Marcella C. Phillips

Marcella Celia Phillips, 71, Odessa, died Monday, Aug. 26, 2002, at the Medical Center of Independence.

Mrs. Phillips was born May 18, 1931, in Kansas City, the daughter of Norman John and Lyda Gladys (Bushong) Robinson. She married Paul Edward Phillips on Aug. 3, 1950. She worked for Standard Oil Co. in the Kansas City office and gave private piano lessons in her home for many years. She was a 1948 graduate of Northeast High School in Kansas City, where she was the 1948 Kansas City Inter Scholastic League Diving Champion, and played trumpet in the marching band and the piano for the swing band and orchestra. She was a member of the Kansas City Chapter of the Multiple Sclerosis Society. She was a past member of Bales Baptist Church in Kansas City and Raytown First Baptist Church, where she played piano for Sunday school and many church events and activities. She was preceded in death by a sister, Norma Jean Higbee.

Her survivors include her husband, Paul Phillps, of the home; a daughter and son-in-law, Belinda and Ted Haase, Independence; a son, Paul A. Phillips, Tampa, Fla.; two grandchildren, Paula and Roger Nowak Matthew and Chandra Tuttle; a sister, Carolyn Pierce, Hawthorne, Fla.; and a great-granddaughter, Alannah Nowak.

Services will be 2 p.m. Friday at the Ralph O. Jones Chapel, Odessa. Burial will be in Greenton cemetery, Odessa. Friends may call from 1 to 2 p.m. Friday at the chapel. The family suggests contributions to the Multiple Sclerosis Society.

John P. Reed

John P. Reed, 71, Independence, died Tuesday, Aug. 27, 2002, at his home.

Mr. Reed was born Aug. 23, 1931, in Sullivan, Mo., and had lived in this area since 1959. He had been an inspector for Ford Motor Co. for 30 years, retiring in 1989. He was a Baptist. He was a member of the Sugar Creek VFW and United Auto Workers Local 249. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War. He was preceded in death by a son, Bobby H. Reed in 1969.

His survivors include his wife, Deloris Reed of the home; two sons, John E. Reed, and Michael D. and his wife, Angelia Reed, two daughters, Vicky L. and husband Rick Capek, and Debby K. and husband Ron Wiseman, all of Independence; two sisters, Vernis Frye and Sherry Brown, both of Sullivan, Mo.; 12 grandchildren, David Reed, Becky Lakey, Jim Capek, Sharlene Greathouse, Krystal Jacobs, Venessa Capek, Jason Confer, J.J. Capek, Chasity Wiseman, Richard Wiseman, Jamie Capek, Chris Capek and 19 great-grandchildren.

Graveside services will be at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Six Mile cemetery. Friends may call from noon to service time Thursday at the D.W. Newcomer's Noland Road Chapel. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the American Cancer Society or to Kansas City Hospice.

Reba A. Scott

Reba A. Scott, 74, Sunrise Beach, Mo., formerly of Independence, died Monday, Aug. 26, 2002, at Baptist Medical Center in Kansas City.

Mrs. Scott was born Nov. 22, 1927, in Kansas City. She retired from Bendix/Allied Signal after 32 years of service and was a member of IAM Union Local 314. She was preceded in death by a son, Leslie Prater Jr., her parents, Clyde and Lela Rutherford, four brothers and three sisters.

Her survivors include her husband, David L. Scott, of the home; two daughters, Lela A. Mastin, Peculiar, Mo., and Dinky Lombardi, Lee's Summit; a stepdaughter, Vickie Stephens, Chaptico, Md.; a stepson, David Allen Scott, Higginsville, Mo.; one sister, Helen Banner, Kansas City; a brother, Dee Rutherford, Grandview; eight grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

Services will be 1 p.m. Friday at the George C. Carson and Sons Independence Chapel. Burial will be in Brooking cemetery, Raytown. Friends may call from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the chapel.

Paul P. Webb

Paul P. Webb, 78, Independence, died Saturday, Aug. 24, 2002, following complications of heart surgery at the University of Kansas Medical Center.

Mr. Webb was born Jan. 30, 1924, in Grain Valley, the son of Claiborne and Grace Webb. He was a 1942 graduate of Grain Valley High School and was a sergeant in the Army Air Force with the 38th Bomber Group during World War II. He worked for the Ford Motor Co. for 34 years, retiring in 1986. He was a Christian and a member of Oakland Methodist Church in Buckner, where he was superintendent of Sunday school and where he taught Sunday school. He was sexton of Oakland cemetery for many years and was an avid bowler and bowled on the Wednesday league at Oakwood Bowl in Oak Grove. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, five sisters, and his wife, Ethel P. Webb.

His survivors include his wife, Leola Webb, of the home; two sons and daughters-in-law, David and Linda Webb, Blue Springs, and Mark and Johnna Webb, Oak Grove; three stepchildren and their spouses, Charles and JoAnn Russell, Oak Grove, Dennis and Donna Beaderstadt, St. Joseph, and William and Mary Czeschin, Independence; two sisters, Frances Grote, Bates City, and Esther Greishaber, Raytown; three grandchildren, Kristi and Devon Webb and Cheri Jones; five step grandchildren, Scott and Mark McCormick, and Amy, Sarah and Russell Czeschin; and a great-granddaughter, Tijen Jones.

Services were today at the church. Burial was in Oakland cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the Oakland Methodist Church, 30701 E. Truman Road, Buckner, Mo. 64015. Arrangements were under the direction of D.W. Newcomer's Sons Noland Road Chapel, Independence.

JUDITH A. BYERLEY

Judith A. Byerley, 54, Independence, died Thursday, Dec. 11, 1997, at her home.

Mrs. Byerley was born Oct. 30, 1943, in Independence, and was a lifelong Independence resident. She was a salesperson for Rhodes Furniture and a member of the Northern Boulevard Methodist Church.

Her survivors include a daughter, Christine A. Byerley, Lawrence, Kan.; a son, Dave Byerley, Independence; and a brother, William L. Smith, Indianapolis.

Memorial services will be at 7:30 tonight at the George C. Carson & Sons Independence Chapel; cremation. Friends may call from 6:30 to 7:30 tonight at the chapel. The family suggests contributions to the Federation of The Blind or your favorite charity.

DAISY L. CAPPS

Daisy LaDora Mills Capps, 82, Independence, died Friday, Dec. 12, 1997, at Columbia Independence Regional Health Center.

Mrs. Capps was born April 28, 1915, in Amsterdam, Mo., and lived in Nevada, Mo., before moving to Independence 30 years ago. She was a Baptist and attended the First Baptist Church of Independence. She was also a member of Fraternal Order of Eagles 385. Her husband, Albert F. Mills, died in 1958. Her survivors include four daughters, Dorothy Goodrich, Independence, Polly Shumaker, Nevada, Barbara Duran, Pittsburg, Kan., and Grace Atha, Mulvane, Kan.; a sister, Maggie Bovicka, Lawrence, Kan.; a brother, Floyd Caylor, Denver; 23 grandchildren; and 37 great-grandchildren.

Services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Geroge C. Carson & Sons Independence Chapel. Burial will be in Oak Lawn cemetery, LaCygne, Kan. Friends may call from 6 to 7:30 tonight at the chapel.

JOSEPH ELKINS

Joseph Elkins, 83, Independence, died Saturday, Dec. 13, 1997, at the Rosewood Health Care Center.

Mr. Elkins was born March 4, 1914, near Lexington, Mo., and had lived in independence since 1984. Before his retirement in 1984, he was a textile engineer. He was a lifelong member of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and was an elder in the Summit Grove congregation. He was a volunteer counselor at Columbia Independence Regional Health Center, and a volunteer guide for the RLDS Temple.

His survivors include a daughter, Cynthia Elkins, Charlotte, N.C., and a sister, Edith Margaree, Independence.

Services will be 11:15 a.m. Wednesday at the Speaks Suburban Chapel. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday at the chapel.In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the Summit Grove RLDS church.

MILDRED M. LANE

Mildred May Lane, 88, Blue Springs, died Friday, Dec. 12, 1997, at the Monterey Park Nursing Center.

Mrs. Lane was born Dec. 21, 1908, and had lived in this area for many years. She was a retail clerk for Parkview Drug Store for more than 25 years, retiring in 1973. She was a member of the Episcopal Church.

Her survivors include a daughter, Dolores Gottschall, Kansas City; a granddaughter, Deborah K. Edgar; a step granddaughter, Mary Ann Woelfer; four great-grandchildren, Lory, Sheldon, Kathy and Bobby; and a great-great-granddaughter, Gwendolyn Faline.

Services were today at D.W. Newcomer`s Sons Noland Road Chapel. Burial was in Floral Hills Memorial Gardens, Kansas City.

MARILYN MORTIMORE

Marilyn Holmes Davison Mortimore, 75, Independence, died Saturday, Dec. 13, 1997, at the Rosewood Health Care Center. Mrs. Mortimore was born Feb. 21, 1922, in Oneida, N.Y. She was a secretary in the patent office of IBM in San Jose, Calif., for 20 years, retiring in 1983.Upon her retirement, she moved to Independence. She was a volunteer for the RLDS Temple and at Columbia Independence Regional Health Center. She was a member of the RLDS Stone Church congregation. Her husband, James E. Mortimore, died in 1978.

Her survivors include a son, Evan James Mortimore, Sunnyvale, Calif.; a daughter, Jeri Lynne Shumate, Vancouver, Wash.; a sister, Eleanor Switts, Falling Waters, W.Va.; two stepbrothers, Carl Mesle, Independence, and Richard Mesle, Blue Springs; and two granddaughters, Lauren Shumate and Briana Shumate. Memorial services will be 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Speaks Suburban Chapel; cremation. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the United Parkinson`s Foundation, 833 W. Washington, Chicago, Ill. 60607.

LYMAN L. THURMON

Lyman L. Thurmon, 74, Independence, died Saturday, Dec. 13, 1997, at his home.

Mr. Thurmon was born April 22, 1923, in Lexington, Mo. He was a farmer and was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 134. His wife, Geneva Thurmon died in 1973.

His survivors include two sons, Alan Thurmon and Evan Thurmon, both of Independence; a companion, Helen Howell; a brother, James Thurmon, Arp, Texas; and five sisters, Nadine Boman, Buckner, Velma Wright, Raymore, Mo., Laura Vanarsdall, Sibley, Lorna Finkemeier, Wellington, Mo., and Lois Culberton, Blue Springs.

Services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Webb-Freer Funeral Home, Blue Springs. Burial will be in Buckner cemetery. Friends may call from 6 to 8 tonight at the funeral home.

MILDRED C. ZUGELTER

Mildred C. Zugelter, 90, Lee`s Summit, died Saturday, Dec. 13, 1997, at the John Knox Village Care Center, Lee`s Summit.

Mrs. Zugelter was born Sept. 28, 1907, in Oak Grove. She was a secretary and accountant for several insurance brokers before working for Boatmen`s Bank in Raytown, where she retired in 1972.

Her survivors include a son, Clarence Zugelter, and two grandsons, Allen Zugelter and David Zugelter, all of Lee`s Summit.

Private graveside services will be in Oak Grove cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to Powell Gardens, 1609 N.W. U.S. Highway 50, Kingsville, Mo. 64061. Arrangements are under the direction of Royer Funeral Home, Oak Grove.

WENDELA L. BOWSER

Wendela Louise Bowser, 81, Hot Springs Village, Ark., died Wednesday, Oct. 15, 1997, at St. Joseph`s Regional Health Center.

Mrs. Bowser was born Nov. 10, 1915, in Kansas City. She was a homemaker and was a member of the Presbyterian Kirk in the Pines Church, P.E.O., Chapter CH, Hot Springs Village Women`s Club I, Presbyterian Women Kirk and Phi Beta Kappa.

Her survivors include her husband, Dr. John F. Bowser, Hot Springs Village; two sons, John George Bowser, Kansas City, and James Galen Bowser, Traverse City, Mich.; three daughters, Alice Roberta Hickey, Pittsburgh, Ann Louise Stadelhofer, Hot Springs Village, and Ruth Marie Bowser, Aurora, Colo.; a brother, John Underwood Bott, Hot Springs Village; eight grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Memorial services were Monday at the church. Arrangements were under the direction of the Cedar Vale Funeral Home and cemetery, Hot Springs Village.

MICHAEL R. ERWIN

Michael Roy Erwin, 92, Lee`s Summit, died Tuesday, Oct. 21, 1997, at the Lee`s Summit Hospital.

Mr. Erwin was born Feb. 6, 1905, in Longton, Kan., and lived in Kansas and Florida before moving to Grandview in 1993. He moved to Lee`s Summit earlier this year. He was a truck driver in Florida before he retired. He was preceded in death by a son, Michael Erwin in 1980.

His survivors include his wife, Inez Pearl Erwin, Fairhope, Ala.; a son, David Auer Erwin, Tulsa, Okla.; a daughter, Patricia Fierst, Lee`s Summit; a sister, Joyce Jacobs, Holiday, Fla.; five grandchildren; and a great-granddaughter.

Memorial services will be 7:30 p.m. Thursday at the Speaks Suburban Chapel. The family suggests contributions to the Alzheimer`s Association or the Salvation Army.

VIOLA FAUSTLIN

Viola Faustlin, 84, Independence, died Tuesday, Oct. 21, 1997, at the Independence Manor Care Center.

Mrs. Faustlin had lived in Independence most of her life. She was a clerk for the Kansas City School District for 22 years, retiring in 1978. Earlier she was cafeteria manager for Fairmount Elementary School. She was a member of the Fairmount Christian Church of Independence, Joy Belles and the Women`s Christian Fellowship Class. She had been active in the PTA, Boy Scouts of America and various neighborhood activities.

Her survivors include a son, Norman A. Faustlin, Lee`s Summit; three daughters, Muriel Woods, Independence, Hazel Faustlin, Grain Valley, and Shirley Mullikin, Bonne Terre, Mo.; 16 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

Services will be 11 a.m. Friday at D.W. Newcomer`s Sons Noland Road Chapel. Burial will be in Mount Washington cemetery. Friends may call from 10 to 11 a.m. Friday at the chapel. The family suggests contributions to the Joy Belles of Fairmount Christian Church.

DOROTHY M. McKELVEY

Dorothy Margaret Cochran McKelvey, 84, Independence, died Monday, Oct. 20, 1997, at her home.

Mrs. McKelvey was born July 23, 1913, in New Kensington, Pa., and lived in Massillon, Ohio, Florida, Canton, Ohio, and Washington, D.C., before returning to Massillon. She moved to Independence after her retirement. She attended St. Petersburg (Fla.) Junior College, and completed her bachelor`s degree at Malone College in Canton.She worked in the fingerprint division of the FBI for several years in Washington, D.C., and then taught fourth grade in Massillon at both Lincoln and Whittier schools. Earlier she worked for the Eaton Manufacturing Co. She became a member of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Massillon in 1950, having been active in the women`s department there, as well as having served as a choir member and teacher. She was also a member of the evening section of the Massillon Women`s Club, and the American Association of University Women. After she moved to Independence, she became a member of the RLDS Stone Church congregation, and was active in church activities, including Gather Inn. She maintained her membership in AAUW, and was a member of the Independence Retired Teachers Association, Sierra Club and the Nature Conservancy. She was preceded in death by her husband, Boyd Elliott McKelvey in 1956.

Her survivors include two daughters, Kathleen Anne Anderson, Tulsa, Okla., and Eileen Joanne McKelvey, Independence; a son, James Boyd McKelvey, Independence; a brother, Albert Cochran, Brewster, Ohio; three grandchildren, Max, Allison and Emily; a great-grandson, Zachary; and many nieces and nephews.

Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Speaks Midtown Chapel. Private services and burial will follow at a later date in Ohio. Flowers are appreciated, or memorial contributions may be made to the Gift of Hope Hospice or The Temple Fund.

ROBERT C. "BOB" STOKES

Robert C. "Bob" Stokes, 68, Independence, died Monday, Oct. 20, 1997, at Trinity Lutheran Hospital in Kansas City.

Mr. Stokes was born Jan. 31, 1929, in Flemington, Mo. He served in the Navy and retired from IBM after 34 years of service. He was a member of Norfleet Baptist Church and Masonic Lodge 76.

His survivors include his wife of 48 years, Glenda Stokes; three daughters, Sheila Stokes-Begley, Sonya Stokes and Sharon Stokes-McKee; his father, Clyde Stokes; a sister, Joyce Krasser; a grandson, Robert McKee; two step-granddaughters; two great-granddaughters; a niece; three nephews; a great-niece; and three great-nephews.

Services will be 10 a.m. Thursday at the Hinton-Gibson Funeral Home, Raytown. Burial will be in Brooking cemetery, Raytown. Friends may call from 6 to 7:30 tonight at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the church.
