SMITH

Sr. Eugene Marie Smith, FSM, 95, Richmond Heights, formerly of  Jefferson City, died March 15, 2002, at St. Mary of the Angels Convent, Richmond Heights.

She was born Jan. 13, 1907, Genevieve Aurelia Smith, in Leavenworth, Kan.

She joined the congregation of Franciscan Sisters of Mary in 1933 and professed her final vows in 1939. She graduated from St. Mary's Hospital in Kansas City and received her bachelor's and masters nursing degrees from Saint Louis University, where she also earned a certificate in hospital administration. Later she received a certificate in alcoholism studies from Rutgers University.

She served as a nurse at St. Mary's Hospital in Kansas City. She served as administrator of St. Marys Health Center in  Jefferson City from 1957 to 1964 and at St. Mary's Infirmary until its closure. She also served as administrator of St. Mary's in Kansas City.

She worked with the Detoxification Center, a joint program the St. Louis Police Department, Washington University and St. Mary's Infirmary. She was a member of the Kansas City Council on Alcoholism and served in the treatment program for Jackson County Public Hospital. She served as an alcoholism counselor and helped with various programs, including the Salvation Army.

Survivors include: one sister, Sr. Francis Jane Smith, CSJ, St. Louis.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Mary of the Angels Convent, Richmond Heights. Burial will be in Resurrection Cemetery, St. Louis.

Visitation will be from 2-8 p.m. Tuesday at St. Mary of the Angels Convent, with a wake service at 7 p.m..

Memorials are suggested to the Franciscan Sisters of Mary Tribute Fund, 1100 Bellevue Avenue, St. Louis, MO 63117-1883.

BAKER

Clarence Jones Baker, 78, Linn, died March 18, 2002, at University of Missouri-Columbia Hospital and Clinics.

He was born Feb. 28, 1924, near Linn, a son of John and Annie Vogel Baker. He was married Sept. 1, 1949, to Claudia Marie Ferguson, who survives at the home.

He was a 1942 graduate of Linn High School. He received a bachelor of science degree in agriculture from the University of Missouri-Columbia in 1949. He was an Army Air Corp veteran of World War II. He worked for Three Rivers Electric Coop as member service advisor until 1951. From 1951 to1956, he owned and operated a dairy farm near Linn. He worked as a geological engineer for 32 years for the Missouri State Highway Department, retiring in 1988. After retirement, he operated a beef cattle farm.

He was a member of St. John's United Methodist Church. He was an honorary life member of the Osage County Historical Society, a member of Linn Lodge 326 AF&AM, MoDot retirees, and Missouri Folklore Society.

Survivors include: three sons, Byron Paul Baker and Clell Kay Baker, both of Linn, and Clate Jay Baker, Springfield; one daughter, Aimee Jane Seymour, Fairfax; one brother, Russell Baker, Linn; two sisters, Irene Ebert, Linn, and Fay Schneider, St. Louis; and nine grandchildren.

One son, John Richard Baker, preceded him in death.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday in St. John's United Methodist Church in Linn. Pastor Tony Townley will officiate. Burial will be in Linn Memorial Park Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. Friday at Morton Funeral Home in Linn.

Memorials are suggested to St. John's United Methodist Church or the Osage County Historical Society.

RUSSELL

Johnnie Vernard Russell, 72,  Jefferson City, died March 18, 2002, at Capital Region Medical Center.

He was born Feb. 3, 1930, in  Jefferson City, a son of John W. and Clara Mae Phillips Russell. He was married May 16, 1950, in Washington , D.C., to Dorothy Mae Shotland, who preceded him in death.

He attended the  Jefferson City Public Schools. He worked as a foreman for Von Hoffmann Press, Inc., for many years until his retirement. He was an Air Force veteran. He was a Baptist.

Survivors include: five sons, John William Russell and Daniel Lee Russell, both of Ashland, Kennan Wayne Russell and Randy Joe Russell, both of  Jefferson City, and Michael Russell, Holts Summit; one daughter, Beverly Joan Boehm,  Jefferson City; three brothers, Claude William Russell, Roosevelt, Ariz., and Forest I. Russell and Carl Cecil Russell, both of Holts Summit; three sisters, Hattie Myrtle Langendorfer, Chamois, Amanda Josephine Beuckman, Tucson, Ariz., and Lola Mae Jacobs, Brighton, Colo.; 12 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Buescher Memorial Home. The Rev. Shane Crum will officiate. Burial with military honors will be in Hickory Hill Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. today.

Memorials are suggested to the Hickory Hill Cemetery Association.

STUCKEY

Vicki Lynn Wells Stuckey, 44, Columbus, Ohio, died March 16, 2002, at her home.

She was born April 14, 1957, in Mexico, a daughter of Albert and Ann Forest Wells. Her father survives in Midland, Ga. Her mother, Ann Hatfield, survives in Mexico.

She graduated from Tyler Texas College and was an Army veteran.

Other survivors include one sister, Joy Michael Nilges,  Jefferson City;

Services will be at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Jerry Spears Funeral Home, Columbus. Burial will be in Greenlawn Cemetery, Columbus.

Visitation will be from 1-3 p.m. Wednesday.

WOODLAND

James Wayne Woodland, 60,  Jefferson City, died March 18, 2002, at St. Marys Health Center.

He was born March 14, 1942, in  Jefferson City, a son of Jewel and Geraldine Harris Woodland, who survive in  Jefferson City. He was married July 15, 1961, to Sandra Ortmeyer, who survives in Owensville. He was married Aug. 29, 1986, in Ashland, to Lanetta Shaw, who survives at the home.

He was a 1960 graduate of  Jefferson City High School. He was a member of Painters Local 1185 before establishing Woodland Painting & Decorating.

He was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie 2693 for 35 years and was a member of NASCAR.

Other survivors include: one son, Keith Woodland,  Jefferson City; three daughters, Michele Test and Sherri Cox, both of  Jefferson City, and Kristina Woodland, of the home; one brother, J.C. Woodland, Sarasota, Fla.; one sister, Jackie Patton, Prairie Home; and six grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Houser-Millard Funeral Directors. The Rev. Bernice Willis will officiate. Burial will be in Hawthorn Memorial Gardens.

Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. Wednesday.

Memorials are suggested to the Kristina Woodland Educational Fund.

PLATTER

John Edward Platter, 56, Camdenton, died March 16, 2002, at Lake Regional Hospital, Osage Beach.

He was born March 23, 1945, near Linn Creek, a son of Albert and Donnie F. Morris Platter. He was married May 27, 1966, to Linda Jackson, who survives at the home.

A lifelong resident of the Camdenton area, he graduated from Camdenton High School in 1963. He owned and operated P.J.'s Mini Mart since 1994. He was a Baptist.

Other survivors include: two daughters, Kimberly Stout, Camdenton, and Tina Lynn Platter, of the home; one brother, Kenneth Dale Platter, Bedias, Texas ; one sister, Mary Frances Hunter, Holden; and two grandchildren.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Allee-Holman-Howe Funeral Home, Camdenton. The Rev. Dennis North will officiate. Burial will be in Freedom Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. today.

Memorials are suggested to the Kirstin and Tate Stout Education Fund.

MARRIOTT

Malcolm Everett Marriott, 90, Versailles, died March 16, 2002, at St. Marys Health Center.

He was born Nov. 10, 1911, in Camden County, a son of Speed A. and Lelia Phillips Marriott. He was married to Della Williams. He was married to Aileen V. Hayner, who preceded him in death. He was married Erma Hodges Bartlett, who survives at the home.

He worked for Tweedie Footwear in Versailles and  Jefferson City. He later worked for Patton Scaffolding and Remington Arms and Lake City Arsenal, all in Kansas City. He was a member of Versailles United Methodist Church.

He was a member of the Palestine Commandery 17 in Independence and Versailles Masonic Lodge 320 AF & AM.

He was a past member of Mount Washington Lodge in Independence; provost guard of the Central States Shrine Association; Ararat Shrine Temple in Kansas City; Versailles Order of the Eastern Star Chapter 410; past worthy matron nine times of Mount Washington Lodge in Independence and Barnett and Versailles Order of the Eastern Star.

Other survivors include: two daughters, Jean Ellen Garnett, Versailles, and Loretta Greaves, Bolivar; two brothers, Creed Marriott, Versailles, and Waldo Denzil Marriott, Redding, Calif.; grandchildren; great-grandchildren; and great-great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at United Methodist Church, Versailles. The Rev. Gailya Dow and the Rev. Jeanie Leeper will officiate. Burial will be in Versailles Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. today at Kidwell-Garber Funeral Home, Versailles, with Eastern Star and Masonic services at 7 p.m.

Memorials are suggested to Shriners Hospitals for Children.

ENGLERT

William James "Bill" Englert, 68,  Jefferson City, died March 15, 2002, at Capital Region Medical Center.

He was born Nov. 19, 1933, in  Jefferson City, a son of John and Lena Veit Englert. He was married Dec. 31, 1958, in Carson City, Nev., to Susan Avellar, who survives.

He retired from the Navy as a chief petty officer after serving 22 years. He returned to  Jefferson City in 1978.

Survivors include: five daughters, Jeannette Englert, Columbia, Mary Winkle, Eolia, Susan Ross, Portland, Ore., Kim Love, Martinez, Calif., and Julie Mills, Colton, Calif.; one brother, Jerry Pierson, state of California; three sisters, Pauline Markaway, Mary Byrnes, and Cathy Acree, all of Missouri; and three grandchildren.

He will be buried at sea.

Memorials are suggested to Muscular Dystrophy Fund for the benefit of his grandson, Zackary Winkle, beneficiary account, in care of Central Bank in Missouri.

Arrangements are under the direction of Memorial Funeral Home, Columbia.

BURKS

Merle G. Burks, 84, Macon, formerly of Fulton, died March 17, 2002, at Loch Haven Nursing Home, Macon.

She was born March 29, 1917, in Mokane, a daughter of Benjamin R. and Altha Birdena Bowman Garrett.

She worked for the International Shoe Company in Fulton for more than 20 years and then worked for Fulton State Hospital as an aide for more than 10 years. She was a member of the Church of Christ.

Survivors include one son, Steve Burks, Ethel, and six grandchildren.

Two sons, David Paul Burks and John Raymond Burks, preceded her in death.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Maupin Funeral Home, Fulton. The Rev. Robert Payne will officiate. Burial will be in Hams Prairie Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 1-2 p.m. Thursday.

Memorials are suggested to the Hams Prairie Cemetery Fund, c/o Maupin Funeral Home, 301 Douglas, Fulton, Mo. 65251.
