MATILDA H. SMALLEY
Matilda Helen Smalley, 83, Smithville, Mo., died Thursday, Feb. 20, 1997, at the Smithville Convalescence Center.
Mrs. Smalley was born March 13, 1913, in Winner, S.D., and had lived in Independence for more than 50 years before moving to Smithville seven years ago. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lucien Guy Smalley.
Her survivors include a son, Douglas Guy Smalley, San Antonia, Texas; two daughters, Guyla Blackwell, Gladstone, and Catherine Smalley, Smithville; a brother, Ben Smalley, Winner, S.D.; four sisters, Katherine Wright, Omaha, Neb., Sylvia Foss, Winner, Gladys McCafferty, Paris, Calif., and JoAnn F. Fulweider, Iona, S.D.; and three grandchildren, Mike Crist, Jeff Smalley and Deanna Smalley.
Graveside services will be at 2 today at Mount Washington cemetery.
CAROL S. WILLIAMS
Carol Sue Williams, 59, Hardin, Mo., died Wednesday, Feb. 19, 1997, at Shirkey Leisure Acres Nursing Home, Richmond, Mo.
Mrs. Williams was born Oct. 16, 1937, in Hardin. She had worked at Shirkey Leisure Acres Nursing Home before retiring. She had also worked at Olin Manufacturing in Independence for 11 years. She was a member of the Hardin First Baptist Church. She was a graduate of the Hardin Central High School.
Her survivors include a son, Roger Williams, Cameron, Mo.; a daughter, Janet Gibbs, Independence; four brothers, C.O. Halterman, Raymore, Mo., Richard Halterman, Hardin, Jack Halterman, Richmond, and Bill Halterman, Raymore; three sisters, Pat Ritchie, Richmond, Evelyn Brown, Kansas City, and Janice Anderson, Springfield, Mo.; three grandchildren, Jill Gibbs, Abby Williams and Ashley Williams.
Services will be 1:30 p.m. Saturday at the Thurman Funeral Home, Richmond. Burial will be in Hardin cemetery. Friends may call from 7 to 8 tonight at the funeral home. The family suggests memorial contributions to the Hardin cemetery Association.
GARY COSTIN
Gary Costin, 62, Kansas City, North, died Friday, May 16, 1997, at North Kansas City Memorial Hospital.
Mr.Costin was born Aug. 1, 1934. He was a mail carrier for the Raytown Post Office until 1964. He had raced modified race cars and was a Korean War veteran.
His survivors include one daughter, Vickey Davis, Buena Park, Calif.; one son, Gary M. Costin, Independence; two sisters, Joann Lewis, Oak Grove; Joyce Smith, Blue Springs; and three grandchildren, Shane Davis, Heather Davis, and Keri Costin.
Services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Royer Funeral Home, Oak Grove.Burial will be in Oak Grove cemetery. Friends may call from 7 to 8 tonight at the chapel.
JOHN J. DUNKLE
John J. Dunkle, 80, Independence, died Saturday, May 17, 1997, at Columbia Independence Regional Health Center.
Mr. Dunkle was born April 5, 1917, in Girard, Kan., and had lived in Independence since 1941. He was a general storage keeper for the Lake City Army Ammunition Plant for 32 years, retiring in 1979. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Independence.
His survivors include his wife, Mildred A. Dunkle of the home; one daughter, Cheryl L. Dunkle, Rochester, Mich.; and one sister, Eula Maxine Long, Parsons, Kan.
Services will be 1 p.m. Tuesday at D.W. Newcomer`s Sons Noland Road Chapel. Burial will be in Woodlawn cemetery. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 tonight at the Chapel. The family suggests contributions to the American Heart Association.
KATHERINE L. EPPERSON
Katherine L. Epperson, 85, Independence, died Saturday, May 17, 1997, at Columbia Independence Regional Health Center.
Mrs. Epperson was born May 10, 1912, in Atlanta, Mo., and lived in Macon County, Mo., before moving to Independence in 1964. She was a teacher for 37 years, having taught at various schools in Macon County and at Bryant Elementary School in Independence for 11 years before retiring in 1975. She received a bachelor`s degree with honors and a master`s degree from Northeast Missouri State University, Kirksville. She was a member of Mount Vernon Primitive Baptist Church in Kansas City, and Kappa Delta Pi and the Cardinal Key at Northeast.She was also a member of the American Association of University Women, the local, state and National Retired Teacher`s associations and the Mary Paxton Study Class. She was a freelance writer, with articles published in many newspapers and magazines, and was a member of the Missouri Writers Guild. She was preceded in death by her husband, A.J. Epperson in 1962.
Her survivors include two sons, Robert F. Epperson, Baton Rouge, La., and D. Craig Epperson, Spencerport, N.Y.; one daughter, Sharon J. Epperson, Ramstein, Germany; and three grandchildren, Robert F. Epperson Jr., Laura Epperson and Martha Epperson.
Services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at D.W. Newcomer`s Sons Noland Road Chapel. Graveside services will be 4 p.m. Tuesday at Steel cemetery, Atlanta, Mo. Friends may call from 9:30 to 11 a.m. Tuesday at the chapel. The family suggests contributions to your favorite charity.
PHILIP A. EVILSIZER
Philip Andrew "Flipper" Evilsizer, 21, Independence, died Saturday, May 17, 1997, in Independence.
Mr. Evilsizer was born March 17, 1976, in Kansas City and was a lifelong area resident. In 1990, he was instrumental in developing the Ozark Storm Band which toured the country for more than five years. He was the drummer. He attended the Grace Community Church in his youth.
His survivors include his parents, Glenda and Jim Carpenter, of the home; his father, Larry Evilsizer, and his fiancee, Amy Lynn Rose, both of Independence; two brothers, Brian D. Carpenter, Kansas City, and Parry L. Evilsizer of the home; four sisters, Elizabeth Ann Bromley, Independence, Rebecca Jean Mustain, Rocky Comfort, Mo., Lisa Jewell Wright, Anderson, Mo., and Tammie Lynn Hansen, Neosho, Mo.; his paternal grandmother, Jessie Marie Carpenter, Independence; several aunts and uncles; and seven nieces and nephews.
Services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Speaks Suburban Chapel. Burial will be in Oak Ridge Memory Gardens. Friends may call from 6 to 8 tonight at the chapel. The family suggests contributions to Mothers Against Drunk Driving.
E. LOUISE HUFFMAN
E. Louise Huffman, 83, Independence, died Friday, May 16, 1997, at Columbia Independence Regional Health Center.
Mrs. Huffman was born Aug. 4, 1913, in Kansas City and was a lifelong area resident. She was a bookkeeper for Leo Walker Flowers before she retired.
Her survivors include her husband, E.A. "Casey" Huffman, and one son, Gary, both of the home; one sister, Norma Buenemann, Blue Springs; two grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 tonight at the Speaks Suburban Chapel, cremation will follow. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the Shriners Childrens Burn Center.
JIM C. LAWSON
Jim C. Lawson, 74, Independence, died Friday, May 16, 1997, at the Medical Center of Independence.
Mr. Lawson was born May 6, 1923, in Batesville, Ark., and had lived in Independence the past 35 years. He retired from Montgomery Ward in 1985. He was a member of Carlisle Baptist Church and Mount Washington Masonic Lodge 614.
His survivors include his wife, Dovie Lawson of the home; one son, Larry Lawson, Lee`s Summit; one daughter, Anne Cole, Independence; three sisters, Murner Misenheimer, Little Rock, Ark., Vernece Green, Newark, Ark., and Betty Wheeler, Searcy, Ark.; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
Graveside services will be 1 p.m. Tuesday at Mount Washington cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of the George C. Carson & Sons Independence Chapel.
EDNA C. LEWIS
Edna C. Lewis, 97, Independence, died Friday, May 16, 1997, at the Independence Health Care Center.
Mrs. Lewis was born Jan. 24, 1900, in Ohio, and had lived in Independence the past 18 years. She was a member of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Her husband, Thomas G. Lewis, preceded her in death.
Her survivors include one daughter, Virginia Johns, Independence; and three grandsons.
Graveside services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Mound Grove cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of the Speaks Midtown Chapel.
ALTA A. O`NEAL
Alta Ann O`Neal, 93, Chillicothe, Mo., formerly of Independence, died Saturday, May 17, 1997, at Hedrick Medical Center, Chillicothe.
Mrs. O`Neal was born on March 13, 1904, in Holt, Mo., and lived in Independence before moving to Chillicothe in 1990. She retired from Montgomery Wards in 1968 after 18 years as a supervisor for the phone order sales department.She was a member of the Immanuel Baptist Church in Independence. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ervin O`Neal.
Her survivors include one brother and sister-in-law, Hubert and Claudene Adams, North Kansas City; a sister-in-law, Betty Davis, Independence; three nephews, Rex Adams, Claude Adams, Jr. and Charles Adams; three nieces, Sandy Romines, Lucille Stallman and Terry Corsentino; and numerous great-nephews and nieces; and great-great-nephews and nieces.
Services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at D.W. Newcomer`s Sons Floral Hills Chapel, Kansas City. Burial will be in Floral Hills Memorial Gardens, Kansas City. JOHN F. ZWINGLE
John F. Zwingle, 93, Independence, died Saturday, May 17, 1997, at his home.
Mr. Zwingle was born June 14, 1903, in McMinville, Tenn., and had lived in Independence for the past 65 years. He retired from Tension Envelope Corp. in 1978. He was a member of St. Luke`s United Church of Christ.
His survivors include his wife, Ethel Zwingle, and one daughter, Frances Heman, both of Independence; two sisters, Nadine Phillips, San Angelo, Texas, and Willie Etta VanSchuyver, Duncan, Okla.; one brother, Earl Zwingle, Vinita, Okla.; two granddaughters, Linda Hedges and Lee Ann Sporn; and three great-grandchildren.
Services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at the George C. Carson & Sons Independence Chapel. Burial will be in Salem cemetery. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 tonight at the chapel.
JAMES ALLEN DUVALL and DENISE DUVALL
James Allen and Denise Duvall, Independence, died July 16, 1998, at their home.
Dr. Duvall was born in Toledo, Ohio, and was a veteran of the United States Marine Corps and the U.S. Air Force. He had been a warehouse manager for Martin & Brower Trucking, where he received numerous awards. He was a graduate of the Cleveland Chiropractic School.
Mrs. Duvall was born in Geneva, Switzerland. She had been a cosmetician for more than 40 years. She owned and operated Duvall`s Beauty Shop since 1978.
Survivors include one daughter, France Pruter, Kansas City, and two grandchildren. Dr. Duvall is also survived by one sister, Beverly Rees of Toledo, Ohio. Mrs. Duvall is also survived by one brother, Walter Beyeler and a sister Anne El Hakim, both of Geneva, Switzerland.
Services are 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Speaks Suburban Chapel with graveside services at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at Leavenworth National cemetery. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Monday at the chapel.
MARJORIE E. EADS
Marjorie E. Eads, 86, died Thursday, July 16, 1998, at the Baptist Home, Chillicothe, Mo.
She was born in Kansas City and lived in Kansas City and Independence. She was a floral arranger for many florists in the area and owned her own shop for a short period of time. She belonged to the Immanuel Baptist Church.
Survivors include several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services are 11 a.m. Tuesday at Newcomer`s Noland Road Chapel. Burial is in Mount Moriah cemetery. Friends may call from 10 a.m. until service time Tuesday at the chapel.
FLOSSIE F. HICKERSON
Flossie F. Hickerson, 96, Independence, died July 16, 1998, at Hidden Lake Care Center, Raytown.
Mrs. Hickerson was born Nov. 26, 1901, in Parkville, Mo. and lived in the Kansas City metropolitan area most of her life. She was preceded in death by her son George Arrowsmith in 1959.
Survivors include one daughter, Irene Chaney, Independence; four grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Survices are 2 p.m. Monday at the George C. Carson and Sons Independence Chapel. Burial is in Brooking cemetery. Friends may call from 1 p.m. Monday until service time at the chapel.
NICOLE L. HOUSKNECHT
Nicole Leanne Housknecht, 19, Independence, died Thursday, July 16, 1998, at her home.
Ms. Housknecht was born Oct. 27, 1978, in Independence and was a lifelong resident. She worked at Wal-mart. She was a member of the Church of Christ Temple Lot, a 1997 graduate of William Chrisman High School, and a member of the Blue and Gold Choir.
Survivors include her parents, Victor and Jody Housknecht; one sister, Jessica; one brother, Ryan, all of the home; her maternal grandparents, Richard and Velma Wheaton, Independence; paternal grandmother, Doris Housknecht, Arizona; and one niece.
Cremation. No services are scheduled at this time.
HELEN L. KENNEDY
Helen L. Kennedy, 83, Independence, died Wednesday, July 15, 1998, at Independence Regional Health Center.
She was born June 27, 1915, at Slater, Mo.
Survivors include four daughters, Shirley Manley, Mary White, Virginia Copeland, and Norma Lea Easley; one sister, Merle Perusich; one brother, Kenneth Braxdale; 22 grandchildren, 33 great-grandchildren, and nine great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services are 1 p.m. Monday at Charter Funerals/Blue Ridge Chapel, 5000 Blue Ridge Cutoff, Kansas City. Burial is in Mount Washington cemetery. Friends may call from noon until service time Monday at the chapel.
