KEMPKER

Alfred "Al" Kempker, 79,  Jefferson City, died April 22, 2001, in  Jefferson City.

He was born Nov. 1, 1921, in Marys Home, a son of William and Margarete Sanning Kempker. He was married Feb. 23, 1942, in Tuscumbia, to Bonita C. Barbee, who survives at Mt. Pleasant.

He was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Eldon, and a member of the Eldon V.F.W. Post 2442. He also was a 50-year member of the International Union of Bricklayers and Allied Craftsman of  Jefferson City. An Army veteran of World War II, he earned five Bronze Stars.

Other survivors include: two daughters, Jean Berry, Rocky Mount, and Sharon Mace, Eldon; four sons, Eddie Kempker, El Dorado Springs, Mike Kempker, Bowling Green, and David and Rod Kempker, both of Eldon; one brother, Clarence Kempker, Marys Home; 20 grandchildren, 26-great-grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one son, Alfred "Butch" Kempker.

Services are 10 a.m. Wednesday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. The Rev. Richard Cronin will officiate. Burial will be in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery, Eldon, with military honors by V.F.W. Post 2442.

Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. today at Phillips Funeral Home, Eldon.

Memorials are suggested to Sacred Heart Catholic Church.

DOWNING

Anthony "Tony" Cole Downing, 56, Vienna, died April 15, 2001, near Vienna, from injuries sustained in an automobile accident.

He was born May 27, 1944, in Santa Barbara, Calif., a son of Arthur L. and Dorothy Steve Hogue Downing.

He retired from the armed forces after serving in the Army for four years and the Navy for 20 years. He was entitled to wear the Fourth Good Conduct Award for the period ending March 11, 1981, the Sea Service Deployment Ribbon, Meritorious Unit Commendation, Battle Efficiency "E" Award and the Navy Expeditionary Medal.

Owner and operator of A-1 Pest Control, Vienna, he was a founding member of Vienna-Bassett Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie 4340 and was active in Boys Town of Missouri, St. James.

Survivors include: one son, A. Christopher Downing, Portland, Ore.; his stepfather, Len Lande, Portland; two sisters, Arlene Yaconelli, Bocas del Toro, Panama, and Michelle Baltes, Springfield; and two grandsons.

Services with military honors will be at 7 p.m. Thursday at Vienna United Methodist Church. The Rev. Karen Alden will officiate.

Visitation will be from 6-7 p.m. Thursday at the church.

Arrangements are under the direction of Birmingham-Martin Funeral Home, Vienna.

BROWN

Constance Elaine Brown, 53, Russellville, died April 22, 2001, at Capitol Region Medical Center.

She was born Oct. 23, 1947, in Muscatine, Iowa, a daughter of Charles P. and Lola Marie Ruble Haislet. She was married Aug. 10, 1991, in Fairfield, Iowa, to Charles William Brown, who survives in Ottumwa, Iowa.

She was employed as a nurse's aid and medical technologist at Louisa County Home, Wapello, Iowa. She studied with the Jehovah's Witnesses.

Other survivors include: two daughters, Jan-Marie Shields and Deborha L. Calhoon, both of Russellville; four grandchildren; and two stepsons, Olen Brown and Loren Brown, both of Ottumwa, Iowa.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Longview Cemetery.

Memorials are suggested to the Connie Brown Memorial Fund.

Arrangements are under the direction of Dulle-Trimble Funeral Home.

GUMZ

Lorna Frieda Gumz, 76, Lake Ozark, died April 24, 2001, at Lake Regional Hospital, Osage Beach.

She was born June 12, 1924, in Amherst, Colo., a daughter of the Rev. Otto and Frieda Aufdemberge Hoyer. She was married April 9, 1944, to the Rev. Frederick August Gumz, who died Aug. 27, 1982.

She studied voice at the University of Toronto Conservatory and held positions of church organist and choir director in Missouri, Nebraska, Arkansas, Ontario and Iowa.

Prior to her retirement in the Lake area, she worked at the Wartburg College, Waverly, Iowa, where she was secretary to the director of Christian Schools for the American Lutheran Church.

She was a charter member of Christ the King Lutheran Church, Lake Ozark.

Survivors include: one son, Frederick M. Gumz, Orangevale, Calif.; one daughter Kathryn Epley, Cedar Rapids, Iowa; two brothers, the Rev. Victor Hoyer, Grimes, Iowa, and the Rev. Martin Hoyer, Barnett; four sisters, Clara Weller, Midland, Minn., Polly Simpson, St. Charles, Hilda Meyer, St. James, and Nelda Carney, Rolla; three grandchildren; and one great-grandson.

One daughter, Monica Lee Gumz, preceded her in death.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Christ the King Lutheran Church. Pastor Ron Lehenbauer will officiate. Inurnment will be at a later date in Harlington Cemetery, Waverly.

Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. Sunday at Hedges Funeral Home, Osage Beach.

Memorials are suggested to Christ the King Lutheran Church.

KELSAY

Dortha Kelsay, 75, Iberia, died April 22, 2001, at Capital Region Medical Center.

She was born Oct. 18, 1925, in Rogers, Ark., a daughter of Jerry and Gertrude Heggenbthal David. She was married in 1950 to Samuel Levi Kelsay, who survives at the home.

A homemaker, she was a member of Hickory Point Baptist Church near Iberia.

Other survivors include: three brothers, Jerry David, Edgar David and Calvin David, all of Arkansas; four sisters, Julia Hines, Arkansas, Bonnie Mayfield, state of California, Louise Fine, Idaho, and Eva Birchfield, South Dakota.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Rekus Funeral Home, Iberia. The Rev. Ken Gray will officiate. Burial will be in Hickory Point Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. today.

KUEBLER

Leroy "Kibe" Kuebler, 75, Hermann, died April 22, 2001, at St. Marys Health Center.

He was born Jan. 12, 1926, in Hermann, a son of Joe and Clara Eggenberg Kuebler. He was married Nov. 18, 1947, in Hermann, to Florence Koenig, who survives.

He worked at International Shoe Company in Hermann, then served in the Navy during World War II. He sold and repaired shoes, retiring in 1987. He was a member of St. George Church and VFW Post 4182, both in Hermann.

Other survivors include: two daughters, Dianne Talley, New Florence, and Kathy Walters, Centertown; one sister, Frieda Schuetz, Hermann; one brother, Wilbert Kuebler, Flat Rock, N.C.; one sister, Rose Mary Chandler, Kansas City; five grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. George Church. Fr. Ambrose German will officiate. Burial will be in St. George Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. today at Toedtmann & Grosse Funeral Home, Hermann, with a VFW service at 6:45 p.m. and a wake service at 7 p.m.

Memorials are suggested to St. George School, the American Heart Association, or to Masses.

McCORMICK

Betha Sue McCormick, 47,  Jefferson City, died April 23, 2001, at St. Marys Health Center.

She was born Dec. 26, 1953, in Mt. Ayr, Iowa, a daughter of Rexie G. and Vima Jean Day Davis.

She was a graduate of Mt. Ayr High School. She worked as a certified nursing assistant at Lincoln Nursing Home and later at Maple Wood Residential Center. She was a member of United Methodist Church in Redding, Iowa.

She is survived by one daughter, Karen Jean McCormick,  Jefferson City.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Dulle-Trimble Funeral Home. Chaplain Jim Carter and the Rev. Rick Conley will officiate. Burial will be in Redding Cemetery.

Memorials are suggested to the Betha McCormick Memorial Fund.

STROMBOM

George Strombom, 81, Lake Ozark, died April 24, 2001, at his home.

Local arrangements are under the direction of Hedges Funeral Home, Camdenton.

BELLAMY

John Truman Bellamy, 85, Calwood, died April 24, 2001, at Columbia Regional Hospital.

He was born Sept. 18, 1915, in Calwood, a son of John E. and Della Clara Day Bellamy. He was married Jan. 13, 1942, to Geraldine Smith, who survives.

An Army veteran of World War II, he was a farmer and had been a logger. He was a member of VFW Post 2657 and the Eagles.

Other survivors include: three daughters, Virgie Ann Bellamy-Day and Ruth Bellamy, both of Fulton, and Patricia Bellamy, Holliday, Fla.; three sisters, Melba Crane, state of Kansas, and Jo Nevins and Pearl Gowins, both of Fulton; one brother, Buster Bellamy, Fulton; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

One son, John T. Bellamy, and two grandchildren preceded him in death.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Debo Funeral Home, Fulton. Dave Coleman will officiate. Burial with military honors will be in Mount Carmel Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. Thursday.
