LOYD ALLISON

Loyd Allison, 69, Independence, died Monday, Nov. 9, 1998.

Mr. Allison was born Aug. 21, 1929, in Heber Springs, Ark., and had lived in the Gower, Mo., and the Kansas City area until moving to Independence in 1959. He was a veteran of the Korean War. He was a welder for Hesse Carriage Corp. for 27 years and had worked for Brunson Instrument, Kansas City, since 1987. He was a life member of the Fraas-Fain Post 1000 VFW and a member of Aeries Eagles Lodge 3717, both in Independence. He was a member of the United Auto Worker's in Kansas City.

His survivors include his wife, Melva Allison of the home; a son, Keith Douglas Allison, Independence; three daughters, Brenda Noland, Raymore, Mo., Ronda Price, Blue Springs, and Glenda Stamper of the home; a sister, Hazel Hamilton, Independence; and 16 grandchildren, Jessica, Jonathan, Kaylia, Allison, Benjamin, Tasha, Mariah, Patricia, Molly, Kari, William, Jennifer, Terry, Cody, Blake and Taylor.

Services will be 2 p.m. Friday at the Hixson-Klein Funeral Home, Gower. Burial with military graveside services conducted by the Fraas-Fain Post 1000 VFW of Independence will be in the Allen cemetery, Gower. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

JOHANNA R. ELLIS

Johanna R. Ellis, 62, Blue Springs, died Tuesday, Nov. 10, 1998, at Research Hospital.

Mrs. Ellis was born March 12, 1936, in Webster Groves, Mo. She was a homemaker. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Blue Springs. She was preceded in death by her husband, William Ace Ellis on July 22, 1992.

Her survivors include two daughters, Kathy Bailey, Blue Springs, and Tricia Tarr, Odessa; a son, Ace Ellis, Blue Springs; and nine grandchildren.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the Webb-Freer Funeral Home, Blue Springs. Burial will be in Floral Hills cemetery. The family suggests contributions to the Kidney Foundation, 1900 West 47th Place, Roeland Park, Kan. 66205.

LOUISE "LOU" M. HALER

Louise "Lou" May Haler, 78, Blue Springs, died Sunday, Nov. 8, 1998, at her home.

Mrs. Haler was born June 13, 1920, and had lived in Blue Springs for more than 31 years. She owned and operated Lou's Furnace and Filter Service with her husband, Howard Haler. She was preceded in death by her husband, Howard Haler on April 9, 1993.

Her survivors include two daughters, Mary Luise Baker, Blue Springs, and Betty Jean Haler, Stuart, Fla.; two granddaughters, Tracy Lynn Pollock, Independence, and Lori Lee Stough, Columbia; a son-in-law, David Lee Baker, Blue Springs; two grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Services will be 2 p.m. Friday at Truman Medical Center East Chapel, Lee's Summit. The body was donated to science. The family suggests contributions to the Truman Medical Center East.

LILLIE V. LAWSON

Lillie Virginia Lawson, 57, Blue Springs, died Monday, Nov. 9, 1998, at St. Mary's Hospital of Blue Springs.

Mrs. Lawson was born April 10, 1941, in Sweet Springs, Mo., and had lived in this area for most of her life. She was a member of the Country Club of Blue Springs, the 18 Hole Ladies Golf Association and the Women's Golf Association of Kansas City. She was a Presbyterian.

Her survivors include her husband, John Lawson of the home; a daughter, Kari Lawson Manuel, Knoxville, Tenn., a son and daughter-in-law, Bart and Cris Lawson, Lee's Summit; her father, Forrest Reid, Houstonia, Mo.; a sister, Barbara Bryan, Sedalia, Mo.; a brother, Thomas Reid, Sweet Springs, Mo.; and three grandchildren, Annie, Spencer and Crystal Lawson.

Services will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Speaks Suburban Chapel, Independence. Burial will be in Blue Springs cemetery. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday at the chapel. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the Susan Komen Foundation for Breast Cancer.

GARNETT E. TODD

Garnett E. Todd, 86, rural Odessa, died Tuesday, Nov. 10, 1998, at Truman Medical Center, Kansas City.

Mr. Todd was born Feb. 10, 1912, in rural Oak Grove. He had worked for Sheffield Steel (Armco) for more than 22 years and farmed south of Odessa for many years. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Nancy Jean Todd.

His survivors include his wife of 61 years, Gladys Todd; three daughters, Norma Major and Patricia Gann, both of Odessa, and Jane Langevin, Oak Grove; a sister, Helen Smith, Raytown; seven grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Graveside services will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Oak Grove cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to Truman Medical Center East Auxiliary, 7900 Lee's Summit Road, Kansas City, Mo. 64139.

MURREL "GENE" MATTINGLY

Murrel "Gene" Mattingly, Independence, died Saturday, Nov. 28, 1998, at his home.

Mr. Mattingly was born March 12, 1922, in Independence. He graduated from Benjamin Harrison Elementary School in Kansas City and from William Chrisman High School in 1940. He attended Kansas City Junior College, the University of Kansas, Lawrence, and the Kansas City Art Institute. He served for 20 years in the United States Naval Reserve, serving on full active duty during World War II and during the Korean War, and retired after serving as chief hospital corpsman. He was a member of the American Association of U.S. Navy Hospital Corpsmen.

He worked for the Veteran's Administration Hospital in Kansas City, being assigned to the Medical Administration Division, retiring after 20 years of service. He was an artist, serving two terms as president of the Independence Art Association, and one term as president of the Greater Kansas City Art Association. He was a Free Mason and was a member of McDonald Lodge 324, A.F.&.A.M. in Independence, Independence Chapter 12 of Royal Arch Masons, Palestine Commandery 17, Knights Templar, Independence Council 49, Cryptic Masons, Independence, 32nd Degree Scottish Rite of Freemasonary, Southern Jurisdiction of U.S.A., and the Legion of Honor of the Ararat Shrine in Kansas City. He followed the teachings of Unity. He leaves no family.

Services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at the George C. Carson & Sons Independence Chapel. Burial will be in Mount Washington cemetery. Visitation will be held from 6 to 7:30 tonight at the chapel, where Masonic services will be held at 7 p.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions are suggested to the Shriner's Childrens Hospital Fund.

VIOLA M. AIRRINGTON

Viola Mae Airrington, 78, Oak Grove, died Tuesday, Feb. 2, 1999, at St. Mary's Hospital of Blue Springs.

Mrs. Airrington was born Oct. 11, 1920, in Oak Grove. She was a homemaker. She was preceded in death by one son, Larry James "Butch" Airrington on Jan. 27, 1972.

Her survivors include her husband, Vernon Airrington, Oak Grove; four sons, Lloyd Airrington, Verona, Mo., Richard Airrington, East Lynn, Mo., B. Louis Airrington, Bates City, and Alan Airrington, Oak Grove; three daughters, Ethel Burns, Oak Grove, Marylin Hilt, Oklahoma City, and Eleanor Gallaway, Independence; 20 grandchildren; and 27 great-grandchildren.

Services will be 2 p.m. Friday at the Langsford Funeral Home, Lee's Summit. Burial will be in Lone Jack cemetery. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 tonight at the funeral home.

ROBERT C. BLACKBURN SR.

Robert Crayton Blackburn Sr., 72, Blue Springs, died Saturday, April 11, 1998, at St. Mary`s Hospital of Blue Springs.

Mr. Blackburn was born March 5, 1926, in Lake City, Mo. He was owner/operator of 40 & 7 Laundry in Blue Springs, and a Merchant Marine veteran.

His survivors include his wife, Mary Blackburn, and a son, Robert Blackburn Jr., both of the home; three daughters, Janice Ann Claypole and Linda K. Logeman, both of Blue Springs, and Sharon L. Humbird, Buckner; three grandchildren, Brent Logeman, Eric Logeman and Jeff Davis; one step granddaughter, Nicole Sims; and one great-granddaughter.

Services willl be 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Webb-Freer Funeral Home, Blue Springs. Burial will be in Blue Springs cemetery. Friends may call from 6:30 to 8 tonight at the funeral home.

JACK H. BYERLY

Jack H. Byerly, 88, Independence, died Friday, April 10, 1998, at Independence Regional Health Center.

Mr. Byerly was born March 30, 1910, in Cooleemee, N.C., and had lived in Independence for 60 years. He was a certified dental technician for various dental laboratories for 65 years. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Independence, American Legion and Masonic Lodge 76. He was an Air Force veteran of World War II.

His survivors include his wife, Madge Byerly of the home; and a sister.

Memorial services will be 7 p.m. Tuesday at D.W. Newcomer`s Sons Noland Road Chapel; cremation. Friends may call from 7 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the chapel. The family requests no flowers.

ARVEL B. FISHER

Arvel B. Fisher, 79, Sibley, died Saturday, April 11, 1998, at the Medical Center of Independence.

Mr. Fisher was born Jan. 25, 1919, in Oak Grove and was a lifelong area resident. He served as a deputy sheriff for Jackson County from 1946 until he retired in 1978, and had also been a farmer. He was a member of the San Benito Baptist Church, Harlingen, Texas, Buckner Masonic Lodge, Ararat Shrine Temple and the Scottish Rite. He was preceded in death by a daughter and a grandson.

His survivors include his wife, Margaret Fisher of the home; a son, Herald Fisher, and two sisters, Louise Beaver and Lena Pearl Hatcher, all of Independence; five grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews and one great-great-nephew.

Services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Brown Funeral Home, Buckner. Burial will be in Buckner Hill cemetery. Friends may call from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home, where Masonic services will be held at 6:45 p.m. The family suggests contributions to the Bench Fund at the cemetery.

FLOYD HASKELL JR.

Floyd Haskell Jr., 65, Drexel, Mo., died Friday, April 10, 1998, at the Veteran`s Administration Hospital.

Mr. Haskell was born in Clinton, Mo., and had lived in the Greater Kansas City area most of his life. He was a self-employed masonry contractor for 42 years in the Kansas City area. He was an Army veteran of the Korean War and a member of the Baptist faith.

His survivors include his wife, Linda Haskell, White House, Tenn.; three sons, Greg A. Haskell, Independence, Jeffery W. Haskell, Drexel, and Steven K. Haskell, North Kansas City; a daughter, Kela S. McLaughlin, his mother, Mamie R. Haskell, and a brother, Dan Haskell, all of Blue Springs; two stepchildren, Chris Tuthill and Samantha Tuthill; a sister, Doris J. Spainhower, Boliver, Mo.; seven grandsons; and two step grandsons.

Services will be 1 p.m. Tuesday at the Shawnee Mound (Mo.) Cumberland Presbyterian Church. Burial will be in Shawnee Mound cemetery. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 tonight at D.W. Newcomer`s Sons Blue Springs Chapel.

ORA HOUSER

Ora Houser, 87, Independence, died Wednesday, April 8, 1998, at Cedar Valley Care Center.

Mrs. Houser was a homemaker.

Her survivors include three sons, Robert Houser and George Houser, both of Kansas City, Paul Houser, Independence; two daughters, Pat Fossett and Carol Bryant, both of Buckner; 32 grandchildren; and 56 great-grandchildren.

Services were Saturday at Hinton-Gibson Funeral Home, Raytown. Burial was in Green Lawn cemetery, Kansas City.

VERNA L. JASPER

Verna Lee Jasper, 85, Independence, died Friday, April 10, 1998, at Oakwood Manor Nursing Home in Kansas City.

Miss Jasper was born Dec. 10, 1912, in New Bloomfield, Mo. She received a bachelor`s degree in teaching from Missouri State College in Warrensburg, and a degree in dietetics from Kansas State College. She taught school and worked on her dietetics degree. She was a dietitian at the Veteran`s Administration Hospital in Excelsior Springs, Mo., and later became the head dietitian at the VA Hospital in Topeka, retiring in 1973. She was a member of the Mount Washington Order of the Eastern Star, Kansas City chapter of Royal Neighbors, and the First United Methodist Church of Independence.

Her survivors include a sister, Helen Margret Jasper; three nieces, Loveta Borden, Cheryl Peters, Meredith Meschini; a nephew, William Jasper; five great-nieces; and seven great-nephews.

Graveside services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at Mount Washington cemetery. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 tonight at the George C. Carson & Sons Independence Chapel, where Eastern Star services will be held at 8 p.m.

MARY M. MAREK

Mary Magdalene Marek, 79, Sugar Creek, died Friday, April 10, 1998, at Independence Regional Health Center.

Mrs. Marek was born Dec. 13, 1918, in Sugar Creek and was a lifelong Sugar Creek resident. She was a homemaker and a member of St. Cyril Catholic Church, Ladies Altar Society and the Sugar Creek Democratic Club. She was a former member of the Sugar Creek Business and Civic Club. Her husband, Michael J. Marek, died in 1986.

Her survivors include three sons, Ronald E. Marek, Sugar Creek, Joseph M. Marek, Coventry, Conn., and James M. Marek, Holt, Mo.; a daughter, Vicki S. Stumpenhaus, Friendswood, Texas; a sister, Anne Cholak, Sugar Creek; and five grandchildren.

Services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at the church. Burial will be in Woodlawn cemetery. Friends may call from 6:30 to 8 tonight at the George C. Carson & Sons Independence Chapel, where Altar Society services will be held at 6 p.m. and the Rosary will be said at 7 p.m. The family suggests contributions to the Sugar Creek Citizens Civic Relief Committee.

RICHARD M. ROMDALL

Richard M. Romdall, 86, Montrose, Mo., died Saturday, April 11, 1998, at the Golden Valley Memorial Hospital in Clinton, Mo.

Mr. Romdall was born Sept. 26, 1911, in Montrose and was a lifelong Montrose resident. He was a farmer and drove a bus for the Montrose R-14 School District, retiring in 1972. He was preceded in death by two sons, Harold Park and Roger Romdall.

His survivors include his wife, Ruby Romdall of the home; a son, Russell Romdall, Independence; three daughters, Betty Cooper, El Dorado Springs, Mo., and Linda James and Mary Jane Locke, both of Appleton City, Mo.; and 11 grandchildren.

Services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Hill & Son Funeral Home, Appleton City. Burial will be in Montrose cemetery. The family suggests contributions to the National Kidney Foundation.

RICKEY L. RUSSUM

Rickey Lee Russum, 40, Independence, died Friday, April 10, 1998, at Independence Regional Health Center.

Mr. Russum was born in Kansas City. He was a steel fabricator for Art Iron Works.

His survivors include his wife, Marlena Russum, Independence; a son, Jacob Lee Russum, Kansas City; a daughter, Lisa Russum, Independence; a stepson, Craig Faith Jr., a stepdaughter, Angela Faith, a brother, Robert Glenn Russum II, and his maternal grandmother, Mabel McDonald, all of Independence; and his aunt, Ruth Cornell.

Services will be 1 p.m. April 20 at Floral Hills Memorial Gardens, Kansas City. Burial will be in Floral Hills Memorial Gardens. Friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. April 19 at D.W. Newcomer`s Sons Floral Hills Chapel, Kansas City. Contributions are suggested to the family to help defray funeral expenses, in care of the funeral home.
