ARTHUR L. BOWEN

Arthur Leon Bowen, 71, Independence, died Tuesday, Jan. 5, 1999, at his home.

Mr. Bowen was born July 13, 1927, in Stigler, Okla. He worked for Standard Oil in Sugar Creek for 32 years, and was an Army veteran of World War II.

His survivors include two sons, David Michael Bowen and James Dennis Bowen, and four grandchildren, Michele, Kristin, Jennifer and Christopher Bowen, all of Independence; two brothers, the Rev. Dale Bowen and Bobby Joe Bowen, both of Oklahoma; one sister, Catherine Bowen; and a longtime companion, Lucille Patterson of Independence.

Services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at the Speaks Suburban Chapel. Burial will be in Oak Ridge Memory Gardens. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Friday at the chapel.

KATHRYN B. KROWN

Kathryn B. Krown, 87, Monticello, Ind., died Sunday, Jan. 3, 1999, at the Monticello Healthcare Center.

Mrs. Krown was born Sept. 26, 1911, in Kansas City, and had been a Monticello resident for 45 years. She was a retired employee of Rockwell International. Her husband, Leroy L. Krown, died Aug. 14, 1986.

No services are scheduled. Burial will be at a later date in Mound Grove cemetery. If you are a relative or know of a relative, call the Voorhis-Draper Funeral Home in Monticello, 219-583-5777.

MARCIA E. WILSON

Marcia E. Wilson, 86, Independence, died Monday, Dec. 28, 1998, at Independence Regional Health Center.

Mrs. Wilson was born Jan. 19, 1912, in Independence, and was lifelong area resident. She was a secretary for many years for the city of Independence at the Power and Light building. She had also worked for Allis Chalmers. She was a member and first president of the Independence Junior Service League, and a member of the Independence Study Club, Kappa Kappa Gamma and the First Christian Church of Independence.

Her survivors include one sister, Brenda Nickson, and two nieces, Janice Simpich and Marcia Ann Davis, all of Colorado Springs, Colo.; and one nephew, Bob Nickson, Connecticut.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Speaks Suburban Chapel. Burial will be in Mount Washington cemetery. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 tonight at the chapel.

Jewell B. Gotway

Jewell B. Gotway, 74, Independence, died Thursday, Jan. 20, 2000, at her home.

Mrs. Gotway was born June 7, 1925, in Alton, Ill., and had lived in the Independence area since 1958. She had worked as an inspector for Parmalee Glass Co. for 15 years until retiring in 1991. She was preceded in death by her husband, Albert Leroy Gotway in 1975.

Her survivors include her son, Robert L. Gotway Sr., Independence; her daughter, Carol Ann Clymer of the home; three brothers, Todd Fry, Raymond Fry and Zeke Fry, all of East Alton, Ill.; her sister, Aleene Hunter, Tulsa, Okla.; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Services will be 1 p.m. Saturday at the Speaks Midtown Chapel. Burial will be in Salem cemetery. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 tonight at the chapel. The family suggests contributions to the American Heart Association.

"Bill" McNeel

"Bill" McNeel, 67, Grain Valley, died Wednesday, Jan. 19, 2000, at St. Mary's Hospital of Blue Springs.

Mr. McNeel was born May 23, 1932, in Centerview, Mo. He married Peggy M. Coen on Oct. 24, 1952. He was an end of the line repair person for General Motors Leeds for 30 years, retiring in 1987. He and his wife remodeled several homes in the Eastern Jackson County area. He enjoyed woodworking and crafts. He was a Baptist.

His survivors include his wife, Peggy McNeel of the home; two sons, Michael McNeel, Independence, and Raymond McNeel, Belton, Mo.; four daughters, Robin Bahner, Blue Springs, Gail Babcock, Oak Grove, Penny Delehant, Buckner, and Jean Schmidt, Edgerton, Kan.; a brother, J.W. McNeel, and a sister, Emma Belle Rutherford, both of Higginsville, Mo.; 15 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Memorial services will be at 3:30 p.m. Saturday at Royer Funeral Home, Grain Valley. Friends may call from 2 to 3:30 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home. The family requests no flowers and suggests contributions to the American Diabetes Association, 9201 Ward Parkway, Suite 300, Kansas City, Mo. 64114.

V. Marie Shackelford

V. Marie Shackelford, 75, Lee's Summit, died Wednesday, Jan. 19, 2000, at Research Medical Center.

Mrs. Shackelford was born Dec. 15, 1924, in Los Angeles. She had worked for Hands Survey Co. and Anderson Survey Co., before retiring from Chicago Title Insurance Co. She was past president and current board member of Special Neighbors Inc. She had been the current treasurer of Lilac Place Neighborhood Council. She was a member of Prime Timers. She was a member of the Grandview RLDS Congregation and had held the priesthood office of Teacher at the church. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Walter J. Young, and her second husband, Lester L. Shackelford.

Her survivors include her son, Dennis J. Young, Buckner; two daughters, Jeanne M. Earnest, Lee's Summit, and Julie A. Shackelford, Independence; eight grandsons, Josh Earnest, Nathan Earnest, Nick Earnest, Samuel Young, Benjamin Young and Peter Young; her stepmother, Gertrude Gorham, Kansas City; and a half brother, James Seward, Overland Park, Kan.

Services will be 2 p.m. Saturday at the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints Grandview Congregation. Burial will be in Memorial Park cemetery, Kansas City. Friends may call from 6 to 8:30 tonight at Park Lawn Funeral home. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to Special Neighbors.

LUVENA M. "BUNNY" EASTON

Luvena Mable "Bunny" Easton, 74, Independence, died Wednesday, Feb. 18, 1998, at the Independence Regional Health Center.

Mrs. Easton was born May 26, 1923, in Independence. She had worked at the HyVee grocery store on 23rd Street, and was a member of the Baptist faith.

Her survivors include a daughter, Beverly Ann Mohart, Independence; two brothers, Fred DeHoff, LaCygne, Kan., and Robert DeHoff, Grain Valley; a sister, Leta Huntsucker Cornelius, Independence; two granddaughters; and one great-granddaughter.

Services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at New Salem Funeral Home. Burial will be in Mount Washington cemetery. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 tonight at the funeral home. The family suggests contributions to the American Lung Association.

WILLIAM E. FAIN

William Earl Fain, 84, Independence, died Wednesday, Feb. 18, 1998, at the Independence Regional Medical Center.

Mr. Fain was born Jan. 28, 1914, in Grain Valley and was a lifelong area resident. He retired as a self-employed painting contractor and owner of Earl Fain`s Bar in Independence. He was an Army Air Force veteran of World War II. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Linda E. Bedsaul in 1984.

His survivors include his wife, Nadyne E. Fain of the home; a son, James D. Fain, Independence; two daughters, Susan P. Bowman, Lee`s Summit, and Kathi N. Williams, Las Vegas, Nev.; a sister, Rowena Larwill, Modesto, Calif.; nine grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at George C. Carson & Sons Independence Chapel. Burial will be in Mound Grove cemetery. Friends may call from 9:30 a.m. until service time at the chapel.

ROSA L. HIMES

RosaLee Himes, 91, Lee`s Summit, formerly of Independence, died Thursday, Feb. 19, 1998, at the John Knox Village Care Center in Lee`s Summit.

Mrs. Himes was born Feb. 15, 1907, in Stilwell, Kan. She was a clerk for Blue Cross and Blue Shield from 1960 to 1973. She was a member of the Longview Christian Church, Heritage Club, Jolly Sixties Club and the Blue Cross "N" Shield Club. Her husband, Laurence R. Himes, died May 3, 1989.

Her survivors include a sister, Margaret Burnside; and nephews.

Services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at D.W. Newcomer`s Sons Noland Road Chapel. Burial will be in Floral Hills Memorial Gardens, Kansas City. Friends may call from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday at the chapel. The family suggests contributions to the church.

HURLEY W. MAHAN

Hurley Wayne Mahan, 64, Independence, died Wednesday, Feb. 18, 1998, at his home.

Mr. Mahan was born Aug. 3, 1933, in Lee`s Summit. He was a softball pitcher and also enjoyed horseshoes, bowling and darts. He was involved with Scouting and was a warrior in the Tribe of Mic-O-Say for many years. He served in the National Guard for 12 years.

His survivors include his children, Steven W. Mahan, Gladstone, Mo., Kathleen M. Mahan, Sioux Falls, S.D., Sheila A. Carr, Kansas City North, Hurley D. Mahan, Clinton, Mo., and Mark W. Mahan, Kansas City North; and brothers and sisters, J.H. Mahan, Belton, Stanley L. Mahan, Lee`s Summit, Wanetta Foley, Modesto, Calif., Naomi B. Cox, Independence, Frank S. Mahan, Greenwood, and Larry Mahan, Lee`s Summit.

Services will be 2 p.m. Monday at the Langsford Funeral Home, Lee`s Summit. Burial will be in Floral Hills East cemetery, Lee`s Summit. Friends may call from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday or from 1 to 2 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

ETHYL M. SHULL

Ethyl M. Shull, 80, Independence, died Wednesday, Feb. 18, 1998, at St. Luke`s Hospital.

Mrs. Shull was born March 31, 1917, in Leavenworth, Kan., and had lived in Independence for 30 years. She was a homemaker and a member of the Village Presbyterian Church.

Her survivors include her husband, George E. Shull of the home; a daughter, Pamela Rudell, Lee`s Summit; three brothers, Perry, Clyde and Pat; and two sisters, Loretta and Dorothy.

Services will be 1 p.m. Saturday at the George C. Carson & Sons Independence Chapel. Burial will be in Mount Washington cemetery. Friends may call from 6:30 to 8 tonight at the chapel.

CLYDE W. SWEEDEN JR.

Clyde William Sweeden Jr., 69, Pilot Grove, Mo., formerly of Independence, died Monday, Oct. 19, 1998, in Pilot Grove.

Mr. Sweeden was born Aug. 4, 1929, in Nashville, Ark., and grew up in Hot Springs, Ark. He retired in 1991 from Jack Bilt Lithograph, and was a member of GAIU 235. He was an Army veteran, and a member of American Legion Post 266, Pilot Grove. He was a 32nd degree Mason, and a member of Mount Washington Masonic Lodge, Ararat Shrine, and was past president of the Jackson County Shrine Club. He was a member of the Church of Christ.

His survivors include his former wife, Josephine Sweeden; three daughters, Susie Sweeden Peden, Kathie Sweeden Gatteney and Margie Sweeden Hurd; a son, Darrell A. Sweeden; his mother, Susie Sweeden; two sisters, Mary Jewell Cooper and Lois Jones; nine grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Services will be 1:30 p.m. Thursday at the George C. Carson & Sons Independence Chapel. Burial will be in Brooking cemetery, Raytown. Friends may begin calling at 6 tonight at the chapel, with a Masonic service at 8 p.m. The family suggests contributions to the Wings of Mercy Children's Transportation Fund, Ararat Shrine Temple, 5100 Ararat Drive, Kansas City, Mo. 64129.

ELLEN L. THARP

Ellen Louise Tharp, 50, Warrensburg, Mo., died Thursday, Nov. 5, 1998, at her home.

Mrs. Tharp was born May 19, 1948, in Wheeling, W.Va. She was a 1966 graduate of the Miami High School of Florida and entered Orange Memorial Hospital Nursing School. She had worked as a nurse for 10 years at St. Mary's Hospital of Blue Springs. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Warrensburg.

Her survivors include her husband, John Tharp of Warrensburg; two sons, Derick A. Tharp and Brad A. Tharp, both of Warrensburg; a daughter, Shawn L. Schmidli, Chilhowee, Mo.; a brother, Robert Edward Rogers, Plantation, Fla.; three sisters, Linda Owens, Hollywood, Fla., Nancy Weaver, Silver Springs, Fla., and Judy Towns, Youngstown, Fla.

Memorial services were Sunday at the First United Methodist Church of Warrensburg. Memorial contributions may be made to the United Methodist Church Youth. Arrangements were under the direction of the Sweeney-Phillips & Holdren Funeral Home, Warrensburg.

MILDRED V. VAN MEALE

Mildred V. Van Meale, 85, Independence, died Sunday, Nov. 8, 1998, at the Independence Health Care Center.

Mrs. Van Meale was born Jan. 25, 1913, in Independence and was a lifelong Independence resident. She was a nurse's aide for Resthaven Retirement Home for 10 years. Her husband, Maurice Van Meale, died in 1979.

Her survivors include five sons, Maurice Van Meale, Pacific Junction, Iowa, John Van Meale, Spring Hill, Mo., Ronald Van Meale and Rodney Van Meale, both of Independence, and Robert Van Meale, Blue Springs; eight daughters, Freda Murphy and Patrice Freedle, both of Blue Springs, Janet Miller and Mary Bellamy, both of Lee's Summit, Margaret Rush, Greenwood, Valerie Morton, Chicago, Ill., Sharon Woodcock, Porter, Texas, and Judy Spake, Rayville, Mo.; 21 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.

Graveside services will be 10 a.m. Thursday at Woodlawn cemetery. Friends may call from 7 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at D.W. Newcomer's Sons Noland Road Chapel.

FREDERICK G. JERNIGAN

Frederick G. Jernigan, 63, Blue Springs, died Wednesday, Nov. 10, 1999, at his home.

Mr. Jernigan was born March 23, 1936, in St. Louis. Following his retirement from sales, he was a bus driver for the Blue Springs School District, and was voted 'Driver of the Month' for March 1999. He served in the Marine Corps from 1952 to 1955, and was an avid fisherman.

His survivors include his wife, Joyce P. Jernigan of the home; two sons, Frederick Jernigan Jr., Bonham, Texas, and James Jernigan, Moline, Ill.; two daughters, Helen Daignault, Collieville, Tenn., and Ruth Morton, Fort Worth, Texas; a stepdaughter, Deborah Perkins, Del City, Okla.; one brother, Elbert Jernigan, Jacksonville, Fla.; 11 grandchildren; and six step great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Webb-Freer Funeral Home, Blue Springs. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

CHARLES R. BERRYHILL

Charles R. Berryhill, 85, Independence, died No.v 19, 1999, at the Medical Center of Independence.

Mr. Berryhill was born Nov. 21, 1913, in Oklahoma. He retired from Armco Steeel and was a member of Masonic Lodge No. 843.

He is survived by his daughter, Gnetta Byrd, Independence, stepdaughter Lois Inzer, Kansas City four grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Monday at the Shield Funeral Home, with burial in Floral Hills cemetery. Visitation will be from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
