GAVILSKY

Anthony Joseph "Tony" Gavilsky, 83,  Jefferson City, died Oct. 13, 2000, at Capital Regional Medical Center.

He was born Aug. 5, 1917, in Madison, Ill. He was married May 4, 1940, in St. Louis, to Bernice Szymcek, who survives at the home.

He owned and operated Valley Glass Co. from 1958 to 1993. He was an Army Air Forces veteran of World War II. He was a member of the Roman Catholic Church, Disabled American Veterans, VFW Post 1003 and American Legion Post 5.

He also is survived by one sister, Kati Saluicki, Granite City, Ill.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday in Granite City, Ill. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Edwardsville, Ill.

Visitation will be 5-7 p.m. Saturday at Dulle-Trimble Funeral Home, and 4-8 p.m. Sunday at Thomas Mortuary, Granite City, Ill.

Memorials are suggested to the American Heart Association.

KIRBY

Donal Kirby, 87,  Jefferson City, died Oct. 13, 2000, at Capital Region Medical Center.

Arrangements are incomplete at Houser-Millard Funeral Home.

MEDLOCK

Nora Opal Medlock, 79, Bland, died Oct. 11, 2000, in  Jefferson City.

She was born Jan. 11, 1921, in Blooming Rose, a daughter of James and Pearl Mobley Walker. She was married May 22, 1937, to William Lowell Medlock, who survives at the home.

She was a homemaker and a cook at the Bland school for 17 years.

Other survivors include: six sons, James Medlock,  Jefferson City, Larry Medlock, Cherryvale, Kan., Lonnie Medlock, Lee Medlock and Randy Medlock, all of Bland, and Ronnie Medlock, Belle; two daughters, Bonnie Koch, Clinton, and Connie Hacker,  Oklahoma City; two brothers, James Walker, Owensville, and Vernon Walker, state of Illinois; six sisters, Ruth DeLong and Ruby Hayes, both of Rolla, Iva Manes, state of Indiana, Orpha Mathis, Doolittle, Ada Mae Lewis, Rolla, and Nadine Jarvis, Owensville; 25 grandchildren; and 31 great-grandchildren.

Two sons, Junior Medlock and Robbie Medlock, preceded her in death.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at First Baptist Church, Bland. Pastor Bob Dobson will officiate. Burial will be in Bland Union Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. today at Sassman's Funeral Service, Bland.

NEWKIRK

Bessie Carmelia Newkirk, 100,  Jefferson City, died Oct. 12, 2000, at St. Joseph Home for the Aged.

She was born March 30, 1900, in Westboro, a daughter of John R. and Mary Alena McEnancy Roach. She was married in Buchanon County to Floyd Newkirk, who died June 4, 1954.

She attended Conception Abbey, Maryville. She was employed by the J.C. Penney Co. and co-operated a grocery store in Perrin. She was a clerk at the Missouri Department of Revenue until her retirement in 1975.

She was a member of St. Peter Catholic Church and a volunteer at Still Hospital.

Survivors include seven grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

Two daughters, Dee Jean Karl and Marjorie Coleen Hitt, preceded her in death.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Peter Catholic Church. The Rev. Joseph S. Corel will officiate. Burial will be in Resurrection Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. Sunday at Dulle-Trimble Funeral Home, with a prayer service at 7 p.m.

Memorials are suggested to St. Peter Catholic Church.

RATLIFF

Codey Darrell Ratliff, 9, Russellville, died Oct. 9, 2000, at Hospice House.

He was born June 24, 1991, in Trenton, a son of Stacey and Gayle Ratliff. His father and stepmother, Stacey and Donna Ratliff, survive in Columbia. His mother and stepfather, Gayle and Tony Templeton, survive in Russellville.

He was a student at the Kirchner State School.

Other survivors include: one half brother, Garrett Ratliff; one stepbrother, Steiger Dinsmore; maternal grandparents Larry Monroe, Linn, and Elaine Monroe, Bonnots Mill; paternal grandparents, Ron and Iva Gail Ratliff, Pattonsburg; maternal great-grandmother Alice Bracht, Chamois; and paternal great-grandparents Nina Bascom and Darrell and Delores Ratliff, all of Gilman City;.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Weber & Sons Funeral Home, Russellville. Pastor Ron Ratliff and Pastor Ron Smith will officiate. Burial will be in Mount Carmel Cemetery, Eugene.

Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Saturday.

Memorials are suggested to the Kirchner State School P.T.O., 1403 Riverside Dr.,  Jefferson City, Mo.

ROARK

Services were Sept. 15 for Clifford Menzo Roark, 73, New Haven, who died Sept. 13, 2000, at his home.

He was born July 9, 1927, in St. James, a son of Charles and Biddy Malissa Roark. He was married to Geraldine Berdollt, who preceded him in death. He was married to Bertha Marie Futhey, who survives at the home.

He was a Marine Corps veteran and played music professionally with Ernest Tubb. He worked at Atlas Gun Powder Co., Richmond, Calif., and the Missouri State Highway Department in St. Louis. He also was a self-employed heavy machine operator.

He was a member of Reedville Baptist Church, Sullivan, where he played music, and American Legion Post 0366, New Haven.

Other survivors include: five daughters, Kathlinee Ann Hake,  Jefferson City, Karen Lee Roark and Carla Sondra Masterson, both of Evansville, Ind.; Jill Joy Shelton, Green Forest, Ark., and Theresa Sue Roark, Union; eight stepchildren; one brother, Charles "Ted" Roark, Fredricktown; one sister, Rosella Smith, Sullivan; seven grandchildren; 21 step grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and four step great-grandchildren.

One grandson preceded him in death.

Services were at Pitman-Brown Funeral Home, Warrenton. Pastor Dane Kelley officiated. Burial, with military honors, was in Jonesburg City Cemetery, Jonesburg.

STEGEMAN

Rhonda M. Stegeman, 50,  Jefferson City, died Oct. 11, 2000, at her home.

She was born June 1, 1950, in California, a daughter of Elmer and Edna Mae Grafe. Her mother and stepfather, Edna Mae and Delmar Luadzers, survive in  Jefferson City. She was married June 29, 1968, in Taos, to John Stegeman, who survives at the home.

A 1968 graduate of Fatima High School, she worked for the State of Missouri Board of Nursing for the past four years. She previously worked for Target and  Jefferson City Medical Group. She was a member of St. Joseph Cathedral.

Other survivors include: three sons, Rory J. Stegeman and Kevin J. Stegeman, both of  Jefferson City, and Chad A. Stegeman, New York City; four sisters, Sherry Stratman,  Jefferson City, Dana Bernskoetter, Springfield, Joyce Schnur, Taos, and Leila Cavender, Linn; one stepbrother, Randy Luadzers, Taos; and one granddaughter.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Joseph Cathedral. The Rev. Fred Elskamp will officiate.

Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. today at Houser-Millard Funeral Home, with a prayer service at 7:30 p.m.

Memorials are suggested to the Arthritis Foundation, 8390 Delmar Blvd., St. Louis, Mo. 63124; or to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, Attn: Memorial/Honor Program FH, One St. Jude Place Bldg., P.O. Box 1000, Dept. 300, Memphis, Tenn. 38148.

WHALEY

C. Forrest "Red" Whaley, 91,  Jefferson City, died Oct. 13, 2000, at Oak Tree Villa Nursing Center.

He was born Aug. 19, 1909, in Callaway County, a son of Curtis E. and Mamie Tyler Whaley. He was married Jan. 31, 1943, in Brunswick, to Mary M. "Peggy" Mortimeyer, who died Dec. 30, 1988.

He was a lifelong resident of Central Missouri and a graduate of Fulton High School. After graduating from Westminster College, Fulton, in 1933, he moved to  Jefferson City where he worked at Tanner Drug Store until 1943 when he purchased East End Drug Store. He opened Whaley's Medical Center Pharmacy in 1974. He was a registered pharmacist for 66 years.

He was a member of First Presbyterian Church, where he served as an elder and deacon. He was a past president of the  Jefferson City Lions Club and 1955 president of the  Jefferson City Area Chamber of Commerce. He served on the committee to dedicate the new bridge.

He was mayor of  Jefferson City from 1959 to 1963. In 1963, he was chairman of the committee that passed the sewer bond issue. He was a member of the  Jefferson City Park Board and active on civic committees involved in passing school bond and industrial bond issues.

In 1990, the Missouri Highway and Transportation Department honored him for his community service and commitment to improve streets and highways by naming the portion of Highway 54 that runs through  Jefferson City the C.F. "Red" Whaley Expressway.

He was a member of the original board of directors at  Jefferson Bank. He was honored by the  Jefferson City Rotary Club as the first non-Rotarian Paul Harris Fellow. He received the William Quigg Distinguished Service Award from the  Jefferson City Chamber of Commerce for his many contributions toward the betterment of  Jefferson City.

Survivors include: one daughter, Karen Whaley Connell,  Jefferson City; two sisters, Fern Parks, Olathe, Kan., and Harriett Evans, Sarasota, Fla.; three grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

One son, James E. Whaley, died June 7, 1998.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at First Presbyterian Church. The Rev. R.W. Beard will officiate. Burial will be in Riverview Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4-6 p.m. Saturday at Freeman Mortuary, and from 1-2 p.m. Sunday at the church.

Memorials are suggested to First Presbyterian Church.

DESCHER

Walter Descher, 79,  Jefferson City, died Nov. 7, 2000, at St. Marys Health Center.

Arrangements are incomplete at Dulle-Trimble Funeral Home.

FLEENER

Jay W. Fleener, 81, Independence, formerly of Gravois Mills, died Nov. 7, 2000, at the Medical Center of Independence.

He was born May 19, 1919, in Merwin, a son of Jay W. and Rachel J. Lane Fleener. He was married June 9, 1944, in Kansas City, Kan., to Nina L. Duzan, who died Sept. 23, 1993.

He was a graduate of Blue Springs High School and Kansas City College of Commerce. He attended the University of Missouri before earning his pilot's license.

He was an Army Air Corps veteran. He was a flight instructor and an advanced trainer. He worked at Lake City Arsenol as a tool and gage inspector.

He operated the Twin Bays Resort for 22 years. He worked at Station Casino. He was a Reserve Deputy and a dispatcher for the Morgan County Sheriff's Department.

He founded the Gravois Mills Fire Protection District. He was chosen Citizen of the Year by the First Responders. He was a past president of the Gravois Arm Association; a member of the Masonic Lodge, Blue Springs and Versailles; the Ararat Shrine Temple, Kansas City; the American Legion, Blue Springs and Versailles; and Gravois Mills United Methodist Church.

Survivors include: one son, Jay W. "Scotty" Fleener III, Lee's Summit; one daughter, Jacquelyn "Jackie" E. Shafer, Sunrise Beach; four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Kidwell-Garber Funeral Home, Laurie. The Rev. Sidney Robbins will officiate. Burial with military honors will be in Ozark Chapel Cemetery, Laurie.

Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. today.

Memorials are suggested to Gravois Mills United Methodist Church.

JEFFERY

Bruce "Bert" Jeffery, 90,  Jefferson City, died Nov. 7, 2000, at his home.

He was born July 30, 1910, in Mokane, a son of John R. and Millie A. Humphry Jeffery. He was married in 1943, in Griffin, Ga., to Kathryn Sheppard, who survives at the home.

A lifelong resident of the  Jefferson City area, he attended school in Mokane and  Jefferson City. He was an Army veteran of World War II, receiving four Bronze Stars.

He was employed as a conductor with the Missouri Pacific Railroad for 30 years until his retirement in 1975. He was a member of the United Transportation Union, Local 933, and a past member of the VFW, Roy Sone Post 1003.

Other survivors include one son, Donald B. Jeffery, Hartsburg, four grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

One son, Bruce Jeffery, died April 6, 1962.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Freeman Mortuary. The Rev. George Scantlan will officiate. Burial, with military honors, will be in Hawthorn Memorial Gardens.

Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. today.

Memorials are suggested to the Missouri River Hospice.
