CALHOUN
David C. Calhoun, 87, California, died April 4, 2000, at Capital Region Medical Center.
He was born Oct. 7, 1912, near California, a son of William P. and Anna Laura Gibson Calhoun. He was married Oct. 24, 1943, in California, to Margaret Malee, who survives in California.
He was a 1930 graduate of California High School and received a bachelor's degree in chemical engineering from the University of Missouri-Columbia in 1934. A farmer, he owned Centennial Farm, south of California. He was a science teacher at California High School for 20 years until his retirement in 1977.
He was a member of United Methodist Church, California, and the Methodist Men of the church. He was a member of Moniteau County Farm Bureau and served on the board of Moniteau County Extension Services and ASCS Office. He was on the board of education at High Point and Harmony schools.
Other survivors include: one son, William Calhoun, Salina, Kan.; one daughter, Carol Powers, Painesville, Ohio; one brother, William H. Calhoun, Springfield; and three grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at United Methodist Church, California. The Rev. Carol Koenig will officiate. Burial will be at a later date.
Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. Friday at Bowlin-Cantriel Funeral Home, California.
Memorials are suggested to United Methodist Church Building Fund, 201 S. Oak, California, Mo. 65018; or California Nutrition Center, 107 W. Versailles Ave., California, Mo. 65018.
CLEVELAND
Ellen Marie Cooper Cleveland, 55, Columbia, died April 3, 2000, at Columbia Regional Hospital.
She was born Oct. 16, 1944, in Miller County, a daughter of Orville W. and Edna Luelva Wright Cooper.
A cashier at Wal-Mart, Columbia, she was a member of Immanuel Baptist Church, Columbia.
Survivors include: one daughter, Robin Cooper, Columbia; three sisters, Esther White , Eldon, Darlene Green, Meeker, Colo., and Rosemary Bogg, McGirk; two brothers, Howard L. Cooper, Sugar Creek, and Wayne M. Cooper, Lee's Summit.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Phillips Funeral Home, Eldon. The Rev. Chris Cook and the Rev. Jack Dilday will officiate. Burial will be in Greenmore Memorial Gardens, Barnett.
Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. today at Phillips Funeral Home, Eldon.
Memorials are suggested to the American Cancer Society.
GIBBS
Celeste Bernadine "Sally" Gibbs, 95, Westphalia, died April 4, 2000, at Westphalia Retirement Center.
She was born Oct. 14, 1904, in Westphalia, a daughter of Anton J. and Mary Hilkemeyer Fechtel. She was married to Walter S. Gibbs, who died May 19, 1969.
She was a teacher at Verhoff Rural School, near Westphalia. She was post-mistress at Westphalia Post Office and worked as a salesclerk at Famous-Barr, St. Louis, until her retirement.
She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Westphalia, and St. Ann's Sodality.
She is survived by nieces and nephews.
Private family graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Resurrection Cemetery, St. Louis. The Rev. William B. Ahrens will officiate.
Private family visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. today at Dulle-Trimble Funeral Home, Jefferson City, with a prayer service at 7 p.m. The Rev. Robert A. Kurwicki will officiate.
Memorials are suggested to St. Joseph Catholic Church, Westphalia; St. Joseph Catholic School; or a charity of the donor's choice.
JACKSON
A.B. "Bud" Jackson Jr., 86, Tebbetts, died April 1, 2000, in Jefferson City.
He was born Aug. 27, 1913, in Nevada, a son of Archie B. and Ruth Scarritt King Jackson. He was married May 15, 1938, in Jefferson City, to Helene Kemper, who died April 22, 1976.
He graduated from Jefferson City High School. A graduate of Missouri Valley College, Marshall, and the University of Missouri-Columbia, with degrees in English and journalism, he was a radio announcer for KWOS and KVOO, Tulsa, Okla.. He also was a reporter for the Jefferson City News-Tribune.
He worked for the Izaak Walton League, Chicago, before moving to Springfield as field director for the National Wildlife Federation. He worked for Sherman Kelly and Associates in Springfield and Jefferson City until his retirement.
A recipient of the I.T. "Ping" Bode Award for Conservation, he was a freelance writer for magazines, including "Field and Stream" and "Sports Afield." He was a member of the Cole County Chapter of the Conservation Federation of Missouri, Rotary International, and First Presbyterian Church.
Survivors include: one son, Archie Byron Jackson III, Columbia; one daughter, Helene Kay Yeager, Jefferson City; one sister, Lucille Schnieder, Jefferson City; four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
One daughter, Heather Diann Jackson, died in 1939. One granddaughter also preceded him in death.
Services will be at 6:30 p.m. Friday at Houser-Millard Funeral Home. The Rev. Rudolph W. Beard will officiate.
Visitation will be from 5:30-6:30 p.m. Friday.
Memorials are suggested to the charity of the donor's choice.
JONES
Mabel Fancher Jones, 91, Iberia, died April 4, 2000, at Riverside Hospital, Kankakee, Ill.
She was born Aug. 20, 1908, in Iberia, a daughter of James M. and Sarah Elizabeth Steen Workman. She was married Feb. 1, 1933, in Eldon, to Charles D. Fancher, who died Sept. 27, 1984. She was married Nov. 1, 1989, in Iberia, to Ernest Clark Jones, who died May 4, 1999.
She was a graduate of Iberia High School, the Iberia Academy and Drury College, Springfield. She attended the University of Missouri and was an English teacher for 33 years. She taught at schools in Spearman, Hickory Point, Mace, Brumley, Iberia, Tuscumbia, Swedeborg and Waynesville until her retirement in 1970.
She was a member of the National Education Association, the Waynesville KKI and Iberia Church of the Nazarene. She was past president of the Waynesville branch of the American Association of University Women, and first president of the Iberia Community Club.
She helped organize the Iberia Community Betterment Association.
Survivors include: two sons, Harold Brian Fancher, Puryear, Tenn., and Gary Fancher, Iberia; one daughter, Jane Ashcraft, Wilmington, Ill.; one stepdaughter, Verla Blue, Salem; eight grandchildren, 11 step grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, 17 step great-grandchildren and four step great-great-grandchildren.
One son, Richard Fancher, one daughter, Laura Fancher, and one granddaughter preceded her in death.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Rekus Funeral Home, Iberia. The Rev. John Bouldrey will officiate. Burial will be in Livingston Cemetery, near Iberia.
Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Friday.
MITCHEM
Rose Ann Widowski Hull Mitchem, 57, Raytown, formerly of Eldon, died April 3, 2000, at North Village Park, Moberly.
She was born Oct. 27, 1942, in Eldon, a daughter of Carl A. and Jessie O. Holst Widowski. She was married Feb. 16, 1990, in Eldon, to Charles Mitchem, who died in April 1998.
She worked for Dole Del Monte Cannery and was a member of Bethany Lutheran Church.
Survivors include: two sons, Kent Hull and Eric Hull; two sisters, Freda Flaugher, Raytown, and Ellen Spangrude, Los Angeles; and two grandchildren.
One daughter, Twila Ann Myers, preceded her in death.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Kidwell-Garber Funeral Home, Versailles. Burial will be in Hopewell Cemetery, near Barnett.
Visitation will be from 7-8:30 p.m. Friday.
NATIONS
Harel Edward Nations, 66, Macks Creek, died April 4, 2000, at Lake Regional Health Center, Osage Beach.
He was born Nov. 8, 1933, in Macks Creek, a son of Frank and Flossie Nations.
An assembly line worker for Ford Automotive, he was a member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church, Macks Creek, and UAW Local.
Survivors include: one son, Steve Nations, Camdenton; three daughters, Linda Nations, Macks Creek, Sandra Ginnings, Eldridge, and Brenda Ream, Linn Creek; five sisters, Lois Rogers, Camdenton, Lorene Merrell, Independence, Barbara Stoufer, Macks Creek, Flossie Steele, Eldon, and Frankie Merrell, Independence; four grandchildren and one great-grandson.
One grandson preceded him in death.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church, Macks Creek. The Rev. Dean Rooffener will officiate. Burial will be in Pleasant Grove Cemetery, Macks Creek.
Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. today at Hedges Funeral Home, Macks Creek.
WIGHTMAN
Elizabeth R. Wightman, 96, Camdenton, died April 3, 2000, at Lake Regional Health Center, Osage Beach.
She was born April 1, 1904, in Gibbon, Neb., a daughter of John and Rosalie Kucera Prochaska. She was married May 15, 1936, in Brady, Neb., to Roger C. Wightman, who died in 1973.
She was a first- and fourth-grade teacher in the Camdenton School system for more than 40 years. She had lived in the Lake area for more than 50 years. She was a member of the Retired Teacher Association, Women's Literary Club of Camden County and Camdenton First Baptist Church, where she taught Sunday and Bible school.
Survivors include: one son, Roger L. Wightman, Whitehouse, Texas ; one daughter, Ronna Fitts, Fort Lee, N.J.; one brother, James Prochaska, Ravenna, Neb.; and three grandchildren.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Allee-Reed Funeral Home, Camdenton. The Rev. Tom Ford will officiate. Burial will be in Dale Blair Memorial Cemetery, Camdenton.
Visitation will be from 4-6 p.m. today.
