VELMA L. ELLIS

Velma L. Thompson Ellis, 81, Independence, died Saturday, Aug. 22, 1998.

Mrs. Ellis was born Oct. 9, 1916, in Independence. She was a member and past matron of Mount Washington Order of the Eastern Star 423, Daughter of the Nile 96, Social Order of Beaucants 150, Ararat Shrine Ladies Needle Guild and Rebekah Lodge. She was also a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church.

Her survivors include her husband, Austin E. Ellis of the home; two daughters, Suzanne Salva, Warsaw, Mo., and Mary Lou Gildea, Springfield, Pa.; a stepdaughter, Karen Diaczyk, St. Petersburg, Fla.; two stepsons, Bill Ellis, Independence, and Steve Ellis, California; one brother, Leonard Israel, Independence; seven grandchildren, Chris and Bill Salva, Timothy, Suzanne, Catherine and Richard Gildea Jr., and Sharon McKinney; seven great-grandchildren; and one step great-grandson.

Services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at the George C. Carson & Sons Independence Chapel. Burial will be in Woodlawn cemetery. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday at the chapel. The family suggests contributions to the church.

GLADYS N. GRAHAM

Gladys N. Graham, 86, Independence, died Saturday, Aug. 22, 1998, at the Monterey Park Nursing Center.

Mrs. Graham was born Sept. 23, 1911, in Galesburg, Ill. Her husband, Arthur F. Graham, died in 1970.

Her survivors include a sister and brother-in-law, Margaret and Albert Van Wormer, Independence; and many nieces and nephews.

Services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Sheil Colonial Chapel, Raytown. Burial will be in Calvary cemetery, Kansas City. Friends may call from 1 to 2 p.m. Tuesday at the chapel.

NATHAN D. PAYNE

Nathan D. Payne, 87, Kansas City, died Sunday, Aug. 23, 1998, at the Grandview Manor Care Center.

Mr. Payne was born Nov. 26, 1910, in Independence, and was a lifelong area resident. He was a welder for the Bendix Corp. for more than 26 years, retiring in 1975. He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. His wife, Hazel Ruth Taylor Payne, died in 1990.

His survivors include three sons, Merritt Geer, Archie, Mo., Tom Payne, El Cajon, Calif., Jerry Payne, Topeka; two daughters, H. Marie Vestal, Peculiar, Mo., and Nancy Chipman, Olathe, Kan.; 10 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Speaks Suburban Chapel. Burial will be in Mount Washington cemetery. The family suggests contributions to Vencare Hospice.

TERRY E. WALLACE

Terry Edward Wallace, 47, Lee's Summit, died Friday, Aug. 21, 1998, at his home.

Mr. Wallace was born March 22, 1951, in Kansas City, and was a lifelong area resident. He was the owner/operator of the Golden Carpet Store in Lee's Summit, and a member of the Lee's Summit Chamber of Commerce.

His survivors include two sons, Mike Wallace, Independence, and David Wallace, Lenexa, Kan.; one daughter, Rachel Wallace, Lee's Summit; his mother, Lucy Wallace, Blue Springs; one brother, Gary Wallace, St. Louis; two sisters, Debbie Flota, Blue Springs, and Paulette Eads, Independence; and two grandsons, Zachary and Cameron.

Memorial services will be 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Park Lawn Chapel, Kansas City. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the Terry Wallace Memorial Fund, in care of BC National Bank, 651 N.E. Woods Chapel Road, Lee's Summit, Mo. 64064.

DONALD R. YOUNG

Donald R. Young, 74, Raytown, died Saturday, Aug. 22, 1998, at his home.

Mr. Young was born Feb. 20, 1924, in Topeka. He was an insulation foreman for Asbestos Workers Local 27, retiring in 1985. He was an Army veteran of World War II, and a member of Nativity of Mary Catholic Church.

His survivors include his wife of 50 years, Faye K. Young of the home; a daughter, Sandra L. Duncan, Kansas City; one son, David F. Young, Independence; one brother, Bill Young, Stockton, Mo.; and two grandchildren, Christopher Duncan and Theresa Rochell Young.

Mass of Christian burial will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at the church, 10017 E. 36th St. Burial will be in Floral Hills Memorial Gardens, Kansas City. Friends may call from 6:30 to 8 tonight at D.W. Newcomer's Sons Floral Hills Chapel, Kansas City, where prayer services will be held at 7 p.m. The family suggests contributions to the Shawnee Mission St. Luke's Hospice, 9100 W. 74th, Shawnee Mission, Kan. 66202.

REV. J. CALVIN KEELING

The Rev. Mr. J. Calvin Keeling, 72, Bakersfield, Calif., formerly of Independence, died Tuesday, Dec. 15, 1998, at Bakersfield Memorial Hospital.

Mr. Keeling was born Dec. 12, 1926, in Kansas City. He had been a pastor in the Church of the Brethren for many years.

His survivors include his wife, Thelma Keeling of the home; two sons, Monty Keeling, Goshen, Ind., and John Keeling, Bakersfield; three sisters, Catherine Guyer, Beulah Norton and Elizabeth Baysinger, all of Independence; and seven grandchildren.

Graveside services will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Oak Ridge Memory Gardens. Friends may call from noon until 1 p.m. Saturday at the Speaks Midtown Chapel.

BETTY A. ALLEN

Betty Ann Allen, 73, Lake Lotawana, Mo., died Wednesday, Dec. 16, 1998, at Lee's Summit Hospital.

Mrs. Allen was born Oct. 11, 1925, in Kansas City, and was a lifelong area resident. She was preceded in death by her husband, Bernard "Ben" Allen in October 1998.

Her survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Steve and Carol Allen, Maysville, Ga.; two daughters and sons-in-law, Mary and Bob Shields, Kansas City, and Sue and Tim Renfroe, Oak Grove; seven grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Memorial services will be 2 p.m. Saturday at George C. Carson & Sons Funeral Home, 9100 Blue Ridge Boulevard, Kansas City.

FLORICE S. BOWLING

Florice S. Bowling, 85, Odessa, died Thursday, Feb. 5, 1999, at New Haven Nursing Home.

Mrs. Bowling was born June, 4, 1913, in Monett, Mo. She was a waitress at the Roadway Inn, Oak Grove. She was a member of the American Women's Business Association, Gateway Chapter, Kansas City; LaSertoma Club and volunteered for several organizations including the Shawnee Mission School District and Cancer Action Inc.

Her survivors include one son, Don Bowling, Stover, Mo.; three daughters, Marie Pickett, Loomis, Calif., Llana Bernard, Chicago, and Donna Clark, Marsh Harbor, Bahamas; one sister, Melba Ebelt, Houston.

Private burial will be held at McKendree cemetery, Odessa, Mo.

DOROTHY L. SHAWGO

Dorothy L. Shawgo, 74, Independence, died Monday, March 1, 1999, at St. Mary's Hospital of Blue Springs.

Mrs. Shawgo was born June 29, 1924, in Kansas City. She was a unit secretary for Independence Regional Health Center for 17 years, retiring in the late 1980s. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Independence and the Gamma Master Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi.

Her survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Gayle and James Kenny, Raytown, and Linda and Arthur Owsley, Independence; his stepmother, Beulah C. Johnson, Riverside, Mo.; four grandchildren, Pamela Cullum, Emily Sappingfield, Nicholas Kenny and Brendan Kenny; and one great-grandson, Tyler Cullum.

Services will be 1 p.m. Thursday at D.W. Newcomer's Sons Floral Hills Chapel, Kansas City. Burial will be in Floral Hills Memorial Gardens, Kansas City. Friends may call from 6 to 8 tonight at the chapel, with a Beta Sigma Phi service at 7:30 p.m. The family suggests contributions in her memory to the First Presbyterian Church of Independence Memorial Fund, 100 N. Pleasant St., Independence, Mo 64050.

WALTER J. CONWAY

Walter Joseph Conway, 73, Independence, died Monday, March 1, 1999, at his home. Mr. Conway was born Sept. 22, 1925, in Minneapolis, Minn. He retired as assistant director at Psychiatric Services for the state of Missouri in 1987 after 23 years of service. He was a member of the RLDS Stone Church congregation, and a Navy veteran of World War II. His survivors include his wife, Julia Ann Conway of the home; four sons, Stephen Joseph Conway, Chicago, Charles Mark Conway, San Diego, Calif., Jonathan Paul Conway, Waldorf, Md., and Timothy Wayne Conway, Gainesville, Fla.; one daughter, ChrisAnn Conway, Linn, Mo.; one brother, Kyle Conway, Independence; two sisters, Patricia Lindamood, San Luis Obispo, Calif., and Phyllis Christenson, Blue Springs; and seven grandchildren. Memorial services will be 3:30 p.m. Saturday at the church. The family suggests contributions to the Kansas City Hospice, 3100 N.E. 83rd St., Suite 2300, Kansas City, Mo. 64119. Arrangements are under the direction of the Speaks Midtown Chapel.

REVEREND ARCHIE D. MIDDLETON

Reverend Archie D. Middleton, 74, Blue Springs, died Monday, March 1, 1999, at the home of his daughter in Springfield, Mo. Rev. Middleton was born Jan. 17, 1925, in Appanoose County, Iowa. He was a pastor in the Kansas City area for over fifty years and was a member of Plaza Heights Baptist Church, Blue Springs. His survivors include his wife, Alvena Middleton; two sons and daughters-in-law, Phil and Marti Middleton, San Antonio, Texas, and Steve and Paula Middleton, Littleton, Colo.; a daughter, Bonnie Middleton, Springfield, Mo.; three brothers, three sisters; and seven grandchildren. Services will be 10 a.m. Thursday at the Plaza Heights Baptist Church, 1500 S.W. Clark Road, Blue Springs. Private burial will be Friday in Maple Park cemetery, Springfield. Friends may call from 6 to 8 tonight at Sheil Colonial Chapel, 11924 East 47th Street, Kansas City. Arrangements are under the direction of the Ayre-Goodwin-Lee, A Heritage Funeral Home, Springfield.

SARAH J. BITZER

Sarah Jane Bitzer, 76, Blue Springs, died Sunday, May 10, 1998, at St. Mary`s Hospital of Blue Springs.

Mrs. Bitzer was born Feb. 18, 1922, in Pulaski, Iowa, and had lived in Blue Springs for 50 years. She was a homemaker and a Baptist. She was preceded in death by her husband, John W. Bitzer Jr. in 1983, and a son, David M. Bitzer on July 6, 1997.

Her survivors include a son, John W. Bitzer III, Independence, three sisters, Mary Kirkhart and Rosetta Parker, Ottumwa, Iowa, and Anna Bell Kimball, Bloomfield, Iowa; a brother, Earl Buck Wheaton, Ottumwa; two half sisters, Beverly Harris, Bloomfield, and Nancy Crawford, Cedar Rapids, Iowa; a half brother, Dick Scott, Overland Park, Kan.; six grandchildren, Debbie Bitzer, Tammy Bowers, Lori Burge, David M. Bitzer Jr., Tracy Bitzer and Terry Bitzer; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Services will be 11 a.m. Thursday at D.W. Newcomer`s Sons Blue Springs Chapel. Interment will be in Blue Springs cemetery. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday at the chapel.

NORMA J. BUNCH

Norma Jean Bunch, 65, Nevada, Mo., formerly of Independence, died Monday, May 11, 1998, at her daughter`s home in Kansas City. Mrs. Bunch was born in Independence and had lived in Nevada for 24 years before returning to this area. She worked in the food service department at the Nevada Rehabilitation Center, and was a member of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. She was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth R.

Bunch in 1993, and a grandson, Jeffery Michael Duerkop in 1993. Her survivors include seven children, Eldo Emerson Eaglen Jr., Cheryl Sue Eaglen, Royce Eaglen, Shawnette Sue Marcel, David Andrew Marcell, Klent Wesley Eaglen and Diane Lynn Stroud; two brothers, Charles White and Kayo White; four sisters, Wanda Maxwell, Betty Wilkerson, Tootie Gillespie and Vera White; 12 grandchildren, Eldo Emerson Eaglen III, Toni Janelle Eaglen and Kara Jean Eaglen, Brian Edward Crowl, Raechel Jean Eaglen and Cortnee Renee Eaglen, Andrew, Kathleen JoAnne and Lynette Sue Duerkop, Kenneth Duane Eaglen, Nicole Lyn Anderson and Jana Lyn Stroud; and eight great-grandchildren.

Services will be 2 p.m. Thursday at the Speaks Midtown Chapel. Burial will be in Mound Grove cemetery. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday at the chapel.

NELLIE M. NETTE

Nellie Mae Nette, 97, Independence, died Saturday, May 9, 1998, at the Rosewood Health Center.

Mrs. Nette was born July 22, 1900, in Wallaceburg, Ontario, Canada, and had lived in this area for 33 years. She was a member of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and attended the College Park congregation.

Her survivors include many nieces and nephews, including Shirley Simmons of Independence.

Graveside services will be 10 a.m. Thursday at Mound Grove cemetery. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Speaks Midtown Chapel. The family suggests contributions to the RLDS Temple Fund.

MELVIN E. CASTEEL

Melvin Eugene Casteel, 43, El Cajon, Calif., died Saturday, Aug. 16, 1997, at a hospital in El Cajon.

Mr. Casteel was born June 17, 1954, in Kansas City. He was a Christian by faith.

His survivors include his mother, Betty Casteel, Oak Grove; four daughters, Carol, Rebecca Marchand, Kansas City, and Alisha Casteel and Crista Leanne Casteel, both of the home; a brother, Ed Casteel, Wichita, Kan.; and two sisters, Diane Bullin, Parkville, Mo., and Kathleen Feagans, Blue Springs.

Services will be 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Webb-Freer Funeral Home, Blue Springs; cremation. Friends may call from 7 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. The family suggests contributions to a trust fund for his children, in care of Webb-Freer Funeral Home, 205 S. 17th St., Blue Springs, Mo. 64015.

CHARLES J. "JOE" CHAFFEE JR.

Charles Joseph "Joe" Chaffee Jr., 65, Oak Grove, died Friday, Aug. 15, 1997, at his home.

Mr. Chaffee was born in Kansas City and had lived in Raytown before moving to Oak Grove in 1966. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Oak Grove. He was an Armco Steel retiree and a former two term Oak Grove School Board member. He was preceded in death by his wife of 45 years, Ann Chaffee.

His survivors include a son, Phil Chaffee, Oak Grove; a daughter, Carol Cox, Pleasant Hill, Mo.; a brother, Jack Chaffee, Oak Grove, and three grandchildren, Jim Cox, Joey Cox and Krissy Chaffee.

He will be cremated and his ashes spread simultaneously with those of his recently deceased wife. An open house for family and friends was Sunday at the Joe Chaffee home. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the Butterfield Youth Services, P.O. Box 333, Marshall, Mo. 65340.

RUBY F. CHAMBERS

Ruby F. Chambers, 77, Independence, died Saturday, Aug. 16, 1997, at Columbia Independence Regional Health Center.

Mrs. Chambers was born June 18, 1920, in Houston.She was a registered nurse.

Her survivors include a daughter, Dorothy Dunlap, Independence; and a brother.

Cremation. Arrangements are under the direction of D.W. Newcomer`s Sons Noland Road Chapel.
