St. Luke's Hospital, Kansas City.

Mrs. See was born Oct. 29, 1956, in Clinton, Mo. She was a lifelong area resident of Kansas City and Independence. She was a member of Maywood Baptist Church. She had been employed by Nutter & Associates Inc. for more than 17 years. She managed the Rockhurst Rental Properties for more than 15 years and before that had been manager for the Chequers Apartments. She became an accredited resident manager of the Institute of Real Estate Management and a member of the Kansas City chapter. In 1989 she received the Accredited Resident Manager of the Year Award.

Her survivors include her husband, Jerald J. See of the home; two daughters, Amanda B. Rust and Traci J. See; three sons, James Ryan Rust, Kenneth Michael Rust and Jerald Luke See, all of the home; her mother, Lois Barnes, Independence; a brother, Daniel Barnes, Sunrise Beach, Mo.; and two sisters, Angela Crawford and Anita Kay Workman, both of Independence.

Services will be 10 a.m. Friday at George C. Carson & Sons Independence Chapel. Burial will be in Mount Washington cemetery. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the chapel.

EMMA M. BARKER

Emma M. Barker, 85, Odessa, died Tuesday, June 2, 1998, at St. Mary`s Hospital of Blue Springs.

Mrs. Barker was born April 27, 1913, south of Lexington, Mo., and was a lifelong Odessa area resident. She worked at the Lake City Army Ammunition Plant from 1965 to 1969, Higginsville Garment Factory from 1960 to 1965, and the Odessa Shoe Factory from 1955 to 1960. She was a member of the First Baptist Church, and had attended Prairie Valley Rural School. Her husband, Lawrence Barker, died in 1985.

Her survivors include one brother, Waller N. "Buck" Small, and two sisters, Margaret P. Kroeck and Violet J. Payne, all of Odessa; and several nieces and nephews.

Services will be 11 a.m. Thursday at the Ralph O. Jones Funeral Home, Odessa. Burial will be in Odessa cemetery. Friends may call until 7 tonight at the funeral home. The family suggests contributions to the Odessa cemetery Association.

MARGARET M. BROWN

Margaret M. Brown, 80, Phoenix, Ariz., formerly of Independence, died Monday, June 1, 1998.

Mrs. Brown was born Oct. 19, 1917, in Kansas City, and lived in this area most of her life, moving to Arizona in 1973. She was a member of the North Phoenix Baptist Church.

Her survivors include one daughter, Joanne M. Owen, Phoenix; one son, Gary R. Brown, Independence; two brothers, Lester Weston Jr. and John "Jack" Weston, both of Kansas City; one sister, Virginia Albin, Chilhowee, Mo.; five grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Services will be 3 p.m. Friday at Park Lawn Funeral Home, Kansas City. Burial will be in Memorial Park cemetery, Kansas City. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
