THORNTON
Otentha M. Thornton, 82, Columbia, died Nov. 24, 1999, at the University of Missouri-Columbia Hospital and Clinics.
She was born Nov. 3, 1917, in Columbia, a daughter of George and Annie Woods Thornton.
She was a member of St. Paul A.M.E. Church, Columbia; Ladies Optimistic Club; Douglass Coalition; Richard T. Kelly Post 238 American Legion Ladies Auxiliary; War Mothers; Foster Grandparents for Ridgeway School and a volunteer for the community recreation program.
Survivors include: four daughters, Shirley Henderson, Wichita, Kan., Nettie Wesley, Hamden, Conn., Ann Thornton, Columbia, and Ethel Jackson, Jefferson City; two sons, William Sonny Thornton, Kansas City, and Sanford Thornton, U.S. Navy; 12 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at the St. Paul A.M.E. Church, Columbia. The Rev. Clifton N. St. James will officiate. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, Columbia.
Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. today at Warren Funeral Home, Columbia.
JOHNSON
Sophie Gladys Johnson, 97, Urbana, died Nov. 27, 1999, at Citizens Memorial Hospital, Bolivar.
She was born July 4, 1902, in Camden County, a daughter of John W. and Susan Jane Evans White . She was married to Harold V. Morgan Sr., who died in 1923. She was married Sept. 30, 1924, to James W. Johnson, who died Jan. 12, 1964.
She was a charter member of Branch Assembly of God Church, Branch.
Survivors include: three sons, Harold Morgan Jr., Preston, Vernon Johnson, Branch, and Emmett Johnson, Camdenton; three daughters, Daisy L. Tice, Nashville, Tenn., Helen Reser, Springfield, and Annabelle Jones, Hermitage; 12 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren and 12 great-great-grandchildren.
One granddaughter preceded her in death.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Branch Assembly of God Church. The Rev. Paul Stephens will officiate. Burial will be in Hopewell Cemetery, Tunis.
Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. today at Hedges Funeral Home, Macks Creek.
DUNAVANT
Billy Williamson Dunavant, 89, Fulton, died Nov. 28, 1999, at Callaway Community Hospital.
He was born Nov. 18, 1910, in Fulton, a son of Edmund W. and Nuell Smith Dunavant. He was married Feb. 16, 1936, to Mary Alice Ebersole, who died May 18, 1996.
He was a 1929 graduate of Fulton High School and attended Westminster College. He received his pharmacy registration from St. Joseph. In 1943, he bought Nolin Pharmacy, which became Dunavant's Drug, which he operated until his retirement in 1972.
He was past president of the Chamber of Commerce and the Kiwanis Club. He served on the Fulton School Board, the SERVE board and the police board. He was a chapter advisor for the Phi Gamma Delta Fraternity at Westminster College and had been a member of the local chapter of AA. He was a member and past elder of the First Presbyterian Church, Fulton.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at First Presbyterian Church, Fulton.
Memorials are suggested to the First Presbyterian Church, the Kingdom of Callaway Historical Society or SERVE.
Arrangements are under the direction of Maupin Funeral Home, Fulton.
INMAN
Lyman V. Inman, 83, California, died Nov. 26, 1999, at California Care Center.
He was born Jan. 25, 1916, in California, a son of Virgil P. and Stella Dooley Inman. He was married Aug. 24, 1943, in High Point, to Mary Ellen Milburn, who died in 1960. He was married Feb. 11, 1964, in California, to Augusta Melvina Allee, who died Dec. 8, 1980.
An Army veteran of World War II, he was a bricklayer and worked for various companies until his retirement. He was a member of Bricklayers Local 11 and First Baptist Church, Eldon.
Survivors include two sisters, Omega Blazer, Prescott, Ariz., and Geraldine Lacky, Oxnard, Calif.
There will be no visitation. Burial will be at a later date.
Arrangements are under the direction of Bowlin-Cantriel Funeral Home, California.
MASHBURN
Ruth Comila Mashburn, 89, Columbia, formerly of Laurie, died Nov. 28, 1999, in Columbia.
She was born Sept. 30, 1910, in Augusta, Ark., a daughter of John C. and Sarah E. Roson Bell. She was married April 30, 1932, in Pine Bluff, Ark., to R. Charles Mashburn, who died June 7, 1993.
She was a member of Ozark Chapel United Methodist Church, Laurie. She held dual memberships in Order of Eastern Star Chapter 410, Versailles, where she had been a member for more than 50 years, and Chapter 322, Columbia.
Survivors include two daughters, Patti Tinker, Satellite, Fla., and Marilyn Schleper, Columbia; six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Ozark Chapel United Methodist Church. The Rev. James Lawley and Versailles OES Chapter 410 will officiate. Burial will be in Ozark Chapel Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday at Kidwell-Garber Funeral Home, Laurie.
Memorials are suggested to Option Home Health & Missouri River Hospice, Versailles.
HELDSTAB
Billie Marie Heldstab, 62, Sedalia, died Nov. 25, 1999, at her home.
She was born July 31, 1937, in Jefferson City, a daughter of Ansel E. and Clara Marie Day Pryor. She was married July 3, 1958, in Eldon, to Henry Lee "Hank" Heldstab, who survives at the home.
She had lived and gone to school in Tuscumbia. She attended Lindenwood College, St. Charles, for two years. A homemaker, she was a former member of Lake Ozark Christian Church. She was a member of First Christian Church, Sedalia.
Other survivors include: one son, Charles Henry Heldstab, Olathe, Kan.; one daughter, Rowena Lynn DeJong, Hospers, Iowa; and four grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Lake Ozark Christian Church. The Rev. William A. Curwood and the Rev. Kerry Presnell will officiate. Burial will be in Tuscumbia Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 10-11 a.m. Saturday.
Memorials are suggested to the American Cancer Society.
Arrangements are under the direction of McLaughlin Bros. Funeral Chapel, Sedalia.
SHAFFER
Mickie Shaffer, 59, Richland, died Nov. 6, 1999, at University of Missouri-Columbia Hospital and Clinics, from injuries sustained in an automobile accident.
She was born Sept. 13, 1940, in Elkhart, Ind., a daughter of George A. and Ruth E. Beggs Shaffer. Her parents survive in Linn Creek.
She was a secretary for businesses around the Lake area and attended Kingdom Hall Jehovah's Witnesses Church.
Other survivors include one brother, John Shaffer, Morrilton, Ark., and one sister, Patti Bateman, Camdenton.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Hedges Funeral Homes, Camdenton. Al Erickson will officiate.
Visitation will be from 1-2 p.m. Saturday.
SMITH
Kathleen Smith, 48, Freeburg, died Nov. 29, 1999, at her home.
She was born July 7, 1952, in St. Louis County, a daughter of Francis and Dorothy Moore Sweeney. Her mother survives in St. Louis.
She worked for nine years in the insulated glass department at Quaker Window Products Company, Freeburg, as a specialty glass worker. She had lived in Ferguson.
Other survivors include: one daughter, Brenda Stringer, Freeburg; one brother, Patrick Sweeney, St. Charles; her fiancee, Kelly Paul, Freeburg; and one grandson.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Birmingham-Martin Funeral Home, Vienna. The Rev. Mike Murphy will officiate.
Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. today and 9-11 a.m. Thursday.
THACKER
Rosa H. Thacker, 83, Eldon, died Nov. 30, 1999, at Eldon Healthcare Center.
She was born March 14, 1916, in Roderfield, W.Va., a daughter of Herman and Celia Cox Hempel. She was married Dec. 20, 1941, in Eldon, to Roy Elmer Thacker, who died April 11, 1963.
She worked at Glasner Brother Pant Factory, Eldon, and Chesebrough-Ponds. She also managed Bible Book Store, Eldon, and was a member of Ninth Street Christian Church, Eldon.
Survivors include: two daughters, Carolyn Guyon and Evelyn Brumley, both of Eldon; two sons, Dr. Howard Thacker, Kirksville, and Daniel Thacker, Eldon; six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson.
One son, Gerald Ray Thacker, preceded her in death.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Phillips Funeral Home, Eldon. The Rev. Eldon Myers will officiate. Burial will be in Dooley Cemetery, Eldon.
Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Thursday.
WIDMER
Helen I. Widmer, 75, Highland, Ill., died Nov. 29, 1999, at St. Joseph Hospital, Highland.
She was born Dec. 20, 1923, in Murrayville, Ill., a daughter of Francis "Frank" and Mary Ann Corbett Lonergan. She was married Sept. 14, 1946, in Murrayville, to Joseph E. Widmer, who died Dec. 30, 1991.
She was a 1941 graduate of Murrayville High School and a 1945 graduate of Our Savior Hospital School of Nursing, Jacksonville, Ill. She worked at St. Joseph Hospital, Highland, for 20 years. From 1965 until her retirement in 1983, she was a nurse for Dr. Walter Zielonko, Troy, Ill.
She was a member of St. Paul Catholic Church; VFW Post 5694 Ladies Auxiliary; Lee Iton American Legion Post 439 Ladies Auxiliary; Daughters of Isabella, Sacred Heart Circle 237 and St. Anne Altar Society, all of Highland. She volunteered for Red Cross blood drives and was a member of the Friday Night Fish Fry group, both at the VFW.
Survivors include: two daughters, Kathryn A. "Kay" Hare, Russellville, and Janet M. Marr, Loretto, Minn.; one brother, Gerald Thomas Lonergan, Macomb, Ill.; one sister, Catherine Skinner, Seminole, Fla.; six grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Paul Catholic Church, Highland. The Rev. David L. Peters will officiate. Burial will be in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery, Highland.
Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Friday and 8-9:30 a.m. Saturday at Spegnel-Boulanger Funeral Home, Highland.
