KAREN S. TURNER

Karen Sue Turner, 31, Eudora, Kan., formerly of Buckner, died Monday, Oct. 20, 1997, at Lawrence (Kan.) Memorial Hospital.

Miss Turner was born Dec. 30, 1965, in Kansas City, grew up in Buckner, and moved to Lawrence in 1977. She was a member of Six Mile Baptist Church in Buckner.

Her survivors include her companion, Mike Gibler, Eudora; her parents, Kenneth and Judy Turner, Lawrence; and two sisters, Coni Case, Buckner, and Cindy Wingeback, Eudora.

Services will be 2 p.m. Saturday at the Royer Funeral Home, Grain Valley. Burial will be in Oak Grove cemetery. Visitation will be from noon to 9 p.m. Thursday and 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday, with family receiving friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at the Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home, Lawrence. The family will also receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m. Saturday at the Royer Funeral Home.

JOHN W. UPP

John W. Upp, 65, Blue Springs, formerly of Independence, died Monday, Oct. 20, 1997, at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Kansas City.

Mr. Upp was born Sept. 6, 1932, in Independence and was a lifelong Independence and Blue Springs area resident. He was a self-employed general contractor. He was an Army veteran of the Korean War, and a member of McDonald Lodge 324, A.F.&.A.M. and Ararat Shrine Temple in Kansas City. He received a bachelor`s degree from the University of Missouri-Columbia.

His survivors include two daughters, Sheila Marie Upp, Grain Valley, and Julie Irene Upp Woolery, Independence; his companion, Debby Bledsoe of the home; and three grandchildren, Ryan Dale Warren, Linda Gale and Adam Marquix.

Services will be 2 p.m. Saturday at the George C. Carson & Sons Independence Chapel. Burial will be in Floral Hills cemetery, Kansas City. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Friday at the chapel.

THOMAS L. CONNELL

Thomas L. Connell, 65, Lee`s Summit, died Friday, Oct. 31, 1997, at the Baptist Medical Center.

Mr. Connell was born Jan. 30, 1932, near Sandersville, Ga., and had lived in Independence and Lee`s Summit the past 23 years. He was a Marine veteran of the Korean War. He had worked for Bethlehem Steel in Pennsylvania before moving to this area He was the plant manager for Havens Steel in Kansas City for 15 years, retiring in 1992. He was the district director of the American Welding Society, District 16, a member of St. Paul`s United Methodist Men`s Club and a member of the First Presbyterian Church and its Thursday morning coffee group.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, S. B. and Levin Connell; and a sister, Sarah Connell.

His survivors include his wife, D. Jean Connell, of the home; two sons, Gary Thompson and his wife, Linda, Las Vegas, Nev., and Brian Thompson and his wife, Tracy, Harrisonville, Mo.; three grandchildren, Valerie, Crystal and Conlin Thompson; two nieces; and two nephews.

Memorial services will be at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, Nov. 6, at the First Presbyterian Church, Independence. Visitation will following the service. Memorial contributions may be made to any local animal shelter.

Arrangements are under the direction of Speaks Suburban Chapel.

LEWIS B. "BART" DOWNUM

Lewis Barton "Bart" Downum, 73, Independence, died Thursday, Oct. 30, 1997, at the Medical Center of Independence.

Mr. Downum was born June 6, 1924, in Lowell, Ark. He served in Europe during World War II in the U.S. Army 35th Infantry Division. He received a Purple Heart for the Normandy Campaign in France. He was a lifetime member of the Disabled American Veterans, the American Association of Retired Persons, the International Association of Machinist Local 1650 and the Spring Creek Baptist Church in Springdale, Ark. He retired from TWA in 1990.

His survivors include his wife of 48 years, Wanda Downum, of the home; a daughter, Linda Peters, Independence; three sisters, Helen Pattishall, Dickinson, Ind., LaVerne Creekmore, Blue Springs, and Elaine Farish, Springdale; and several nieces and nephews.

Graveside services will be 11 a.m. Monday at Floral Hills cemetery. Friends may call from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday at the Speaks Suburban Chapel. The family suggests contributions to the Visiting Nurses Association, 2801 Wyandotte, Kansas City, Mo. 64018 or to the Heartland Community Church, 2400 S. Lee`s Summit Road, Independence, Mo. 64055.

Arrangements are under the direction of Speaks Suburban Chapel.

GLENNIE M. HILKER

Glennie M. Hilker, 90, Independence, died Thursday, Oct. 31, 1997, in her home. Mrs. Hilker was born Aug. 17, 1907 in Cole Camp, Mo. She lived in Independence for 70 years.

Mrs. Hilker was a homemaker and a member of the Maywood Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Louis W. Hilker, in 1958.

She is survived by her daughter, Doris E. Lambert, Independence; brother Scott Corman, Burbank, Calif.; a grandson Michael Lambert; and two great-grandchildren.

Graveside services are scheduled for 11 a.m. Monday at the Mount Washington cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of the George C. Carson and Sons Independence Chapel.

Irene Fields

Irene Fields, 87, of Deer Park, Texas, died Dec. 8, 2004 at San Jacinto Manor in Deer Park.

Mrs. Fields was born on Oct. 15, 1917 to Victor and Mae (Sedan) Pickrel in Sargeants Bluff, Iowa. She had lived in the Independence area until moving to New Orleans, La. and then to Houston, Texas. She had been a clerk with the Nazarene Publishing House in Kansas City. She was also a member of the Kansas City First Church of the Nazarene and most recently the Pasadena, Texas First Church of the Nazarene.

She was preceded in death by her husband, William L. Fields, a son, William Fields and a sister Margaret Mullenax.

Her survivors include a son, Kenneth J. Fields and wife, Joy, of La Porte, Texas and three grandchildren, Kendra Christoph, Jennifer Vaughn and Lance Parks.

Services will be Monday at the Carson-Speaks Chapel. Burial in Mount Washington Forever cemetery. Visitation is from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Sunday at the chapel.

Robert M. Johnson Sr.

Robert M. Johnson Sr., 78, of Independence, died Dec. 9, 2004 at his home.

Mr. Johnson was born Nov. 19, 1926 in Kansas City, Mo. He was the son of Alvin and Julia (Fugate) Johnson. He was an auto mechanic in the Independence area prior to becoming a welder for Mid-West Steel Company retiring in 1989 and worked for 14 years for Don and Linda Sladkdek at Do-It Best Hardware in Independence. He was also a member of the Independence Central Restoration Church and Iron Workers Local 520. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and Korea.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Judy Ann Johnson in 1949.

His survivors include his wife of 55 years, Vera Johnson, of the home; three sons, Robert M. Johnson, Jr. and wife Sheila, Blue Springs; Gary A. Johnson and wife Diana, Independence and Mark D. Johnson and wife Paula, Blue Springs; two brothers, Alvin Johnson, Enoch, Utah and Warren Johnson, Higginsville, Mo.; two sisters, Margarette Calvert, Oak Grove and Betty Haynie, Gladstone; five grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.

Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Tuesday at New Salem Funeral Home in Independence. Visitation will be 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. prior to services at the New Salem Chapel.

MYRON "MIKE" ABERNATHEY

Myron "Mike" Abernathey, 58, Lee`s Summit, formerly of Independence, died Monday, Nov. 24, 1997, at St. Luke`s Hospital in Kansas City.

Mr. Abernathey was born Jan. 9, 1939, in Harrisonville, Mo., and lived in Independence most of his life, moving to Lee`s Summit three years ago. After graduating from William Chrisman High School in 1956, he served active duty with the U.S. Coast Guard, Company Roger-4 in Cape May, N.J., and later in the reserves. He worked for AT&T Microelectronics in Lee`s Summit for 28 years, retiring as a supervisor in 1990. He was a member of the Pioneers and Mount Washington Baptist Church. He coached many youth league teams over the years.

His survivors include his wife of 37 years, Sally Abernathey of the home; two sons, Mike Abernathey, Independence, and Steve Abernathey, Lee`s Summit; a daughter, Krista Crossley, and a sister, Leona Widick, both of Independence; a brother, Marvin Abernathey, Blue Springs; a granddaughter, Morgan Elizabeth Abernathey; and many nieces and nephews.

Services will be 1 p.m. Saturday at the George C. Carson & Sons Independence Chapel. Burial will be in Mount Washington cemetery. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Friday at the chapel. The family suggests contributions to the American Cancer Society.

HENRY J. ALEXANDER SR.

Henry J. Alexander Sr., 81, Independence, died Monday, Nov. 24, 1997, at his home.

Mr. Alexander was born June 20, 1916, in Omaha, Neb. He was a locomotive engineer for the Missouri Pacific Railroad, and was a member of the National Association of Retired Railroad Employees.

His survivors include his wife, Christine A. Alexander of the home; a son, Henry J. "Hank" Alexander Jr., and a daughter, Phyllis M. "Pat" Leigh, both of Independence; two sisters, Fay Cavalieri, Omaha, and Rose Phillippe, Anaheim, Calif.; four grandsons, Timothy M. Watkins, Donald L. Davis, James B.Davis and Craig J. Alexander; and three great-grandchildren, Austin M. Watkins, Morgan B. Watkins and Colby J. Davis.

Graveside services will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Green Lawn cemetery, Kansas City. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Park Lawn Funeral Home, Kansas City.

GRETCHEN N. BOWMAN

Gretchen Nichole Bowman, 18, Independence, died Monday, Nov. 24, 1997, near St. Joseph, Mo.

Gretchen was born April 2, 1979, in Joplin, Mo., and lived in Neosho, Mo., before moving to Independence in 1985. She was a 1997 graduate of Truman High School, and was currently a freshman at York College, York, Neb. She was a member of the Church of Christ in Independence.

Her survivors include her parents, Jon and Karen Bowman, and a sister, Karissa Bowman, all of the home; paternal grandmother, Etta Mae Bowman, Neosho; maternal grandparents, Jim and Anna Wills, and maternal great-grandmother, Ivie Robins, all of Seneca, Mo.; two uncles, Chuck Bowman and Jeff Bowman; and four aunts, Lynnetta Bowman, Julia Gerhard, Brenda Murray and Rebecca Caylor.

Services will be 2 p.m. Friday at the Speaks Suburban Chapel, and 2 p.m. Saturday at the Campbell-Biddlecome Funeral Home, Seneca. Burial will be in New Salem cemetery, Neosho. Friends may call from 1 to 2 p.m. Friday and Saturday at the funeral homes. The family suggests contributions to the Gretchen Bowman Memorial Fund.

LENA E. BROWN

Lena Edith Cundiff Brown, 84, Independence, died Thursday, Nov. 13, 1997, at her daughter`s home in Independence.

Mrs. Brown was born June 10, 1913, in a homestead west of Fairview, and lived in Sidney, Mont., most of her life, moving to Independence two years ago. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lawrence Brown, and a son, Robert Brown.

Her survivors include her daughter, Ruth Anderson, Independence; three grandchildren, Bradd Anderson, Columbia, Mo., Jennifer Anderson, Mission, Kan., and Jay Anderson, Independence; a niece, Joyce Sweley; two nephews, LaVern Darnall and Mervin Darnall; and numerous great-nieces and nephews.

Services were Nov. 18 at the Fulkerson Funeral Home, Sidney. Burial was in Fairview cemetery, Sidney.

JESS A. CRUGAR

Jess A. Crugar, 54, Independence, died Friday, Nov. 21, 1997, at his home.

Mr. Crugar was born Dec. 12, 1942, in Kansas City.

His survivors include his wife, Bonnie Crugar of the home; his children, Mitzie and Michael Hurtado, Independence, and Lori and Randy Johnson, Lee`s Summit; his parents, Jack W. and Lillian Crugar, Independence; two sisters, Jeannie Moore, Independence, and Carol A. Huffman, Kansas City, Kan.; three brothers, Ralph W. Crugar Jr., Robert L. Crugar and David L. Crugar, all of Independence; and two grandchildren, Ryan and Haden Johnson.

Services will be 1 p.m. Saturday at the Langsford Funeral Home, Lee`s Summit. Burial will be in Floral Hills East, Lee`s Summit. Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. The family suggests contributions in his memory at Nation`s Bank, in care of his sister, Jeannie Moore.

DR. F. MARK McKIERNAN

Dr. F. Mark McKiernan, 57, Independence, died Monday, Nov. 24, 1997, at Truman Medical Center in Kansas City.

Dr. McKiernan was born May 26, 1940, in Fort Madison, Iowa. He owned and operated the McKiernan and Associates Consulting Firm for the past 15 years. He earned his doctorate in history from the University of Kansas, Lawrence. He had been an author and poet, a member of Rotary International and was the non-profit program coordinator at the Park College Graduate School of Public Affairs. For the past 12 years, he had been pastor and associate pastor of the South Crysler RLDS congregation.

His survivors include his wife, Dorene McKiernan of the home; a son, Michael J. McKiernan, Kansas City; a daughter, Laurie L. McKiernan, Minneapolis; and his mother, Zora Belle McKiernan, Independence.

Services will be 10 a.m. Friday at the RLDS Stone Church, River Boulevard and Lexington Avenue. Burial will be in Mound Grove cemetery. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 tonight at the Speaks Midtown Chapel. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the Habitat for Humanity Three Trails Neighbors, 201 W. Lexington Ave., Independence, Mo. 64050, or Camp Doniphan, Route 2, Box 1065, Excelsior Springs, Mo. 64024.

JAMES R. SCRIBNER

James Ray Scribner, 75, Kansas City, died Monday, Nov. 24, 1997, at North Kansas City Hospital.

Mr. Scribner was born Nov. 11, 1922, in Little Rock, Ark. He worked in the bakery at A&P before he retired. He had owned and operated the Northeast Laundromat.

His survivors include his wife of 50 years, Mamie Scribner; a daughter, Nancy Sanders; five sons, Robert Scribner, Lee Scribner, Donald Scribner, Steven Scribner and James Scribner; a sister, Edna Pennington; 18 grandchildren; and 26 great-grandchildren.

Services were today at Charter Funerals/Truman Road Chapel, Kansas City. Burial was in Forest Hill cemetery, Kansas City.

CORA E. AKERS

Cora E. Denkinger Akers, 98, Independence, died Sunday, Oct. 26, 1997.

Mrs. Akers was born June 11, 1899, near Hiawatha, Kan., and had lived in this area since 1933. During the 1940s, she worked at Montgomery Ward and at North American Aviation. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Virgil Akers. Her survivors include a sister, Sadie M. Lewis, Pickering, Mo.; four nieces, Norma Jean Cooper, Kansas City, Dorothy Cross, Bedford, Iowa, Marjorie Denkinger, Hiawatha, and Lucile Cain, Sebring, Fla.; a nephew, Lloyd Wickstrom, Sebring; and great-nieces and nephews.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Speaks Midtown Chapel. Graveside services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Highland (Kan.) cemetery. Friends may call from 10 to 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the chapel. The family suggests contributions to the church.
