THOMAS

Isabelle M. Thomas, 96,  Jefferson City, died Oct. 25, 2000, at her home.

She was born July 8, 1904, in Spokane, Wash., a daughter of John A. and Rosalie G. Dwyer McCraken. She was married Oct. 22, 1942, in Phoenix, Ariz., to James Lee Thomas, who survives at the home.

She attended Kansas City schools and was a 1926 graduate of the University of Kansas. She worked for the American Red Cross and was a social worker in Arizona. She was a member of the Washington Women's Club in Phoenix and of the Presbyterian Church in Lee's Summit.

She also is survived by nieces and nephews.

Private family services will be held.

Arrangements are under the direction of Houser-Millard Funeral Home.

WARMAN

Velma Lee Warman, 58, Lewisville, Texas , formerly of Camdenton, died Oct. 28, 2000, at her home.

She was born April 5, 1942, in Climax Springs, a daughter of Sidney and Zelma Ritter Miller. Her mother survives in Camdenton.

She was a homemaker and a Baptist.

Other survivors include: one son, Gary Warman, Houston, Texas ; two daughters, Paula Bobo, Strafford, and Nora Thomas, Lewisville; three brothers, Sam Ellis, Kansas City, and Dan Ellis and John Canfield, both of Camdenton; three sisters, Lois Jones, Montreal, and Rose Warner and Connie Canfield, both of Camdenton; 10 grandchildren and one great-grandson.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Hedges Funeral Home, Camdenton. Burial will be in Decauterville Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Wednesday.

HOST

Victor Dennis Host, 60, Barnett, died Oct. 28, 2000, at his home.

He was born June 3, 1940, in Leeds, N.D., a son of Victor and Eleanor Cecilia Anderson Host.

He was a retired accountant and an Army veteran.

The remains were cremated.

Arrangements were under the direction of Kidwell-Garber Funeral Home, Versailles.

KIDWELL

Desta Frances Kidwell, 93, Tuscumbia, died Oct. 29, 2000, in  Jefferson City.

She was born Aug. 9, 1907, in Passover, a daughter of John E. and Ida Bell Clark Blankenship. She was married May 31, 1936, in Camdenton, to Charles J. Kidwell, who died April 25, 1994.

She began teaching in 1931 and taught in Miller and Camden counties. She received a teaching degree from Central Missouri Teacher's College, Warrensburg. She retired from the Eldon School District in 1969. She was a member of the Missouri Retired Teachers Association and the First Baptist Church, Eldon.

She is survived by two nephews, including Curtis Blankenship, Rocky Mount, and five nieces, including LaVerne Leffert, Eldon, Virgie Marler, Camdneton, and Daisey King, Brumley.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Phillips Funeral Home, Eldon. Jim Kruse will officiate. Burial will be in Greenmore Memorial Gardens, Barnett.

Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. today.

Memorials are suggested to Miller County Care Center Christmas Fund or the First Baptist Church of Eldon Building Fund.

DUNNINGTON

Maurine B. Dunnington, 87, Las Vegas, formerly of Gravois Mills,, died Oct. 27, 2000, at Summerlin Hospital, Las Vegas.

She was born March 15, 1913, in Emporia, Kan., a daughter of Thomas and Alice Maude White Booth. She was married July 15, 1933, to Kenneth W. Dunnington, who died May 26, 1994.

A former resident of Versailles and Stover, she was a retired office manager for a chemical company. She was a member of the Presbyterian Church, Overland Park, Kan.

Survivors include one son, Howard Dunnington, Las Vegas, and one granddaughter.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Kidwell-Garber Funeral Home, Versailles. The Rev. Diane Miller will officiate. Graveside services will be at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday in Floral Hills Memorial Gardens, Kansas City.

Visitation will be from 9-10 a.m. Wednesday.

Memorials are suggested to the Golden Age Living Center, Stover.

BLANKE

Clifford Egar Blanke, 90, Eldon, died Oct. 30, 2000, at his home.

He was born Oct. 24, 1910, in Illinois, a son of William F. and Anna Mae Nauman Blanke.

He was a 1928 graduate of Mount Vernon High School, Mount Vernon, Ill. He was an Army veteran of World War II. He owned and operated his own retail store.

Survivors include one sister, Alveria Budslick, Carbondale, Ill.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Rekus Funeral Home, Iberia. The Rev. William Wilkerson will officiate.

Visitation will be from 10:30-11 a.m. Friday.

BECK

William James Beck, 79,  Jefferson City, died Oct. 31, 2000, at St. Marys Health Center.

He was born Aug. 2, 1921, in Fredricktown, a son of Henry O. and Dewey Mae Heitman Beck. He was married March 8, 1947, in Farmington, to Olga Lucille "Jess" Jesperon, who survives at the home.

An Army veteran of World War II, he was a graduate of Flat River High School. He received a bachelor's degree in chemistry from Southeast Missouri State University, Cape Girardeau; a master's degree in bacteriology from the University of Missouri-Columbia; and a Ph.D. in epidemiology from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, Mich.

He worked at O'Rielly T.B. Hospital, Springfield, and the Missouri Department of Health laboratory. He then moved to Gig Harbor, Wash., where he was director of the Marine Science Laboratory. He worked for one year at the District of Columbia Health Department.

He then joined the United States Public Health Service of the Surgeon General's Office. He was director of the Arctic Health Research Center, Fairbanks, Alaska, and was promoted to the North Eastern Federal Public Health Regional Office, Boston.

He moved to the Western Federal Public Regional Office, San Francisco, retiring in 1982 with the rank of captain. He returned to  Jefferson City, where he was deputy director of the Missouri Department of Health for two years.

He was a member and lifetime deacon at First Christian Church, where he also served on church committees. He was a life member of American Legion Roscoe Enloe Post 5, and a past state officer of Lions International. He was past state president of T.R.O.A. and served as an ombudsman at Heisinger Retirement Center. He was a drummer for Glen Gonder's Volunteer Band, which performs at nursing homes.

Other survivors include: two sons, Michael W. Beck, Lake Nehai, and Ronald G. Beck,  Jefferson City; one brother, John Henry Beck, St. Louis; and two granddaughters.

One son, James Lynn Beck, died in 1962.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Houser-Millard Funeral Home. The Rev. Lawrence W. Veatch will officiate. Graveside services, with military honors, will be at 2 p.m. Saturday in Hillview Memorial Gardens Cemetery, Farmington.

Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home, and from 1:30-2 p.m. Saturday at the cemetery.

Memorials are suggested to the National Kidney Foundation or the American Heart Association.

BENFER

Kenneth John Benfer, 70, Iberia, died Oct. 30, 2000, at Osage Beach Health Care Center.

He was born Nov. 28, 1929, in Union County, Pa., a son of Ammon F. and Buelah Verdilla Baker Benfer. He was married May 29, 1948, in Sunbury, Pa., to Doris Patsy Fulkroad, who died Jan. 30, 1990. He was married July 3, 1993, in Eldon, to Dolores Faye Hutchinson, who survives at the home.

He was a retired Army veteran of the Vietnam War. He was a member of the Loyal Order of the Moose Lodge 1408, Eau Claire, Wis.; the Association of the United States Army, Fort Leonard Wood; a lifetime member of VFW Post 4956, Crocker; and the Iberia Congregational Church.

Other survives include: one son, Kenneth Paul Benfer, Phoenix; three daughters, Belinda Moody and Debra Conner, both of Iberia, and Diane Bonnin, Eau Claire; one stepson, Russell Landon, Eldon; two stepdaughters, Deborah Landon and Reba Stone, both of Eldon; three brothers, Charles Bruss, Milton, Pa., Ammon Benfer, Muncy, Pa., and Aaron Benfer, Watsontown, Pa.; two sisters, Lydia Walter, Mifflinburg, Pa., and Eleanor Wallize, Milton; 15 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Rekus Funeral Home, Iberia. The Rev. Ellis Livingston will officiate. Burial with full military honors will be in Freedom Cemetery, near Dixon.

Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. today.

Memorials are suggested to the American Diabetes Association.

WHALEN

Richard F. Whalen VI, 93, Hannibal, died Oct. 30, 2000, at Hannibal Regional Hospital.

He was born Dec. 22, 1906, in Hannibal, a son of Richard F. and Margaret Catherine Burke Whalen. He was married June 1, 1933, in Hannibal, to Celeste H. Moore, who died July 15, 1996. He was married May 10, 1997, to Mildred G. Morris Deeter, who died Jan. 15, 1998.

He was a graduate of St. Meinrad High School, St. Meinrad, Ind., and attended college at Conception Abbey, Conception.

He was a licensed pharmacist for more than 50 years and worked for Hoffbauer Drug Company, Hannibal. He was a sales representative for Parke-Davis for three years. He owned and operated Whalen Pharmacy from 1948 to 1969 and operated the Hannibal Clinic pharmacy for six years. After retirement, he worked as a relief pharmacist in Northeast Missouri.

A Navy veteran, he was a 50-year member of the American Legion and served as a president of the Lions Club. He was a fourth-degree member of the Knights of Columbus. He was a past president of the Missouri Pharmacy Association and the Northeast Missouri Pharmacy Association. He was on the city council for eight years, serving as president protem and mayor.

Survivors include: one daughter, Kathleen Dorst, Topeka, Kan.; three sons, Richard F. Whalen VII, Moreno Valley, Calif., Thomas M. Whalen,  Jefferson City, and Patrick B. Whalen, Hope, Idaho; 13 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Holy Family Church, Hannibal. The Rev. Mike Quinn and the Rev. Thomas M. Whalen will officiate. Burial will be in Grand View Burial Park, Hannibal.

Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. Thursday at James O'Donnell Funeral Home, Hannibal, with a prayer service at 7:30 p.m.

Memorials are suggested to the Holy Family Church.
