Ivy M. James

Ivy M. James, 99, Independence, died Monday, March 5, 2001, at her home.

Mrs. James was born April 14, 1901, in Platte County, Mo. She was preceded in death by her husband, Clyde A. James, in 1968, and three sons, Kenneth E. James, Lester A. James and Melvin James.

Her survivors include her son, Straudie A. James, Independence; two daughters, Clydine James, Independence, and Barbara Richard and her husband, Barry; several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren.

Family graveside services were today at Mount Washington cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to American Cancer Society or Meals on Wheels.

Arrangements under the direction of George C. Carson and Sons Independence Chapel.

Frances B. Miller

Frances Brownfield Miller, 90, Independence, died Wednesday, March 7, 2001, at the Medical Center of Independence.

Mrs. Miller was born Nov. 6, 1910, in Greenwood, Mo., the daughter of Charley and Eliza Beal Brownfield. She graduated from Leešs Summit High School in 1928 and Warrensburg State Teacheršs College, Warrensburg, Mo. She taught at Crossroads School, Brush College, Union Point and Blue Springs. She married Quintus O. Miller on May 30, 1937, in Leešs Summit. Before returning to this area in 1998, she lived in Houston for 40 years, where she was a member of Bethany Christian Church. She was a life member of Order of Eastern Star in Leešs Summit. She was preceded in death by her husband, Quintus O. Miller, on Nov. 13, 1997; her brothers, Wade, Earl, Charley, and Allen Brownfield, and her sisters, Jessie Jennings, Hazel Schubert, Delaine Dugan and Mildred Shawhan.

Her survivors include her brother, Beal Brownfield, Leešs Summit; nieces Maxine LaFavor, Carson City, Nev., Geraldine Sebolt and Peggy Morris, Blue Springs, Sally Marshall, Naples, Fla., Susan Howell, Overland Park, Kan., Patricia Fuller, Wichita, Kan., and Martha Schooley, Kansas City; nephews David Brownfield, Blue Springs, and Don Schubert, Columbia, Mo.; and many great and great-great nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Saturday at the Langsford Funeral Home, Leešs Summit. Burial will be in Leešs Summit cemetery. Friends may call before the funeral at 1:30 p.m. Saturday. Memorial contributions can be made to Bethany Christian Church, 3223 Westheimer Road, Houston, Texas 77098-1092.

Rachel Oeser

Rachel Oeser, 93, Independence, died Wednesday, April 25, 2001, at the Independence Regional Health Center.

Mrs. Oeser was born Dec. 10, 1907, in El Dorado Springs, Mo., and lived most of her life in the Independence area. She was a member of the Walnut Park Congregation of the Community of Christ since 1927. She was a past Parent Teacher's Association president at McCoy Elementary School and a leader of the Girl Scouts Walnut Park troop. She was preceded in death by her husband, Fritz Christian Oeser, in 1973, a grandson, Kevin Skinner, and a great-grandson, Cody Skinner, both in 1998.

Her survivors include three daughters, Frances Easter and Kay Skinner, both of Independence, and Milda Lewis, Lamoni, Iowa; one son, Fritz C. Oeser Jr., St. Louis, Mo.; 10 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at the Speaks Suburban Chapel. Burial will be in Mound Grove cemetery. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 tonight at the chapel. The family suggests contributions to the charity of your choice.

Alice D. Butler

Alice Dean Butler, 59, Oak Grove, died Wednesday, April 25, 2001, at Independence Regional Health Center.

Mrs. Butler was born Oct. 21, 1941, in Oak Grove, the daughter of Jeff and Nadine Corn Reiss. She graduated from Raytown High School in 1959. She married Charles E. Butler on Feb. 27, 1959. She worked at Western Electric for 18 years and at Associated Basement of Blue Springs since 1988. She was involved with horses and horse shows her entire life. She was the helped get the Oak Grove Arena built. She served on the board of Blue & Gray Team Penning for several years. She was a member of the Youth Rodeo Club of Oak Grove and the Oak Grove Saddle Club. She was a Methodist. She was preceded in death by her father, Jeff Reiss.

Her survivors include her husband of 42 years, Charles Butler, of the home; a son, Charles S. Butler and his wife, Becky, Oak Grove; a daughter, Kathy L. Vick and her husband, Clint, Odessa; her mother, Nadine Reiss, Oak Grove; three grandchildren, Chance Owens, Jeff Butler and Heather Butler; and three step-grandchildren, Nikki Fox, Bobby Vick and Trenton Vick.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Saturday at the Royer Funeral Home in Oak Grove. She will be cremated. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the American Cancer Society.

Marie C. Cooper

Marie Calfas Cooper, 79, Independence, died Tuesday, April 24, 2001, at the Medical Center of Independence.

Mrs. Cooper was born July 9, 1921, in Kansas City. She was retired from Montgomery Ward. She was a member of Pebble Creek Assembly of God. She was preceded in death by her husband of 58 years, Wiley Cooper, and a son, Nick Cooper.

Her survivors include her daughter, Debbie Hutsell, and her husband, Jay; her son, Tom Cooper, and his wife, Loretta; a daughter-in-law, Barbara Cooper; a sister, Georgia Sousley; a brother, Tony Calfas; eight grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Funeral services were today at Sheil-Blackman Funeral Home. Burial was in Mount Washington cemetery.

Mildred C. Campbell

Mildred Claudine Campbell, 94, Wellington, Mo., died Sunday, Feb. 10, 2002, at the Lafayette Regional Health Center, Lexington, Mo.

Mrs. Campbell was born March 5, 1907, in Bates City, Mo., the daughter of Claude J. Herman and Flora Bell MacDonald Herman. On March 31, 1928, she married Earl C. Campbell in Lexington. He preceded her in death on Jan. 5, 1994. She taught elementary school in the Pleasant Prairie, Ish, Happy Hollow, Bates City and Oak Grove (all in Missouri) districts, retiring in 1965. She attended Central Missouri State Teacher's College, Warrensburg. She was a member of Wellington Chapter of American Association of Retired Persons, the Happy Hollow Club and the Oak Grove High School Alumni class of 1926. She was a member of the First Christian Church of Odessa and was active in her Sunday school class and the Christian Women's Fellowship group. She moved her membership to Odessa from the Christian-Methodist Church, Bates City, when it closed.

Her survivors include a nephew and spouse, Don and Mary Ann Campbell, Wellington; a niece, Donna Fortune, Wellington; two great-nephews and spouse, Jeff and Christi Campbell, Warrensburg, and Brian Campbell, Fort Worth, Texas; and a great-niece, Leigh Ann Fortune, Fayette, Mo.

Services will be 1 p.m. Tuesday at the First Christian Church, Odessa. Burial will be in Bates City cemetery. Friends may call from noon to 1 p.m. at the church. Memorial contributions may be given to the First Christian Church music department.

Donna M. Edge

Donna Mae Edge, 51, Hermitage, Mo., died Saturday, Feb. 9, 2002, at Christian Healthcare in Hermitage.

She was born Dec. 17, 1950, in Urbana, Mo., the daughter of Marvin and Iona (Hooper) Edge. She was reared in the Urbana area and attended Skyline High School. After her schooling, she married and moved to Independence. She spent many years living in Preston, Mo., and Independence. She worked for General Motors for 10 years until they closed that facility. She worked a short time for CTI and then opened her own beauty shop, The Hair Shack, which she owned and operated for more than 10 years. She enjoyed taking care of animals, reading, spending time at the lake and whitewater rafting. She was preceded in death by her father, Marvin Edge.

Her survivors include her mother, Iona Fisher, Nemo, Mo.; a daughter, Melissa Fisher, Independence; three brothers, Mike Edge, Nemo, Pat Edge and wife, Patricia, Hermitage, and Sam Fisher, Nemo; and a sister, Sherri Edge, Nemo.

Graveside services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Nemo cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of the Cantlon Otterness Funeral Home, Urbana.

Courtney E. Frisby

Courtney E. Frisby, 95, Raytown, died Saturday, Feb. 9, 2002, at her home.

Mrs. Frisby was born Feb. 8, 1907, in Warrensburg, Mo., and had lived in Raytown for the last 40 years. She was a graduate of Central Missouri State University, Warrensburg. She was a teacher at William Chrisman High School until she married W.C. "Clay" Frisby. She was a member of the Order of Eastern Star Mount Washington Chapter. She was a master bridge player and was active in local golf and bowling teams. She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, George and Lottie Smarr, and her brothers, Kenneth, Harold and George Smarr.

Her survivors include her nieces, Rose Jean Collins and Betty Tindall; and nephews, Donald Smarr, Ray Smarr, Billy Smarr, Arthur Welch and Robert Welch.

Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Mount Moriah cemetery, Kansas City. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contribution to the Shriner Hospital burn unit. Arrangements are under the direction of the George C. Carson & Sons Independence Chapel.

Patricia L. Heffern

Patricia Leona (O'Riley) Heffern, 63, Lee's Summit, formerly of Independence, died Saturday, Feb. 9, 2002, at North Kansas City Hospital.

Mrs. Heffern was born May 21, 1938, in Kansas City, the daughter of James and Laura Williams O'Riley. She married John Heffern on Nov. 16, 1957, in Kansas City. She worked for Southwestern Bell/AT&T for 34 years, retiring in 1993. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, one brother, Don, a sister, Dorothy, and a grandson, Shawn.

Her survivors include her stepfather, Arthur Moore, El Dorado Springs, Mo., a daughter, Laurie Heffern, Lee's Summit; three sons and daughters-in-law, John and Cindy Heffern, Lee's Summit, Terry and Diane Heffern, Blue Springs, and Jim and Becky Heffern, Grain Valley; a brother and sister-in-law, James and Darlene O'Riley, Blue Springs; and seven grandchildren, Brooke and Brad Lungstrom, and Stephanie, Courtney, Terry, Brian, Kristen, Alexandra and Errin Heffern.

Services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at D.W. Newcomer's Sons Floral Hills Chapel, Kansas City. Burial will follow in Floral Hills East cemetery, Lee's Summit. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the chapel. Memorials may be made to the American Diabetes Association, 1316 Parkade Blvd. P.O. Box 1013, Columbia, Mo. 65205.

Samuel L. "Sam" Howerton

Samuel L. "Sam" Howerton, 68, Odessa, died Saturday, Feb. 9, 2002, at the Meyer Care Center in Higginsville, Mo.

Mr. Howerton was born March 13, 1933, in Osceola, Mo., the son of Lemiul A. and Anna M. (Humphrey) Howerton. He married Mary L. Leonard on Jan. 22, 1952, in El Dorado Springs, Mo. He was an independent truck driver, owner/operator. He also worked for Lake City Army Ammunition Plant and operated heavy equipment, working out of Local 101 Operator Engineers Union Hall. He was an Army veteran of the Korean War, a member of Mount Hope Masonic Lodge 476 in Odessa and a former member of the Martha Chapter of the Order of Eastern Star in Odessa. He was preceded in death by five brothers, James, Gene, Nelson "Doc", Bill and Ed Howerton.

His survivors include his wife, Mary L. Howerton, of the home; two sons and daughters-in-law, Lonnie and Patty Howerton, Derby, Kan., and Ronnie and Donna Howerton, Odessa; a daughter and son-in-law, Connie and Jeff Sanders, Mayview, Mo.; six grandchildren, Jennifer, Sarah, Kelly and Kristy Howerton, and Sammi and Tyler Sanders; and a great-granddaughter, Lilly Howerton.

Services will be 9:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Ralph O. Jones Chapel, Odessa. Burial will be in the Missouri Veteran's cemetery, Higginsville. Friends may call from 7 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the chapel, with a Masonic service at 6:30 p.m. The family suggests contributions to the Mount Hope Masonic Lodge Relief Fund.

Milton G. Jensen

Milton George Jensen, 90, Independence, died Saturday, Feb. 9, 2002, at his home.

Mr. Jensen was born Dec. 13, 1911, in Kansas City. He moved to Independence in 1938, when he opened the Eight Gables Tavern and Filling Station. Shortly afterward he opened Mitt Jensen Tourist Court, which he ran until the 1970s. During World War II, he worked at Lake City Army Ammunition Plant. From 1954 to 1968, he operated 24 Highway Kiddieland. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church of Independence, and was a past president of the Independence Eastview Lions Club, where he had been an active member since 1971. He was preceded in death by his parents, George William and Agnes Elizabeth Jensen.

His survivors include his wife of 63 years, Clarice Jensen; two sons and daughters-in-law, George W. and Vicky Jensen, and Don and Steffie Billings; grandchildren, Christina and Clarice Jensen, Kathy Billings, Vicky and Dave Campbell, and Mindy and Robert Hooks; and great-grandchildren, Gus and Sam Campbell, and Brandy and Ashley Hooks.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Independence. Burial will be in Woodlawn cemetery. Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at George C. Carson & Sons Independence Chapel. Russell W. Long Sr.

Russell W. Long Sr., 73, Independence, died Saturday, Feb. 9, 2002, at Independence Regional Health Center.

Retired SFC Long was born March 13, 1928, in Independence and was a lifelong area resident. He was a 1947 graduate of William Chrisman High School. He worked for General Motors for 41 years, retiring as a salvage leadsman in 1989, and was a member of United Auto Workers Local 31. He was a member of the Missouri Army National Guard and a charter member with the 129th Field Artillery, Battery D for 36 1/2 years. He was a member of American Legion Post 21 and the International Order of Odd Fellows, Sloan Lodge. He was the first of three generations of Boy Scout Troop 226 members and a Tribe of Mic-O-Say member with his name "Big Charging Bull Moose." He helped his son and grandson become Eagle Scouts. His son Rusty was "Charging Bull Moose" and his grandson Tim was "Little Charging Bull Moose." He was a member of the Community of Christ Special Ministries congregation and supported the Patient Advisory Committee at Truman Medical Center-Lakewood. He was preceded in death by his son, Rusty W. Long Jr., on Feb. 3, 2002.

His survivors include his wife of 49 years, Bettye Long, of the home; a daughter and son-in-law, Kris and Frank Todd, Independence; a sister, Dorothy Warner, Wichita, Kan.; and two grandsons, Frank Todd Jr. and Tim Todd.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Speaks Midtown Chapel. Burial will be in Oak Ridge Memory Gardens. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday at the chapel.

Randall "Randy" J. Lyday

Randall "Randy" Jay Lyday, 48, High Ridge, Mo., died Sunday, Feb. 3, 2002, at St. Anthony's Medical Center.

Mr. Lyday was born in Kansas City. He was a principal.

His survivors include his wife, Kathleen Ann (Steenrod) Lyday, of the home; his children, Shane and Tracey and Travis Lyday; a grandson, Gavin Lyday; his parents, Bobbie and Deloris Lyday; brothers and sisters, Mike and Patti Lyday, Karen Easter, Deno Lyday and Eva and Jim Hammond; his mother-in-law and father-in-law, Francis and Vesta Steenrod; and sisters-in-law, Nancy Dodd and Kathy Steenrod.

Services were Feb. 7 at the Kutis Affton Chapel, St. Louis.

Wayne S. McDole

Wayne Stuart McDole, 82, Weaubleau, Mo., formerly of Independence, died Friday, Feb. 8, 2002, at the Big Spring Care Center, Humansville, Mo.

Mr. McDole was born June 8, 1919, in Republic, Wash. His parents were Robert Alexander and Clara Valate Clark McDole. He grew up in Tucson, Ariz. He served in the Army Air Corps during World War II, repairing aircraft in England. He was an elder in the Community of Christ Church. He served as pastor to the Warsaw, Mo., congregation for five years. He earned a bachelor's degree in pharmacy from Kansas City University. He owned Baumgarner's Pharmacy in Odessa from 1949 to 1954. He worked at Denton Drugs in Independence for 13 years. During that time, he further provided for his family by working at several other Independence pharmacies. Later he worked at the Jackson County Hospital, where he was the head of the pharmacy department. He retired from the Independence Sanitarium and Hospital on Jan. 1, 1984. He then opened and ran the pharmacy at the Sac Osage Hospital in Osceola, Mo., where he continued his career until the age of 73.

His survivors include his wife of 54 years, Frances Jane Tomlinson McDole, Weaubleau; son and daughter-in-law, Gary L. and Mary F. McDole, Lee's Summit, son, Larry J. McDole, Anaheim, Calif.; daughters and sons-in-law, R. Lynette and Gene Flaharty, Independence, Gayle E. and Donald J. Calder, Holden, Mo., and Lori D. McDole, Independence; brothers and sisters-in-law, Robert A. and Irene McDole, Prescott, Ariz., Glenn L. and Ada McDole, Independence; four granddaughters; a grandson; and four great-grandchildren.

Services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Speaks Midtown Chapel. Burial will be in Mound Grove cemetery. Friends may call from 1 to 2 p.m. Tuesday at the chapel. A memorial service will be at 1:30 p.m. March 3 at the Humansville (Mo.) Community of Christ Church. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the Community of Christ Temple Endowment Fund.

Josephine M. Smith

Josephine M. Smith, 90, Independence, died Thursday, Feb. 7, 2002, at Rosewood Health Center, Independence.

Mrs. Smith was born on Oct. 11, 1911, to George B. and Bertha Anderson in Boise, Idaho. She had lived in this area for the past 30 years. She had been an accounting supervisor with The Jones Store Co., retiring in 1962. She was a member of the Community of Christ Stone Church congregation. She was preceded in death by her husband, Everett L. Smith Sr. in 1987.

Her survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Everett L. and Patricia Smith, Madison, Wis.; a daughter and son-in-law, Loraine and Lewis Burke, Poquoson, Va.; four grandchildren, Kristin Ann Smith, Kevin Randal Smith, Bradley Lewis Burke and Kimberly Sue Braden; and three great-grandchildren, Tristan Tate Smith, Autumn Marie Braden and Alexander Guiness Braden.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at The Groves Community Room. Burial will be in Mound Grove cemetery. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 tonight at the Speaks Suburban Chapel and also from 9 to 10:15 a.m. Tuesday at The Groves. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to The Groves.
