LOETHEN

James Henry Loethen, 61, Hallsville, died Sept. 13, 2000, at Boone Hospital Center, Columbia.

He was born June 18, 1939, in St. Thomas, a son of Thomas H. and Mary A. Boessen Loethen. He was married Oct. 30, 1965, in Folk, to Marilyn Huhn, who survives.

A graduate of Helias High School and Capital Business College, he began his career in the farm record program at the University of Missouri. He then was employed by MFA Inc. for 30 years as auditor, purchasing manager, swine program director and area credit manager.

He co-owned and operated Loethen's Bookkeeping and Tax Service, and was a farmer. He was active in MFA Oil Co., Bulk Plant, board of directors; Boone County Water District 4, as board of directors president; and MFA Employee Credit Union, as a member of the credit committee.

He was a member of Holy Spirit Catholic Church, Centralia, Hallsville Community Development Association, the National Society of Accounts for Cooperatives, and a member and past officer of Knights of Columbus Council 7841.

He served as a board member of Boone County R-4 School District; president of MFA Employee Credit Union; president, vice president and treasurer of the Missouri Pork Producers; and as a member of the National Pork Producers, serving on the Federation Council, National State Evaluation Task Force and Pork Act Delegate Body.

He served on the Governor's Advisory Council on Agriculture, the Department of Agriculture Plant Industries Division Advisory Committee and various committees of the Boone County Extension Council. He was a past project leader of the Hallsville 4-H.

Other survivors include: one son, Michael James Loethen, Hallsville; two daughters, Susan Elaine Daigle, St. Charles, and Kelly Rose Armaly, Pasadena, Calif.; three brothers, Joseph L. Loethen,  Jefferson City, Thomas B. Loethen, St. Thomas, and Mark G. Loethen, Linn; one sister, Rosalyn A. Wieberg, St. Thomas; seven grandchildren; and four step grandchildren.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Columbia. Msgr. Bernard H. Boessen and the Rev. James Offutt will officiate. Burial will be in Centralia Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Saturday at Memorial Funeral Home, with a prayer service at 7:30 p.m.

Memorials are suggested to the American Heart Association, P.O. Box 30638, Columbia, Mo. 65205.

OLIVER

Anthony Joseph "Smokin' Joe" Oliver, 48, Fulton, died Sept. 14, 2000, at Boone Hospital Center, Columbia.

He was born Oct. 25, 1951, in Kansas City, Kan., a son of John A. Sr. and Elsie Mae Satchel Oliver. He was married Nov. 21, 1985, in Fulton, to Novarra Jean Taylor, who survives at the home.

He moved to Fulton 20 years ago and worked at Fulton Manor as housekeeping supervisor. He operated Smokin' Joe's Barbecue. He was a member of Second Baptist Church in Auxvasse and was studying with Jehovah's Witness.

Other survivors include: 10 children, Marvell Oliver, Sonya Oliver, Larita Oliver, Joseph Anthony Morrison, Gerald Oliver, Kenya Oliver, Keto Oliver, Kabron Oliver, Anthony Oliver and Michael Oliver; three sisters, Geraldine Oliver, Toni Oliver and Ellen Oliver; three brothers, Ronald Oliver, Leroy Oliver and Phillip Oliver; and 11 grandchildren.

His stepmother, Lula Mae Calhoun, preceded him in death.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Debo Funeral Home, Fulton. The Rev. Charles Jackson will officiate. Burial will be in Southside Cemetery.

Visitation will be from noon-2 p.m. Sunday.

STARK

William E. Stark, 80, Gravois Mills, died Sept. 14, 2000, at his home.

He was born July 28, 1920, in Tuscumbia, a son of David E. and Clara E. Hawks Stark. He was married Nov. 5, 1940, to Marguerite L. Scott, who died March 15, 1990.

He was a retired supervisor for Kansas City Power & Light.

Survivors include: one son, William D. Scott, Fairway, Kan.; one brother, Daniel D. Stark, Elk Grove Village, Ill.; two sisters, Betty June Thompson, Bartlesville, Okla., and Lois Conkle, Seattle, Wash.; and two grandchildren.

Graveside services will be at 4 p.m. today at Versailles Cemetery. The Rev. Gary DeWitt will officiate.

Memorials are suggested to the American Cancer Society.

Arrangements are under the direction of Kidwell-Garber Funeral Home, Versailles.

POWERS

The Rev. Donald E. 'Chesty' Powers, 72, St. Bernadette Catholic Church in Hermitage, died Sept. 14, 2000, at his home in Roach.

He was born Aug. 18, 1928, a son of John and Geneva Hurtt Powers.

He attended Normandy High School, Cardinal Glennon College and Kendrick Seminary, all in St. Louis. He studied at Conception Abbey Seminary from 1954-58 and was ordained by Cardinal Joseph Ritter in St. Louis Cathedral on March 22, 1958.

Powers served as an associate pastor at St. Augustine's and Blessed Sacrament Parishes, Kansas City, spent two years at Nativity of BVM in Independence and then was assigned to the archdiocese of LaPaz, Bolivia, from 1964-70. Returning to Kansas City, he served pastorates in St. Mary's parish in Nevada, 1970-78; Presentation of Our Lady parish in Lee's Summit, 1978-86; and the Kansas City parishes of Holy Cross, 1986-87, and St. Raphael, 1987 until he retired in 1993. After retiring, Powers became an assistant pastor for St. Anthony parish in Camdenton, and maintained an active ministry in Climax Springs and Hermitage in the  Jefferson City Diocese.

Survivors include: three brothers, Robert G. Powers, St. Louis, John W. Powers, St. Peters, and Joseph L. Powers, St. Charles; and four sisters, Betty L. Thomas, Hazelwood, Rosemary Uetrecht, Florissant, Barbara L. Burr, Manchester, and Carol S. Donton, Peoria, Ill.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 a.m. on Monday at St. Peter's Church. Bishop John R. Gaydos, the Rev. Joseph Donton, Msgr. Salvatore Polizzi and Rev. Don Nuener will officiate.

Visitation will be from 2-8 p.m. Sunday at the Houser-Millard Chapel with a prayer service at 7:30 p.m.

Additional visitation will be from 3:30-4 p.m. Monday in the Holy Cross Cemetery Chapel, Wildwood, with services at 4 p.m.

Memorials are suggested to the Kansas City Cathedral Choir, the Diocese of Kansas City -- St. Joseph Priest Retirement Fund at 300 East 36th Street, Kansas City, MO 64111 or for Masses.

CLAY

Louise Elizabeth Clay, 104,  Jefferson City, died Sept. 14, 2000, at Beverly Health and Rehabilitation Center.

She was born April 28, 1896, in Cole County, a daughter of John Harvey and Dora Ann Baughman Ousley. She was married in 1923 to William Bradbury Clay, who died on April 28, 1985.

She attended schools at Cole Junction, She was a homemaker and a member of the First Baptist Church.

Survivors include: two daughters, Dorothy Laverne Cox, Oceanside, Calif., and Sarah Ann Cain, Holts Summit; five grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Graveside services will be 11 a.m. Monday at Riverview Cemetery. The Rev. Thomas Nelson will officiate. Burial will be in Riverview Cemetery under the direction of the Buescher Memorial Home.

Memorials are suggested to the American Cancer Society.

SPENCER

Wilfred Baird Spencer, 80,  Jefferson City, died Sept. 14, 2000, at Capitol Region Medical Center.

He was born Oct. 25,1919, in Laddonia, a son of Raymond and Margaret Edmiston Spencer. He was married March 26, 1966, to Frances L. Gilmore, who died on Dec. 7, 1999.

A life-long resident of central Missouri, he graduated from Mexico High School and was a Navy veteran of World War II. He was employed by the A.P. Green Company, Mexico, for many years and then was employed as a testing technician with the Missouri Highway Department for 18 years before retiring in 1985.

He was a member of First United Methodist Church,  Jefferson City; Hebron Lodge No. 354 A.F. & A.M., Royal Arch Masons Chapter 27, Crusade Commandery 23, and Knights Templar, all in Mexico; Roy Sone VFW Post 1003; , Roscoe Enloe American Legion Post 5; and Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie 2693.

Survivors include: one daughter, Becky Ann Spencer Mathews, Thompson; one stepdaughter, JoAnn Surface,  Jefferson City; one stepson, J.C. Gillmore, Campbell, Ca.; four grandchildren, three stepgrandchildren, and 11 great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday in the Freeman Chapel. The Rev. Dorothy Lairmore will officiate. Graveside services with military honors will be in Riverview Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. Sunday with a Masonic service at 7 p.m.

Memorials are suggested to the Shriners Crippled Childrens Hospital, St. Louis.

HINDS

Marie Cecelia Hinds, 87, formerly of Gladstone, died Sept. 15, 2000, at St. Marys Health Center.

She was born April 23, 1913, in Falls City, Neb. Her husbands, Elmer Mosiman, Paul Branstetter and John Hinds, preceded her in death.

She lived in the Kansas City area for over 35 years and was a member of St. Gabriel Archangel Catholic Church.

Survivors include: two sons, Alan Mosiman, Castle Rock, Colo., and Paul Mosiman, Independence; a stepson, James Hinds, Kansas City; two daughters, Sharon Pope,  Jefferson City, and Mary Van Der Bie, Holland, Mich.; three stepdaughters, Mary Ann Pfitzner, Kansas City, Carol Hinds, Carroll Valley, Pa., and Jan Meyers, Toledo, Ohio; one brother, Gerard Timothy, Nebraska City, Neb.; one sister, Lois Foster, Milwaukee, Ore.; 19 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

The Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. Gabriel Archangel Catholic Church, Kansas City. Burial will be in Resurrection Cemtery under the direction of McGilley Antioch Chapel.

Visitation will be from 10-11 a.m. at the church.

Memorials are suggested to the Vitae Society or Missouri Right to Life,  Jefferson City.

McKINNEY

Thurman P. McKinney, 99, Tebbetts, died Sept. 16, 2000, at his home.

He was born Feb. 8, 1901, in Marion, a son of Joseph and Clara Belle Keerans McKinney. He was married Aug. 2, 1928, to Velma Lister, who survives at the home.

A resident of central Missouri for most of his life, he attended school in rural Cole County. He farmed in Callaway County for many years andwas a member of the New Hope Baptist Church, Marion, and Lodge 596 Order of the Oddfellows, Tebbetts.

Other survivors include: one son, Herbert T. McKinney, Holts Summit; one daughter, Clara Frances Meyer, Tebbetts; six grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at the New Hope Cemetery near Marion.

Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. Sunday at Freeman Mortuary.

Memorials are suggested to Lodge 596 Order of Oddfellows.

SCHARDT

Joyce Pitman Schardt, 74, Vero Beach, Fla., died Sept. 8, 2000.

She was born Feb. 15, 1926, in Winchester, Mass., a daughter of Forrest L. and Thelma C. Cummings Pitman. She was married to David J. Schardt for 49 years.

She received her degree from Smith College, a masters from Washington University and did her doctoral studies at the University of Missouri-St. Louis. She was a teacher for the Parkway School District, St. Louis, for 22 years.

She is survived by one daughter, Dianne S. Lowry, central Missouri; one son, David P. Schardt; and two grandchildren.

A family memorial service was held Sept. 12 in Vero Beach under the direction of the Lowther Cremation Service.

Memorials are suggested to the VNA/Hospice of Indian River County, 1111 36th Street, Vero Beach, Fla.
