BECK

August "Augie" Martin Beck, 73,  Jefferson City, died May 4, 2000, at  Jefferson City Manor Care Center.

He was born Aug. 8, 1926, in  Jefferson City, a son of August L.H. and Bertha Krueger Beck. He was married March 19,1950, in  Jefferson City, to Anna May Gwyn, who survives at the home.

He attended Central School and Immanuel Lutheran School at Honey Creek. He graduated from  Jefferson City High School. An Army veteran of World War II, he was a ceramic tile layer and marble mason for many years.

He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church since 1958. Prior to that, he was a member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church at Honey Creek. He belonged to the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1003, American Legion Post 5, Bricklayers Union Local 15 and the National Rifle Association.

Other survivors include: two sons, Daniel Beck and Charles Beck, both of  Jefferson City; one daughter, Sheila Beck, Kansas City; three sisters, Elizabeth Mueller and Mary Nebel, both of  Jefferson City, and Grace Huey, New Bloomfield; and two granddaughters.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Trinity Lutheran Church. The Rev. John Hobratschk will officiate. Burial will be in Zion Lutheran Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4-6 p.m. today at Houser-Millard Funeral Home.

Memorials are suggested to the Trinity Lutheran Church Building Fund.

DANIEL

Clarence "Salty" Daniel, 77,  Jefferson City, died May 5, 2000, at St. Marys Health Center.

He was born Aug. 9, 1922, in East Prairie, a son of Herman E. and Floye Smith Daniel. He was married Aug. 9, 1947, in  Jefferson City, to Betty Jo Haar, who survives at the home.

He graduated in 1941 from East Prairie High School and in 1950 from the University of Missouri with a bachelor's degree in wildlife conservation. An Army Air Corps veteran of World War II, he worked for the Missouri Department of Conservation for 35 years.

He was a conservation agent from 1950 to 1960, manager of the Rockwoods Reservation Education Center in St. Louis from 1960 to 1967, and supervisor of acquisition for the Wildlife Division from 1967 to 1985.

He was named one of the 10 most outstanding professional wildlife conservationists in the United States by American Motors, and he produced the first wildlife television program in Missouri over KODE-TV in Joplin from 1955 to 1960.

He received a Joint Resolution of Commendation from the Missouri Legislature in 1985.

He was a member of American Ex-Prisoners of War, American Legion Post 5, VFW, Disabled American Veterans and Carthage Jaycees.

Other survivors include: one daughter, Kelly Brenner,  Jefferson City; one sister, Velma Oldham, East Prairie; and three grandchildren.

Services will be at a later date.

Memorials are suggested to the Parkinson's Disease Foundation Inc., 710 W. 168th St., New York, NY 10032-9982, or the American Ex-POW Department of Missouri, P.O. Box 362, Drexel, Mo. 64742.

Arrangements are under the direction of Dulle-Trimble Funeral Home.

HOLLIS

Robert Hollis, 75, Dixon, died May 5, 2000, at his home.

He was born May 11, 1924, in Dixon, a son of Robert and Sarah Creech Hollis. He was married Jan. 2, 1953, in St. Louis, to Mary Dickens, who survives at the home.

An Army veteran, he retired as a carpenter with the Department of Army, Civil Service, following several years of service. He was a member of Dixon Church of Christ.

Other survivors include: one son, Dale Wagner, Springfield; two brothers, Warren Hollis, Crocker, and Floyd Hollis, Fulton; three sisters, Sadie Rowden, Allie Hollis and Helen Hollis, all of Dixon; and one granddaughter.

One grandson preceded him in death.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Birmingham-Martin Funeral Home, Dixon. Brother Jacky Smart and Brother Charles Pitts will officiate. Burial will be in Dixon Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4-6 p.m. today and from 9-11 a.m. Monday.

KENNEDY

Glennon A. Kennedy Jr., 71, Montgomery Village, Md., formerly of Independence, died May 2, 2000.

He was born in Butte, Mont., a son of Glennon A. and Margaret Duffy Kennedy.

He graduated from Rockhurst High School and College and Georgetown Law School.

He served in the Army during the Korean War. He was an analyst with the Central Intelligence Agency until his retirement.

Survivors include: three brothers, Thomas J. Kennedy and John M. Kennedy, both of Independence, and Patrick A. Kennedy,  Jefferson City.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Martin's Catholic Church, Gaithersburg, Md. Burial will be in Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Rockville, Md.

Memorials are suggested to Rockhurst College, 1100 Rockhurst Road, Kansas City, Mo. 64110, or to a charity of the donor's choice.

SCHAFFER

Ethel Jacqueline "Jackie" Johnson Schaffer, 98, Camdenton, died May 5, 2000, at Windsor Estates, Camdenton.

She was born March 8, 1902, in Des Moines, Iowa, a daughter of Christopher Moxley "Mox" Turnipseed and Ella Mae "Nellie" Gift. She was married Aug. 25, 1934, to Robert Earl Johnson Sr., who died March 5, 1950. She was married Dec. 25, 1952, in Clay County, to Jack Robert Schaffer, who died July 8, 1978.

She had worked at the Loose Wiles Box Co., the Taylor Dry Goods Co. and the Cake Box Bakery.

She lived for many years in Camden Manors, Camdenton, and was an active member of Bible Baptist Church.

Survivors include: one son, Robert Earl Johnson Jr., St. Johns, Mich.; five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 9 a.m. Monday at Allee-Reed Funeral Home, Camdenton. The Rev. Robert Vander Berg will officiate. Burial will be at 2 p.m. in Forest Hills Cemetery, Kansas City.

Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. today.

SEARS

Elnora Agnus Sears, 77, Tuscumbia, died May 5, 2000, at Truman Memorial Veterans Hospital, Columbia.

She was born Oct. 23, 1922, in Olathe, Kan., a daughter of James E. and Mamie Roberts Thompson. She was married June 6, 1969, in Tuscumbia, to Ralph Sears, who preceded her in death.

A member of the Church of Christ, she was an Army clerk typist and a homemaker.

Survivors include: two sons, Joe Hillhouse, Tuscumbia, and Don Hillhouse, Hemet, Calif.; two brothers, Wayne Thompson, Eldon, and Donald Thompson, Tuscumbia; and three sisters, Earline Caldwell, Tuscumbia, Grace Dake and Belle Jordan, both of Eldon.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Phillips Funeral Home, Eldon. The Rev. Charles Caldwell will officiate. Burial will be in Tuscumbia Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Monday.

Memorials are suggested to the American Heart Association.

ELLEY

Velma M. Elley, 83, Baton Rouge, La., formerly of  Jefferson City, died May 7 at her home.

She was born Dec. 24, 1916, in Fort Dodge, Iowa, a daughter of John H. and Chloe Edith Wood Dalstein. She was married June 3, 1942, in St. Paul, Minn., to Joseph B. Elley, who died Sept. 4, 1995.

A  Jefferson City High School graduate, she was treasurer-manager of the Missouri Baptist Convention Credit Union from 1963 until she retired in 1978.

She was a charter member of  Jefferson City's Memorial Baptist Church. She was a member of the United Commercial Travelers of America, the Marcy Lucas Wood Chapter of the Daughters of the American Colonies and the Rio Grande Valley Quilt Guild.

Survivors include: one daughter, Susan M. Atherton, Baton Rouge, La.; two brothers, J. Edward Dalstein,  Jefferson City, and Vernon Dalstein, California; four sisters, Kathryn Roberson,  Jefferson City, Chloe McKee, Lebanon, Henrietta Cook, California, and Jane Bailey, Grand Junction, Colo.; and one granddaughter.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Freeman Mortuary. The Rev. Thomas W. Nelson will officiate. Burial will be in Hawthorn Memorial Gardens.

Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. Wednesday.

Memorials are suggested to a charity of the donor's choice.

GRANT

Mary "Bunk" Glovena Grant, 71, Meta, died May 6, 2000, in St. Charles.

She was born April 11, 1929, in New Florence, a daughter of Clem and Claire Potterbaum Nothstine. She was married June 7, 1945, in St. Louis, to Howard Herman Grant, who died Nov. 24, 1997.

She was a bus driver for the Orchard Farm School District, St. Charles County, until her retirement. She moved from St. Charles to Meta in 1984. She was a volunteer at: St. Elizabeth Nursing Home, St. Elizabeth; Meta Fire and Rescue Comm-Unity Ambulance; and fund-raising activities for St. Cecilia Catholic Church, Meta. She was a member of the Meta Quilters and the Meta Civic League.

Survivors include: two daughters, Margaret Seats and Reta Lauer, both of St. Charles; four sons, George Grant, Vernon Grant, Vincent Grant and Robert Grant, all of St. Charles; one sister, Viola Lubin, Creve Coeur; two brothers, Ben Nothstine, St. Charles, and Jay Nothstine, Aurora, Colo.; and 15 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 3-9 p.m. Tuesday at Rekus Funeral Home, Meta, with a prayer service at 7 p.m. The Rev. Manuel Seaton will officiate.

Memorials are suggested to the Meta Fire and Rescue Comm-Unity Ambulance, Southside Cemetery or Meta Civic League.
