DONNA F. VAN TUYL

Donna Faye Van Tuyl, 75, Atherton, died Monday, July 7, 1997, at her home.

Mrs. Van Tuyl was a lifelong Jackson County resident. She was in the business of alterations and did volunteer work for 50 years. She contributed many hours to her church and community. She served as an organist for the Atherton Restoration Church, at weddings and funerals. She was an election judge for Jackson County, and was secretary/treasurer of Share of Atherton and United Stewards. She was preceded in death by her husband, Allan Van Tuyl.

Her survivors include one son, Dennis Van Tuyl, Independence; two daughters, Delores Macha, Independence, and Donita Cochran, Lexington, Mo.; one sister, Nelda Brosam, Lone Jack, Mo.; nine grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.

Memorial services will be 2 p.m. Sunday at the church. Private burial will be in Mound Grove cemetery.

LINDA M. SIMMONS

Linda Marie Simmons, 57, Buckner, died Thursday, Nov. 11, 1999, at St. Mary's Manor of Blue Springs.

Mrs. Simmons was born March 27, 1942, in Kansas City.

Her survivors include her husband of 28 years, Phillip Simmons, of the home; a daughter and son-in-law, Margie and Bill Brooks, Grain Valley; a son and daughter-in-law, William and Elizabeth Lowry, Centerview, Mo.; a sister, Deborah Sperling, Kansas City, Kan.; and four grandchildren.

Services will be 11 a.m., Monday, at Chapel of Memories, Grain Valley. Burial will be in Swan Lake Memorial Gardens. Friends may call from 10 a.m. to 11 a. m., Monday, at the chapel. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to K.C. Hospice of Cancer Action in Mrs. Simmons' name.

EARL C. MESERVE

Earl Charles Meserve of Independence, died Friday, Feb. 5, 1999, in West Chester, Pa.

Mr. Meserve was born Aug. 1, 1913, in Kingston, Ontario, Canada, and lived in Sylvan Hills, Ark., before moving to Independence in 1961. He had been a resident of The Fountains at Greenbriar since 1993. He had been chairman of the Citizens Council, Food Committee and the Employees Christmas Fund, and active in Men`s Bible study. He attended Trinity Presbyterian Church from 1961 to 1999, where he was an elder and deacon, and then the Fellowship Baptist Church from 1997 to 1999. He received a bachelor`s degree in civil engineering from Washington University, St. Louis. He worked for Horner & Shiffren Engineering Consultants, in St. Louis from 1938 to 1942 and from 1958 to 1961, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Little Rock Division, from 1942 to 1958, and for the Army Corps of Engineers, Kansas City Division, from 1961 until he retired in 1969. He had been active in the Boy Scouts of America, was an Eagle Scout, and was a Scoutmaster until 1942 in St. Louis. He had also been in the Civilian Conservation Corps, and was a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers and the American Geo-Physical Union. His wife, Marie Louise Binder Meserve, died on May 5, 1994.

His survivors include four daughters and three sons-in-law, Louise and William Rissler, Blue Springs, Judith and Hugh Campbell, Pittsburg, Kan., Joy and Glenn Miller, West Chester, Pa., and Nancy Meserve, La Habra, Calif.; seven grandchildren, Jennifer and Patrick Rissler, Turner and Matthew Campbell, Laura Hocknull, and Lt. Paul Miller and Jeffrey Miller; and three great-grandchildren, Mitchell Nutt, and Kaitlin and Gabriel Campbell.

Services will be 1 p.m. Wednesday at D.W. Newcomer`s Sons Noland Road Chapel. Burial will be in Floral Hills Memorial Gardens. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday at the chapel. The family suggests contributions to Scouting for Special Needs, Boy Scouts Heart of America, Council Blue Elk District, or Christ for Youth, in care of David Binder, 6561 Bradley, St. Louis, Mo. 63139.

LAURA I. MILLER

Laura I. Miller, 87, Independence, died Saturday, Feb. 6, 1999, at the Rosewood Health Care Center.

Mrs. Miller was born June 22, 1911, in Jasper, Mo., and had lived in the Independence area most of her life. She was preceded in death by her husband, Howard E. Miller, and one grandson, Clifford "Cal" Miller.

Her survivors include two sons, Robert Miller, Houston, and James Miller, Fayetteville, Ga.; one daughter, Carole Zelk, Independence; four grandsons, Thomas "Ted" Miller, and Randal, Gregory and Steven Winship; five great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Bertha Steck and Elsie Harper, both of Independence.

Graveside services were today at Greenwood cemetery. The family suggests contributions to the Rosewood Health Care Center. Arrangements were under the direction of the Speaks Midtown Chapel.

ALLEN W. "AL" CLOSSON

Allen Wayne "Al" Closson, 45, Buckner, died Friday, Feb. 5, 1999, at the Independence Regional Health Center.

Mr. Closson was born Sept. 2, 1953, in Independence. He was a self-employed carpenter. He was a 1971 graduate of Truman High School, was an Eagle Scout and had earned the Mile Swim Badge. He was preceded in death by his parents, Wayne and Harriet Closson.

His survivors include one sister, Patricia Ann Cammarata, St. Louis; and one brother, Roger Closson, Emporia, Kan.

Services will be private. Friends may call from 6:30 to 8 tonight at the George C. Carson & Sons Independence Chapel. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the American Heart Association.

KATHRYN B. MERTZ

Kathryn B. Mertz, 92, Lee`s Summit, died Saturday, Feb. 6, 1999.

Mrs. Mertz was born Oct. 26, 1906, in Kansas City. She had worked for Hallmark Cards and the Jones Store Co. before she retired. She was a member of the Our Lady of Presentation Catholic Church. Her husband, Edward J. Mertz, died in 1996.

Her survivors include one sister, Helen Michell, Kansas City; five nephews, Albert W. Stover and Carl Stover, both of Independence, Eugene Alff, Raytown, James Justice, Olathe, Kan., and Dr. John Justice, Springfield, Mo.; and two nieces, Mary Kay Nourse, Kansas City, and Judith Hudgens, Brookfield, Colo.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10 a.m. Thursday at the church, 130 N.W. Murray Road, Lee`s Summit. Burial will be in Mount Olivet cemetery, Raytown. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Carson Funeral Home, Blue Ridge Chapel, Kansas City, where wake prayer services will be at 7:30 p.m.

SANDRA S. ANDERSON

Sandra Sue Anderson, 48, Independence, died Friday, April 3, 1998, at St. Mary's Hospital, St. Louis, Mo.

Ms. Anderson was born May 16, 1949, in Independence, and was a lifelong Independence resident. She had worked for more than 25 years in the computer programming department of St. Mary's Hospitals in Kansas City, Blue Springs and St. Louis. She was a 1967 graduate of Truman High School and attended Graceland College. She was a member of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.

Her survivors include her parents, Kenneth and Georgie Anderson; a sister, Patricia Wilson, two nieces and a nephew, all from Independence.

Services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at the George C. Carson & Sons Independence Chapel. Burial will be in Mound Grove cemetery. Friends may call from 9 until service time at the chapel. The family suggests contributions to the American Cancer Society.

JOHN V. BONNER

John V. Bonner, 61, Independence, died Saturday, April 4, 1998, near Orrick, Mo.

Mr. Bonner was born July 10, 1936, in Macks Creek, Mo., and had lvied most of his life in this area. He was a surveyor for the Missouri Highway Department for 25 years and a party chief coordinator for Shafer Kline and Warren before his retirement in 1992. He was a member of the Rockwood Baptist Church.

His survivors include his wife, Sandra Bonner of the home; two daughters, Debbie Ott, Blue Springs, and Karen Renetta Bonner, Atlanta, Ga.; three sisters, Leta Green, Burlah Mouler, both of Macks Creek, and Ruby Chapman, Buffalo, Mo.; and three grandchildren, John, Callie and Jacob Ott.

Services will be 1 p.m. Tuesday at the Speaks Suburban Chapel. Graveside services and burial will be at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday at Laurel Oak cemetery, Windsor, Mo. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 tonight at the chapel. The family suggests memorial contributions to the Rockwood Baptist Church.

VINCENT A. CONA

Vincent A. Cona, 73, Blue Springs, died Saturday, April 4, 1998, at St. Mary's Manor Nursing Center.

Mr. Cona was born May 4, 1924, in Kansas City, had lived in Independence before moving to Blue Springs. He was a lifelong area resident. He had been a fire fighter for the Kansas City Fire Department for 33 years until retirement. He was an Army veteran of World War II. He was preceded in death by his wife, Joan Cona in February 1997.

His survivors include a son, Vincent M. Cona, Kansas City; a daughter, Kathleen Kemery, Blue Springs; a sister, Fona Messina, Kansas City; seven grandchildren.

Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday at Newcomer's Noland Road Chapel; cremation.

GERALDINE E. "JERRY" GROSS

Geraldine E. "Jerry" Gross, 77, Blue Springs, died Saturday, April 4, 1998, at North Kansas City Hospital.

Mrs. Gross was born in Kansas City. She was a member of the Ladies Sodality at St. Francis Xavier Church. She was a permanent member of Women's International Bowling Congress. She was preceded in death by her husband, Leo L. Gross Jr. in 1976.

Her survivors include a son, Otto L. Gross, Kansas City; four daughters, Jerry Temposky, Sarasota, Fla., Eva Snyder, Phoenix, Ariz., Cathey Lynch, Blue Springs, and Donna Mathieson, Bates City; three sisters, Virginia Hensevelt, Homestead, Fla., Sister Margaret Mary Liebst, O.C.S. Farmington, N.M., and Marge Brink, North Kansas City; and nine grandchildren.

Services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Muehlebach Funeral Home. Interment will be in Mount Olivet cemetery. Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home, where the rosary will be said at 8 p.m.

VERA C. HORST

Vera Catherine Horst, 75, Mesa, Ariz., died Friday, April 3, 1998, at Citadel Care Center in Mesa.

Mrs. Horst was born July 6, 1922, in Tulare, Calif., and had lived in the Kansas City area from 1929 to 1945. She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ, Valley of the Sun Restoration Branch in Mesa.

Her survivors include her husband of 50 years, Limer Horst of the home; a daughter, Gena Hopkins, Independence; a son, Gary Horst, Aurora, Calif.; a brother, Leonard Smith, Napoleon, Mo.; and three grandchildren, Daniel and Jennifer Hopkins, Independence, and Aaron Horst, Aurora, Colo.

Services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Royer Funeral Home, Oak Grove. Burial will be in Oak Grove cemetery. Friends may call from 1 until service time at the funeral home.

ROY L. MILAM

Roy L. Milam, 84, Oak Grove, died Saturday, April 4, 1998, at the Medical Center of Independence.

Mr. Milam was born March 10, 1914, in Liberty, Mo. He was a retired carpenter, auto worker at Ford Motor Co., and farmer. He ws a former member of the UAW and the Carpenter's Union. He was a member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church. He was preceded in death by a son, Gary Leroy Milam in 1946, and a brother, Ray Milam in 1991.

His survivors include his wife of 57 years, Mary Kay Milam of the home; a son, Louie Milam, Edwardsville, Ill.; two daughters, Margie Cox, Bates City, and Rita Stevens, Amarillo, Texas; a sister, Florence Owings, Liberty, Mo.; 12 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Services were today at the Royer Funeral Home, Oak Grove. Burial was in Oak Grove cemetery.

DELORES A. PHILLIPS

Delores A. Phillips, 64, Independence, died Saturday, April 4, 1998, at the Medical Center of Independence.

Mrs. Phillips was born March 14, 1934, in Purcell, Mo. She retired from Stuart Hall Stationery in 1994.

Her survivors include her husband, Chester Phillips of the home; a son, Steven Gosvener, Church Point, La.; two daughters, Karen Frazier, Independence, and Rhonda Corbett, Odessa; her mother, Helen Van Dyke, Kansas City; a niece; 12 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at D.W. Newcomer's Sons Floral Hills Chapel. Intombment will be in the Floral Hills Mausoleum. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday at the chapel. The family suggests contributions to the American Cancer Society.

JEAN W. ELWELL

Jean W. Elwell, 91, Independence, died Wednesday, April 22, 1998, at the Rosewood Health Center at The Groves.

Mrs. Elwell was born in Pittsburg, Kan., and lived in Oklahoma before moving to Missouri in 1974. She was a member of the RLDS Stone Church congregation. She was preceded in death by her husband, Harry M. Elwell in July 1990.

Her survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Harry M.G. and Laura Elwell, Edmond, Okla.; two daughters, Mrs. Alfred Barr (Eva Jean), Morgantown, W.Va., and Mrs. Gailyn Nevill (Velda Lee), Austin, Texas; seven grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Services will be 2 p.m. Friday at the Speaks Midtown Chapel. Burial will be in Mound Grove cemetery. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 tonight and from 1 to 2 p.m. Friday at the chapel. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the Graceland School of Nursing in Independence or the Hospice Program at Independence Regional Health Center.

HILDEGARDE E. "BILLIE" LANG

Hildegarde E. "Billie" Lang, 85, Independence, died Tuesday, April 21, 1998, at the Medical Center of Independence.

Mrs. Lang was born April 14, 1913, in St. Louis and had lived in Independence most of her life. She was a homemaker and a member of St. Ann`s Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus Ladies Auxiliary. She was preceded in death by her husband, William H. Lang in 1971, and two sons, James W. Lang in 1942 and Lawrence D. Lang in 1975.

Her survivors include a daughter, Joan Lakey, Independence; six grandchildren, Denise Lakey and Karen Lakey, both of Sugar Creek, Dana Glenn, Kansas City, David Lakey, Independence, and Alan Lang, Denver; and a great-granddaughter, Kelsey Glenn.

Mass will be 10 a.m. Saturday at the church. Burial will be in the St. Mary`s section of Woodlawn cemetery. Friends may call from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Friday at the George C. Carson & Sons Independence Chapel, where a rosary will be said at 7 p.m.

OUIDA M. THOMPSON

Ouida M. Thompson, 64, Independence, died Tuesday, April 21, 1998, at Research Medical Center.

Mrs. Thompson was born Sept. 6, 1933, in Dalhart, Texas, and had lived in this area most of her life. She was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church. Her husband, Lee Thompson, died in 1997.

Her survivors include her children, Dana J. LoPorto, Independence, Phillip Thompson, Nashville, Tenn., Denise Rebar, Danville, Calif., Charles Huntley, Phoenix, Ariz., Tom Thompson, Columbia, S.C., Ted Thompson and Bill Thompson, both of Memphis, Tenn., Orval L. Thompson III, Henderson, Nev., Valmari Schirmer, Nurenberg, Germany, and Michael Thompson, Iowa; a sister, Illona Hill, Cameron, Mo.; 19 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Services will be 2 p.m. Friday at the Speaks Suburban Chapel; cremation. Friends may call from 1 to 2 p.m. Friday at the chapel. The family suggests contributions to Easter Seals.
