TOLER

Ralph L. "Lee" Toler, 80, Eldon, died March 24, 2002, at Lake Regional Hospital, Osage Beach.

He was born Feb. 9, 1922, in Clarksburg, a son of John and Daisy Pearl Ison Toler. He was married Oct. 11, 1958, to Nancy L. Thompson, who survives at the home.

He was employed in security. He worked for Pinkerton Security before retiring from J.C. Penney Warehouse in Beuna Park, Calif.

He was a Navy veteran of World War II.

Survivors include: one son, Timothy Toler, Eldon; four daughters, Virginia Bethard, Kenner, La., Tammy Buxton, and Becky Jensen, both of Eldon, and Terrie Puckett, Iberia; one sister, Frances Grimes, Olathe, Kan.; 12 grandchildren; and one great-grandson.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Kidwell-Garber Funeral Home, Versailles. The Rev. Larry Palmgren will officiate. The remains will be cremated.

Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday.

Memorials are suggested to American Cancer Society.

WHITE

Elizabeth "Polly" Gwynn Benbow White , 87, Lake Ozark, died March 22, 2002, at Lake Regional Hospital, Osage Beach.

She was born Sept. 19, 1914, in Baden, Md., a daughter of Francis B. and Elizabeth Ida Burch Gwynn. She was married to Gene Thomas Benbow, who died Sept. 19, 1958. She was married in 1966, to Clarence White , who preceded her in death.

She had lived in the Baden area and graduated from Towson State University in Maryland. She taught school in the Charles County Public School System for more than 33 years.

Survivors include: two sons, George Benbow, LaPlata, Md., and Robert Benbow, Camdenton; and five grandchildren.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Huntt Funeral Home, Waldorf, Md.

Visitation will be from 2-4 p.m. and from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday at Huntt Funeral Home.

Local arrangements are under the direction of Allee-Holman-Howe Funeral Home, Camdenton.

FANCHER

Alta Jean Fancher, 81, Crocker, died March 25, 2002, at Lake Regional Hospital, Osage Beach.

She was born July 9, 1920, in Iberia, a daughter of Joseph M. Sr. and Mary Belle Hensley Lamb. She was married Jan. 6, 1940, in Clayton, to Truman Fancher, who died Oct. 22, 1982.

A homemaker, she was a former member of the Mt. View Church of Christ, near Iberia, and was a member of the Crocker Church of Christ.

Survivors include: two sons, Donald Truman Fancher and Joseph Preston Fancher, both of St. Louis; one daughter, Patricia Sue Brantley, Enterprise, Ala.; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Rekus Funeral Home, Iberia. Jim Meredith will officiate. Burial will be in Livingston Cemetery, near Iberia.

Visitation will be from 1-2 p.m. Wednesday.

Memorials are suggested to the Crocker Church of Christ.

THORNTON

Melanie L. Thornton, 36, Boonville, died March 24, 2002, at Boone Hospital Center, Columbia.

She was born July 23, 1965, in Richmond Heights, a daughter of James R. and Norma Hueste Thornton. Her parents survive in St. Charles. She was married Jan. 1, 1992, in Minneapolis, to Howard W. Weaver, who survives in Boonville.

She graduated from Pattonville High School, St. Louis, and the University of Missouri-Columbia in 1987 with a bachelor of science in social work.

She was a member of St. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Boonville. She worked for the University of Missouri for six years.

The remains were cremated. Services will be at 11 a.m. April 6 at St. George Church, Linn. The Rev. Daniel I.J. Lueckenotte will officiate.

Visitation will be from 9-11 a.m. April 6 at Morton Funeral Home, Linn.

Memorials are suggested to Midwest Transplant Network, 1900 West 47th Place, Suite 400 Westwood, Kan. 66205.

ZUMWALT

Eldon P. Zumwalt, 77, Ashland, died March 25, 2002, at his home in Hartsburg.

He was born March 23, 1925, in Ashland, a son of Ovey B. and Eula Blythe Zumwalt. He was married Nov. 16, 1946, in Hartsburg, to Dorothy Marie Moreau, who survives at the home.

He was a 1943 graduate of Ashland High School and a veteran of World War II. He was a member of the Mount Pleasant Baptist Church, Hartsburg, and a Gold Card Honorary life member of the American Legion Harry B. Pryor Post 152, Ashland, where he served as the post adjutant for 21 years.

He was the Boys State chairman for more than 50 years and transported the boys to and from Warrensburg. He was a Golden Eagle in the Fraternal Order of Eagles Erie 2693.

He was a life member of the VFW 1003 and the Military Order of Cootie of U.S., both of  Jefferson City, and was a paid life member of Forty and Eight.

He worked with Prost Construction, Schell Construction, Temple Stephens Grocery, Salisch Paint and Glass and Roark Aluminum.

He was a deputy in the Boone County Sheriff's Department.

He retired from the security department at the University of Missouri Hospital and Clinics, Columbia.

Other survivors include: one sister, Doris Dean Schmocker, Hartsburg; and one brother, Spencer Zumwalt, Ashland.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Robinson Funeral Home, Ashland. The Rev. Jim Smith will officiate. Burial will be in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery, Hartsburg.

Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m. Wednesday.

Memorials are suggested to a charity of the donor's choice.

BROOKS

Jean S. Brooks, 87,  Jefferson City, died March 26, 2002, at St. Marys Health Center.

She was born Sept. 19, 1914, in Torrance, Calif., a daughter of Richard and Nell Smith. She was married to Phillips Moore Brooks, who died in 1967.

She graduated from Torrance High School and the University of California. She received her masters in library sciences from the University of Missouri-Columbia. She worked as a librarian with St. Louis County Public Library and the Dallas Public Library in Dallas, Texas . She authored a book and several articles about the role of the public library in non-traditional education. She was a resident of the  Jefferson City area for the past 16 years. She was a member of the Weavers Guild, the American Library Association, and a life-member of the Torrance Historical Society.

Survivors include one son, Phillips R. Brooks,  Jefferson City, and one daughter, Lorraine Brooks,  Jefferson City.

A private family service will be held in the state of California.

Arrangements are under the direction of Freeman Mortuary.

HALL

Joe Hall, 57, Fulton, died March 24, 2002, at Callaway Community Hospital, Fulton.

He was born May 17, 1944, in Wickliffe, Ky., a son of Delbert R. and Myrtle Irene Craven Hall. He was married Nov. 23, 1966, in Mokane, to Annie Summers, who survives.

He worked at the Shell station in Fulton before retiring. He had been a truck driver.

Other survivors include: one daughter, Crystal Hall, Fulton; five sisters, Cheryl Hall, Patty Rice and Barbara Action, all of Columbia, Ann Bowden, Harrisburg, and Peggy Jean Summers, Fulton; four brothers, Delbert Hall and Mike Hall, both of Columbia, Darrell Hall, Centertown, and Billy Hall, Cassville; and two grandsons.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Debo Funeral Home, Fulton. The Rev. Norman Potter will officiate. Burial will be Hillcrest Cemetery, Fulton.

Visitation will be from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Thursday.

JOHNSON

Helen Berniece Johnson, 75, Tipton, died March 25, 2002, at St. Marys Health Center.

She was born April 27, 1926, in Latham, a daughter of Harry and Dora Wennett Springer. She was married Dec. 26, 1942, in Tipton, to Ray Johnson, who died Feb. 26, 1986.

She was a member of the First Baptist Church, Tipton, where she was the president of her Sunday school class. She retired from Weber Shoe Company in 1988 and then worked at Tilton Nursing Home, California. A lifelong resident of the Tipton area, she was treasurer of the Senior Citizens group.

Survivors include: two sons, Billy Johnson,  Jefferson City, and Danny Johnson, Russellville, Ky.; two daughters, Carol Blank Hunt, Waldron, Ark., and Connie Shehorn, California; one sister, Lida Ruth Cox, Latham; 10 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at First Baptist Church, Tipton. Frank Whitney and L.P. Cook III will officiate. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery, Latham.

Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. today at Meisenheimer-Griswold Funeral Home, Tipton.

Memorials are suggested to Tipton Nutrition Center.

THEISSEN

Sr. Clara Theissen, 85, FSM, died March 21, 2002, at St. Mary of the Angels Convent, Richmond Heights.

She was born May 25, 1916, in Rhineland, a daughter of Albert R. and Caroline M. Hagedorn Theissen.

She joined the Franciscan Sisters of Mary in 1954 and professed her final vows in 1962. She earned her nursing certificate from St. Mary's Hospital School of Nursing, St. Louis, in 1937; her bachelor's degree in nursing from St. Louis University, St. Louis, in 1963; and a pastoral associate certificate from the U.S. Catholic Conference and a chaplain certificate from the NACC/USCC in 1991.

She worked in private duty nursing in the St. Louis area and then at a doctor's clinic in Norwalk, Calif. She worked at St. Mary's Health Center, St. Louis, from 1954 to 1961 and at St. Mary on the Mount, St. Louis. She was an associate director of St. Mary's School of Nursing in Kansas City. She was a pastoral associate at Villa Marie Skilled Nursing Facility,  Jefferson City, from 1985 until her retirement in 1997.

Survivors include one sister, Jeanette Landolt, Hermann, and one brother, Raymond Theissen, Hermann.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Mary of the Angels Convent, Richmond Heights, and at 10 a.m. April 6 at Church of the Risen Savior, Rhineland. The remains were donated to science.

Memorials are suggested to the Franciscan Sisters of Mary Tribute Fund, 1100 Bellevue Avenue, St. Louis, Mo. 63117.
