TUCKER
Clay Tucker, 101, Excelsior Springs, died Sept. 26, 2002, in Liberty.
He was born Aug. 22, 1901, in Big Piney, a son of Marion "Buck" and Dora Estes Tucker. He was married April 19, 1922, in Olean, to Emma M. Thompson Tucker, who died July 2, 1973.
He lived in the Tuscumbia community for most of his life. He worked for Anchor Milling Company for many years until his retirement in 1965. He moved to Excelsior Springs in 1992. He was a member of the Saline Valley Church of Christ.
Survivors include: seven sons, Tom Tucker, Kansas City, Kan., Hershel Tucker, Columbia, Dan Tucker, Gene Tucker, and Paul Tucker, all of Eldon, Dale Tucker, Liberty, and Bob Tucker, Mexico; two daughters, Mary Hendley, Excelsior Springs, and Helen Kobenowski, Independence; 23 grandchildren, 48 great-grandchildren and eight great-great-grandchildren.
One son, Henry Tucker, and one grandson preceded him in death.
Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Monday at Phillips Funeral Home, Eldon. The Rev. Murl Nash will officiate. Burial will be in Tuscumbia Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 6-8:30 p.m. Sunday.
Memorials are suggested to Hospice Hospital of Excelsior Springs or Church of Christ of Saline Valley.
BENSON
Lucille Lela Benson, 96, Jefferson City, died Sept. 26, 2002, at St. Joseph Home for the Aged.
She was born Sept. 16, 1906, in Boaz, a daughter of James R. and Suvilla Martha Johnson Swadley. She was married to Robert Benson of Columbia.
She worked as a secretary for the Missouri Highway Department before moving to Pasadena, Calif. She worked for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, retiring as an executive secretary.
Survivors include: one sister, Ruth Bunch, Hazelwood.
Private family services will be at St. Joseph Home for the Aged Chapel.
Memorials are suggested to St. Joseph Home for the Aged.
GRAVES
Gilbert A. Graves, 72, Linn, died Sept. 28, 2002, at his home.
He was born April 24, 1930, in Des Moines, Iowa, a son of Arthur and Esther V. Wenner Graves. He was married April 2, 1950, in Quartzite, Ariz., to Beverly E. White , who survives at the home.
He was a Navy veteran of the Korean War. He worked as a maintenance electrician with Hughes Aircraft until his retirement in 1985.
He was a member of the Masonic Lodge, Newport Beach, Calif., the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 2295, Los Angeles and was president of the Hughes Aircraft Employees Association. He also served as a Scoutmaster for the Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts of America.
Other survivors include: two sons, Don A. Graves, Huntington Beach, Calif., and James W. Graves, Napa, Calif.; one daughter, Karen L. Graves, Linn; two brothers, Billie A. Graves, El Paso, Texas , and Richard A. Graves, Des Moines; two sisters, Shirley L. Graham, Mercer, and Virginia V. Murphy, Des Moines; 10 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 4 p.m. Monday at the Morton Funeral Chapel, Linn. The Rev. Mike Johnson will officiate.
Visitation will be from 3-4 p.m. at the funeral home.
Memorials are suggested to the American Lung Association.
HAMMEN
Marjory L. Hammen, 78, Fulton, died Sept. 27, 2002, at University of Missouri-Columbia Hospital.
She was born June 21, 1924, a daughter of Hubert and Malcena Davis Muzzy. She was married in 1942 to Thomas E. Hammen, who died in 1998.
She was a graduate of Fulton High School. She was director of the Callaway County Red Cross and coordinator for SERVE. She was a member of the Richland Baptist Church.
Survivors include: one son Brad Hammen, Fulton; two daughters Cathy Haymart, Fulton, and Teri Bailey, High Point; one brother, Tommy Muzzy, Dinuba, Calif.; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at the Richland Baptist Church. Pastor Larry Paris will officiate. Burial will be in the Richland Baptist Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. today at the Maupin Funeral Home, Fulton and from 1 p.m. until the service at the church.
Memorials are suggested to the American Cancer Society, the American Diabetes Association, Eye Research Foundation, or Richland Baptist Church.
ILLSTON
Janet K. Illston, 64, Jefferson City, died Sept. 26, 2002, at St. Marys Health Center, Jefferson City.
She was born Aug. 11, 1938, in Walnut Grove, a daughter of Robert and Doris Wright Killingsworth. She was married Aug. 14, 1965, in Cave Springs, to Walter R. Illston, who survives at the home.
She was a graduate of Walnut Grove High School, Southwest Missouri State University, Springfield and University of Missouri-Columbia. She was a teacher at Hickman Hills High School, Kansas City, Simonsen Middle School and Jefferson Junior High School, both in Jefferson City, before she retired in 1992.
She was treasurer and president of the Bittersweet Garden Club, central district legislative chairman and second district director of the Federated Garden Club, member of First Presbyterian Church and secretary of the church's women's group. She was also a graduate of Central Missouri Master Gardeners, where she taught master classes and was a flower judge at the Missouri State Fair.
Survivors include: one son, Robert H. Illston, Jefferson City; one brother, Carl Killingsworth, Walnut Grove; and one sister, Jane Mitchell, Springfield.
Services will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Freeman Mortuary Chapel, Jefferson City. The Rev. David Henry will officiate.
Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
Memorials are suggested to the Bittersweet Garden Club.
JOHNSON
Kathleen Marie Johnson, 41, Syracuse, died Sept. 28, 2002, at her home.
She was born March 15, 1961, in Sedalia, a daughter of Raymond and Blanche Laird Simons. She was married Oct. 7, 1991, in Las Vegas, to Richard R. Johnson, who survives at the home.
She attended Whittier and Washington grade schools in Sedalia. She graduated from Warsaw High School in 1979. She was employed at Warsaw Clinic before moving to Sedalia. She graduated from State Fair Community College in 1985 with an Associate of Science Degree, followed by an Associate Degree in Accounting in 1987. She worked at Community Bank in Sedalia, Pettis County Title and Abstract, Missouri Land Brokers and Landman Title Co. She served as Syracuse city clerk, secretary of the Syracuse Cemetery Board and secretary of Morgan County Enterprise Zone and Committee. She and her husband owned and operated Syracuse Implement Co., where she was an office manager. She was a dealer for Vermeer, Belarus, Sidewinder, Krone and other short lines of farm and implement equipment. She was a member of United Methodist Church of Warsaw.
Other survivors include: her mother, Blanche Simons, Warsaw; one step-son, Staff Sgt. Jeff Johnson, Ft. Carson, Colo.; one step-daughter, Jody Bestgen, Lemoore, Calif.; two brothers, Stuart and Eddie Simons, both of Warsaw; one sister, Patty Kinkead, Warsaw; and five step-grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Syracuse Baptist Church, Syracuse. The Rev. Harold Nicks will officiate. Burial will be in Syracuse Cemetery.
Visitation will be 5-8 p.m. Monday at Meisenheimer-Griswold Funeral Home, Tipton.
Memorials are suggested to Syracuse Cemetery or the Kathy Johnson Scholarship Fund.
LYNN
Karen L. Lynn, 50, Ashland, died Sept. 28, 2002, at Ashland Healthcare.
She was born Sept. 7, 1952, in Columbia, a daughter of Harold and Joanna Grant Nichols, who survive in Brookline Station. She was married to David Lee and later married to David Lynn.
She was a 1971 graduate of Hickman High School, Columbia. She worked as an assistant manager and driver for Ryder Bus.
Other survivors include: one son, Donnie Lee, Ashland; one daughter, Sarah Lynn, Columbia; one brother, Charles Nichols, Escondido, Calif.; one sister, Alice Ramey, Brookline Station; and three grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Robinson Funeral Home, Ashland. Pastor Fred Martie will officiate. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, Columbia.
Visitation will be 10-11 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
Memorials are suggested to the American Cancer Society.
PICKETT
Gladys Pickett, 81, Jefferson City, died Sept. 25, 2002, in Jefferson City.
She was born Feb. 6, 1921, in Des Moines, Iowa, a daughter of Pearl Milton Bennett and Ida M. Speck.
She was a machine operator for Rice Coat & Suit Company, a garment manufacturing company, in Kansas City, for many years prior to her retirement.
She moved to Eldon in 1942, then moved to Kansas City from 1953-1971, when she returned to Eldon.
She was preceded in death by one infant daughter, Ida Lee.
Services will be at 4 p.m. Monday at Dooley Cemetery in Eldon. The Rev. Ernie Buscher will officiate. Burial will be in Dooley Cemetery.
Visitation will be at 3 p.m. Monday at Phillips Funeral Home in Eldon.
