McCLEARY

Ray McCleary, 86, Linn, died Jan. 6, 2000, at Capital Region Medical Center.

He was born Dec. 28, 1913, in Ozark County, a son of Jesse P. and Martha E. Coble McCleary. He was married May 13, 1942, to Rhenelda Mae Gelven, who died May 3, 1981. He was married Feb. 19, 1983, to Clara Anne Robinson, who died April 2, 1997.

He was an Army veteran of World War II and received five Bronze Stars. A resident of Central Missouri since 1955, he owned and operated McCleary Mobile Station in Linn for many years.

He was a member of the VFW, Linn Post, and the Linn Masonic Lodge.

Survivors include: one son, Robert R. McCleary, Linn; five stepsons, James D. Robinson, Edward G. Robinson and Lester R. Robinson, all of Linn, Charles H. Robinson, Bonnots Mill, and Lance G. Robinson, Holts Summit; one daughter, Rhonda Mae Phillips, Linn; seven stepdaughters, Patsy Ann Hetzel, Winfield, Kan., Peggy Lou Bryson and Wanda Lee Pfhal, both of  Jefferson City, Sandra Jo Haslag, Bonnots Mill, Anita Mae Robinson and Elizabeth Ellen Muenks, both of Linn, and Nancy Joan Swartwood, Kansas City, Kan.; one sister, Claris Fay Tenpenny, Visalia, Calif.; 30 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren.

One stepdaughter, Susan Kay Sprenger, preceded him in death.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Morton Funeral Home, Linn. Private graveside services will be at Linn Memorial Park Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. Friday.

Memorials are suggested to the Arthritis Foundation.

MURPHY

Earl P. "Pat" Murphy, 77, Linn, died Jan. 5, 2000, at Green Meadows Health Care Center, Linn.

He was born Aug. 6, 1922, in Corona, Calif., a son of Emmett and Lena Murrell Murphy. He was married Aug. 6, 1949, in Prairie Home, to Helen Gerloff, who died May 14, 1994.

He lived most of his life in Central Missouri and attended school in California, Mo. He owned and operated an antique dealership. He served in the U.S. Coast Guard for three years. He was a member of the Chamois Baptist Church.

Survivors include: one daughter, Donna Kliethermes, Loose Creek; and two grandchildren.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Morton Funeral Home, Linn. Burial will be in the Chamois City Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m. Thursday.

Memorials are suggested to the Immaculate Conception School, Loose Creek.

RIEKE

Michael A. Rieke, 20, Overland Park, Kan., died Jan. 5, 2000, in Overland Park.

He was born in Kansas City, a son of Otto E. "Rusty" II and Mary Beth Rieke. His father and stepmother, Peggy Rieke, survive in Overland Park. His mother survives in Kansas City.

A graduate of Rockhurst High School, he was a pitcher on the St. Louis University baseball team. He was a member of Phi Kappa Theta fraternity and was rush chairman.

Other survivors include: one brother, Adam Rieke, Chicago; two sisters, Sara Rieke and Catherine Rieke, both of Kansas City; paternal grandmother Rosemary Rieke,  Jefferson City; and maternal grandparents Marcellus and Pauline Markway,  Jefferson City.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at St. Peter's Church, Overland Park. Burial will be in Mt. Olivet Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. today at Visitation Church, Kansas City.

Memorials are suggested to the Gabriel-Michael Rieke Scholarship Fund at Rockhurst High School.

Arrangements are under the direction of Muehlebach Funeral Home, Kansas City.

SPURRIER

Elmer Raymond Spurrier, 79, Eldon, died Jan. 5, 2000, at Capital Region Medical Center.

He was born Aug. 1, 1920, in Cold Springs, a son of William A. and Sylvia Irene Burke Spurrier. He was married Aug. 29, 1970, in Buffalo, to Margaret Zumwalt Chambers, who survives at the home.

He was a graduate of Ava High School; attended Southwest Missouri State University, Springfield; is a graduate of the University of Missouri with a bachelor's degree; a graduate of the University of Minnesota with a master's degree; and a graduate of the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill with a master's degree and a doctorate of public health in administration.

He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II. In 1950, he started work with the Missouri Division of Health, becoming director of the State Health Laboratory in 1966 until his retirement in 1987.

He was a 50-year Mason with  Jefferson Lodge No. 43, a member of the Victoria Chapter Order of Eastern Star, a member of the American Public Health Association, a member and past president of the Missouri Public Health Association, a member and past secretary of the Conference of Public Health Lab Directors, and a member of the American Society of Microbiology. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church,  Jefferson City, and attended Cornerstone United Methodist Church, Osage Beach.

Other survivors include: one son, Calvin Ray Spurrier, Casper, Wyo.; two daughters, Nina Kay Carter, Plantation, Fla., and Janice Ann Dillard, St. Charles; one stepdaughter, Sharon Walkenbach,  Jefferson City; and eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Houser-Millard Funeral Home. The Rev. Doug Walter will officiate. Burial will be in Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church Cemetery, Hartsburg.

Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Friday.

Memorials are suggested to the Cornerstone United Methodist Church Building Fund.

SWAIN

Raymond F. "Noisy" Swain, 91, Mokane, died Jan. 5, 2000, at University of Missouri-Columbia Hospital and Clinics.

He was born July 3, 1908, in Franklin, a son of Rolla and Emma Mirtzwa Swain. He was married Nov. 21, 1937, to Nina Peters, who died Dec. 23, 1986.

He was a maintenance supervisor for the Missouri Highway Department for 36 years. He was a member of Mokane United Methodist Church, and a 70-year member of Mokane Masonic Lodge.

Survivors include: two nieces, Jolene Hackman, Columbia, and Helen Turnipseed, Belvidere, Ill.; and two nephews, Mike Swain, Sedalia, and Andy Swain, San Diego, Calif.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Maupin Funeral Home, Fulton. The Rev. Harold Ferrell will officiate. Burial will be in Mokane Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 6-7:30 p.m. today, with a Masonic service at 7 p.m.

VANDERFELTZ

John H. Vanderfeltz, 51, Blue Springs, Neb., formerly of  Jefferson City, died Jan. 3, 2000, in Illinois.

He was born Oct. 7, 1948, in  Jefferson City, a son of John and Elizabeth "Becky" Burnette Vanderfeltz. His mother survives in Odessa. He was married Aug. 22, 1975, in  Jefferson City, to Geri Craig, who survives.

He graduated from high school in Shattuck, Okla. A Navy veteran, he was an over-the-road trucker for Goodrich Trucking in Beatrice. He was a member of Wymore Church of Christ, Wymore, Neb.

Other survivors include: two sons, Jay Murphy, Beatrice, and Jeff Murphy, Wymore; two daughters, Jacque Borzekofski and Jonna Adams, both of Wymore; three brothers, Steve Vanderfeltz,  Jefferson City, Gary Vanderfeltz, Buckner, and Rod Vanderfeltz, Maryville; one sister, Betty Barrett, El Cajon, Calif.; and five grandchildren.

One granddaughter preceded him in death.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Wymore Church of Christ. Jon Palmquist will officiate. Burial will be in Blue Springs Cemetery, with military services conducted by Anderson American Legion Post 25.

Visitation will be from noon-9 p.m. Friday at Laughlin-Hoevet Funeral Home, Wymore. Visitation will also be from 10-11 a.m. Saturday at the church.

Memorials are suggested to the family.

VEATCH

Frances Juanita Veatch, 85, Lake Ozark, died Jan. 5, 2000, at Lake Ozark Retirement Center.

She was born Oct. 19, 1914, in Vincennes, Ind., a daughter of John C. and Blanche Chamness. She was married Jan. 1, 1936, in Vincennes, to Norwood E. Veatch Sr., who died Dec. 30, 1999.

A homemaker, she was a member of Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church, Lake Ozark. She was an Elkette at Osage Beach Elks Lodge.

Survivors include: one son, Norwood E. Veatch Jr., Lake Ozark; three grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Eldon. The Rev. James J. O'Sullivan and the Rev. Jim Tobin will officiate. Burial will be in Greenmore Memorial Gardens, Barnett.

Visitation will be private.

Memorials are suggested to the American Cancer Society.

Arrangements are under the direction of Phillips Funeral Home, Eldon.

FRANKS

Daniel David Franks, 60, California, died Jan. 5, 2000, at St. Marys Health Center.

He was born Dec. 30, 1939, in Concordia, Kan., a son of Wesley and Helen Gronewoller Franks. His mother survives in Downs, Kan. He was married Aug. 9, 1959, in Hays, Kan., to Elaine Stutz, who survives at the home.

A graduate of Glasco High School in Kansas, he received a bachelor's degree in biology and a master's degree in science from Fort Hays University. He retired as a teacher and administrator from the Moniteau County R-1 District in California. He was a member of California Country Club.

Other survivors include: one daughter, Deborah Meyer, Hays; two sons, Dale Franks, Louisville, Ky., and David Franks, California; one brother, Darrell Franks, Louisville; one sister, Kay Franks, Manhattan, Kan.; and six grandchildren.

Services will be at 8 p.m. Saturday at United Church of Christ, California. The Rev. Gary Schulte will officiate.

Visitation will be from 3-7 p.m. Saturday at the church.

Memorials are suggested to the California High School boys basketball team.

Arrangements are under the direction of Weber and Sons Funeral Home, California.

HAYES

Anna Lee Douglas Hayes, 77, Versailles, formerly of Potosi, died Jan. 5, 2000, at her home.

She was born Oct. 30, 1922, in Potosi, a daughter of Edward W. and Cora Lottie Anderson Farrow. She was married Sept. 5, 1942, to Reggie Douglas, who preceded her in death.

A Marine veteran of World War II, she was a homemaker and member of First Baptist Church, Potosi.

Survivors include: one daughter, Regina Bennett, Versailles; one brother, Edward "Bud" Farrow, Bradenton, Fla.; two granddaughters and five great-grandchildren.

Services were at 2 p.m. today at First Baptist Church. The Rev. Stan Payne will officiate. Burial will be in Sunset Hill Cemetery, Potosi.

Arrangements were under the direction of Kidwell-Garber Funeral Homes, Versailles.
