WADKINS

Eldred E. "Gene" Wadkins, 77, Kaiser, died March 2, 2001, at Lake Regional Health Center.

He was born Nov. 9, 1923, in Phillips, Neb., a son of A.H. "Lon" and Myrtle Purdy Wadkins. He was married June 5, 1949, in Laurel, Neb., to Lilly Kastrup, who survives in Kaiser.

He was an Army veteran of World War II. He was a member of the Linn Creek Baptist Church, the American Legion Post 229 and the V.F.W. Post 6514 where he was a quarter master for 18 years.

He owned and operated the Pleasant Point Resort, Osage Beach, and the Kaiser Kountry Store.

Other survivors include: two sons, Lon Wadkins, Jesup, Iowa, and Dennis Wadkins, Kaiser; one daughter, Barbara Leinbach, Kaiser; one brother, Keith Wadkins, Diamond Springs, Calif.; four sisters, Betty Goecke, Omaha, Neb., Elaine Soukup, Milford, Neb., Donna Winscott, Imperial, Neb., and Beverley McElravy, Visalia, Calif.; seven grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Linn Creek Baptist Church. The Rev. Rick Ginnings will officiate. Graveside services with military honors will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday in Springfield Missouri Veterans Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4-6 p.m. Sunday at Hedges Funeral Home, Osage Beach.

Memorials are suggested to the Linn Creek Baptist Church Building Fund or the Blue Moon Sanctuary Linn Creek, Mo.

WELCH

Meccie J. Welch, 91, Columbia, died March 2, 2001, at her home.

She was born Nov. 21, 1909, in Pikeville, Ky., a daughter of Frank and Mattie Blackburn Johnson. She was married July 14, 1935, in Mossy Bottom, Ky., to Elbridge D. Welch, who died Dec. 28, 1989.

Survivors include: two sons , E.D. Welch, Ashland, and Larry Welch, Columbia; seven grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Robinson Funeral Home, Ashland. The Rev. Rod Casey will officiate. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, Columbia.

Visitation will be from noon-1 p.m. Monday.

BILLINGS

Christina Marie Billings, 83,  Jefferson City, died March 1, 2001, at St. Joseph's Home for the Aged.

She was born Nov. 7, 1917, in Fredonia, Kansas, a daughter of David and Phoebe Hobart Clary. She was married Oct. 30, 1937, in Fredonia to Clarence E. Billings, who survives at the home.

She graduated from Anderson High School in McDonald County in 1935. She attended Southwest Baptist, Central Missouri State, Southwest Missouri State and Drury Colleges where she received a master's degree in education. She went on to attend the University of Missouri and Lincoln University where she received a librarian degree. After 32 years of teaching in Anderson, Springfield and  Jefferson City public schools, she retired in 1981. She received the outstanding teacher's recognition award from the Missouri House of Representatives. She served on the board of directors at the First United Methodist Church and was a member of Naomi Circle, the Harmony Sunday School Class, the State Teachers Association, Cole County Teachers Association and the Alpha Delta Kappa Sorority.

Other survivors include: one son, Dr. Clarence David Billings of Huntsville, Ala.; one daughter, Jeanne Marie Billings Roberts of Springfield; one brother, Richard Clary of Tucson, Ariz.; one sister, Laura Faye Immekus of Joplin; and five grandchildren.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at the First United Methodist Church with the Rev. L. Kyle Hern and the Rev. Dorothy Lairmore officiating.

Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. Sunday at the Houser-Millard Funeral Home --  Jefferson City Chapel.

Memorials are suggested to First United Methodist Church.

FISCHER

Ofa Fischer, 89,  Jefferson City, died March 2, 2001, at Ashland Healthcare Center, Ashland.

She was born Dec. 11, 1911, in Miller County, a daughter of Sidney and Myrtle Snellen Cardwell. She was married Dec. 14, 1929, in Fulton, to Louis Frederick Fischer Sr., who died Nov. 25, 1985.

A homemaker, she attended schools in Cole County. She was a member of the Central United Church of Christ and the Martha Circle of the church.

Survivors include: one son, Louis Frederick Fischer Jr., Hartsburg; one daughter, Barbara Carel,  Jefferson City; one brother, Earl Cardwell, Hartsburg; two sisters, Sidney Johnsey, Eldon, and Wilma Hazelbaker, Des Moines, Iowa; 13 grandchildren, 32 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

One daughter, Dorothy Luebbert, died Nov. 28, 1997.

Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Monday at Central United Church of Christ. The Rev. Stephen H. Buchholz will officiate. Burial will be in Riverview Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. today at Buescher Memorial Home.

Memorials are suggested to the Central United Church of Christ.

GREFRATH

Hermanda H. Grefrath, 83, Holts Summit, died March 1, 2001, at St. Marys Health Center.

She was born July 22, 1917, in  Jefferson City, a daughter of Ben and Sophia Stegeman Taube. She was married on May 17,1938, to Elmer S. Ortmeyer who died in 1959. She was remarried Feb. 24, 1962, in Loose Creek, to Bernard G. Grafrath, who died in 1996.

She attended Immaculate Conception Catholic School. She was a charter member and co-founder of the Ladies of St. Ann Sodality at the St. Andrew's Catholic Church. She served several terms on the Parish Council and was a Cursillo member. She chaired the social concerns committee and the committee to visit the sick and shut-ins and was a communion minister. She co-founded "Quarter Sunday" for the poor and initiated family dinners for funerals. She was on the original planning committee for the new church and cemetery and did the accounting for the church's Sunday collections. She was instrumental is obtaining memorial plaques for all deceased members. She was on the committee for planning fall festivals and fundraisers. She was on the board of directors for Greenway Villiage.

Survivors include: one daughter, Dianne Ocheskey of Crystal Lake, Ill.; two sons, Bob Ortmeyer of  Jefferson City and James L. Ortmeyer of Lohman; one sister, Rosanna Wolters of  Jefferson City; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at the St. Andrew's Catholic Church with the Rev. Pat Pierceall, Rev. Fred Elskamp and Rev. Greg Higley officiating. Interment will follow in the St. Andrew's Catholic Church Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Sunday at the Houser-Millard Funeral Home -- Holts Summit Chapel, with a prayer service at 7:30 p.m.

Memorials are suggested to the St. Andrew's Catholic Church building fund.

PIRNER

Frances Regina Pirner, 95,  Jefferson City, died March 2, 2001, at Capital Healthcare Center.

She was born Jan. 24, 1906, in Loose Creek, a daughter of Gerhard and Theresa Sandbothe Jaegers. She was married Feb. 22, 1946, in  Jefferson City, to Thomas Oliver Pirner, who died Sept. 16, 1989.

She attended Loose Creek Parochial School. She was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, the Ladies Sodality and St. Ann's Sodality.

She was a homemaker and was employed as a housekeeper.

Survivors include one sister, Sabina Klithermes, St. Ann.

Services will be 10 a.m. Monday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. The Rev. Greg Highley will officiate. Burial will be in Hawthorn Memorial Gardens.

Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. Sunday at Buescher Memorial Home with a prayer service at 6:30 p.m.

Memorials are suggested to the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church.

BERENDZEN

Martha A. Berendzen, 83, Eugene, died March 3, 2001, in  Jefferson City.

She was born July 16, 1917, in Mary's Home, a daughter of Herman H. and Sophia E. Evers Hake. She was married Oct. 30, 1940, in Mary's Home, to Edwin A. Berendzen, who died Jan. 31, 1988.

She was a member of Our Lady of the Snows Catholic Church, Mary's Home, the Altar Sodality, Legion of Mary, Senior Citizen Group, Parish Quilting Group, and a past member of the Fox Hunters Association.

Survivors include: two daughters, Rose Mary Rehagen, Russellville, and Helen Bax, St. Elizabeth; one son, Ralph Berendzen, Columbia; 16 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Our Lady of the Snow Catholic Church, Mary's Home. The Rev. Clarence Wiederholt will officiate. Burial will be in Our Lady of the Snows Cemetery, Mary's Home.

Visitation will be from 1:30-8 p.m. Monday at Phillips Funeral Home, Mary's Home, with rosaries at 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.

Memorials are suggested to Our Lady of the Snows Catholic Church.

BENEDICT

Margaret Ann Benedict, 75, Camdenton, died March 2, 2001, at Osage Bend Manor Nursing Home.

She was born Nov. 17, 1925, in  Jefferson City, the daughter of Charles Anton Hadwick and Margaret Emily "Emma" Poetker Hadwick. She was married Jan. 8, 1949, in  Jefferson City to Harold Henry Benedict, who died Oct. 23, 2000.

She was a 1943 graduate of St. Peter High School. She was employed for 14 years with the Missouri Department of Health. She served for 10 years with the United States Postal Service in Hannibal, and as Postmistress in Taylor for 10 years until her retirement in 1985.

She was a member of St. Anthony Catholic Church in Camdenton.

Survivors include: two daughters, Shirley Fitzpatrick, Wichita, and Patricia "Pat" Humke, Quincy; one son, Harold "Hal" Benedict II, Hannibal; seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by an infant son, John Benedict, and one grandson.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Joseph Cathedral with the Rev. Frederick J. Elskamp officiating.

Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Monday at Dulle-Trimble Funeral Home, with a prayer service at 7:30 p.m.

Memorials are suggested to Helias Foundation or the Leukemia Foundation.

BREWER

Barbara L. Brewer, 72, Gravois Mills, died March 3, 2001, at Golden Age Living Center, Stover.

She was born Dec. 15, 1928, in St. Joseph, a daughter of Kenneth E. and Mary Lucille Roberts Frizell. She was married June 1, 1950, to H. Ross Brewer, who survives at the home.

She was a retired examiner for the Internal Revenue Service, Kansas City. She was a member of the Emerson Park Christian Church, Kansas City, Kan. She was active in the Farm Extension, P.T.A., Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts.

Other survivors include: two sons, Michael R. Brewer, Overland Park, Kan., and Jeffery S. Brewer, Kearney; one daughter, Linda Coe, Shawnee, Kan.; two sisters, Janice Capoot, Sunrise Beach, and Marion Montesano, Gravois Mills; and eight grandchildren.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Kidwell-Garber Funeral Home, Laurie. The Rev. James Lawley will officiate. The remains will be cremated. Entombment will be in Garber Memorial Estates Columbarium, Laurie.

Visitation will be from 1-2 p.m. Tuesday.

Memorials are suggested to the Golden Age Living Center Alzheimer's Unit, P.O. Box 307, Stover, Mo. 65078.
