RAYMOND F. RINER

Raymond Floyd Riner, 78, Buckner, died Tuesday, May 5, 1998, at St. Mary`s Hospital of Blue Springs.

Mr. Riner was born May 7, 1919, in Napoleon, Mo., and had lived in the state of Missouri since 1919 and in Jackson County since 1960 and in Buckner for the past five years. He farmed in Lafayette County until 1960. He served as foreman for Jackson County Public Works for 25 years. He had been a member of Antique Tractor Club since 1986. He was a Baptist.

His survivors include his wife, Helen Riner of the home; four daughters, Donna Roach, Lee`s Summit, Bonnie Brady, Wellington, Mo., Beverly Wilson, Independence, and Yvonna Stapleton, Buckner; six sons, Floyd Riner, Lee Riner, and Brian Riner, all of Buckner, and Charles Riner, Grain Valley, Sam Ellis, Kansas City, and Dan Ellis, Independence; two sisters, Elsie Husted and Charlene Kraemer, both of Buckner, 38 grandchildren; and 36 great-grandchildren.

Services will be 11 a.m. Friday at the Brown Funeral Home, 300 Adams, Buckner. Burial will be in Buckner Hill cemetery. Friends may call from 6:30 to 8:30 tonight at the funeral home. The family suggests contributions to the Children`s Mercy Hospital.

HARRY E. SHEPARD

Harry E. Shepard, 72, Lee`s Summit, died Wednesday, May 6, 1998, at his home.

Mr. Shepard was born Oct. 4, 1925, in Excelsior Springs, Mo. He was a member of the American Legion Post 499, Blue Springs. He was an Army veteran and retired as Sgt. 1st Class after 21 years of service. He was member of the Pipe Fitters Union and retired as a pipe fitter from AT&T.

His survivors include three daughters and two sons-in-law, Robin and Paul Furney, Kansas City, Sharon Game, Kingsville, Mo., and Jean Shepard and Don Mayberry, Olathe, Kan.; two sisters, Sarah K. Crenshaw, Blue Springs, and Frances Neely, Independence; two brothers, Robert Shepard, Kansas City, and William Shepard, Tampa Bay, Fla.; and six grandchildren, Joshua Furney, Kansas City, Brianna Game, Kingsville, Brandi Shepard, North Kansas City, Angie Stadnick, Lee`s Summit, Bridget Shepard, Olathe, and Samantha Smith, Kansas City.

Graveside services will be 9:30 a.m. Friday at Swan Lake Memorial Gardens. The family suggests contributions to the World War II Memorial Fund.

THELMA McCAIN

Thelma McCain, 87, Independence, died Thursday, July 2, 1998, at her home.

Mrs. McCain was born Nov. 7, 1900, on a farm west of Bates City, Mo. She attended the one-room Webb School and then Odessa High School. She graduated from Oak Grove High School. She also graduated from Kansas City Business College. She worked in advertising at the Kansas City Journal Post. She also worked at Sears Roebuck and Co. in the business office in Kansas City. After retirement, she helped operate a daily farm at Blue Springs for several years. She was preceded in death by her second husband, James Henry McCain, and a great-grandson, John Ryan Ferguson.

Her survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, June and John Thomas Ferguson, Independence; her grandson, John Stephen Ferguson; and great-grandchildren, Dawn Ann and John Scott Ferguson.

Services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at the George C. Carson & Sons Independence Chapel. Burial will be in Salem cemetery, Independence. Friends may call from 6:30 to 8 tonight at the chapel. The family suggests memorial contributions to the First Christian Church of Independence.

JOHN C. TAYLOR

John Cooke Taylor, 65, Waukee, Iowa, formerly of Blue Springs, died Friday, July 3, 1998, at the Medical Center of Independence.

Mr. Taylor was born March 31, 1933, in Kansas City, and had lived in Blue Springs before moving to Waukee six years ago. He was a 1957 graduate of Park College. He had been an employee of Vendo Co. and Fawn Engineering. He retired in 1996 from the federal government. He was an Army veteran.

His survivors include his wife, Marilyn Taylor of the home; a son, Bradley Taylor, St. Louis, Mo.; two daughters, Laurie Kofmehl, Storm Lake, Iowa, and Christine Taylor, Oskaloosa, Iowa; a sister, Johanna Kroencke, Lee`s Summit; and three grandchildren.

Graveside services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at Buckner Hill cemetery. Memorial services will be 7 p.m. Thursday at Waukee United Methodist Church, Ashworth Road, Waukee, Iowa 50263. The family suggests contributions to the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Brown Funeral Home, Buckner.

CHARLES A. THALLER

Charles A. Thaller, 85, Higginsville, Mo., died Saturday, July 4, 1998, at the Meyer Care Center, Higginsville.

Mr. Thaller was born Oct. 10, 1912, in Higginsville, and was a lifetime Higginsville resident. He was former/operator of Thaller Electric. He was a member of Saint Mary`s Catholic Church, Boy Scouts of America, Chamber of Commerce and Boy Scouts Mic-O-Say Tribe. He was honorary fire chief of Higginsville and was fire chief for numerous years and had also served as ambulance chief. He was preceded in death by his wife, Gertrude Thaller on June 23, 1992.

His survivors include three sons, Arthur B. Thaller and David H. Thaller, both of Higginsville, and Louis C. Thaller, Littlerock, Calif.; a daughter, Mary Anna Arth, Blue Springs; 14 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Funeral mass will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Saint Mary`s Catholic Church. Burial will be in Salem Church cemetery. Friends may call after 7 tonight at the Wiegers Funeral Home, Higginsville, where the rosary will be said at 7:30 p.m.

MATTIE PORTER

Mattie Porter, 93, Mesa, Ariz., formerly of Blue Springs, died Monday, Dec. 7, 1998, at the Desert Samaritan Care Center, Mesa.

Mrs. Porter was born April 13, 1905, in Blue Springs. She was a homemaker. She was a ladies aide at the Cumberland Presbyterian Church.

Her survivors include a daughter, Bonnie Hamlin, Mesa; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at the Webb-Freer Funeral Home. Burial will be in Lobb cemetery. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

ALESIA D. CARDER

Alesia Dawn Carder, 14, Oak Grove, died Wednesday, July 15, 1998, at St. Mary`s Hospital of Blue Springs.

Alesia was born April 4, 1984, in Independence. She was a freshman at Oak Grove High School. She was a member of the Freshman Cheerleading Squad, the volleyball team, the Science Olympiad and was manager of the girl`s basketball team. Alesia also served as a volunteer at the Medical Center of Independence.

Her survivors include her parents, Gregg and Marsha Carder of the home; a sister, Kristie Carder of the home; her maternal grandmother, Violet Davin, Pomona, Kan.; nine aunts; 10 uncles and several cousins.

Services will be 1:30 p.m. Sunday at the First Baptist Church of Oak Grove. Burial will be in Oak Grove cemetery. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday at the Royer Funeral Home, Oak Grove. The family suggests contributions to Children`s Mercy Hospital Cardiac Center.

HENRY HAIN

Henry Hain, 87, Independence, died Thursday, July 9, 1998, at St. Luke`s Hospital in Kansas City.

Mr. Hain was born Aug. 18, 1911, in Tennessee, and had lived in this area for 50 years. He worked for the Ford Motor Corp., retiring after 44 years of service. He was involved in the Eagles, was a Boy Scout leader for Troop 456 for 13 years, and was a member of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. His wife, Cecilia Hain, died in 1993.

His survivors include four sons, Rick Hain, Charlotte, N.C., Mike Hain, Houston, Steven Hain, Norman, Okla., and Ron Hain, Denver; one daughter, Virginia Hain, Etowah, Tenn.; and 10 grandchildren.

Graveside services were today at Mount Washington cemetery.

DONALD E. JOHNSON

Donald E. Johnson, 65, Edwards, Mo., formerly of Independence, died Wednesday, July 15, 1998, at the Boone County Hospital in Columbia, Mo.

Mr. Johnson was born Aug. 27, 1932, in Independence, and moved to the Cable Ridge community of Edwards in 1971. He graduated from Blue Springs High School, received a bachelor`s degree from Ottawa (Kan.) University, and a master`s degree in education from Central Missouri State University, Warrensburg. He had taught school in several locations in Missouri and was currently the director of guidance at the Climax Springs (Mo.) R-4 School District.

His survivors include his wife, Margot DeAnn Rodgers Johnson of the home; two sons, Donald A. Johnson, Independence, and Duane A. Johnson, Kansas City; two daughters, Cynthia Tong, Louisiana, and Margot J. Welch, Grain Valley; his mother, Mildred Johnson, Warsaw, Mo.; one brother, Duane Johnson, Edwards; and six grandchildren.

Services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at the Reser Funeral Home, Warsaw. Burial will be in Cable Ridge cemetery, Edwards. Friends may call from 7 to 8 tonight at the funeral home. The family suggests contributions to the Donald E. Johnson memorial fund, in care of the funeral home.

VENICE M. LILLER

Venice Mable Liller, 84, Meadville, Mo., died Thursday, July 16, 1998, at the Hedrick Medical Center, Chillicothe.

Mrs. Liller was born Oct. 3, 1913, in Hercer County, Mo. She was a store clerk for J.C. Penney in Chillicothe for 36 years. She was a member of the Coon United Methodist Church, Princeton, Mo. She was preceded in death by her husband, Eugene Liller.

Her survivors include a daughter, Barbara Devaul, Meadville; two granddaughters, Kimberly Smoot and Tamara Alexander; three great-grandchildren, Zachary Jacobs, Johnna Alexander and Bobby Smoot.

Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Sunday at the Lindley Funeral Home, Chillicothe. Burial will be in the Smith cemetery, Rhodes, Mo. There is no scheduled family visitation but friends may call from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday or from 9:30 a.m. until service time on Sunday. Memorial contributions may be made to the Smith cemetery, in care of the Lindley Funeral Home, P.O. Box 47, Chillicothe, Mo. 64601.

DR. BILLY MILLER JR.

Dr. Billy Miller Jr., 57, Oak Grove, died Thursday, July 16, 1998, at his home.

Dr. Miller was born June 23, 1941, in Sherman, Texas. He was a member and past area coordinator of the U.S. Army`s Military Affiliate Radio System. He earned his graduate degree at Central Missouri State University, Warrensburg. He earned his doctorate in special education and psychology from the University of Texas. He previously had taught at Central High School.

His survivors include his wife, Marilyn J. Miller of the home; a son and daughter-in-law, Richard and Sarah Miller, a daughter, Terrie Sue Miller, and a granddaughter, Elizabeth Rose Miller, all of Independence.

No services. Interment will be in Longview Memorial Gardens. The family suggests contributions to Children`s Mercy Hospital or to Special Olympics. Arrangements are under the direction of the D.W. Newcomer`s Sons Longview Funeral Home.

CARL M. PAUL

Carl M. Paul, 68, Independence, died Wednesday, July 15, 1998, at Independence Regional Health Center.

Mr. Paul was born June 24, 1930, in Independence, and was a lifelong area resident. He managed truck stops in the metropolitan area for several years and after his retirement worked at his son`s business, G.P.`s Pool and Game Center. He was a member of the Slover Park RLDS congregation.

His survivors include his wife, Martha Paul of the home; two sons, Gary Paul, two daughters, Debbie Montavy and Carla Paul, one stepdaughter, Nikki Peterson, one sister, Joan Paul Bland, and one grandson, Shaun "Milo" Montavy, all of Independence.

Services will be 2 p.m. Saturday at the George C. Carson & Sons Independence Chapel; cremation. Friends may call from 1 to 2 p.m. Saturday at the chapel. The family suggests contributions to the American Lung Association.

CHARLES W. "CHUCK" STAMPER

Charles W. "Chuck" Stamper, 69, Overland Park, Kan., died Wednesday, July 15, 1998, at his home.

Mr. Stamper was born March 14, 1929, in Kansas City, and was a lifelong area resident. He worked for Armco Steel before going to work for the Schaffer Grinding Co., retiring in 1994. He was a Marine Corps veteran of World War II, and was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus, Holy Name Society, Independence Jaycees, and the American Federation of Square Dancers. His first wife, Norma Lee Stamper, died in 1988.

His survivors include his wife, Gail Stamper of the home; one son, Tim Stamper, Bentonville, Ark.; three daughters, Debra Harris, Merriam, Kan., Barbra Hunter, Blue Springs, and Lisa Burlile, Independence; one stepson, Jeff Haas, Overland Park; one brother, Marion Stamper, Independence; 10 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at the George C. Carson & Sons Blue Ridge Chapel. Burial will be in Mount Washington cemetery. Friends may call from 6:30 to 8:30 tonight at the chapel, where the rosary will be said at 6:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the American Heart Association or the Kidney Foundation.

DORA E. MALLINSON

Dora Ellen Mallinson, 85, Sugar Creek, died Tuesday, May 12, 1998, at the Medical Center of Independence.

Mrs. Mallinson was born Nov. 3, 1912, in Palestine, Texas, and had lived in this area most of her life. She was a homemaker. Her husband, Robert L. Mallinson, died in 1997.

Her survivors include three sons, J.W. Mallinson, Grain Valley, Robert L. Mallinson Jr., Sugar Creek, and Bradley Mallinson, Lexington, Mo.; two daughters, Roberta Masters and Edna Claibourn, and two sisters, Myrtle Ballinger and Vivian Sanders, all of Independence; 10 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.

Services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at the George C. Carson & Sons Independence Chapel. Burial will be in Mound Grove cemetery, Independence. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Friday at the chapel. The family suggests contributions to the Salvation Army.

MARJORIE Z. MESLE

Marjorie Z. Mesle, 79, Blue Springs, died Tuesday, May 12, 1998, at the Rosewood Health Care Center.

Mrs. Mesle was born Feb. 12, 1919, in Fergus Falls, Minn. She was a graduate of Graceland College and the Independence Sanitarium School of Nursing, and practiced as a registered nurse until retiring in 1983. She was a member of the Professional Nurses Association. She was a volunteer for the American Red Cross, and was a member of the RLDS Colonial Hills congregation.

Her survivors include her husband, Richard L. Mesle, Blue Springs; a son, Reed Oltvedt, Kansas City; two daughters, Carol Carter, Blue Springs, and Shauna Holmes, Washington, D.C.; a stepson, Gregory Oltvedt, Minnetonka, Minn.; two stepdaughters, Marion Scharoun, Farmington, Maine, and Ann Margaret Trefethan, Chesterville, Maine; eight grandchildren, Jeremy and Christopher Holmes, Sarah and Maren Oltvedt, and Hallie, John, Evan and Naomi Carter; and six step grandchildren.

Memorial services will be 3:30 p.m. Saturday at the Speaks Suburban Chapel, Independence; cremation. The family suggests contributions to the RLDS Temple Endowment Fund.

ROBERT C. PRATT SR.

Robert C. Pratt Sr., 75, Grain Valley, died Wednesday, May 13, 1998, at his home.

Mr. Pratt was born Nov. 16, 1922, in Hopewell, Mo., and had lived in Grain Valley since 1977. He was a superintendent of maintenance for the Missouri Pacific Railroad for 45 years, retiring in 1985. He was an Army veteran of World War II, and a Catholic. His wife, Gloria Smith Pratt, died in 1987.

His survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Robert C. Pratt Jr. and Beth Pratt, Grain Valley; two daughters, Robinne Pratt, Houston, and Beverly Hillard, Monroe City, Mo.; five brothers, Earl Pratt, Chester, Ill., Clifford Pratt, Centralia, Ill., Roy Pratt and Edward Pratt, both of Irondale, Mo., and Elmer Pratt, Bismarck, Mo.; three sisters, Loretta Janison, Parkhills, Mo., Trease Knox, Dupo, Ill., and Helen Eichenberger, Irondale; and two grandchildren, Michael C. Pratt, Grain Valley, and Christine Cottner, St. Louis.

Services will be 11 a.m. Monday at the Royer Funeral Home, Grain Valley. Burial will be in Valley Memorial Gardens, Grain Valley. Friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at the chapel.
