PENN

Marshall Miller Penn, 79,  Jefferson City, died Nov. 23, 2000, at Missouri Veterans Home, Mexico.

He was born April 9, 1921, in Kansas City, Kan., a son of Humphrey Marshall Penn and Blanche M. Miller Penn. He was married Dec. 12, 1947, in Cole County to Dorothy Barnett, who died Dec. 25, 1987. He was then married July 2, 1989, in Cole County, to Delores Jean Anderson, who survives at the home.

He was a 1939 graduate of St. Joseph, Michigan, High School. He received a bachelor of music education degree in 1943, and a master of music education degree in 1947 from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. He was a member of the Lincoln University faculty for 42 years until he retired in May 1989. He served as chairman of the Fine Arts Department and was director of the Lincoln University Band and the Lincoln University Symphony. He taught music history, instrumental conducting and band and orchestra organization. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, serving with the 92nd Division in the European Theater, and also was assistant band director and trombonist with a 35-member Army group. He was a member of Grace Episcopal Church, Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity,  Jefferson City Optimist Club, a life member of the University of Michigan Alumnae Association and a past president of the  Jefferson City United Investment Club.

Other survivors include: a step-daughter, Karen I. Davis, Ashland; a step-son, Darwin Davis Jr., White Plains, N.Y.; a step-grandson; two brothers, Henry Penn,  Jefferson City and William Penn, Washington , D.C.

Services will be held at 7 p.m. Monday at Dulle-Trimble Funeral Home. The Rev. Harvel Sanders will officiate. Burial with military honors will be held later in the week at Hawthorn Memorial Gardens.

Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Memorials are suggested to the Marshall Miller Penn Music Scholarship Fund at the Lincoln University Foundation.

TREMAINE

Anna Ruth Tremaine, 78,  Jefferson City, died Saturday, Nov. 25, 2000, at her home.

She was born Aug. 3, 1922, at Eugene, the daughter of Elmer and Lena Buster Ekstam. She was married March 21, 1941, at  Jefferson City, to Sam E. Tremaine, who survives at the home.

She attended school at Eugene and was a graduate of Eugene High School. She was a member of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, and was a member of the Church Women United. She was a volunteer for the Meals on Wheels program for many years, and was active in the Cardiac Rehabilitation Program. She had been active in church work and had cooked at the Church Youth Camps for many years. She was a homemaker and had also been employed at Oberman's Pants Factory and had been a cook in the dietary department at Memorial Community Hospital (now Capital Region Medical Center).

Other survivors include: two sons, Stephan D. Tremaine,  Jefferson City, and John Tremaine, Holts Summit; two daughters, Patricia Ann Tremaine and Clara Elizabeth Tremaine, both of  Jefferson City; and five grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by one son, Sammy Tremaine, who died in May 1994; and one infant daughter.

Services will be held 10 a.m. Tuesday at Buescher Memorial Home. The Revs. Garland Land, Patricia Tremaine and Clara Tremaine will officiate. Burial will follow at Hawthorn Memorial Gardens.

Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Memorials are suggested to the Jacob and Joseph Tremaine College Fund.

LOWE

Bessie "Marie" Lowe, 65, California, died Nov. 26, 2000, at St. Marys Health Center.

She was born June 25, 1935, in Many Islands, Ark., a daughter of Lymon W. and Bessie Gertrude Robinson Fuller. She was married June 4, 1953, in Sharp County, Ark., to John C. Lowe, who died Dec. 27, 1999.

She worked as a nursing assistant in  Jefferson City, and as a cook in California. She was a member of Lebanon Baptist Church, McGirk.

Survivors include: two sons, Johnnie R. Lowe and Tommie L. Lowe, both of California; three daughters, Brenda M. Evans, Hermann, and Betty S. Salmons and Mary Louise Lowe, both of California; three brothers, Frank Edward Fuller, Rockford, Ill., Lymon Eugene Fuller, Thayer, and Charles Floyd Fuller, Hardy, Ark.; 11 grandchildren; and great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Bowlin-Cantriel Funeral Home, California. The Rev. Frank Whitney will officiate. Burial will be in McGirk Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. Tuesday.

Memorials are suggested to a charity of the donor's choice.

WOOD

Eddie Wood, 76, Eldon, died Nov. 26, 2000, in Eldon.

He was born Aug. 7, 1924, in Eldon, a son of William E. and Laurel Burris Wood. He was married Feb. 9, 1944, in Eldon, to Sophie Hill, who survives at the home.

An Army veteran of World War II, he was a self-employed carpenter. He was a Baptist minister, preaching at Union Baptist Church, Rocky Mount, and New Harmony Baptist Church, Eldon. He also raised cattle.

Other survivors include: five sons, Kenny Wood, Don Wood, Phil Wood and Jim Wood, all of Eldon, and Danny Wood, Eugene; one daughter, Donna Duncan, Eldon; three brothers, Bill Wood, Kansas City, Kan., and Clayton Wood and Harold Wood, both of Eldon; four sisters, Wanda Vernon, Elouise Martin and Mary Cooper, all of Tuscumbia, and Fern Marcantonio,  Jefferson City; 15 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Phillips Funeral Home, Eldon. Gerald Nelson will officiate. Burial will be in Tol Wood Cemetery, Eldon.

Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. today.

Memorials are suggested to the American Heart Association.

WELLS

Elbert C. Wells, 62, Eldon, died Nov. 23, 2000, at his home.

He was born March 4, 1938, a son of Leonard and Rosetta Kohler Wells.

He owned and operated Wells Glass Service, Osage Beach, since 1977.

Survivors include: three sons, Chris Wells, Camdenton, and Steve Wells and Clayton Wells, both of Eldon; two daughters, Veronica Harrison, Olean, and Stacy Bockelman, High Point; two brothers, Joe Wells, Tulsa, Okla., and Vernie Wells, Mountain Home, Ark.; and eight grandchildren.

Private family services will be held at a later date.

Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. Thursday at Hedges Funeral Home, Osage Beach.

HAWKEN

Jessie Bill Hawken, 68, Kaiser, died Nov. 24, 2000, at his home.

He was born Nov. 3, 1932, in Kaiser, a son of Charles and Mattie Sinett Hawken.

A Navy veteran, he was a lineman for Union Electric for 35 years. He was a member of VFW Post 2992, Eldon, the Elks Lodge and Lions Club, Osage Beach.

Survivors include: one son, Gerald "Jerry" Hawken, Lake Ozark; three daughters, Sherry Covert, St. Peters, Terry Werremeyer, Lake Ozark, and Mary Graybeal, Las Vegas; two brothers, Fern Hawken, Eldon, and Robert Hawken, Tucson, Ariz.; one sister, Anna Marie Ransdell, Lake Ozark; and 12 grandchildren.

Services will be at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Hedges Funeral Home, Osage Beach. The Rev. Jim McGowin will officiate.

Visitation will be from 2-7 p.m. Wednesday.

Memorials are suggested to the Burl and Helen Henderson Scholarship Fund at School of the Osage.

CARROLL

James O. Carroll, 79,  Jefferson City, died Nov. 26, 2000, in  Jefferson City.

He was born Aug. 5, 1921, in Centaur, a son of William J. and Cora Alice Conner Carroll. He was married April 12, 1947, in Miller County, to Elizabeth Cox, who survives at the home.

An Army Air Corps veteran of World War II, he was a resident of Miller County for most of his life. He was employed as a corrections officer at the Missouri Department of Corrections until his retirement.

He was active at Blue Springs Baptist Church.

Other survivors include: one daughter, Martha Fenimore,  Jefferson City; one son, Jim Carroll, High Point; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Phillips Funeral Home, Eldon. John Shifflet will officiate. Burial will be in Greenmore Memorial Gardens, Barnett.

Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Tuesday.

Memorials are suggested to Blue Springs Baptist Church.

STEVENSON

Delbert Clayton Stevenson, 63, Versailles, died Nov. 26, 2000, at Capital Region Medical Center.

He was born June 29, 1937, in Versailles, a son of Herbert and Alma Irene Coonce Stevenson. He was married Nov. 3, 1972, to Mary Lou Chadwick Arnold, who survives at the home.

He retired in 1979 as a foreman with Carswell Manufacturing, Kansas City, Kan. He was employed at Fasco, Eldon. He was a member of the NRA.

Other survivors include: two sons, Cole Stevenson, Versailles, and Bobby Stevenson,  Jefferson City; three daughters, Laura Stevenson, Omaha, Ark., and Debbie Gosvenor and Kathy Murray, both of Grandby; one stepdaughter, Donita Thompson, Gravois Mills; one sister, Edith Mae Powell, Hawkpoint; and nine grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Kidwell-Garber Funeral Home, Versailles. Wilford Whittle and Gene Burnett will officiate. Burial will be in St. Pauls Cemetery, near Stover.

Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. today.

Memorials are suggested to the American Cancer Society or the Kidney Foundation.

SHOCKLEY

Cleo Allie Shockley, 91, Belleville, Ill., formerly of Iberia, died Nov. 26, 2000, at St. Paul's Home, Belleville.

She was born Jan. 15, 1909, in Brays, a daughter of Anville and Laura Atwell Humphrey. She was married March 5, 1932, in St. Louis, to Herman Austin Shockley, who died Dec. 12, 1990.

She was a homemaker and a member of Brays Advent Christian Church, near Iberia.

Survivors include: one son, Charles Shockley, Owens Crossing, Ala.; one daughter, Marilyn Ellis, Swansea, Ill.; one sister, Crethen Hinson, Kansas City; 10 grandchildren; and 14 great grandchildren.

One son, Lanny Shockley, died in 1993 and one great-grandson also preceded her in death.

Services will be at noon Thursday at Rekus Funeral Home, Iberia. The Rev. Earl Skidds will officiate. Burial will be in Union Cemetery, near Iberia.

Visitation will be from 10:30 a.m.-noon Thursday.
