VanWINKLE
George E. VanWinkle, 73, Gravois Mills, died April 18, 2001, in Warrensburg.
He was born March 3, 1928, in Calhoun, a son of R.E. and Rosa Larison VanWinkle. He was married Feb. 14, 1991, in Kansas City, to Laura M. Wanger Morrison, who survives at the home.
An Army veteran of the Korean War, he worked for more than 35 years as a dock foreman with Sears and Roebuck Company, Kansas City, retiring in 1987. He was a member of First Assembly of God Church, Versailles.
Other survivors include: one stepson, Larry Dale Morrison, Kansas City; one stepdaughter, Debra Sue Morrison, Kansas City; two sisters, Nellie Caldwell, Sonoma, Calif., and Roberta Vaughn, Kansas City; and two step grandchildren.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at First Assembly of God Church. The Rev. Roy Bennett will officiate. Burial will be in Dooley Cemetery, Eldon.
Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. today at Phillips Funeral Home, Eldon.
PATTERSON
Leona Patterson, 88, Vienna, died April 19, 2001, at Maries Manor Health Care Center, Vienna.
She was born June 4, 1912, in Phoenix, a daughter of William and Ellen McCarter Tucker. She was married March 10, 1930, in Topeka, Kan., to John William Patterson, who died Dec. 18, 1996.
A homemaker, she was a member of the Church of Christ, Vienna, and the Vienna Senior Citizens Center.
Survivors include: one son, Harold Patterson, Vienna; three grandchildren, one great-grandson and three step great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Birmingham-Martin Funeral Home. Bro. Duncan Skiles will officiate. Burial will be in Vienna Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. today and from noon-2 p.m. Sunday.
Memorials are suggested to the American Heart Association or the Vienna Church of Christ.
POULSON
Ruby Poulson, 91, Crocker, died April 19, 2001, at Sunset Village of the Ozarks, St. Robert.
She was born April 19, 1910, at Crocker, a daughter of James and Belle Cusick. She was married to Jesse Blue, who died in 1941. She was married to Guy Poulson, who died in 1989.
She was a member of the Hilltop Church, Crocker. She had been employed at the Post Laundry for 30 years, retiring in 1972, as well as being a housewife and homemaker.
Survivors include one step-son, Kent Poulson, Licking; and one sister, Mildred Crews, Crocker.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday in Long Funeral Home, Crocker. The Bro. Billy Claiborne will officiate. Burial will follow in Antioch Cemetery, Crocker.
Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. Sunday and from 1-2 p.m. Monday.
ALEXANDER
Charles O. "Ax" Alexander, 85, Jefferson City, died April 20, 2001, at Capital Region Medical Center.
He was born May 25, 1915, in Cairo, a son of Rollo and Emma Florence Terrill Alexander. He was married May 2, 1939, in Jefferson City, to Virginia F. "Veedy" Darr, who survives at the home.
He graduated from Cairo High School, Cairo. He was employed with the Missouri State Highway Patrol from 1937 until retirement in 1976 as the district radio engineer. He was one of the original radio operators employed by the Missouri Highway Patrol.
During World War II, he was employed as a flight radio engineer with Pam American Airlines. He was an amateur radio operator and a member of the Ham Radio Club.
He was a member of the First Christian Church, the American Association of Retired Persons, the Retired Missouri State Employees Association and the Quarter Century Club of the Missouri State Highway Patrol.
Other survivors include: two sons, Alan Timothy Alexander and Charles Jonathan Alexander, both of Jefferson City; one half sister, Felicia Bart, Parksville; and one grandson.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Freeman Mortuary. The Rev. Lawrence Veatch will officiate. Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Grand Prairie Cemetery, Cairo.
Visitation will be from 9-10 a.m. Wednesday.
Memorials are suggested to the Parkinson Foundation or the Missouri Association of State Troopers Emergency Relief Society.
BRETTSCHNEIDER
Edna Emma Brettschneider, 93, Jefferson City, died April 21, 2001, at St. Joseph Home for the Aged.
She was born Sept. 16, 1907, at Silver Lake, a daughter of Michael and Elizabeth Duvall Maddock. She was married Jan. 13, 1931, in St. Louis, to Leo Brettschneider, who died March 7, 1986.
She was a homemaker and a member of St. Peter Catholic Church. She attended schools in Perryville and St. Louis.
Survivors include: one daughter, Nancy Rackers, Jefferson City; one son, Michael Brettschneider, Jefferson City; seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Two grandchildren preceded her in death.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday in the chapel at St. Joseph Home for the Aged, with the Rev. Brendan Doyle officiating. Burial will be in Resurrection Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday at Houser-Millard Funeral Directors. A prayer service will be held at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.
Memorials are suggested to the Helias Foundation.
CLAAS
Margaret Marie Claas, 86, Tipton, died April 21, 2001, at Villa Marie Skilled Nursing Facility.
She was born May 9, 1914, in Tipton, a daughter of Louis "Doc" and Sophia Schmitt Imhoff. She was married April 6, 1937, in Pilot Grove, to Richard J. Claas, who died in 1983.
She lived most of her life in the Tipton. She was a member of St. Andrew's Catholic Church, St. Andrew's Altar Society and Knights of Columbus Auxiliary.
She worked as a seamstress at Tipton Pants Factory for more than 30 years before retiring and later worked as a cook at St. Andrew's School. She volunteered for the Red Cross blood bank in Tipton and helped deliver Meals on Wheels.
Survivors include: one son, Donald Claas, St. Charles; one daughter, Ruth Knipp, Tipton; two brothers, John Imhoff, Blackwater, and Louis Imhoff Jr., Issaquah, Wash.; four sisters, Bertha Gerling, Blackwater, Anna Mae Bentlage, Jefferson City, Mary Helen Schuster, Nevada, and Clara "Tooter" Knipp, Tipton; five grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Andrew's Catholic Church, Tipton. The Rev. Henry Reichert will officiate. Burial will be in St. Andrew's Cemetery, Tipton.
Visitation will begin at 3 p.m. Monday at Meisenheimer-Griswold Funeral Home, Tipton, with an Altar Society prayer service at 3 p.m. and a prayer service at 7:30 p.m.
Memorials are suggested to St. Andrew's Church or Cemetery or the American Cancer Society.
COLEMAN
N. Nadine "Deanie" Coleman, 78, Jefferson City, died April 20, 2001, at Capital Region Medical Center.
She was born Feb. 11, 1923, in Steedman, a daughter of A.T. and Stella Quick Becker. She was married July 28, 1940, in Fulton, to Maurice Coleman, who preceded her in death.
She attended Jefferson City High School. She was a cashier for Gerbes Foods and also worked for Becker's Market. She was a member of Faith Lutheran Church and the Mary Martha Circle.
Survivors include: one son, Mark S. Coleman, Jefferson City; one daughter, Connie Lee Henley, Jefferson City; one sister, Mildred M. Goff, Jefferson City; two grandchildren and one great-grandson.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at the Hawthorn Memorial Gardens Mausoleum Chapel. The Rev. Alvin H. Lange will officiate.
Visitation will be from 10-11 a.m. Monday at the chapel.
Memorials are suggested to the Heisinger Lutheran Home.
Arrangements are under the direction of Houser-Millard Funeral Directors.
GARRETT
George Oran Garrett, 93, Fulton, died April 20, 2001, at Callaway Community Hospital, Fulton.
He was born March 19, 1908, in Reform, a son of L.E. and Mary Thomas Garrett. He was married March 14, 1929, in Belleville, Ill., to Ruby Shiverdecker, who died June 7, 1998.
He owned and operated his own farm. He was a member of the Church of God of Holiness.
Survivors include four children, Harley Garrett, Pauline Kroell and Christine Houchins, all of Fulton, and Travis Garrett, Blue Springs; one sister, Jewell Holland, Fulton; 13 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren, and six great-great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at the Maupin Funeral Home, Fulton. The Rev. Gary Garrett and Pastor Philip Utquiola will officiate. Entombment will be in Callaway Memorial Gardens Mausoleum, Fulton.
Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. today at the Maupin Funeral Home, Fulton.
