Dean Edmondson
Sept. 9, 1940 - Dec. 7, 2004

KAHOKA, Mo. - Dean Edmondson, 64, of Kahoka, Mo., died Tuesday, Dec. 7, 2004, in his home.

He was born Sept. 9, 1940, in Fox City in Clark County, Mo., the son of Earl A. and Minnie Nimmo Edmondson.

He married Linda Malone in Kahoka on April 11, 1964. She survives.

Additional survivors include: his mother-in-law, June Kinney of Dallas; two sons, Brent Edmondson and his wife, Jamie, of Kahoka, and Mark Edmondson of Hillsboro, Mo.; two grandchildren, Tony and Chelsea Edmondson of Kahoka; Colton and Caleb Hammond of Kahoka, who were like grandchildren to him; a brother, Glenn Edmondson and his wife, Pam, of Phoenix; two sisters, Josephine Woods and her husband, Bud, of Arcadia, Fla., and Burnadean Balzer of Canton, Mo; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Earl Woods of Nauvoo, Ill., Callie Edmondson of Moody, Mo., Nettie Belliveau of Corvallis, Ore., Dorothy Alvis of Alexandria, Mo., Carroll and Virginia Whiteaker, Betty Rosencrans, John and Karen Malone, Randy Malone and his fianc/, Kathy Parinello, Jerry and Joan Malone, and Bill and Martha Porter, all of Kahoka, Edith and Jack Stewart of Hillsboro, Patsy Hoyt of Fort Madison, and Billie Hatfield of Wayland, Mo.; as well as nieces, nephews, and other relatives.

He was preceded in death by his parents; fathers-in-law and mothers-in-law, Clyde and Remah Whiteaker and Ted and Dorothy Malone; four brothers: Kenneth, Donald, Lawrence and Bev Edmondson; a sister, Dorothy Woods; and three brothers-in-law, Jerry Balzer, Charles Rosencrans and Gary Whiteaker.

He attended school in Clark County and later received additional vo-tech training.

He was a United States Army veteran, serving in Germany in 1964 to 1965.

He was also a former member of the Kahoka Lions Club.

He was dedicated to scouting and had been very involved with the Boy Scouts through the years and for several years was Cub Master. He had been employed at Morse Rubber (now Metso Minerals) in Keokuk for 18 years and later worked for the City of Kahoka, operating a lawn mower repair service during that time until he was no longer able to work due to his health.

He was also a talented woodworker and had sold his products at various craft shows and flea markets throughout the Tri-State Area.

He loved to hunt and fish. His family was his reason for living. He was a familiar figure around the community in his scooter and enjoyed the friendships he made in the businesses he frequented and over the many cups of coffee he drank at the restaurants in town.

Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Wilson Funeral Home in Kahoka, with the Rev. Gary Payne officiating.

Burial, with full military rites, will be in Kahoka cemetery .

Visitation is Friday at the funeral home, with family receiving friends 6 to 8 pm.

Memorials may be made to The Boy Scouts (National Jamboree Trip) for Brent, Tony and Josh or to Cub Scout Pack # 145.

Nunzio Columbus
Aug. 8, 1909 - Dec. 28, 2004

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas - Nunzio Columbus, 95, of Corpus Christi, Texas, and formerly of the Wyaconda, Mo., area, died Tuesday, Dec. 28, 2004, at the Trisun Nursing Home in Corpus Christi.

He was born on Aug. 8, 1909, in Long Island City, N.Y., the son of Thomas and Domenica Randazzo Columbus.

He was united in marriage to Ellen Isabelle Rayburn on Oct. 31, 1948, in Kahoka, Mo. She preceded him in death on Nov. 18, 1971.

He had worked as a plumber in Babylon, Long Island City, N.Y., retiring in 1962. He then moved to Wyaconda where he farmed. He worked hard, especially with his hands. He enjoyed gardening and caring for his flowerbeds. He loved fishing. He cherished the time he spent with his family.

Survivors include: seven daughters, Mary Chevalier, of Monticello, N.Y., Ann Lewis of Florida, Lena C. Nemec of Corpus Christie, Catherine Lovette of Fort Madison, Isabelle Stevenson of Picayune, Miss., Janet Mae Alva Columbus of Lake Charles, Ga., and Domenica Rose Columbus of Picayune; nine sons, James Columbus of Palm Coast, Fla., Joseph Columbus of Deer Park, L.I., N.Y, Theodore Columbus of Florida, Thomas Columbus of Sebastian, Fla., Albert Columbus of Keokuk, John Columbus of Middle Island, N.Y., Peter Columbus of Margate, Fla., Joseph Columbus of Texas and Samuel Columbus of Naples, Ill.

He also preceded in death by a daughter, Loretta Ellen Columbus, and a son, Nunzio Columbus Jr.

Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Liberty cemetery in rural Williamstown, Mo.

Visitation is after 4 p.m. Saturday, with family meeting friends from 6 to 8 p.m. at Vigen Memorial Home in Kahoka.

Veva K. Hall
May 3, 1958 - April 7, 2009

REVERE, Mo. Veva K. Hall, 50, of Revere, Mo., died Tuesday, April 7, 2009, at Blessing Hospital, in Quincy, Ill., following a courageous battle with cancer.

She was born on May 3, 1958, in Adair County, Mo., the daughter of L. D. and Bertha Mae Stewart Christy.

She married Ron Hall on Dec. 21, 1990, in Keokuk. He survives.

Additional survivors include: her parents, L.D. and Bertha Mae Christy of Revere; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Don and Grace Hall of Keokuk; three sons, Ryan Shannon and Emily Lowe of Des Moines, Jeremy Hobbs and Darcy Nelson of Mount Pleasant and Tyler Hobbs; a daughter, Kristy Shannon and Chris Brice of Holiday, Fla.; four grandchildren, Starlet and Lamby Shannon and Alex and Cody Brice; a sister, Tena (Mrs. Dale) Gorham of Hartford City, Ind.; a sister-in-law, Brenda Hall of Keokuk; as well as aunts, nieces and nephews, cousins and other relatives.

She was preceded in death by her grandparents.

She graduated from Revere High School in 1976. She was employed as a correctional officer at the Iowa State Penitentiary in Fort Madison and was on leave due to her deteriorating health. She loved collecting antiques, caring for her flower beds, her grandkids and her dog, Zeus.

There will be no formal services. However, friends are invited to visit with family from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday at Wilson Funeral Home in Kahoka.

Memorials are requested to the family.

Erma F. Spray
Aug. 6, 1923 - April 6, 2009

KAHOKA, Mo. - Erma F. Spray, 85, of Kahoka, Mo., died Monday, April 6, 2009, in the Clark County Nursing Home, Kahoka.

She was born on Aug. 6, 1923, in Williamstown, Mo., the daughter of Henry Frank and Jettie Mae Webster Brookhart.

She married Delbert E. Spray on Nov. 28, 1946, in Kirksville, Mo. He preceded her in death.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Wilson Funeral Home, Kahoka, with Pastor Shawn McAfee officiating. Live bluegrass music will be performed beginning at noon in the funeral home lobby.

Burial will be in the Ballard cemetery, southwest of Kahoka.

Visitation is after 1 p.m. today at the funeral home, with family receiving friends from 6 to 8 p.m.

Memorials are suggested to the Delbert and Erma Spray Musical Scholarship, which will be offered through the Clark County R-1 School District.

Maxine Redding

Maxine Redding, 84, of Keokuk, formerly of Wyaconda, Mo., died Friday, April 10, 2009, in Lexington Square, Keokuk.

Funeral arrangements are pending at Wilson Funeral Home in Kahoka, Mo.

Vernon L. Schmid
July 25, 1928 - April 10, 2009

KAHOKA, Mo. - Vernon L. Schmid, 80, of rural Kahoka, Mo., died peacefully on Good Friday, April 10, 2009, in Blessing Hospital, Quincy, Ill., following a lengthy battle with cancer, lovingly surrounded by his family.

He was born on July 25, 1928, in Clark County, Mo., the son of Lewis and Katie Kirchner Schmid.

He married Darlene Bash on June 14, 1952, at the Shrine of St. Patrick in St. Patrick, Mo. She survives.

A mass of Christian burial service was scheduled this morning at St. Michaels Catholic Church, with the Rev. Paul Hartley officiating. Julie Kirchner was organist. Special selection was Be Not Afraid.

Burial was in the Kahoka cemetery.

Visitation was held after noon Sunday at Wilson Funeral Home, Kahoka, with the rosary beginning at 6 p.m. followed by family receiving friends until 8 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the American Cancer Society or the Kahoka cemetery.

Maxine Redding
Aug. 17, 1924 - April 10, 2009

Maxine Redding, 84, of Keokuk, IA, formerly of Wyaconda, Mo., died unexpectedly Friday, April 10, 2009, at Lexington Square Keokuk.

She was born on Aug. 17, 1924, in Keokuk, the youngest of 18 children born to William and Rose Stice Pruett.

She attended schools in Clark County and later Scotland County, Mo., graduating from Memphis High School in 1942 and later received her teaching certificate. She taught a year at Walnut Grove School near Downing and it was there that she met Robert Otis Redding who attracted her attention while walking home from school one day. His excuse was that he was hunting for rabbits when in fact he was taking a look at the new school marm. The attraction was mutual. After their engagement, Maxine worked at a bank in Kirksville, Mo., and lived and assisted her sister, June, who ran a hotel/boarding house.

On Dec. 25, 1943, she and Robert were married in Memphis, Mo. They resided briefly in Kirksville until Roberts induction into the Army in February 1944 at which time she moved home with her parents, with the exception of eight weeks spent near Fort Bliss, Texas. From that time on she became a life-long domestic engineer.

Survivors include six sons, David and his wife, Sandra, of Wyaconda, William and his wife, Rae Joann, of Molville, John and his wife, Linda, of Wyaconda, Jerry and his wife, Julia, of Kahoka, Mo., Sam and his wife, Teri, of Kahoka, and Tim and his wife, Kaye, of Kahoka; five daughters, Kay Redding-Andrews of Jefferson City, Mo., Deborah Malone and her husband, Pat, of Kahoka, Rebecca Moore and her husband, Harold, of Columbia, Mo., Elizabeth Redding of Fort Madison, and Martha Ellefritz and her husband, Randy, of Keokuk; a daughter-in-law, Susan Redding of Kahoka; a brother, Albert Pruett of Rochester, Minn.; two sisters-in-law, Wilma Smoot and Maxine Atkinson, both of Downing; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren; several great-great grandchildren; as well as other relatives.

She also was preceded in death by her parents; two sons, Keith Redding and an infant son; and 16 brothers and sisters.

She was a member of the Wyaconda Baptist Church.

She loved to crochet, read and watch hummingbirds.

Services will be at 2 p.m. today at Wilson Funeral Home, Kahoka, with the Rev. Ernest Deatrick officiating. Special music will include recordings In the Garden and The Old Rugged Cross.

Burial was in Fairmont cemetery.

Visitation was held this morning at the funeral home, with family receiving friends beginning at 1 p.m. until time of services.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society or the Fairmont cemetery.

Marilyn Blanche Hesse Hales
May 9, 1931 - April 15, 2009

WYACONDA, Mo. - Marilyn Blanche Hesse Hales, 77, of Wyaconda, Mo., died Wednesday, April 15, 2009, in Luther Manor Nursing Home, Hannibal, Mo., where she had been a resident the past several months.

She was born on the family farm northeast of Wyaconda on May 9, 1931, the daughter of Carl Calvin and Mabel Hardman Hesse.

She was united in marriage to Larry Arthur Hales on Aug. 27, 1950, at the United Methodist Parsonage in Luray, Mo.

Survivors include her husband, Larry, recently of Luther Manor Village in Hannibal; two sons, Randy R. Hales of Rural Retreat, Va., and Gregory L. Hales and his wife, Cathy, of Maywood, Mo.; a daughter, Sheila R. (Hales) Swafford and her husband, Donald, of Novinger, Mo.; a sister, Edna Lucille Beckett of Kansas City, Mo.; seven grandchildren, Melissa Swafford-Davis of Buckner, Mo., Jennifer Brownell of Novinger, Rebecca Neel of LaPorte, Texas, Kristopher Hales and Katrina Hales, both of Rural Retreat, and Victoria Hales and Austin Hales, both of Maywood; two great-grandchildren; two stepgreat-grandchildren; as well as nieces, nephews and other relatives.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

She graduated from Wyaconda C-1 School and attended Northeast Missouri State Teachers College (now Truman State University) at Kirksville.

She was a farm wife all of her married life. She also worked outside the home as a newspaper proofreader, receptionist/bookkeeper in a doctors office, bank teller, school secretary and life insurance sales. In addition, she was a private piano teacher for 55 years.

Marilyn was a life long resident of Wyaconda and was deeply involved and devoted to the community. For more than 40 years she was organist and Sunday School teacher at the Wyaconda United Methodist Church. She also served as scorekeeper at all basketball games for Wyaconda C-1 School for more than 40 years. She was a member of Royal Neighbors of America and had been a sales person for that company for many years. In her spare time, she enjoyed sewing, quilting and crocheting. She especially loved spending time with her grandchildren.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Wilson Funeral Home, Kahoka, with the Rev. Beryl Cragg officiating.

Burial will follow in the Wyaconda cemetery.

Visitation is today at the funeral home, with family receiving friends from 4 to 6 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the Wyaconda United Methodist Church.

B.J. Wiss Jr.

KAHOKA, Mo. - B.J. Wiss Jr., 82, of Kahoka, Mo., died Monday, April 13, 2009, in the Clark County Nursing Home, Kahoka.

Funeral arrangements are pending at Wilson Funeral Home in Kahoka.
