SUMMERS
Dr. Joseph S. Summers Jr., 85, Jefferson City, died Sept. 13, 2001, at St. Marys Health Center.
He was born Aug. 26, 1916, in Jefferson City, a son of Dr. Joseph S., Sr. and Nettie Pickett Summers. He was married April 8, 1941, to Amy Lydia Koopmans, who survives at the home.
He graduated from Jefferson City High School in 1933 and Jefferson City Junior College in 1935. He was honored by Jefferson City High School as the "Distinguished Alumni of the Year" in 1987. He attended medical school at the University of Missouri and received his medical degree from Washington University School of Medicine in 1940. He also earned other undergraduate and graduate degrees.
He was a Boy Scout and an Eagle Scout. He attended the World Jamborees in Hungary in 1933 and in the Netherlands in 1939. He served as a senior camp counselor of Maries River Boy Scouts and was an early member of the Order of the Arrow.
He interned at St. Louis City Hospital and was an Army veteran of World War II.
He received training in radiology at the University of Minnesota from 1945 to 1949 and pioneered radiology in Central Missouri. He was on the medial staffs of 10 regional hospitals and clinics throughout Central Missouri and was a consultant at Ft. Leonard Wood. He founded the Central Missouri School of Radiology Technicians.
He was a president of the Cole County Medical Society. He was president of the Missouri State Radiology Society, the medical staff of St. Marys Health Center and the Board of Regents at St. Marys Health Center. He served on the Board of Governors at Memorial Community Hospital.
He was awarded a fellowship in the American College of Radiology and was involved in other national medical societies. He retired in 1981.
He was a member of the Jefferson City Rotary Club; the Jefferson City Country Club; the Historical Society of the City of Jefferson and the Cole County Historical Society, where he served as president. He helped redevelopment parts of the downtown area.
He founded Summers Publishing Company and wrote several books on Jefferson City and local history. He was a private pilot and a member of various flying organizations. He was founder and president of the Missouri Pilots Association. His held three U.S. patents in automobile safety and was instrumental in the passing of current seat belt laws.
He was a member of Grace Episcopal Church and the All Saints of the Desert in Sun City, Ariz. He served on the vestry, as senior warden under several rectors, was a lay reader and chalice administrator. He taught adult Sunday school.
Other survivors include: two sons, Dr. William Koopmans Summers, Albuquerque, N.M., and Joseph Stewart Summers III, Richardson, Texas ; two daughters, Dorothy Summers Dallmeyer, Jefferson City, and Amy Kay Summers Wadum, Richardson, Texas ; ten grandchildren; and three great grandchildren.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at Grace Episcopal Church. The Rev. Harvel Sanders will officiate. Graveside services with military honors will be in Riverview Cemetery.
Visitation will be 1-3 p.m. Sunday at Freeman Mortuary.
Memorials are suggested to Grace Episcopal Church, the Cole County Historical Society, or the Hospice of Jefferson City and Mid-Missouri.

Terry Summers, 48, Holts Summit, died Sept. 10, 2001, at St. Marys Health Center.

WALLIS
Mary Louise Wallis, 76, Kaiser, died Sept. 10, 2001, at Lake Regional Hospital, Osage Beach.

BRAND
Lora Bertie Brand, 81, Jefferson City, died Sept. 12, 2001, at Villa Marie Skilled Nursing Facility.
She was born Nov. 15, 1919, in Brumley, a daughter of Daniel W. and Lena May Wright Robinett. She was married Dec. 4, 1935, in Honey Creek, to Otto E. Brand, who died Aug. 13, 1985.
A lifelong resident of the Central Missouri area, she attended school in rural Miller County.
She was a homemaker. She had been employed by the Oberman Manufacturing Company and Security Window and Door Company. She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church.
Survivors include: one daughter, Joyce E. Lage, Jefferson City; one brother, Charles Daniel Robinett, Wichita, Kan.; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
One daughter, Arline Hake, died June 3, 1985. One grandson also preceded her in death.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Freeman Mortuary. The Rev. Jerome Brownlee will officiate. Burial will be in Hawthorn Memorial Gardens.
Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. today.
Memorials are suggested to Villa Marie Nursing Center or Trinity Lutheran Church.
BRUCE
Tavia Bruce, 97, Eugene, died Sept. 12, 2001, in Eldon.
She was born Feb. 21, 1904, in Miller County, a daughter of George W. and Minnie Williams Jenkins. She was married June 21, 1922, in Tuscumbia, to James Harry Bruce, who died Oct. 4, 1955.
She worked as a secretary for the Missouri Department of Revenue for more than 20 years, and was a member of Eugene Christian Church.
She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Eugene Chapter 386 for 55 years, and was a member of the Eugene Willing Workers Club.
Survivors include: one sister, Helen LaMont, Jefferson City; one brother, Dennie Jenkins, Eldon; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by one daughter, Joan Shipman, and by one great-grandson.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Phillips Funeral Home, Eldon. The Rev. Gary Baker and the Rev. Richard Harrison will officiate. Burial will be in Eugene Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. today, with an Eastern Star service at 7 p.m.
Memorials are suggested to the American Cancer Society or Eugene Christian Church.
TILLMAN
Josephine G. Tillman, 93, Linn, died Sept. 13, 2001, at Green Meadows Skilled Care, Linn.
She was born Aug. 11, 1908, in Koeltztown, a daughter of Phillip and Anna Leonard Balkenbusch. She was married Dec. 18, 1933, to Clarence Tillman, who died May 6, 1946.
A lifelong area resident, she received her teaching degree from Warrensburg State Teachers College. She taught at Mt. Areal School. She retired after 25 years as Osage County clerk, recorder of deeds. She was then employed at Knoerr Jewelry Store, and with Vogel Insurance Company in Linn.
She was a member of St. George Church, the church choir, St. Ann's Sodality the ladies sewing circle and the Legion of Mary.
Survivors include: three sons, David Tillman, Denver, Joe Tillman, Linn, and Frank Tillman, Manhattan, Kan.; four daughters, Donna Mae Tillman, Oceanside, Calif., Catherine Jensen, Lacrescent, Minn., Betty Reinsch, Gray Summit, and Virginia Ames, Holts Summit; 25 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 9:30 a.m. Monday at St. George Church. The Rev. Brendan Doyle will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Visitation will be from 5-7:30 p.m. Sunday at Morton Funeral Home, Linn, with a prayer service at 7:30 p.m.
Memorials are suggested to St. George Church, or to Osage County Special Services.
TYNES
Anna Marie Tynes, 78, Linn, died Sept. 12, 2001, at Boone Hospital Center, Columbia.
Arrangements are at Morton Funeral Home, Linn.
ATCHISON
Dolly Atchison, 64, Jamestown, died Sept. 13, 2001, at her home.
She was born July 31, 1937, in Jefferson City, a daughter of Herman and Sophia Bond Bryan. She was married Dec. 11, 1954, in Fulton, to William Allen Lee Atchison, who died June 7, 1990.
She attended school in Jefferson City and was a cab driver for Yellow Cab and Columbia Cab Companies in Columbia, and Yellow Cab Company in Fulton and Mexico. She was a member of Assembly of God Church, Jamestown.
Survivors include: four daughters, Sheila June Parsons, Olean, Cindy Sue Williams, Auxvasse, and Lorrie Dee Wyatt and Elizabeth Carolyn Starkey, both of Jamestown; one brother, Marvin Bryan, Enon; seven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
One infant son, William Atchison, died in 1955. One daughter, Marlene Atchison, died in 1969.
Services will be at 5 p.m. Sunday at Assembly of God Church. The Rev. Steve Foley, the Rev. Jesse Baker and Coleen Kivlahan will officiate. Burial will be at a later date.
Visitation will be from 4-5 p.m. Sunday at the church.

GIER
Ersal P. Gier, 79, Russellville, died Sept. 12, 2001, in Jefferson City.
He was born Aug. 20, 1922, in Bagnell, a son of Elzie and Jennie Wooley Gier. He was married Jan. 16, 1945, in Tuscumbia, to Hazel May Scott, who survives at the home.
He attended Walnut Grove School and was a Navy veteran of World War II. He was a farmer. He was a member of Greenridge Baptist Church in Eldon, serving as deacon since 1967.
Other survivors include: one daughter, Linda Killday, Eldon; two brothers, Glen Gier, Westminster, Calif., and Oleph Gier, Eldon; two sisters, Neva Pearon, Sedalia, and Nadine Opie, Eldon; four grandchildren; three step grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and two step great-grandchildren.
One daughter, Barbara Jean Allison, preceded him in death.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Greenridge Baptist Church. The Rev. Bob Hoskins will officiate. Burial will be in Greenridge Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. today at Phillips Funeral Home.
