PORTING

Catherine Ann Porting, 59, Loose Creek, died Jan. 18, 2000, at her home.

She was born March 11, 1940, in Loose Creek, a daughter of Leo and Mary Catherine "Dude" Kirsch Rotter, who survive in Bonnots Mill. She was married Oct. 6, 1962, in Bonnots Mill, to Arthur T. Porting, who survives at the home.

A graduate of Fatima High School, she co-owned and co-operated Muenks Feed Mill, Loose Creek. Later, she worked at B.J.'s Restaurant, Linn. She was a member of Immaculate Conception Church, Loose Creek; St. Anns Sodality; I.C. Church Choir; I.C. Home and School Association; Loose Creek Community Club; Community Sewing Circle; and the American Cancer Society Relay for Life.

Other survivors include: one son, Keith Porting, Holts Summit; four daughters, Lisa Pittman, Lee's Summit, Lana Beck,  Jefferson City, Lara Voss, Loose Creek, and Leah Ann Laughlin, Taos; one brother, Jimmy Rotter, Loose Creek; three sisters, Ruthie Bowen,  Jefferson City, Helen Libbert, Bonnots Mill, and Sharon Holterman, Freeburg; and 12 grandchildren.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Immaculate Conception Church. The Rev. Gregory Meystrik will officiate. Burial will be in the parish cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. today at Morton Funeral Home, Linn, with a prayer service at 7:30 p.m.

Memorials are suggested to the Porting Family Relay Team with the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life; or to the Immaculate Conception Church Building Fund, Loose Creek, Mo.

BERHORST

Evelyn Mathilda Berhorst, 79, Westphalia, died Jan. 19, 2000, at St. Marys Health Center.

She was born May 9, 1920, in Taos, a daughter of Henry and Mathilda Bernskoetter Prenger. She was married Oct. 9, 1948, in Taos, to Arthur Jacob Berhorst, who survives at the home.

A homemaker, she was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Westphalia.

Other survivors include: three sons, Larry H. Berhorst and Mark F. Berhorst, both of Westphalia, and Roger "Butch" Berhorst,  Jefferson City; two daughters, Marilyn S. Weber, Westphalia, and Laverne M. Copeland, Vienna; two sisters, Regina Forck, Taos, and Virginia Sanning, St. Louis; 14 grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.

One granddaughter preceded her in death.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at St. Joseph Catholic Church. The Rev. Robert A. Kurwicki will officiate. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Friday at Dulle-Trimble Funeral Home, Westphalia, with a prayer service at 8 p.m.

Memorials are suggested to St. Joseph Catholic School or to Masses.

HESS

Phillip Albert "P.A." Hess Sr., 67, Rocky Mount, died Jan. 18, 2000, at his home.

He was born Sept. 13, 1932, in Rocky Mount, a son of Lundy and Jane Howser Hess. He was married Dec. 22, 1952, in Versailles, to Louella Daisy Radcliff, who survives at the home.

An Army veteran of the Koran War, he retired in 1987 after 31 years with the Missouri Department of Conservation. He was a deputy sheriff in Morgan County for 16 years. He owned and operated an outboard motor and small engine shop for many years. He farmed, raised cattle and played in area bluegrass groups. He was a member of Blue Springs Baptist Church near Eldon, where he had been Sunday school superintendent and church trustee.

He also is survived by one son, Phillip Hess III, Rocky Mount, and one granddaughter.

One son, Phillip Hess Jr., preceded him in death.

Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday at Rekus Funeral Home, Eldon. John Shifflet will officiate. Burial, with military honors, will be in Rocky Mount Union Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. today.

Memorials are suggested to the American Diabetes Association.

STABA

Marie C. Staba, 79, Keosauqua, Iowa, formerly of  Jefferson City, died Jan. 18, 2000, at the Good Samaritan Center, Keosauqua.

She was born Feb. 5, 1920, in Madison County, Ala., a daughter of Ollie C. and Vera Noblin Crane. She was married Feb. 5, 1944, in Jacksonville, Fla., to Francis X. Staba, who died Oct. 6, 1989.

She was a homemaker. A resident of the  Jefferson City area until 1998, she was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church.

Survivors include: two daughters, Patricia Carlisle, Bloomfield, Iowa, and Madelyn Baggett, Kingsport, Tenn.; one sister, Catherine Smith, Hazel Green, Ala.; and two granddaughters.

Graveside services will be at 1 p.m. Friday in Hawthorn Memorial Gardens. The Rev. David Conley will officiate.

Visitation will be from 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Friday at Freeman Mortuary.

Memorials are suggested to Wesley United Methodist Church.

RICE

Paul Revere Rice, 85, Farmington, formerly of  Jefferson City, died Jan. 19, 2000, at Parkland Health Center, Farmington.

He was born Jan. 25, 1914, in  Jefferson City, a son of William G. and Murty Mae Rice Rice. He was married Sept. 19, 1936, in New Bloomfield, to Mildred Katherene Dwight, who survives at the home.

A graduate of  Jefferson City High School, he was employed at Oberman's Manufacturing Co. He then worked at the Missouri Department of Mental Health until his retirement.

He was a member of Immanuel Baptist Church.

Other survivors include: two sons, James G. Rice, Kansas City, and Ronald Paul Rice, Farmington; one brother, Donald G. Rice, California; five grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Buescher Memorial Home. The Rev. Thomas W. Nelson will officiate. Burial will be in Hawthorn Memorial Gardens.

Visitation will be from 10-11 a.m. Saturday.

Memorials are suggested to the American Diabetes Association or the American Heart Association.

THOMPSON

Roy L. Thompson, 69,  Jefferson City, died Jan. 20, 2000, at Capital Region Medical Center.

He was born Sept. 14, 1930, in  Jefferson City, a son of Martin W. and Geneva M. Hartley Thompson. His mother survives in  Jefferson City. He was married June 9, 1949, in  Jefferson City, to JoAnn Landrum, who died June 25, 1994. He was married April 4, 1996, in  Jefferson City, to Mary Gill, who survives at the home.

A 1949 graduate of  Jefferson City High School, he was an Army veteran of the Korean War. He was housekeeping supervisor at Memorial Community Hospital for 13 years, retiring in 1992.

Other survivors include: one son, Marc A. Thompson,  Jefferson City; one daughter, Mary K. Sinnett,  Jefferson City; three stepdaughters, Deborah S. Heinrich, Diana L. Hedges and Theresa L. Thrasher, all of  Jefferson City; one grandchild, seven step grandchildren and four step great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Freeman Mortuary. Graveside services with military honors will be in Elston Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m today.

Memorials are suggested to the Hospice of  Jefferson City and Mid-Missouri.

WELLER

The Rev. Jack E. Weller, 77,  Jefferson City, died Jan. 20, 2000, at Oak View Living Center.

He was born Jan. 14, 1923, in Rochester, N.Y., a son of Henry C. and Hazel Smith Weller. He was married Nov. 26, 1949, in Rochester, to Jeanette Merritt, who survives at the home.

A graduate of Rochester Public School, he graduated from the University of Rochester in 1945 and from Union Theological Seminary in 1948. He was ordained in the Presbyterian Church, U.S.A. in 1948.

He served in the Office of Strategic Services in World War II. He pastored in Lima, New York, before directing the West Virginia Mountain Project. He then was minister at large for eastern Kentucky. He founded the Coalition for Appalachian Ministries and wrote "Yesterday's People: Life in Contemporary Appalachia." He was instrumental in the regulation of strip mining of coal; when national legislation was passed, he attended the bill signing at the White House.

He moved to  Jefferson City in 1979, serving as associate general presbyter for the Missouri Union Presbytery, retiring in 1995. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church. An original board member of the Agape House, he helped organize a legislative lobbying group called Impact.

Other survivors include: one son, Steven Weller, Onalaska, Texas ; one daughter, Cecily Strang, Vero Beach, Fla.; one brother, Clifford Weller, Winchester, Va.; and four grandchildren.

Services will be at 5 p.m. Sunday at First Presbyterian Church. The Rev. R.W. Beard will officiate. Private graveside services and entombment will be at the mausoleum of Riverview Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4-5 p.m. Sunday in the church parlor.

Memorials are suggested to the Covenant Point Camp, c/o First Presbyterian Church.

Arrangements are under the direction of Freeman Mortuary.

BLAIR

Ruth E. Blair, 89, Eldon, died Jan. 19, 2000, at Miller County Nursing Home.

She was born Jan. 14, 1911, in Henley, a daughter of Preston and Doshia Farley Jenkins. She was married June 28, 1930, in Kansas City, Kan., to Lloyd P. Blair, who died Oct. 2, 1961.

She lived in Kansas City for 36 years, moving to Eldon in 1973. She worked for Midland-Wright Electronics in Kansas City, Kan. She was a member of Bakers Local 218A, Kansas City.

Survivors include: one daughter, Virginia Harp, Merriam, Kan.; two sisters, Elsie Wyrick, Eldon, and Emma Fisher, Kansas City, Kan.; and two grandsons.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Phillips Funeral Home, Eldon. The Rev. Jasper Hunter will officiate. Burial will be in Forest Hill Cemetery, Kansas City.

Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. Sunday.

Memorials are suggested to the Eldon First Baptist Church Building Fund.

BRUNE

Robert H. Brune, 65, Roach, died Jan. 20, 2000, at Lake Regional Health Center, Osage Beach.

He was born Feb. 27, 1934, in Kansas City, Kan., a son of Elmer and Mable Moss Brune. He was married May 3, 1969, in Fairmount, to Nancy Cook, who survives at the home.

He attended Kansas State University and worked as a mechanical engineer before retiring.

Other survivors include: two sons, Victor Martyn, Fort Campbell, Ky., and Robert A. Brune, Denver; one brother, Lowell Brune, Kansas City, Kan.; and three grandchildren.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Allee-Reed Funeral Home, Camdenton. Burial will be in Big Niangua Cemetery, Roach.

Visitation will be from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Monday.
