MATTHEWS

Dr. John I. Matthews, 81,  Jefferson City, died Jan. 16, 2001, at his home.

He was born Nov. 8, 1919, in Detroit, a son of Myron J. and Edna Amelia Immel Matthews. He was married Jan. 22, 1945, in Detroit, to Delma Rita "Peggy" Ostenfeld, who survives at the home.

He was a 1937 graduate of Cooley High School, Detroit. He received a bachelor's degree from Wayne University in 1941, and a doctor of medicine degree from Wayne University School of Medicine in 1943. He completed his medical internship in 1944 at Wayne County (Michigan) Hospital.

He served in the Army Medical Corps in World War II. He continued his medical education in St. Louis, at Washington University Medical School,  Jefferson Barracks Hospital and Barnes Hospital. He was a fellow in gastroenterology at Barnes Hospital and Washington University.

He began private practice in  Jefferson City in 1951, specializing in cardiology and gastroenterology, and formed Internal Medicine Inc. He later joined with other physicians to form  Jefferson City Medical Group (JCMG). He retired in 1994, becoming a volunteer reading instructor with ABLE Learning Center.

He was a member and officer of many professional organizations including: the American Medical Association; the Missouri State Medical Association (MSMA); the Missouri Society of Internal Medicine; the American Society of Internal Medicine; the American College of Physicians; the American Heart Association; and the Cole County Medical Society. He was MSMA secretary from 1959 to 1980, serving as legislative committee chairman from 1966 to 1980, and as president from 1982 to 1983. He was councilor for the Missouri Society of Internal Medicine; past president of the Cole County Medical Society; and past president of the medical staffs at St. Marys and Memorial hospitals.

He was a volunteer instructor at the University of Missouri-Columbia Medical School, and a diplomat of the American Board of Internal Medicine. He was an associate member of the University of Missouri-Columbia Medical Alumni Organization. He served on the founding board of directors for Hospice of  Jefferson City and Mid-Missouri.

Other survivors include: two sons, John W. Matthews, Mission, Kan., and James M. Matthews, Lenexa, Kan.; one daughter, Joyce E. Weber,  Jefferson City; and three grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Houser-Millard Funeral Home. Private services will follow at Resurrection Mausoleum.

Memorials are suggested to Hospice of  Jefferson City and Mid-Missouri, ABLE Learning Center or to a charity of the donor's choice.

TOMLIN

Mildred A. Tomlin, 87,  Jefferson City, died Jan. 16, 2001, at St. Marys Health Center.

She was born Jan. 29, 1913, in Basco, Ill., a daughter of John L. and Jeanette Green Zimmerman. She was married June 29, 1936, in Canton, to Malcolm R. Tomlin, who died in 1990.

She was a graduate of Canton High School and Culver-Stockton College. She taught elementary school in Canton for one year and in  Jefferson City public schools for 29 years, retiring in 1978. She then worked as a private tutor.

She was a member of First United Methodist Church, where she was a past president and past secretary of the chapel Sunday school class. She was a member of United Methodist Women, the Ruth Circle and was a youth volunteer.

She was a member of the Missouri Retired Teachers Association and the  Jefferson City Community Concert Association, where she served on the board of directors and 10 years as membership chairman. She was a member of the  Jefferson City Symphony string section and served on the group's board of directors. She was a member of the Memorial Community Hospital Auxiliary and volunteered at the hospital. She volunteered at the Special Learing Center, where she was on the board and was chairman of the special services department. She belonged to Chi Omega Sorority and PEO, Chapter HM.

Survivors include: three sons, Michael L. Tomlin, Jackson, John M. Tomlin,  Jefferson City, and David Tomlin, Camdenton; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Freeman Mortuary. The Rev. L. Kyle Hern will officiate. Burial will be in Hawthorn Memorial Gardens.

Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m. Friday.

Memorials are suggested to the Special Learning Center or First United Methodist Church.

SCHNIEDERS

Andrew Michael "Andy" Schnieders, 61,  Jefferson City, died Jan. 15, 2001, at St. Marys Health Center.

He was born Nov. 30, 1939, in Taos, a son of George and Mary Talken Schnieders. He was married July 17, 1971, in Fulton, to Edith Ella Carrigan, who survives at the home.

He was employed by  Jefferson Asphalt Company and worked at the nuclear plant in Callaway County. He was a member of St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church, Taos.

He also is survived by one sister, Elsie Colvin,  Jefferson City.

Private family services are planned.

Memorials are suggested to the American Cancer Society.

Arrangements are under the direction of Buescher Memorial Home.

BERKSTRESSER

Betty Jewel Berkstresser, 57, Eldon, died Jan. 16, 2001, at St. Marys Health Center.

She was born Jan. 13, 1944, in Huntington Beach, Calif., a daughter of Ray and Gloria Cooper Campbell. Her parents survive in Eldon. She was married in 1959, in Eldon, to Donald L. "Dude" Carroll. She was married Feb. 6, 1976, in Eldon, to John R. Berkstresser, who died Jan. 31, 1986.

A lifelong resident of Eldon, she was a homemaker. She attended First Church of the Nazarene and worked as a broker for Century 21, both in Eldon.

She attended University of Missouri night classes.

Survivors include: one son, Monty R. Carroll, Pleasant Hill, California; one daughter, Holly Smock, Eldon; one brother, Fred Smock, Williamsburg, Kan.; one sister, Margaret Louise Rush, Eldon; and three grandchildren.

One son, Kenneth A. Carroll, died May 27, 1991.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Rekus Funeral Home, Eldon. The Rev. Jerry Frye will officiate. Burial will be in Eldon City Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. today.

COX

Hazel Elizabeth Cox, 91, Villa Ridge, formerly of Eldon, died Jan. 17, 2001, at St. John's Hospital, Washington .

She was born April 13, 1909, in Macon, a daughter of Stephen and Amellie Stachus Viers. She was married Aug. 9, 1931, in Neodesha, Kan., to Clarence Carl Boyer, who died in November 1935. She was married July 27, 1946, in Moberly, to Ercil D. Cox, who died April 29, 1986.

She was a homemaker and a member of Friendship Baptist Church near Macon.

Survivors include: one son, Clarence L. Boyer, Richland; one daughter, Nona Unk, Union; 10 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Friendship Baptist Church. Clancy Strait and Harold Strait will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Visitation will be from 10-11 a.m. Friday at the church.

Arrangements are under the direction of Rekus Funeral Home, Eldon.

CIOLLI

Grace M. Ciolli, 72, California, died Jan. 17, 2001, at her home.

She was born July 8, 1928, near Portsmouth, Iowa, a daughter of Theodore and Rose Ann Pitsch Pauley. She was married July 12, 1949, in Portsmouth, to Alberto Ciolli, who died Sept. 4, 1983.

She was a 1945 graduate of St. Mary's High School, Portsmouth. In 1978, she received a bachelor's degree in education, with a major in English literature and a minor in special education, from Lincoln University. She was a bus driver and aide at State School 3, and taught special education at Tipton High School, Tipton.

She was a columnist for the Portsmouth News and the California Democrat. She was a member of Annunciation Catholic Church, California, and the Altar and Rosary Sodality.

Survivors include: six sons, Theodore Ciolli, Jeffrey Ciolli, Anthony Ciolli and Timothy Ciolli, all of  Jefferson City, Stephen Ciolli, Northfield, N.J., and Jerome Ciolli, California; five daughters, Sandra Astl, Tampa, Fla., Joan Aquitato, Haines City, Fla., Yolanda Ciolli, Columbia, and Annette Grotjan and Alicia Ciolli, both of California; two brothers, Lloyd Pauley and Neil Pauley, both of Portsmouth; three sisters, Bonnie Stoltz, Audubon, Iowa, Janet Pauley, Chicago, and Diana Miller, Buffalo; 21 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Annunciation Catholic Church. Msgr. Francis Gillgannon will officiate. Burial will be in Annunciation Church Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5-7:30 p.m. Friday at Bowlin-Cantriel Funeral Home, California, with a prayer service at 7 p.m.

Memorials are suggested to the Altar and Rosary Sodality, in care of Annunciation Catholic Church, 414 Patrick St., California, Mo. 65018.

DeYOUNG

Darlene DeYoung, 80, Dixon, died Jan. 16, 2001, at her home.

She was born Aug. 27, 1920, in Marshalltown, Iowa, a daughter of Buren and Marie Schminkey Locke. She was married Nov. 30, 1954, in Fort Jackson, S.C., to Walter DeYoung, who survives at the home.

She was a homemaker and a beautician. An Army veteran of World War II, she was a member of DAV Unit 49, Crocker, and the Lighthouse Worship Center (formerly Family Church), Dixon.

She also is survived by one son, Rick DeYoung, Dallas.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Lighthouse Worship Center. Pastor Billy Reese will officiate. Burial will be in Dixon Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. today at Birmingham-Martin Funeral Home, Dixon, and from 1-2 p.m. Friday at the Lighthouse Worship Center.

Memorials are suggested to the American Cancer Society.

ROBERTSON

Zachary Michael Robertson, infant son of Sandra Robertson, Barnett, died shortly after birth Jan. 11, 2001, at Lake Regional Hospital, Osage Beach.

Other survivors include: one brother, Terry Robertson, of the home; one sister, Nichole Robertson, of the home; maternal grandmother, Mary Reed, Humansville; and maternal grandfather, John Robertson, Barnett.

Services will be at a later date at Antioch Cemetery, Crocker.

Arrangements are under the direction of Hedges Funeral Home, Camdenton.

SEILER

Services were Monday for LaVern Alexander Seiler, 86, El Paso, Texas , formerly of  Jefferson City, who died Jan. 10, 2001.

She was born Feb. 10, 1914, in Centertown, a daughter of Leonidas and Agnes Dorzab Alexander. She was married March 8, 1967, to Andrew J. Seiler, who preceded her in death.

A  Jefferson City High School graduate, she worked for the Missouri Highway Department. She moved to El Paso in 1943. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church.

She is survived by one stepdaughter, Betty Ann Seiler, Ruidoso, N.M.

Services were in First Presbyterian Church. The remains were donated to Texas Tech University Medical School.

Memorials are suggested to the El Paso Rescue Mission.

Arrangements were under the direction of El Paso Mortuary Services.
