BERTELS

Christine W. Bertels, 72,  Jefferson City, died June 25, 2001, at her home.

She was born Aug. 31, 1928, in Martinsburg, a daughter of August and Mary May Jorboe Bertels.

She was a member of Risen Christ Parish, Denver, where she lived for 30 years before moving to  Jefferson City. She worked as a school administrator at St. Pius X, Denver. She also was a teacher and principal in the St. Louis Diocese.

Survivors include: one brother, Richard Bertels Sr., Mission, Texas .

Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at St. Brenden Catholic Church, Mexico. The Rev. Don Lammers will officiate. Burial will be in the St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery, Martinsburg.

Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. Friday at Arnold Funeral Home, Mexico, with a prayer service at 7:30 p.m.

Memorials are suggested to Mid-Missouri Hospice.

BROOME

Vernola McCullough Broome, 88, Fulton, died June 24, 2001, at Audrain Medical Center, Mexico.

She was born Aug. 27, 1912, in Boston, a daughter of Warren and Viola Milton McCullough. She was married May 27, 1950, in Lawton, Okla., to Charles Broome, who died in 1969.

She graduated in 1933 from the New England Deasoness Hospital, Boston. She served in the Army Nurse Corps for more than 11 years, resigning in 1952 as a major. She was a school nurse for 10 years in Cabool and was an instructor at a school for practical nursing in Fredericktown for two years. She was a director of inservice education and nursing home consultant for 15 years at Fulton State Hospital.

She received a bachelor's of art degree from Stephen's College, Columbia, in 1971. She was a member of the First Baptist Church, Fulton, Women's Missionary Union, GFWC Women's Club of Fulton, VFW auxiliary, and was a volunteer for Hospice.

Survivors include one son, Charles W. Broome, Gates Mills, Ohio, and two grandsons.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Debo Funeral Home, Fulton. The Rev. Stephen Sowder will officiate. Burial with military honors will be in Callaway Memorial Gardens.

Visitation will be 10-11 a.m. Thursday.

Memorials are suggested to Kingdom Hospice, 2 St. Louis Ave., Fulton, Mo.

CRUM

Darlene Crum, 62, Eldon, died June 26, 2001, in Eldon.

She was born Aug. 14, 1938, in Paola, Kan., a daughter of Sterling J. and Bessie Darlene Ryan Peele. She was married Aug. 25, 1957, in Carrollton, to Albert Crum, who survives at the home.

She attended Central Missouri State University for one year and was a member of Beta Sigma Phi and the United Methodist Church of Eldon.

A homemaker, she owned and operated Flora Belle Flower Shop, Eldon. She moved to Eldon from Springfield in 1996.

Other survivors include: one son, Jeff Crum, Nixa; one daughter, Cindy Paulik, Eldon; three brothers, Raymond Peel, Carrollton, Eugene Peel, Shawnee, Kan., and Cecil Peel, Lafollette, Tenn.; one sister, Norma Bales, Houstonia; and one grandson.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Phillips Funeral Home, Eldon. The Rev. Fred Smith will officiate. Burial will be in Eldon City Cemetery.

Visitation will be form noon-1 p.m. Friday.

Memorials are suggested to Kids Against Violence in Schools or Missouri River Hospice.

SCOTT

Alma Elizabeth Scott, 89, Wardsville, died June 27, 2001, at her home.

She was born Dec. 24, 1911, in Cole County, a daughter of John A. and Ida E. Hager Stockman. She was married Nov. 7, 1934, in  Jefferson City, to Vester Monroe Scott Sr., who died Jan. 19, 1977.

She was a member of St. Stanislaus Catholic Church, Wardsville; Ladies Sodality; Quilting Club and Prayer Line.

A homemaker, she worked as a cook at St. Stanislaus Catholic School for several years. She also worked at Chesebrough-Ponds, retiring in 1976.

Survivors include: five sons, Vester M. Scott Jr., Lawrenceville, Ga., James R. Scott, Washington , Lawrence E. Scott, Copperas Cove, Texas , Terrance J. Scott, House Springs, and Kevin A. Scott, Antioch, Cal.; two daughters, Jerene M. Sitter, Wardsville, and Judith A. Glover,  Jefferson City; two sisters Edna Prenger and Frances Huhman, both of  Jefferson City; 24 grandchildren; and16 great-grandchildren.

One daughter, Mary Jane Scott, and two grandsons preceded her in death.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Stanislaus Catholic Church. The Rev. Louis E. Dorn will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Visitation will be 4-8 p.m. Thursday at Dulle-Trimble Funeral Home and from 9-10 a.m. Friday at the church.

Memorials are suggested to the Vitae Society or St. Stanislaus Catholic Church.

FRANKE

William Edward Franke, 69,  Jefferson City, died June 28, 2001 at his home.

He was born June 13, 1932, in  Jefferson City, a son of Otto F. and Rose M. Pirner Franke. He was married Dec. 17, 1960, in California, to Mary E. Thornberry, who died Feb. 25, 1997.

He was a 1950 graduate of St. Peter's High School.

He was a store manager for Wal-Mart and previously worked for Westlake Hardware until his retirement.

He served in the Navy during the Korean War.

He was a member Concord Baptist Church and was a lifetime member of VFW Post 1003 and American Legion Roscoe Enloe Post 5. He was a lifetime member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie 2693.

Survivors include: two daughters, Mary Jane Armour,  Jefferson City, and Shirley Lee, Kansas City; one brother, Louis F. Franke,  Jefferson City; 11 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.

Services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Houser-Millard Funeral Directors. The Rev. Monte Shinkle will officiate. Burial will be in Hawthorn Memorial Gardens Cemetery.

Visitation will be 5-8 p.m. Friday.

Memorials are suggested to the Concord Baptist Church Building Fund or Meals on Wheels.

HOFF-BURNS

Services were Monday for Grant Wesley Hoff-Burns, infant son of Charles Burns and Andrea Hoff, Holts Summit, who died shortly after birth June 19, 2001, at Boone Hospital Center, Columbia.

Other survivors include: maternal grandparents, Ivey and Sandy Hoff, Holts Summit, and paternal grandparents, Charles and Margaret Burns, Holts Summit.

Private graveside services were in Riverview Cemetery. The Rev. David Higgs officiated.

Arrangements were under the direction of Houser-Millard Funeral Directors.

RUETHER

Harry R. Ruether, 76,  Jefferson City, died June 27, 2001 at his home.

He was born Jan. 11, 1925, in St. Louis, a son of Harry P. and Elizabeth Franke Ruether Sr. He was married in 1948 to Loretta Green who died in 1980. He was married in 1982 to Agnes Schneider, who survives at the home.

He served in the Navy during World War II and worked as a carpenter until his retirement in 1987. He was a volunteer at St. Marys Health Center.

He was a lifelong member of St. Peter Parish, American Legion Post 5, VFW Post 1003 and F.O.E. Golden Eagle Aerie 2693. He was a 50-year member of Carpenters Local 945.

Other survivors include: two sons, Donald Ruether, Russellville, and Gary Ruether,  Jefferson City; three daughters, Karen Phillips, Russellville, Pamela Koestner, Brazito and Brenda Wunderlich, Lohman; three stepdaughters, Betty Reinke, Anchorage, Alaska, Dorothy Tate, Nixa and Ruth Schneider,  Jefferson City; 13 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Services will be at noon Saturday at St. Peter's Chapel. The Rev. Joseph Corel will officiate. Burial will be in St. Peters Cemetery.

Visitation will be 5-7 p.m. Friday at Houser-Millard Funeral Directors, with a Fraternal Order of Eagles service at 7 p.m. and a prayer service at 7:15 p.m.

Memorials are suggested to Vogelweid Learning Center.

SMITH

Tressie Smith, 89, Iberia, died June 28, 2001, at St. Elizabeth Care Center.

She was born March 2, 1912, in Crocker, a daughter of George and Susan Hendricks Gale. She was married Dec. 23, 1934, in Crocker to Conrad "Cap" Smith, who died April 20, 1970.

She was a homemaker.

She was a member of Iberia First Christian Church.

Survivors include: one son, Donald Max Smith, St. Louis; one daughter, Connie Wilson, Iberia; four grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Rekus Funeral Home, Iberia. The Rev. Rick Smith will officiate. Burial will be in Iberia City Cemetery.

Visitation will be 5-8 p.m. Friday.

Memorials are suggested to St. Elizabeth Care Center.

BIRKNER

Frank Paul Birkner, 60, New Bloomfield, died June 27, 2001, at St. Marys Health Center.

He was born July 18, 1942, in St. Louis, a son of Frank and Lillie Eaton Birkner. He was married to Oma Louise Birkner, who preceded him in death. He also was married Dec. 27, 1991, to Joy Siegel, who survives at the home.

He was employed as a training technician at Fulton State Hospital for 26 years. He retired in 1998. A member of Lebanon Baptist Church, McGirk, he served in the Army from 1957-1960.

Other survivors include: two daughters, Deborah Baker, McGirk, and Kendra Birkner, of the home; one son, Francis P. Birkner, Wichita, Kan.; two step-daughters, Cynthia Hinse, Centertown, and Sonja Silva,  Jefferson City; two step-sons, Mike Stotler and Harold Stotler, both of  Jefferson City; five brothers, Dan Birkner, Spokane, Wash., Mike Birkner, Derby, Kan., Bob Birkner and Richard Birkner, both of St. James, and Steve Birkner, Camdenton; 12 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one grandson.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Lebanon Baptist Church, McGirk. The Rev. Bobby Kelly will officiate. Burial will be in California City Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. today and from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday at Debo Funeral Home, Holts Summit.
