MYRTLE J. SANDERS

Myrtle Jimerson Sanders, 75, Blue Springs, died Sunday, June 29, 1997, at the Medical Center of Independence.

Mrs. Sanders was born Oct. 9, 1921, in Prattsville, Ark. She attended Oak Park Baptist Church and All Saints Lutheran Church. She was owner/operator of a housecleaning company. She was preceded in death by her husband, Charlie Sanders on June 12, 1973.

Her survivors include two daughters, Janis Broullette, Blue Springs, and Patricia Gautreaux, Folsom, La.; and three grandchildren.

Services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Shady Grove Baptist Church and cemetery, Wossburg, Miss. The family suggests contributions to the American Cancer Society. Arrangements are under the direction of Webb-Freer Funeral Home.

ALLEN W. SMITH

Allen Wayne Smith, 36, Odessa, died Saturday, June 28, 1997, at Truman Medical Center, Kansas City.

Mr. Smith was born Aug. 21, 1960, in Clinton, Mo., and had lived in northeast Kansas City before moving to Odessa 12 years ago. He was a laborer. He was a Baptist.

His survivors include his wife, Linnie Smith of the home; a stepson, Andrew James Silvers, and a stepdaughter, Angela Lynn Silvers, both of Odessa; his parents, Gary S. Smith and Doris Smith, both of Odessa; a brother, Gary L. Smith, Odessa; a niece, Amber Smith; and a nephew, Kyle Smith, both of Odessa.

Private memorial services will be at 7 tonight at the home of Gary Smith.

JENNIE SPRINGSTON

Jennie Springston, 94, Odessa, died Sunday, June 29, 1997, at New Haven Nursing Home, Odessa.

Mrs. Springston was born Sept. 30, 1902. She was preceded in death by her husband, Roy Springston, and a daughter, Hazel Wimpey. She was a member of the First Baptist Church, Monett, Mo.

Her survivors include three sons, Robert L. Springston, Blue Springs, Ernest A. Springston, Monett, and Donald A. Springston, Higginsville, Mo.; a daughter, Arlene Heeter, Grain Valley; 25 grandchildren and step grandchildren; 57 great-grandchildren; and 13 great-great-grandchildren.

Services will be 1 p.m. Thursday at the First Baptist Church, Monett. Friends may call from 7 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Buchanan Funeral Home, Monett.

RUBY A. BROWN

Ruby A. Brown, 90, Blue Springs, died Sunday, March 23, 1997, at Blue Springs Healthcare Center.

Mrs. Brown was born Oct. 29, 1906, in Tifton, Ga., and had lived in this area for 5 1/2 years. She was a member of the Baptist Church of St. Petersburg, Fla.

Her survivors include a son, Jim Strickland, Memphis, Tenn.; a daughter, Ann Nordvall, Independence; a sister, Kathleen Darwin, Lubbock, Texas; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Services will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Park Lawn Funeral Home, Kansas City. Burial will be in Memorial Park cemetery, Kansas City. Friends may call from 10 to 11 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

FERN L. CRAVEN

Fern L. Craven, 90, Kansas City, formerly of Buckner, died Sunday, March 23, 1997, at Truman Medical Center East.

Mrs. Craven was born Aug. 15, 1906, and lived in Buckner from 1931 until moving to Kansas City in 1987. She was a restaurant owner for 35 years, retiring in 1972. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Buckner. Her husband, William H. Craven, died in 1979.

Her survivors include a son, Shannon D. Craven, Lee's Summit; a daughter, Eunice F. Dunnam, Merrillville, Ind.; a sister, Jewell Kiesel, Louisville, Ky.; for grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Graveside services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday in Buckner cemetery. The family suggests contributions to the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Reppert-Brown Funeral Home, Buckner.

FLOYD E. HENSON

Floyd E. Henson, 68, Flora, Ill., died Sunday, March 23, 1997, at Clay County Hospital.

Mr. Henson was born Nov. 25, 1928, in Orchardville, Ill. He was superintendent of Flora Community Consolidated Schools from 1959 to 1972, first superintendent of Unit School District from 1973 to 1992 and was a member of the Illinois Association of School Superintendents and a past member of the Illinois Education Association. He was a member of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, Flora Branch, evangelist patriarch in the Southeast Illinois District and past district president and past Flora Branch president. He was a member of the Industrial Commission, Library Board, Friends of the Library, Rotary Club, past hospital board member, originator and board member of the Academic Foundation, and a member of the Ministerial Alliance, all in Flora.

His survivors include his wife, Priscilla Crowell Henson, Flora; three sons, Mark Henson, Kansas City, Kan., and Todd Henson and Drew Henson, both of Independence; a daughter, Alison Smith, Independence; a brother, Phil Henson, Flora; and six grandchildren.

Services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Flora RLDS Church. Burial will be in Brush Creek cemetery, Xenia, Ill. Friends may call from 5 to 8 tonight at the Frank & Bright Funeral Home, Flora. The family suggests contributions to the Friends of the Flora Library or the Flora Academic Foundation.

CLEDA M. KERN

Cleda Mae Kern, 64, Independence, died Sunday, March 23, 1997, at her home.

Mrs. Kern was born April 6, 1932, in Lincoln, Mo. She was a layout operator for AT&T for 25 years, retiring in 1988, and was a member of the Telephone Pioneers of America. She was a Christian and a member of the CWA and American Legion Auxiliary.

Her survivors include her husband, James E. Kern of the home; two sons, Wayne Shipman, Colony, Texas, and Keith Shipman, Frisco, Texas; two daughters, Carol Brown and Mary Sewell, both of Independence; four brothers, Donald Chapin, Excelsior Springs, Mo., Ronald Chapin, Blue Springs, Jimmy Chapin, Warsaw, Mo., and Raymond Chapin, Independence; two sisters, Linda Hylton, Pleasant Valley, Mo., and Margie Leinhouser, Des Moines, Iowa; and 10 grandchildren.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Webb-Freer Funeral Home, Blue Springs. Burial will be in Blue Springs cemetery. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. The family suggests contributions to the Kansas City Hospice or the American Cancer Society.

RAYMOND P. McCONNELL

Raymond P. McConnell, 81, Overland Park, Kan., formerly of Independence, died Sunday, March 23, 1997, at the Life Care Center of Overland Park.

Mr. McConnell was born June 10, 1915, in Liberty, Mo., and had lived in Independence most of his life. He moved to Overland Park in 1994. He retired from Allis-Chalmers in 1979 with more than 40 years of service at Allis-Chalmers and its predecessor, the Gleaner Harvester Co. He also worked with the Junior Achievement program during that time. He was a CG-4A glider pilot with the Army Air Corps during World War II and participated in the Allied crossing of the Rhine River. He received the Air Medal and FAME Ribbon.

His survivors include his wife of 55 years, Mary Charlotte Irving McConnell of the Life Care Center; two daughters, Mary Pat Priner, Lenexa, Kan., and Jean McConnell, Gladstone, Mo.; and three grandsons, Air Force Lt. Steve Priner, Michael Priner and Craig Priner.

Services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at D.W. Newcomer's Sons Overland Park Chapel. Burial will be in Mount Moriah cemetery, Kansas City. The family suggests contributions to the First Presbyterian Church building fund, 100 N. Pleasant St., Independence, Mo. 64050, or the aquarium fund of the Life Care Center, 7541 Switzer, Overland Park, Kan. 66214.

NICK NIFLIS

Nick Niflis, 86, Independence, died Monday, March 24, 1997, at Columbia Independence Regional Health Center.

Mr. Niflis was born April 1, 1910, in Smyrna, Turkey, and came to America at the age of two from Athens, Greece. He moved to Independence in the early 1940s. He began his career as a stone mason at the age of 14 in Carthage, Mo., learned to polish stone and later learned to cut stone. He had worked for Johnson and Sons Monument Co. and other companies. He was a member of the First Baptist Church.

His survivors include a son, Michael Niflis, Tillamook, Ore.; a daughter, Gloria Daniel, Independence; two sisters, Mary Metzger and Eleanora Smith, both of Puntagoda, Fla.; 11 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Services will be 10 a.m. Thursday at the Carson Independence Chapel. Burial will be in Mound Grove cemetery. Friends may call from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at the chapel.

JAMES G. PARR

James G. "Jim" Parr, 55, Blue Springs, died Saturday, March 22, 1997.

Mr. Parr was born March 22, 1942, in Kansas City, Kan. He owned Daddy Cool's Juke Box Rental and previously co-owned Jim Parr Suzuki in Kansas City, Kan. He was past president of the 20th Century Financial Corp., a 1960 graduate of Raytown High School and an Eagle Scout.

His survivors include his wife, Carolyn Parr of the home; a son, Steve Parr, Phoenix, Ariz.; a daughter, Shannon Chamberlain, Grain Valley; his father and stepmother, James and Faye Parr, Blue Springs; his mother, Madeleine Carr, Kingwood, Texas; his twin sister, Judy Horridge, Houston; two other sisters, Donna Lovelace, Lee's Summit, and Marie Berilgen, Kingwood; two brothers, Mike Parr, Las Vegas, Nev., and Russell Parr, Independence; and four grandchildren, Nicholas, Sean, Lindsey and Lauren.

Services will be 3 p.m. Wednesday at D.W. Newcomer's Sons Floral Hills Chapel, Kansas City. Burial will be in Floral Hills Memorial Gardens, Kansas City. Friends may call from 2 to 3 p.m. Wednesday at the chapel. The family suggests contributions to the American Cancer Society.

LURA PHELPS

Lura Craven Phelps, 92, Independence, died Saturday, March 8, 1997, in the Rosewood Health Care Center, The Groves (Resthaven).

Mrs. Phelps was born in Montrose County, Colo., and lived in Olathe, Kan., before moving to Independence. She had lived at The Groves since 1977. She was a life member of the Reorganized Chuch of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and participated in The Groves congregation.

Her survivors include a son, James Craven, Mentor, Ohio; a daughter, Darleen Swails, Lee's Summit; a sister, Freda Durand, Ogden, Utah; five grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Memorial services will be 2 p.m. Saturday at the Speaks Midtown Chapel. The family suggests contributions to the RLDS Temple Endowment Fund, Box 1059, Independence, Mo. 64051, or to The Groves Endowment Fund, 1515 W. White Oak, Independence, Mo. 64050.

FLORENCE SHAW

Florence Strode Shaw, 76, Lee's Summit, died Monday, March 24, 1997, at her home.

Mrs. Shaw was born Dec. 2, 1920, in Blue Springs.

Services will be 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Webb-Freer Funeral Home, Blue Springs. Burial will be in Woodlawn cemetery. Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

DENNIS R. CHOAT

Dennis Ray Choat, 56, Independence, died Sunday, July 20, 1997, at Independence Manor Care Center.

Mr. Choat was born Nov. 13, 1940, in Parma, Mo., and had lived in Independence most of his life. He was a machine operator at the Allis Chalmers/AGCO Corp. for 29 years, retiring in 1991, and was a member of United Steel Workers Local 1958. He attended Trinity Baptist Church.

His survivors include his wife of 31 years, Rosetta Choat of the home; two daughters, Christina Marie Rosecrans and Lisa Lee Wood, and his mother, Mary Lee Choat, all of Independence; one brother, Bobby L. Choat, Burkburnett, Texas; and five grandchildren.

Services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at D.W. Newcomer`s Sons Noland Road Chapel. Burial will in Floral Hills East Memorial Gardens. Friends may call from 7 to 8 tonight at the chapel.

BILL HEATER

Bill Heater, 90, Leeton, Mo., formerly of this area, died Friday, July 18, 1997, at Westwood Nursing Homein Clinton, Mo.

Mr. Heater was born July 15, 1907, in Gower, Mo. He was a carpenter and mill wright for more than 50 years with the Carpenter`s District Council in the Independence and Kansas City areas. He also worked on the installation of missile silos in the area of Whiteman Air Force Base. He was an Army veteran of World War II, a member of Veteran of Foreign Wars Post 2610, Windsor, Mo., and the Calhoun (Mo.) American Legion, and was a former member of VFW Post 1000 in Independence.

His survivors include his wife, Thyra J. Moorman Heater of the home; two sons, Robert Heater, Knob Noster, Mo., and Donald Heater, Rheinburg, Germany; two brothers, Robert Heater, Independence, and Donald Heater, Kansas City; five sisters, Dorothy Romines and Irene Barnett, both of Independence, Helen Bailey, Kansas City, Lela Fowler, Atchison, Kan., Alice Railey, California; three grandchildren, Robert, Kimberly and Karen; four great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Services were today at the Hadley Funeral Home, Windsor. Burial was in Mineral Creek cemetery, Leeton. The family suggests contributions to the Boy Scouts of America, in care of the funeral home.

MALCOLM HESSE

Malcolm Hesse, 48, Lee`s Summit, died Thursday, July 17, 1997, at Lee`s Summit Hospital.

Mr. Hesse was born in Hannibal, Mo., and had lived in Texas and Mexico, Mo., before moving to this area in 1992. He was a salesman for MFA Agri Services in Odessa for the past six years. He was an Army veteran and a member of Lee`s Summit United Methodist Church.

His survivors include his wife, Nancy Hesse of the home; and one son, Brian Hesse, St. Louis.

Graveside services were today at Floral Hills East cemetery, Kansas city. Arrangements were under the direction of the Speaks Suburban Chapel.

ARVAL L. HOUCHENS

Arval Lester Houchens, 78, Blue Springs, died Friday, July 18, 1997, at the Medical Center of Independence.

Mr. Houchens was born Nov. 8, 1918, in Beamen, Mo. He worked for the Lake City Army Ammunition Plant for 12 years, retiring in 1979. He owned and operated a service station for 25 years. He was a 3rd degree life member of the Knights of Columbus and a member of St. Robert Bellarmine Catholic Church. He was a World War II veteran and served on LST 993.

His survivors include his wife, Ella Marie Houchens, and one daughter, Karen Sue Helm, both of Blue Springs;one brother, Marcellus Frickie, Albuquerque; two stepsisters, Luella Henderson, Tunis, Mo., and Marilyn Wheeler, Wheatland, Mo.; one grandson, Dale Allan Beyer; and two great-granddaughters; and several nieces and nephews.

Services were today at the church. Burial was in St. Mary`s cemetery, Higginsville, Mo. The family suggests contributions to Masses for Church. Arrangements were under the direction of Webb-Freer Funeral Home, Blue Springs.
