MANNING
Carole Michele Manning, 53, Jefferson City, died Jan. 18, 2002, at St. Marys Health Center.
She was born Dec. 19, 1948, in San Diego, a daughter of Roy A. and Flora Lee Powers Miller. She was married in San Diego, to Richard Manning, who died in 1976.
She was a 1967 graduate of Monte Vista High School, Spring Valley, Calif. She worked as a respiratory therapist at Chula Vista Community Hospital, Chula Vista, Calif., for 22 years and at St. Marys Health Center since November 2001.
Survivors include one sister, Victoria L. Hall, Jefferson City.
Private family services will be held in California at a later date.
Arrangements are under the direction of Dulle-Trimble Funeral Home.
OLD
Effie Mae Old, 98, Ashland, died Jan. 19, 2002, at her home.
She was born Dec. 20, 1903, in Hartsburg, a daughter of William and Martha Nichols Blythe. She was married Dec. 12, 1925, in Jefferson City, to Willis "Owen" Old, who died Jan. 15, 1969.
A homemaker, she was a member of the Mount Pleasant Baptist Church, Hartsburg; the Ashland Baptist Church, Ashland; the Southern Boone County Senior Center, Ashland; and the Friendship Club, Hartsburg.
Survivors include: one son, Willie Old, Hartsburg; one grandchild, two great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
One daughter, Nana Fern Old, preceded her in death.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Ashland Baptist Church, Ashland. The Rev. Jim West will officiate. Burial will be in Mount Pleasant Cemetery, Hartsburg.
Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. Monday at Robinson Funeral Home, Ashland.

SCHERR
Ruth DeLano Scherr, 97, Jefferson City, died Jan. 18, 2002, at St. Joseph Home for the Aged.
She was born Feb. 6, 1904, in Fulton, Kan., a daughter of Leigh D. and Margaret Irvine DeLano. She was married June 15, 1927, in Fulton, Kan., to Elliott Brown Scherr, who died Feb. 4, 1965.
She received a high school diploma and an associate of arts degree from Stephens College, Columbia. She also received a bachelor of arts degree from the University of Kansas-Lawrence and later obtained a teaching certificate from the University of Missouri-Columbia.
She taught religious education in the Columbia Public Schools and was a librarian at Stephens College. She later worked for the Missouri State Historical Society in Columbia, retiring in 1974.
She was president of the University of Missouri Fortnightly Club and the Columbia Council of Churchwomen. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Columbia from 1929 to 1999, later becoming a member of Wesley United Methodist Church, Jefferson City.
Survivors include: one son, Dr. David D. Scherr, Jefferson City; two sisters, Dorothy Hudson, Fort Scott, Kan., and Elizabeth McCowan, Jefferson City; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 1:30 p.m. today at Houser-Millard Funeral Directors, Jefferson City. The Rev. David Conley will officiate. Graveside services will be at 1:30 p.m. Monday at Fairview Cemetery in Fulton, Kan.
Visitation will follow the funeral service.
Memorials are suggested to Wesley United Methodist Church.
SCOTT
Howard A. Scott, 87, Lake Ozark, died Jan. 18, 2002, in Lake Ozark.
He was born March 16, 1914, in Jennings, Kan., a son of H.F. and Nellie Register Scott. He was married Oct. 20, 1938, in Oberlin, Kan., to Garnett Clawson, who died March 8, 2000.
He was co-owner and operator of the Scott Gas Company for over 50 years, and a member of the First Christian Church of Eldon. He was a past president of the Eldon Country Club, a past master of the Masonic Lodge of Eldon, and a member of the Shrine and Scottish Right.
Survivors include: two sons, H. Wayne Scott and Myron D. Scott, both of Eldon; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Phillips Funeral Home, Eldon. The Rev. Walter D. Simpson will officiate. Burial will be in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery, Eldon.
Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Monday.
Memorials are suggested to the First Christian Church Building Fund of Eldon, Mo.
TOALSON
Elva Mae Toalson, 94, Ashland, died Jan. 18, 2002, at Ashland Healthcare, Ashland.
She was born May 10, 1907, in Boone County, a daughter of Ula "Newt" G. and Hattie Rice Thomas. She was married June 19, 1931, in Ashland, to Oscar "O.T." Toalson, who died Feb. 13, 1985.
She was a member of the Nashville Baptist Church, Ashland, for 50 years.
She worked for the University of Missouri Hospital in housekeeping until retiring in 1972.
Survivors include: one son, Harold Toalson, Columbia; and one grandson.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Nashville Baptist Church. The Rev. Bart Tichenor and the Rev. Kevin Collins will officiate. Burial will be in Nashville Cemetery, Ashland.

Harold Roling, 74, Jefferson City, died Jan. 19, 2002, at Capital Region Medical Center.

Myrtle G. Rademan, 79, Jefferson City, died Jan. 19, 2002, at St. Marys Health Center.

BAUER
Raymond Francis Bauer, 70, Jefferson City, died Jan. 19, 2002, at Capital Region Medical Center.

BACKES
Laura B. Backes, 91, Loose Creek, died Jan. 20, 2002, at St. Marys Health Center.
She was born Aug. 30, 1910, in Chamois, a daughter of John and Elizabeth Nilges Oidtman. She was married Oct. 22, 1936, in Jefferson City, to Adolph H. Backes, who survives at the home.
A lifelong area resident, she attended St. Peter's School and Immaculate Conception School. A homemaker, she had been employed with Stevens Printing Company for 12 years.
She was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Loose Creek, where she was a former communion minister. She also was a member of St. Ann's Sodality and the Legion of Mary Auxiliary.
Other survivors include: two son, Theon Charles Backes, Wilmington, N.C., and Roger Backes, Jefferson City; two daughters, Marge Baumgartner and Martha Kleindienst, both of Jefferson City; nine grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
One daughter, Elizabeth Ann Backes, died in 1959. One grandson also preceded her in death.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Immaculate Conception Church, Loose Creek. The Rev. Gregory Meystrik, the Rev. Christopher Smith, the Rev. Brian Driscoll, the Rev. David Buescher and the Rev. Rob Fields will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Wednesday at the church, with a prayer service at 7:30 p.m.
Memorials are suggested to Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Loose Creek.

BERGTHOLDT
Christian Dudley Bergtholdt, 95, Eldon, died Jan. 20, 2002, in Eldon.
He was born Feb. 7, 1906, in Sacramento, Calif., a son of Jacob E. and Mabel Culver Bergtholdt. He was married Feb. 22, 1932, to Carol Mosher, who died May 30, 1990.
He was a farmer. A past member of St. Andrews Presbyterian Church, Yuba City, Calif., he also was a member of Aztec Presbyterian Church, Aztec, N.M., and attended Lake Ozark Christian Church, Lake Ozark.
Survivors include: two sons, Edward William Bergtholdt, Colbert, Wash., Harry T. Bergtholdt, Sierra Vista, Ariz.; one daughter, Vera Dickerson, Eldon; one brother, Henry S. Bergtholdt, San Jose, Calif.; eight grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
Services will be at a later date. The body was cremated.

CHRISTIAN
Ruth Nail Christian, 88, Webster City, Iowa, formerly of Jefferson City, died Jan. 19, 2002, at Crestview Manor, Webster City.
She was born Oct. 31, 1913, in Webster City, a daughter of Allen and Olive Crist Nail. She was married Jan. 16, 1932, to Paul Wilson Christian, who preceded her in death.
She was a 1931 graduate of Lincoln High School, Webster City.
She was a member of the Christian Church in Jefferson City, where she lived for 42 years. She also lived in Columbia and the state of California.
Survivors include: two sons, Roger Christian, Torrance, Calif., and Montie Christian, Superior, Colo.; two sisters, Jesse Wilson and Margaret Opheim, both of Webster City; two grandchildren; three step grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and five step great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 5-9 p.m. today at Foster Funeral Home, Webster City, with a prayer service at 7:30 p.m. Pastor Ray Artrip will officiate.
Graveside services will be at 3 p.m. Tuesday in Hawthorne Memorial Gardens, Jefferson City.
