MILLARD
Linda C. Cool Millard, 59, Jefferson City, died Jan. 30, 2002, at Capital Region Medical Center.
She was born Nov. 20, 1942, in Centerville, Iowa, a daughter of Raymond O. and Laura Edna Veach Cool. Her mother survives in Jefferson City.
She graduated from Ottumwa High School in 1960 and received a bachelor of science-botany, with a minor in chemistry, from Northeast Missouri State University in Kirksville in 1970. She received her doctorate in medicine from Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine, in 1974. She completed her internship at Still Regional Medical Center from 1974-1975 and was a resident OB/GYN at University of Kansas Medical Center, Kansas City, from 1987-1990.
She received the Outstanding Women Student Award in 1974 from Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine. She was a general family practitioner from 1978 to 1985 and was co-owner of the Carol Rae, Inc. Birthing Center, Family Practice, dba Women for Women Clinic from 1985-1987. She was owner of LCM Inc. dba Women for Women Birthing Clinic, Obstetrics/Gynecology since 1990.
She served as chief of OB/GYN department at Capital Region Medical Center from 1983-1987, 1991-1993, July 1999 to October 2001. She was vice chief of OB/GYN department of Capital Region Medical Center from 1984-1999 and was the director-OB Clinic, Family Practice Resident Clinic at Capital Region Medical Center in 1993. She was chairman-infection control at Capital Region Medical Center from 1984-1986 and was chairman-utilization review committee at Capital Region Medical Center in 1982. She was chairman-library committee from 1981-1982.
She was a member of the American Osteopathic Association and the Missouri Association Osteopathic Physicians & Surgeons.
Other survivors include: one daughter, Kristine Millard, Jefferson City; one sister, Sondra Cool Biddle, Pueblo, Colo.; two brothers, Thomas Cool, North Augusta, S.C., and John Cool, Canton, Mich.; and two granddaughters
Private services will be Saturday. Burial will be at the family farm in Iowa.
Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Friday at Houser-Millard Funeral Directors.
Memorials are suggested to the Conservation Federation of Missouri and American Cancer Society.
MINING
James Sterling Mining, 77, Flower Mound, Texas , formerly of Jefferson City, died Nov. 24, 2001.
He was born June 21, 1924, in Peerless, Texas , to John and Ida Mining. He was married to Neva Felz, who survives in Flower Mound.
He picked cotton in Cooper, Texas , then built highways in Colorado as a teen-ager with the Civilian Conservation Corps.
He was a Navy veteran of World War II and earned the Purple Heart.
In 1950, he began service with the Kansas City Fire Department. He was fire captain and secretary treasurer of the Fire Fighters Union for 25 years.
He worked for the Missouri Department of Agriculture from 1983 until his retirement in 1998.
He helped implement the Animal Care Facilities Act Program.
Other survivors include: seven children; two sisters, Mary Lee Murphrey and Bobbie Nell Higgins; 12 grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.
Arrangements were under the direction of Rhoton Funeral Home, Carrollton, Texas .
REED
Bert R. Reed, 97, Jefferson City, died Jan. 30, 2002, at Jewish Center for the Aged, St. Louis.
He was born Dec. 6, 1904, in Vulcan, a son of Charlie M. and Martha Elizabeth Hickman Reed. He was married Aug. 15, 1931, in St. Louis, to Kathryn Elizabeth Rice, who died June 3, 1995.
He attended school in the Iron County Missouri School District 45 in Vulcan.
He worked in the logging industry. He also worked at Valley Farm Ice Cream Company and St. Louis Ice Cream Company before retiring from the dairy industry.
He then worked in delivery for Rauscher Chevrolet in Kirkwood until he retired.
He was a member of the Baptist Church, Teamsters Local 603 and Teamsters Local 618.
Survivors include: one daughter, Judy Kathryn Suchland, Glencoe; one brother, Clyde Reed, Vulcan; one sister, Maple Wattler Jeans, Melville; three grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Buescher Memorial Home. The Rev. Thomas W. Nelson will officiate. Burial will be in Riverview Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 1-2 p.m. Sunday.
Memorials are suggested to the charity of the donor's choice.
RIPKA
Darrell Gene Ripka, 57, Meta, died Jan. 30, 2002, at his home.
He was born June 15, 1944, in Jefferson City, a son of Albert "Bud" and Lorene Hodge Ripka. His mother survives in Meta. He was married Nov. 28, 1964, in Tuscumbia, to Jeannette Mary Scheulen, who survives at the home.
He was owner and operator of Ripka Wood Products, Meta.
He was a member of Vienna Masonic Lodge 94.
Survivors include one daughter, Melinda Sue Stumpe, Meta, and three grandchildren.
One son, David Ripka, died Aug. 26, 1996.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, with a Masonic service at 10 a.m., at Rekus Funeral Home in Meta. The Rev. Gene Edwards will officiate. Inurnment will be at Stokes Cemetery near Meta.
Visitation will be from 9:30-10:30 a.m. Saturday.
BAUMGARTNER
Ivan "Bud" Baumgartner, 73, St. James, died Jan. 31, 2002, at his home.
He was born Feb. 4, 1928, near Belle, a son of Clyde O. and Mary Ellen Backues Baumgartner. He was married June 30, 1951, in Salem, Ark., to Helen Southard, who survives.
He retired as a drywall contractor with more than 50 years in the International Brotherhood of Painters and Allied Trades, St. Louis Local Union 2341.
He was a member of the Vichy Masonic Lodge 531 AF&AM.
He was an Army Air Corp veteran of World War II.
Survivors include: two sons, Lance Baumgartner and Daryl Baumgartner, both of Belle; two daughters, LouAnn Mitchell, Kansas City, and Debbie Gray, Belle; one sister, Iva Kearns, Granite City, Ill.; one brother, Terry Baumgartner, Cumberland, Wis.; seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Sunday at Sassmann's Funeral Home, Belle. Burial will be in Liberty Cemetery.
Visitation will begin at 5 p.m. Saturday.
GRANNERT
Minnie Grannert, 95, Hermann, died Jan. 31, 2002, at Frene Valley Geriatric & Rehabilitation Center, Hermann.
She was born Feb. 13, 1906, in Hope, a daughter of Fritz and Caroline Schuldt Grannert.
She was a graduate of Linn R-2 School and Phillips University, Enid, Okla. She was a teacher in Missouri and Kentucky.
A former Grundy, Va., resident, she taught at the Mountain Mission School in Grundy for 54 years.
Survivors include: one brother, Kenneth L. Gove, Buffalo, Wyo.; five sisters, Anna Schulte, Hermann, Mary Hemeyer, Marshall, Velma Niewald, Morrison, Selma Lipskoch, Chamois, and Margaret Lipskoch, Mt. Sterling.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Morton Funeral Home, Linn. James M. Swiney and the Rev. Mark Gregor will officiate. Burial will be in Oklahoma Church of Christ Cemetery, Osage County.
Visitation will be from 9-11 a.m. Saturday.

HUTCHISON
Bettie Joe Hutchison, 63, Crocker, formerly of Ashland, died Jan. 31, 2002, in Columbia.
She was born Oct. 7, 1938, in Boone County, a daughter of Roland A. and Juanita H. Holland Via. She was married March 13, 1959, in Columbia, to Homer Hutchison, who survives.
She worked for Ashland Healthcare in housekeeping and retired in 2001.
Survivors include: one son, Homer Andrew Hutchison, Columbia; three daughters, Doris Hutchison and Cindy Moore, both of Crocker, and Louann Hutchison, Columbia; two sisters, Inez Conner, state of Florida, and Sara Maybrey, Columbia; and nine grandchildren.
One daughter preceded her in death.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Robinson Funeral Home, Ashland. The Rev. Maric DeVier will officiate. Burial will be in New Salem Cemetery, Ashland.
Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. today.
SHORT
Lewis E. Short, 84, California, died Jan. 30, 2002, in California.
He was born Oct. 1, 1917, in High Point, a son of William A. and Edna Rebecca (Finke) Short.
He graduated from Olean High School in 1935, was a livestock farmer and an auction clerk in Fulton, Crocker, Sedalia and Versailles and at local farm sales. He was connected to the Olean Sale Barn and the Olean Livestock Market for 64 years.
He served as Jefferson City Production Credit Association representative in Miller, Moniteau and Morgan counties from 1938 to 1945. He served for 15 years on the community and county committees of the ASCS in Moniteau County.
He was a member of the Olean Baptist Church and attended the Hopewell Union Church.
Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Phillips Funeral Home, Eldon. The Rev. Jasper Hunter will officiate. Burial will be in Enloe Cemetery, Russellville.
