SQUIRES

Flavian Dix Squires, 70, Tipton, died Oct. 12, 2000, at St. Marys Health Center.

She was born July 4, 1930, in Syracuse, a daughter of Peter J. and Emma Kramer Knipp. She was married July 24, 1948, in Tipton, to Lewis E. Dix, who died April 16, 1994. She was married in 1996 in Tipton to Aubrey Henry Squires, who survives at the home.

She was a 1947 graduate of Tipton High School. She was a member of St. Andrew's Catholic Church, Tipton, St. Andrew's Altar Society and the American Legion Auxiliary.

She worked at Biltwell Manufacturing Company until the business closed.

Other survivors include: one son, David Dix, Tipton; one stepson, Robert Squires, Versailles; one daughter, Pam Williams, Tipton; six brothers, Vernon Knipp and David Knipp, both of St. Louis, Peter Knipp, Indiana, Dennis Knipp, Pilot Grove, Melvin Knipp and Leroy Knipp, both of Tipton; two sisters, Emma Rose Dubbert, Tipton, and Joann Stetzenbach, Sedalia; and four grandchildren.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Andrew's Catholic Church. Fr. Henry Reichert will officiate. Burial will be in St. Andrew's Cemetery, Tipton.

Visitation will begin at 1:30 p.m. Sunday at Meisenheimer-Griswold Funeral Home, with a St. Andrew's Altar Society prayer service at 3 p.m. and a prayer service at 7:30 p.m.

DAVIS

Edward Lee Davis Jr., 71, Fulton, died Oct. 15, 2000, at Boone Hospital Center.

He was born Aug. 5, 1929, a son of Edward Sr. and Helen Grier Davis. His mother survives in Angleton, Texas . He was married Jan. 28, 1951, in Fulton, to Betty Oliver, who survives at the home.

He attended Mexico public schools, Central Methodist College and the University of Missouri.

He earned a master's degree in social work at the University of Missouri and worked as a psychiatric social worker with the Missouri Department of Mental Health for 39 years.

An Army veteran, he was an elder at First Presbyterian Church in Fulton. He was a member of the American Cancer Society and a volunteer with Kingdom Hospice. He served on the Fulton Planning and Zoning Commission.

Other survivors include: two sons, Dr. Kent Davis, Paris, Ky., and Mark Davis, Norfolk, Va.; one daughter, Jana Oestreich, Fulton; one sister, Donna Meyer, Angleton; one brother, Ron Davis, Short Hill, N.J.; and four grandchildren.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Debo Funeral Home, Fulton. The Rev. Hal LaMert will officiate. Burial will be in Hillcrest Cemetery, Fulton.

Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. today.

Memorials are suggested to First Presbyterian Church, the Garrett Animal Shelter or the American Cancer Society.

CARNAHAN

Gov. Mel Carnahan, 66,  Jefferson City, died Oct. 16, 2000, from injuries sustained in an airplane crash in  Jefferson County.

He was born Feb. 11, 1934, in Birch Tree, a son of A.S.J. and Mary Schupp Carnahan. He was married June 12, 1954, in Washington , D.C., to Jean Carpenter, who survives at the home.

He received a bachelor's degree in business administration from George Washington University and graduated from the University of Missouri-Columbia Law School in 1959 with honors - Law Review and Order of the Coif. He was an Air Force veteran. A past resident of Rolla, he began a lifelong career in public service in 1961, when he was elected municipal judge in Rolla.

Two years later, he won a seat in the Missouri House of Representatives, where he was elected majority floor leader in his second term. After four years in the Missouri House, he returned to Rolla, where he built a successful private law practice. In 1980, he was elected state treasurer, serving four years, and in 1988 he was elected the state's 42nd lieutenant governor.

In 1992, he was elected 51st governor of the State of Missouri, and currently was serving his second term in office. At the time of his death, he was a candidate for the U.S. Senate.

Among accomplishments of his administration were: the Outstanding Schools Act, a comprehensive package of reforms, new resources and accountability measures to improve Missouri's public schools; major tax relief for working families; welfare reform; anti-crime laws; and primary health care services for previously uninsured Missouri children. He held a lifelong commitment to issues of education.

He was a member of First Baptist Church, Rolla, and a 33rd degree Mason. He was chairman of the Southern Governors' Association and the Democratic Governors' Association.

Other survivors include: two sons, Russ Carnahan and Tom Carnahan, both of St. Louis; one daughter, Robin Carnahan, St. Louis; one brother, Bob Carnahan, Rolla; and two grandsons.

One son, Roger Andrew "Randy" Carnahan, also died in the crash.

Services will be at 11:30 a.m. Friday on the south lawn of the Missouri State Capitol.

The governor will lie in state from noon-8 p.m. Thursday at the Missouri Governor's Mansion. He also will lie in state from 10-10:50 a.m. Saturday at First Baptist Church, Rolla. Private family services and burial will be in Carson Hill Cemetery, Ellsinore.

Memorials are suggested to the Children's Trust Fund, a not-for-profit charitable organization that helps abused and underprivileged children, P.O. Box 1641,  Jefferson City, Mo. 65102-1641.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Missouri National Guard, Missouri Department of Public Safety and Houser-Millard Funeral Home.

CARNAHAN

Roger Andrew "Randy" Carnahan, 44, Rolla, died Oct. 16, 2000, from injuries sustained in an airplane crash in  Jefferson County.

He was born Jan. 26, 1956, a son of Mel and Jean Carpenter Carnahan. His mother survives at the home. His father, Gov. Mel Carnahan, also died in the crash.

An attorney, he practiced general law as managing partner at Carnahan, Carnahan & Hickle, Rolla. He owned and operated Carnahan Farms, and was a principal in Carnahan & Associates, an international consulting firm.

A former Democratic committeeman and treasurer with the 1992 Carnahan for Governor campaign, he had been political advisor for Gov. Carnahan. He was a regular pilot on political trips during the governor's bid for the U.S. Senate.

He was a member of the Missouri Bar Association, the Association of Trial Lawyers of Missouri and the Rolla Kiwanis Club. He served on the board of directors for Central Ozarks Mental Health Services Inc.; Big Brothers and Big Sisters; and Achieving Better Lifestyles for the Elderly (ABLE) Commission.

He was past president of the Phelps County Bar Association and the Heartland Chapter of the Missouri Pilots Association. In 1991, he was selected to be a member of the Rotary International Group Study Exchange Program in Nigeria. He was an Eagle Scout.

He attended First Baptist Church, Rolla, where he served as chairman of the Board of Trustees. He was a member of the church finance and personnel committees.

Other survivors include: two brothers, Russ Carnahan and Tom Carnahan, both of St. Louis; and one sister, Robin Carnahan, St. Louis.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at First Baptist Church, Rolla. Private family services and burial will be in Carson Hill Cemetery, Ellsinore.

Visitation will be from 10-10:50 a.m. Saturday at the church.

Arrangements are under the direction of Null and Son Funeral Home, Rolla, and Houser-Millard Funeral Home.

WORKMAN

Services were today for Raymond Workman Jr., 70, Iberia, who died Oct. 17, 2000, at his home.

He was born Sept. 20, 1930, in Clayton, a son of Raymond Sr. and Flossie Olean Crum Workman. His mother survives in Iberia. He was married Nov. 24, 1949, in Valley Park, to Lorean Rowden, who survives at the home.

He was a retired self-employed carpenter and worked on the Frisco Railroad, St. Louis. He was a member of the Faith Tabernacle Church, Iberia.

Other survivors include: two sons, David Workman and Kevin Workman, both of Iberia; eight daughters, Norma Dake, Climax Springs, Barbara Franks, Fort Mills, S.C., Rita Jeffries, Brumley, Sandra Holmes,  Jefferson City, and Charlotte Stark, Lorna Workman, Rhonda Crawford and Lisa Huddleston, all of Iberia; two brothers, Leroy Workman, Fenton, and Jackie Workman, Brumley; one sister, Janet Helton, Iberia; 17 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Services were at Rekus Funeral Home, Iberia. The Rev. David King and the Rev. Floyd Dake will officiate. Burial was in Mount Union Cemetery, near Brumley.

Memorials are suggested to the Raymond Workman Jr. Memorial Fund.

HATTON

Betty Jane Henderson Hatton, 64, Columbia, died Oct. 14, 2000, at University of Missouri-Columbia Hospital and Clinics.

She was born Dec. 13, 1935, in Auxvasse, a daughter of Joseph O. and Carrie Henderson. Her mother, Carrie Mathis, survives in  Jefferson City. She was married Jan. 31, 1954, in Columbia, to Calvin Hatton, who preceded her in death.

She was a member of Second Baptist Church, Auxvasse, and a former member of the youth choir and Red Circle Girls. She attended Sunday school.

Other survivors include: two daughters, Beverly O. Versey, and Maritta K. Hatton, both of Columbia; two sons, Reginald W. Hatton, Columbia, and Joseph O. Hatton, Kansas City; three sisters, Jean C. Crayton and Marva J. Brown, both of Kansas City, and Sandra D. Hudson, Atlanta, Ga.; 10 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at St. Luke United Methodist Church, Columbia. The Rev. Ray Warren will officiate. Burial will be in Higginsville Missouri State Veterans Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. Thursday at Warren Funeral Chapel, Columbia.

BAHR

Services were Saturday for Richard K. Bahr Sr., 60, Belmont, Wis., formerly of  Jefferson City, who died Oct. 10, 2000, at St. Mary's Medical Center, Madison, Wis.

He was born Jan. 2, 1940, in Elgin, Ill., a son of Rudolf and Frieda Bahr. His mother survives.

Other survivors include: three daughters, Cindy Eggen, Centertown, Carla Powell, Indianapolis, and Christina Bahr, Mount Horeb, Wis.; one sister; five brothers; and five grandchildren.

One son, Richard Bahr Jr., died in 1995.

Burial was in North Plato, Ill.

Arrangements were under the direction of Bendorf Funeral Home, Plattville, Wis.

CLIBURN

Lloyd Cliburn, 85, Centertown, died Oct. 17, 2000, at St. Marys Health Center.

He was born Jan. 12, 1915, in Lohman, a son of Burdette H. and Tracy Ann Blank Cliburn. He was married in 1937 to Ruth Ellen Brandon, who survives in Centertown.

A graduate of Centertown High School, he was a self-employed gravel and topsoil hauler in the Central Missouri area. He did contract erosion and channel control work on the Missouri River. He farmed in the Centertown area, where he grew and marketed pumpkins.

Other survivors include: five sons, Alan Cliburn, Leon Cliburn and Oliver Cliburn, all of Centertown, Sam Cliburn, St. Martins, and Jerry Cliburn, Russellville; one daughter, Alice Kliethermes,  Jefferson City; one brother, Bernard Cliburn, Centertown; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

One son, Steven Louis Cliburn, died in 1958.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Scrivner-Morrow Funeral Home, Russellville. The Rev. Doug Walter will officiate. Burial will be in Enloe Cemetery, near Russellville.

Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. Thursday.

Memorials are suggested to the American Heart Association.
