MAYDAY CANINE

Mayday Presley Canine, 82, Independence, died Wednesday, Feb. 10, 1999, at the Independence Regional Health Center. Mrs. Canine was born in Oakland, Calif., and had lived in the Independence area since 1982. She and her husband, Lt. Col. Chester Canine, who preceded her in death 1981, had lived in various parts of the world while he served in the U.S. Army. Before she was married , she had worked for the state of California, and in recent years was a volunteer with the hospice program. She was also preceded in death by one daughter, Elizabeth Eileen Canine in 1952. Her survivors include one son, Calvin James Canine, Mexico, Mo.; one daughter, Laurye C. Wilcox, Topsham, Maine; one brother, Fred Presley, San Leandro, Calif.; and six grandchildren, Jennifer, James, Robert, Kevin, Elizabeth and Jessica. Memorial services will be 2 p.m. Saturday at the RLDS Stone Church. Inurnment will be in Arlington National cemetery at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the RLDS Stone Church, 1012 Lexington Ave., Independence, Mo 64050. Arrangements are under the direction of the Speaks Suburban Chapel.

LARRY E. DOWSE

Larry Eugene Dowse, 51, Independence, died Saturday, March 13, 1999, at his home. Mr. Dowse was born in Boulder, Colo., and had lived in the Independence area for the past 15 years. He was a machinist with the Bendix Corp. for three years, and was a member of the Machinist Union. He was a Navy veteran of the Vietnam War, and a member of Trinity Church of the Nazarene. His survivors include his wife, Sharon Dowse of the home; three sons, Luke Dowse and Bruce Dowse, both of Independence, and Larry Dowse Jr., Overland Park, Kan.; one daughter, Katherine Puritan, Overland Park; his mother, June I. Dowse, Independence; three brothers, Garry Dowse, Quebec, Canada, Samuel Brooks, Grain Valley, and Daryl Brooks, Excelsior Springs, Mo.; two sisters, Judith Halvorsen, Independence, and Donna Hoeft, Oregon; and two grandchildren, Matthew John Dowse and Monica Puritan. Graveside services will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Leavenworth National cemetery. Friends may call from 7 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Speaks Suburban Chapel.

INA L. AUCUTT

Ina Louise Aucutt, 73, Oak Grove, died Monday, March 22, 1999, at her home.

Mrs. Aucutt was born April 6, 1925, in Jefferson City. She had been a waitress for the Westend Hotel and, at one time, was president of the Del Woods Fan Club. She was of the Baptist faith.

Her survivors include her husband, Garland Aucutt of the home; two sisters, Regenia Stoop, Springfield, Mo., and Virginia Kretzschmer, Kansas City; a stepson, Linn Aucutt, Grandview; two granddaughters, Cherie Wood, Independence, and Shelley Tomlinson, Kansas City; two great-grandchildren, Michael and Carla Arnone; and several nieces and nephews.

Services will be 10 a.m. Thursday at the Royer Funeral Home, Oak Grove. Graveside services will be 3 p.m. Thursday at the Dooley cemetery, Eldon, Mo. Friends may call from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

KATHRYN S. CLEVELAND

Kathryn Sinclair Hornung Cleveland, 76, Independence, died Tuesday, Dec. 1, 1998, at her home.

Mrs. Cleveland was born in New Castle, Pa., and had lived in the Independence area since 1959. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Independence, where she had taught Sunday school for many years.

Her survivors include her husband, John A. Cleveland of the home; a daughter, Beverly K. Cleveland, Cincinnati, Ohio; a brother, Martin R. Hornung, Eureka Springs, Ark.; a niece and a nephew.

Memorial services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at the Speaks Midtown Chapel. The family suggests contributions to a charity of your choice.

MATTHEW C. HERFORDT

Matthew C. Herfordt, 39, Independence, died Saturday, Nov. 28, 1998, at North Kansas City Hospital.

Mr. Herfordt was born Jan. 6, 1959, in Kansas City. He earned an associate's degree from Longview Community College and a bachelor's degree from the University of Missouri-Kansas City. He had been a stocker for United Super.

His survivors include his brother, James Herfordt, Lake Lotawana; and a sister, Melissa Herfordt-Blakely, Warrensburg, Mo.

Cremation. Arrangements are under the direction of Sheil Colonial Chapel.

MARY A. CONKLIN

Mary Alice Conklin, 73, Newton, Iowa, died Monday, Dec. 21, 1998, at her home.

Mrs. Conklin was born March 28, 1925, in Fairfield, Iowa, and had lived in Runnells, Sandyville and Swan in Iowa. She was a homemaker, and had worked for Vernon County Mattingly Music, Van's Health Food Store, and the Newton School District. She was a graduate of Runnells High School and a member of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. She was preceded in death by her husband, William Warren Conklin Sr.

Her survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, Bill W. Conklin Jr. and Stephanie Clement, Newton, and Dale D. and Kim Conklin, Storm Lake, Iowa; one daughter and son-in-law, Mary Anne and Barry Boren, Independence; one brother, Arthur Meader, Phoenix, Ariz.; three sisters, Gladys Ohnemus, Newton, Dorothy Miller, Independence, and Nadine Losee, New Virginia, Iowa; 12 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Wallace-Pence Funeral Home, Newton. Burial will be in Newton Union cemetery. Friends may call from 6 to 8 tonight at the funeral home. The family suggests contributions to the Hospice of Jasper County.

FRANCES L. WILKINSON

Frances Louise Wilkinson, 74, Oak Grove, died Sunday, Dec. 20, 1998, at Park Lane Medical Center in Kansas City.

Mrs. Wilkinson was born April 14, 1924, in Grain Valley and had lived in Oak Grove for the past 55 years. She worked for the Lake City Army Ammunition Plant for 40 years, retiring in 1989. She was preceded in death by her husband, Buddy Wilkinson in 1994, and a daughter-in-law, Janice Wilkinson in 1995.

Her survivors include one son, Larry E. Wilkinson, Bates City; two sisters, Elva Wakeman and Berniece Smith, both of Odessa; two brothers, Don Halsey, Oak Grove, and Joe Halsey, Odessa; grandchildren, Larry E. Wilkinson Jr. and Jill Wilkinson, and Joseph M. and Debra Wilkinson; and three great-grandchildren, Austin, Katlyn and Andrew.

Services will be 11 a.m. Thursday at the Royer Funeral Home, Oak Grove. Burial will be in Shore cemetery, south of Bates City. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the chapel. The family suggests contributions to Oak Grove Boy Scout Troop 266.

BILLY B. WILLIS

Billy Bob Willis, 67, Independence, died Sunday, Dec. 20, 1998, in Osawatomie, Kan.

Mr. Willis was born Jan. 26, 1931, in Manchester, Tenn., and moved to Independence in 1967. He was a combine design engineer and manager for Allis Chalmers for more than 30 years, and was currently a code enforcement officer for Jackson County. He was a 1949 graduate of Central High School, Manchester, and received a bachelor's degree in engineering from the University of Tennessee. He served the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War, and was stationed at Cape Canaveral. He was an avid farmer and hunter, ane owned the B bar W, a cattle ranch in Osawatomie, for 20 years. He was a member of the Church of Christ, and had been an active member of the Jaycee's.

His survivors include four children, Cathy Towles, Atlanta, Cynthia Taylor, Nashville, Tenn., Connie Cooper, Memphis, Tenn., and Michael Willis, San Francisco; two stepdaughters, Denise Shockley, Chicago, and Shauna Snyder, Germany; one sister, Mary Grace Mooney, Overland Park, Kan.; seven grandchildren; and two step grandchildren.

Services will be 1 p.m. Wednesday at the Speaks Suburban Chapel. Burial will be in Floral Hills East cemetery. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 tonight at the chapel. The family suggests contributions to the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation International, 6701 W. 64th St., Shawnee Mission, Kan. 66202.

Ruth M. Barron

Ruth M. Ramer Barron, 94, Independence, died Saturday, Feb. 5, 2000, at the Hidden Lake Care Center in Raytown.

Mrs. Barron was born Sept. 5, 1905, in Burwell, Neb., and had lived in Independence for more than 50 years. She was a homemaker, and a member of the First Christian Church of Independence, the Order of Eastern Star, and the P.E.O. Chapter of Lincoln, Neb. Her husband, Norman Barron, died n 1982.

Her survivors include one son, Gary L. Ramer, Independence; three daughters, Nina B. Oliver, Lompoc, Calif., and Patsy Webster and Phyllis Hartikka, both of Voluntown, Conn.; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at D.W. Newcomer's Sons Noland Road Chapel. Burial will be in Mount Washington cemetery. The family suggests contributions to Mid West Evangelism, 409 S.E. Nathan Pass, Lee's Summit.

Luella E. Castle

Luella E. Castle, 95, Lee's Summit, formerly of Independence, died Friday, Feb. 4, 2000, at the Jefferson Care Center in Lee's Summit.

Mrs. Castle was born June 21, 1904, in Scammon, Kan., and lived in Kansas City before moving to Independence in 1923. She retired from the Unity School of Christianity after 20 years of service. She was a charter member of Rockwood Baptist Church. She married Lemuel A. Castle in 1919, who preceded her in death in 1957.

Her survivors include three sons, Lawrence C. Castle, Lone Jack, Eugene L. Castle, Fort Worth, Texas, and David R. Castle, Lee's Summit; one daughter, Virginia Castle May, Humansville, Mo.; one sister, Martha Dauberg, Morgan Hill, Calif.; two brothers, Loren Atkinson, Redlands, Calif., and Edgar Atkinson, Whiting, Ind.; 14 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at the church. Burial will be in Mount Washington cemetery. Friends may call from 10 to 11 a.m. Tuesday at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of the George C. Carson & Sons Independence Chapel.

Lloyd V. Cross

Lloyd V. Cross, 94, Lee's Summit, died Saturday, Feb. 5, 2000, at Lee's Summit Hospital.

Mr. Cross was born April 15, 1905, in Beaver Crossing, Neb. He was a 1922 graduate of Beaver Crossing High School, and attended the Universities of Nebraska and Michigan. He taught for a number of years in both the junior and senior high schools in Norfolk, Neb. In 1941, he moved to Fremont, Neb., where he worked in a defense plant during World War II, before moving to Kansas City, where he worked for the Vendo Co. He started his own business, Metropolitan Employment Service, which he ran until his retirement. He was a member of the official board at the Country Club Christian Church before moving to Mesa, Ariz., where he became an associate member of the Glass and Garden Community Church. He was preceded in death by a son, Dave L. Cross in 1993.

His survivors include his wife, Geraldine Cross of the home; a daughter-in-law, Marjorie E. Cross, Lee's Summit; four grandsons, David A. Cross, Gary L. Cross and Jeffrey M. Cross, all of Lee's Summit, and Gale V. Cross, Newburgh, Ind.; and 12 great-grandchildren.

Services will be 1 p.m. Tuesday at the Country Club Christian Church. Burial will be in Corinth cemetery. Friends may call from noon to 1 p.m. Tuesday at the church. The family suggests contributions to the church. Arrangements are under the direction of the Speaks Memorial Chapel Inc.

William E. Duffer

William Elmo Duffer, 72, Independence, died Saturday, Feb. 5, 2000, at St. Mary's Hospital of Blue Springs.

Mr. Duffer was born April 1, 1927, in Proctor, Mo. He had worked for Berkley Farms Dairy in Emeryville, Calif. He was a member of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, and a past master of the Masonic Lodge.

His survivors include his wife, Lorene Duffer of the home; one son, Gary William Duffer, Independence; three sisters, Carol Duffer, Portland, Ore., Kathleen Epple, Blue Springs, and Emma Jean Thompson, Warrensburg, Mo.; three brothers, Dan Duffer, Denver, Don Duffer, Knob Noster, Mo., and Russell Duffer, Blue Springs; and two granddaughters, Katherine Marie Duffer and Lisa Marie Duffer, both of Independence.

Services will be 1 p.m. Wednesday at the Webb-Freer Funeral Home, Blue Springs. Burial will be in Knob Noster cemetery. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. The family suggests contributions to the Memorial Garden in honor of Mr. Duffer.

Beryl L. Hatcher

Beryl L. Hatcher, 82, Excelsior Springs, Mo., formerly of Independence, died Friday, Feb. 4, 2000, at the Valley Manor Rest Home.

Mrs. Hatcher was born Jan. 30, 1918, in Missouri Valley, Iowa. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jesse Hatcher in 1969.

Her survivors include two sons, Alvin L. Hatcher, Odessa, and Dennis D. Hatcher, Independence; two daughters, Viola M. Sweeney, Independence, and Betty L. Wilkinson, Crystal Lakes, Mo.; four brothers, Clifford Hiles, Willis Hiles and Dwight Hiles, all of Missouri Valley, and Johnny Hiles, Huntington Beach, Calif.; four sisters, Leta Hiles, Omaha, Neb., Garland Hiles, Missouri Valley, Lola Hatcher, Crescent, Iowa, and Rosalie Hart, North Carolina; 17 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; and nine great-great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the George C. Carson & Sons Independence Chapel; cremation. Friends may call from 6 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at the chapel.

Bessie M. Morgan

Bessie M. Morgan, 99, Harrisonville, Mo., formerly of Independence, died Friday, Feb. 4, 2000, at the Cass Medical Center.

Mrs. Morgan was born July 3, 1900, in Little Sioux, Iowa, and lived in Independence most of her life, moving to Harrisonville five years ago. She was a member of the Englewood Live and Learn Club and the RLDS Stone Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph E. Morgan, and her children, Jane Rahn, and Joseph E. and John Morgan.

Her survivors include eight grandchildren, Jan Edwards, Judy, Joe, John and Jim Morgan, Jane Waugh, and Ken and Sherry Rahn; 20 great-grandchildren; and 12 great-great-grandchildren.

Services were today at the Speaks Midtown Chapel. Burial was in Mound Grove cemetery. The family suggests contributions to the American Council of the Blind.

Owen D. Scott

Owen Dale Scott, 75, Odessa, died Saturday, Feb. 5, 2000, at St. Mary's Hospital of Blue Springs.

Mr. Scott was born March 11, 1924, in Odessa. He married Mary Juanita Whitworth on Feb. 23, 1946. He worked for the Bendix-Allied Signal Corp. in Kansas City from 1949 until retiring in 1986. He had been a supervisor and inspector. He was an Army veteran of World War II. He was a member of the First Baptist Church, serving on many committees and as an adult Sunday school teacher for more than 25 years. He was a member of Odessa Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5675 and Masonic Lodge 476, Odessa, and a former member of the Lions Club. He was a charter member of the Odessa Quarterback Club, having served as president. He served on the Odessa City Council as alderman, and on several committees for the city of Odessa.

His survivors include his wife, Mary Juanita Scott of the home; two sons, Gary D. Scott, Odessa, and Terry L. Scott and wife, Chris, Fort Worth, Texas; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and one sister, Bette Bartles, Mayview, Mo.

Services were today at the church. Burial was in Green cemetery, Odessa.

Timothy M. Dujakovich

Timothy Michael Dujakovich, 41, Independence, died Thursday, Feb. 10, 2000, at his home.

Mr. Dujakovich was born Sept. 30, 1958, in Kansas City, and was a lifelong area resident. He was a machine operator for Smurfit Stone Co. for more than 20 years. He was of the Catholic faith.

His survivors include his wife of 16 years, Brenda Dujakovich, and two sons, Joshua Dujakovich and Timmy Dujakovich, all of the home; his parents, Theodore and Mary Dujakovich, Kansas City; three brothers, Theodore Dujakovich III, Kansas City, Tom Dujakovich, Merriam, Kan., and Andy Dujakovich, Overland Park, Kan.; four sisters, Lauretta Coit, Roeland Park, Kan., Teresa Bryon, Shawnee, Kan., Phyllis Prouty, Raymore, Mo., and Sue Rutherford, Kansas City; and several in-laws, aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Services will be 10 a.m. Monday at St. Joseph the Worker Catholic Church, Burial will be in Oak Ridge Memory Gardens. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Sunday at the Speaks Suburban Chapel, where a Rosary will be said at 7:30 p.m.

VELDA CRUMMETT

Velda Crummett, 78, Kansas City, died Saturday, Feb. 13, 1999, at Cedar Valley Care Center.

Mrs. Crummett was born May 2, 1920, in Almena, Kan., and had lived in the Kansas City area for 19 years. She was a waitress for many years before retiring.

Her survivors include her daughter, Wilma I. Hall, Independence; her mother, Grace Reed, LaPorte, Ind.; four sisters, Neva June Standefer, LaPorte, Ila Tota, Rochester, N.Y., Loleta Branco, Woodside, N.Y., and Freda Grant, Casper Valley, Calif.; five grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.

Services will be 1 p.m. Wednesday at Park Lawn Chapel. Burial will be in Memorial Park cemetery, Kansas City. Friends may call from 6 to 8 tonight at the chapel.
