JOHN J. SALVA

John J. Salva, 90, Sugar Creek, died Monday, Nov. 16, 1998, at his home.

Mr. Salva was born Jan. 16, 1908, in Ilasco, Mo. His parents were from the Dobronya Slovak Republic. He retired as a general foreman for the Amoco Oil Co. after 45 years of service, and was a member of the Amoco Retirees. He was also a member of St. Cyril's Catholic Church, the First Catholic Slovak Union and the American Radio Relay League. His wife, Helen Salva, died in 1970.

His survivors include five sons, Stan J. Salva, Robert E. Salva, Vincent P. Salva and Gary P. Salva, all of Sugar Creek, and Dr. David M. Salva, Independence; one sister, Helen Bass, and one brother, Andy Stanko, both of Independence; nine grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Mass will be held 10 a.m. Thursday at the church. Burial will be in Mount Olivet cemetery, Raytown. Friends may call from 6:30 to 8:30 tonight at the George C. Carson & Sons Independence Chapel, where a rosary will be held at 8 p.m. The family suggests contributions to the CCRC in Sugar Creek.

ETHEL L. YOCUM

Ethel L. Yocum, 92, Independence, died Monday, Nov. 16, 1998, at Independence Regional Health Center.

Mrs. Yocum was born May 19, 1906, in Kansas City and was a lifelong area resident. She had lived in Independence since 1954. She was a homemaker and a Methodist. Her husband, Bert Yocum, died in 1976.

Her survivors include a daughter, Susan Roark, Independence; and a niece, Rosa Lee Johnson, Kansas City.

Graveside services will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Woodlawn cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of the George C. Carson & Sons Independence Chapel.

ROBERT SWINNEY

Robert Swinney, 60, Blue Springs, formally of Nebraska City, Neb., died Friday, Oct. 1, 1999, at home.

Mr. Swinney was born July 24, 1939, in Nebraska City. He was a warehouse manager for Lipton Tea Company after retiring in 1993. He was also a member of Elks Lodge 1049 in Nebraska City.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Swinney, of the home; daughter, Tamara Redford of Grain Valley; three brothers, Eldon Swinney of Auburn, Neb., Meritt Swinney of Sumpter, S.C., and Sterling Swinney of Corpus Christi, Texas; two grandchildren, Chace Robert and Kristen Alicia Bryan.

Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at Floral Hills East cemetery. Visitation will be between 6 and 8 p.m. Monday at Web-Freer Funeral home.

WARREN A. KINCAID

Warren Albert Kincaid, 54, Kansas City, died Monday, Jan. 4, 1999, at his home.

Mr. Kincaid was born Feb. 21, 1944, and lived on a farm near Milford, Mo., before moving to the Kansas City area. He attended Round Prairie Elementary School and Lamar (Mo.) High School, and was a Navy veteran, serving on the aircraft carrier USS Constellation. He was preceded in death by one son, Michael (Kincaid) Robinson.

His survivors include one daughter, Lisa Kincaid, Independence; two sisters, Elizabeth Waters, Belton, Mo., and Margaret Craig, Plant City, Fla.; five brothers, Robert Kincaid, Peculiar, Mo., Jerome Kincaid, Kansas City, Paul Kincaid, Chattanooga, Tenn., David Kincaid, Lee's Summit, and Charles Kincaid, Independence; 13 nieces; and eight nephews.

Services will be 11 a.m. Friday at the Charter Funeral Home, Kansas City. Burial will be in Brooking cemetery, Kansas City. Friends may call from 5:30 to 7:30 tonight at the funeral home.

FRANK HARDING

Frank Harding, Goodland, Kan., died Wednesday, March 26, 1997, in Goodland.

Mr. Harding was born July 23, 1905.

His survivors include his wife, Esther Harding, Goodland; three sons, Larry Harding, Buckner, Floyd Harding, Arlington, Texas, and Bruce Harding, Abilene, Kan.; two daughters, Carol Short, Longmont, Colo., and Cynthia Hayden, Whiterock, N.M.; 16 grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.

Services will be Saturday in Goodland. Arrangements are under the direction of Koons Funeral Home, Goodland.

EUNICE P. HEDGECOCK

Eunice Pearl Hedgecock, 93, Lee`s Summit, died Wednesday, March 26, 1997, at the ABC Nursing Home in Harrisonville.

Mrs. Hedgecock was born May 24, 1903, in Johnson County, Mo., near Warrensburg, and had lived in Warrensburg, Kansas City and Independence before moving to Lee`s Summit. She attended the Warrensburg Training School. She was a clerical worker for the Meyer Optical Co. in Kansas City for 20 years, retiring in 1967. She was a member of the Lee`s Summit Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles J. Hedgecock in 1972. Her survivors include two daughters, Anita Holman and Jean Gardner, both of Lee`s Summit; a sister, Helen Williams, Tyler, Texas; three granddaughters, Judith Shafe, Jacquelin Fowler and Joyce Walker; two grandsons, Larry Gardner and Robert Gardner; and 12 great-grandchildren.

Services will be 2 p.m. Saturday at the Speaks Suburban Chapel. Graveside services will be at 4 p.m. Saturday at the Sunset Hill cemetery, Warrensburg. Friends may call from 1 until 2 p.m. at the chapel. The family suggests contributions to the Lee`s Summit Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints Building Fund, P.O. Box 259, Independence, Mo. 64051.

BONNIE J. McCARTHY

Bonnie Jean McCarthy, 61, Independence, died Wednesday, March 26, 1997, at Columbia Independence Regional Health Center.

Mrs. McCarthy was a lifelong Independence resident. She was a member of St. Ann`s Parish. She was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Francis Gail McCarthy.

Her survivors include her husband, Joseph P. McCarthy of the home; a son, Joseph McCarthy, Ridgeway, Mo.; three daughters, Cynthia Spiva and Teresa McCarthy, both of Independence, and Valerie Taylor, Phoenix, Ariz.; two brothers, Carl Russum, Belton, and Gerald Russum, Independence;two sisters, Mary Lou Francis, Sugar Creek, and Loretta Shaw, Hurst, Texas; 11grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Services will be 10 a.m. Monday at St. Ann`s Catholic Church. Burial will be in Mount Olivet cemetery, Raytown. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the George C. Carson & Sons Independence Chapel, where a rosary will be at 7:30 p.m. The family suggests contributions to the Kidney Foundation.

PHILIP H. SIELER

Philip Henry Sieler, 33, Independence, died Wednesday, March 26, 1997, at the Medical Center of Independence.

Mr. Sieler was born Jan. 11, 1964, in Independence. He was a lifelong resident of Independence. He was a custodian for FabTech Inc., Lee`s Summit. He was a member of the Faith Baptist Church. He had been a Civil War re-enacter for six years.

His survivors include his mother, Carol Sieler of the home; his father, Burnell Sieler, Las Vegas, Nev.; two brothers, James B. Sieler, Las Vegas, and Gary W. Sieler of the home; and his grandparents, Billy and Wanda Price, Eldorado Springs, Mo.

Services will be 11 a.m. Monday at the D.W. Newcomer`s Sons Noland Road Chapel. Burial will be in Woodlawn cemetery. Friends may call from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday at the chapel.

DUNCAN TAYLOR

Duncan Taylor, 75, Independence, died Wednesday, March 26, 1997, at Desert Valley Care Center, Casa-Grande, Ariz.

Mr. Taylor was born in Newcastle, England, and had served in the British Army as a Sergeant Major for 26 years before coming to the United States. He was head custodian at William Chrisman High School until retirement. He was preceded in death by a son, David.

His survivors include his wife, Lorna Taylor of Arkansas; a son, Peter Taylor, Arkansas; a daughter, Sylvia Wright, Norfolk, England; a brother of New Zealand; a sister of Lawrence, Kan.; six grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

JAMES F. BRYANT

James F. Bryant, 79, Independence, died Tuesday, Feb. 18, 1997, at the Independence Health Care Center.

Mr. Bryant was born Jan. 21, 1918, in Kansas City, Kan., and was a lifelong area resident. He was a machinist for the Ford Motor Co. for 38 years, retiring in 1989, and a Navy veteran of World War II. He was preceded in death by a son, Craig E. Bryant in 1992.

His survivors include his wife, Laura M. Bryant of the home; five sons, James T. Bryant, Oakland, Calif., Stephen F. Bryant, Roger A. Bryant and Mark L. Bryant, all of Independence, and Dennis E. Bryant, Kansas City; three daughters, Donna L. Coffelt, Overland Park, Kan., Ellen G. Porter, Independence, and Lesley L. Peace, Lee`s Summit; a sister, Ruth Speigelhalter, Kansas City; 12 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Services will be 11a.m. Friday at Newcomer`s Noland Road Chapel. Burial will be in Mound Grove cemetery. Friends may call from 7 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the chapel. The family suggests contributions to your favorite charity.

CLIFFORD G. DECKARD

Clifford G. Deckard, 79, Springfield, Mo., formerly of Independence, died Monday, Feb. 17, 1997, at his home.

Mr. Deckard was born Jan. 10, 1918, in Jasper, Mo., and lived in Independence for 25 years and in Bolivar, Mo., before moving to Springfield 10.5 years ago. He was a member of Waldo Avenue Baptist Church and an Army veteran of World War II.

His survivors include his wife, Alice Deckard of the home; a son, Scott Deckard, Springfield; a daughter, Theresa Chavez, Blue Springs; two brothers, Eugene Deckard, Willard, Mo., and Don Deckard, Springfield; six sisters, Carrie Cole, Excelsior Springs, Mo., Lottie Ross and Lorene McClendon, both of Springfield, Dorothy Sullivan, Sierra Vista, Ariz., Leona Sisco, Ozark, Mo., and Bernice Nix, Independence; and three grandchildren, Chariety Chavez, Joshua Chavez and Zane Deckard.

Services will be 10 a.m. Friday at the Carson Independence Chapel. Burial will be in Oak Ridge Memory Gardens cemetery. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday at the chapel.

GEORGIA L. HATHHORN

Georgia Leona Hathhorn, 92, Independence, died Sunday, Feb. 16, 1997, at Research Medical Center.

Mrs. Hathhorn was born March 14, 1904, in Bay Minette, Ala. She was a member of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. She was preceded in death by her husband, Harley Hathhorn in 1974.

Her survivors include two daughters, Georgiana J. Kniffin, Wildwood, Mo., and Joyce A. Grotenhuis, Independence; a sister, Mae Weatherford, Bay Minette, Ala.; four grandchildren, Mark Kniffin, Chesterfield, Mo., Joy L. Graveline, Ames, Iowa, Ron E. Grotenhuis, Independence, and Jan A. Lewis, Overland Park, Kan.; eight great-grandchildren; and two step great-grandchildren.

Services will be 11 a.m. Friday at Newcomer`s Floral Hills Chapel, Kansas City. Burial will be in Floral Hills Memorial Gardens. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday at the chapel.

LAVETA M. MULLEN

Laveta M. Burdett Mullen, 85, Independence, died Monday, Feb. 17, 1997, at Columbia Independence Regional Health Center.

Mrs. Mullen was born July 24, 1911, in Fordland, Mo. She was preceded in death by her husband of 65 years, Patrick W. Mullen, and five children, Bessie, William, Edwin, James and Penny Ann.

Her survivors include six sons, Kenneth Mullen, Phoenix, Ariz., Lawrence Mullen of the home, Charles Mullen, Freeman, Mo., Michael Mullen, Reading, Pa., David Mullen, Cuba, Mo., and Rodney Mullen, Springfield, Mo.; four daughters, Patricia Spurlin, Reno, Nev., Mary Ziola, Palos Heights, Ill., Beverly Stuteville, Independence, and Donna Ishmael, Homer, Ark.; 33 grandchildren; 46 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Memorial services will at 3 today at Charter Funerals in Kansas City. Burial will be 2 p.m. Saturday at the St. James (Mo.) cemetery.

ROY L. SHELTON

Roy L. Shelton, 69, Grain Valley, died Monday, Feb.17, 1997, at his home. Mr. Shelton was born July 28, 1927, in Parthenon, Ark. He was a tool setter at the Lake City Army Ammunition Plant for 25 years, retiring in 1985. He was an Army veteran of World War II and a member of the First Baptist Church of Grain Valley. His survivors include his wife of 45 years, Everine Shelton of the home; a son, Paul Shelton, Blue Springs; three daughters, Donna Reeder and Pam Powell, both of Grain Valley, and Debra Serrano, Blue Springs; a brother, Olen Woodell, Springdale, Ark.; two sisters, Hazel Stewart, Owasso, Okla., and Barbara S. Bell, Houston; and 10 grandchildren.

Services will be at 8 p.m. Thursday at the church. Private graveside services. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Royer Funeral Home, Oak Grove.

WELDON I. FISK

Weldon I. Fisk, 81, Independence, died Saturday, July 12, 1997, at Columbia Independence Regional Health Center.

Mr. Fisk was born June 26, 1916, in Tuscola City, Mich., and had lived in Tucson, Ariz., before moving to Independence in 1980. He was a pipeline construction supervisor for Dow Chemical Co. for 35 years until retiring in 1977. He was a member of South Crysler Restoration Church.

His survivors include his wife, B. June Fisk of the home; a daughter, Patricia Allen, Lone Jack, Mo.; five brothers, Toras Fisk, Homer, Alaska, Murel Fisk, Escondido, Calif., and Chester Fisk, Hubert Fisk and Louis Fisk, all of Sterling, Mich.;four sisters, Helen Yenior, Sterling, Mich., Hazel Gulick, Tucson, Inez Brooks, Houghton Lake, Mich., and Mable Rose, Oak Grove; and one granddaughter.

Services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Speaks Midtown Chapel. Burial will be in Oak Ridge Memory Gardens. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 tonight at the chapel. The family suggests contributions to Lunch Partners, 709 W. Maple, Independence, Mo. 64050.

THELMA M. GILLETTE

Thelma M. Gillette, 63, Independence, died Friday, July 11, 1997, at Truman Medical Center East.

Mrs. Gillette was born June 9, 1934, in Independence and was a lifelong resident of Independence. She was employed in the housekeeping department at Howard Johnsons. Her husband, Ralph Gillette, died in 1996.

Her survivors include two daughters, Debra Brown, Independence, and Linda Allison, Oak Grove; a brother, Donald Dunham, Climax Springs, Mo.; four sisters, Mary Dowell, Lexington, Shirley Woodward, Warsaw, Mo., and Florence Louise Chapman and Betty Wicklin, both of Independence; four grandsons; and one granddaughter.

Graveside services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at Swan Lake Memorial Gardens, Blue Springs. Friends may call from 6:30 to8:30 tonight at George C. Carson & Sons Independence Chapel. Memorial contributions may be made to family to help defray funeral expenses.
