SMELSER
John Smelser, 85, Sunrise Beach, died Nov. 24, 2002, at Lake Regional Health System, Osage Beach.
He was born May 17, 1917, near Race Track, Mont., a son of Esty and Ernestine Davey Smelser. He was married June 20, 1940, in Hammond, Ind., to Dollie McCay, who survives at the home.
He was raised in Independence. He graduated from high school in Whiting, Ind., and attended Graceland College, Lamonie, Iowa. He lived in Hammond, Ind., and worked as a welder for more than 40 years for Inland Steel, Sheffield Steel, Standard Oil Company and Western Electric. He retired in 1979 and moved to the Lake area.
He was a member of the Community of Christ in Camdenton, and was ordained as a priest in his church in 1947. He was an elder, high priest and evangelist patriarch. In 1996 he was superannuated, maintaining the office of evangelist, but not holding administrative duties.
Other survivors include: three sons, Tom Smelser, Oxford, Mich., Edward Smelser, San Diego, and Jack Smelser, Wellington, Kan.; one daughter, Patricia Harvey, Lenexa, Kan.; 10 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
One grandson preceded him in death.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Community of Christ. The Rev. Jack George will officiate. Burial will be in Mound Grove Cemetery, Independence.
Memorials are suggested to the Outreach International Fund or the Parkinson's Foundation.
Arrangements are under the direction of Allee-Holman-Howe Funeral Home, Camdenton.
GILMAN
Betty Gilman, 78, Fulton, died Nov. 27, 2002.
She was born July 15, 1924, in Bentonville, Ark., a daughter of Allen R. and Edna Louis Potts Dews. She was married April 28, 1951 to Ralph Mottaz Gilman, who died Feb. 5, 1981.
She worked at Tom's Cleaners, Fulton and retired from Fulton State Hospital. She was a member of Southside Baptist Church, Fulton. She volunteered with the Callaway County Historical Society and delivered meals on wheels.
Survivors include: one son, Steve Gilman, Springfield; one daughter, Marsha Mitchell, Columbia; and three grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by one son, Larry R. Gilman, and one grandchild.
Services will be at 2:30 p.m. Sunday at Maupin Funeral Home, Fulton. The Rev. Ron Baker will officiate. Burial will be in Auxvasse Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 12:30-2:30 p.m. Sunday.
Memorials are suggested to the American Cancer Society, the Callaway County Historical Society or a charity of the donor's choice.
HARTLEY
Raymond Eugene Hartley, 22, Holts Summit, died Nov. 28, 2002, from injuries sustained in an automobile accident.
He was born Oct. 21, 1980, in Jefferson City, a son of Kenneth E. and Linda M. Shoults Hartley, who survive in St. Martins. He was married Nov. 17, 2000, in Jefferson City, to Rachel Withers, who survives at the home.
He was a graduate of Jefferson City High School and worked as a truck driver at FAB Building Center.
Other survivors include: one son, Derrick Eugene Hartley, of the home; one brother, Roger E. Hartley, Centertown; two sisters, Robin M. Hartley, Jefferson City and Renee L. Willis, Eldon; paternal grandmother, Ruth M. Hartley, Jefferson City; and maternal grandmother, Alice Shoults, Jefferson City.
Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Monday at Houser-Millard Funeral Directors, Jefferson City. The Rev. Ed Schmidt will officiate. Burial will be in Hawthorn Memorial Gardens.
Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Sunday.
Memorials are suggested to the Derrick Hartley Education Fund.
PORTER
James L. "Lee" Porter, 94, Henley, died Nov. 28, 2002, at Jefferson City Manor Care Center.
He was born Oct. 6, 1908, in Birchtree, a son of George W. and Caldonia Robbins Porter. He was married June 26, 1937, in Jefferson City, to Pearl M. Belt, who died Jan. 15, 1994.
He worked on the construction of Bagnell Dam, Rock Island railroad and mines in the Henley area. He retired from the Missouri Highway Department after 25 years.
He was a member of the Hickory Hill Baptist Church.
Survivors include: five sons, Bob Porter, Jerry Porter and Johnnie Porter, all of Eugene, David Porter, Henley, and Ron Porter, Jefferson City; four daughters, Ruby Hart, Hermitage, Wilma Kliethermes and Brenda Miller, both of Eugene, and Anna Watts, Henley; one brother, Gene Porter, Independence; 33 grandchildren; and 61 great-grandchildren.
One son, James F. Porter, two grandchildren and one great-grandson preceded him in death.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Sunday at Hickory Hill Baptist Church. The Rev. Chellis Crum will officiate. Burial will be in Hickory Hill Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Saturday at Scrivner-Morrow Funeral Home, Russellville.
Memorials are suggested to the Hospice of Jefferson City.
RIVERA
Marjorie Helen Rivera, 73, Fulton, died Nov. 26, 2002, at her home.
She was born July 1, 1929, in Missouri, a daughter of William H. and Ora Belle Sevier Travis. She was married in Phoenix, Ariz., to Manuel Rivera, who died Nov. 14, 2002.
She was a nurse's aid at St. Luke's Hospital in Phoenix before moving to Fulton. She was a homemaker.
Survivors include: two sons, George Taggart and Doug Rivera, both of the state of Missouri; six daughters, Faith Taggart, Columbia, Donna DeValle and Connie Rivera, both of Fulton, Georgia Capal, Williamsburg, Marjorie Ashford, Vandalia, and Lori Mounsey, state of Missouri; and 18 grandchildren.
One grandchild preceded her in death.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Debo Funeral Home, Fulton. The Rev. Ted Harrison will officiate. Burial will be in Hillcrest Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Tuesday.
WATSON
David Lee Watson, 23, Holts Summit, died Nov. 28, 2002, from injuries sustained in an automobile accident.
He was born July 8, 1979, in Jefferson City, a son of David F. and Vicki L. Gilpin Watson. His father survives in Bolivar. His mother and stepfather, Vicki and Danny Landers, survive in Holts Summit.
He attended Jefferson City High School. He had worked at Scholastic, Inc., the Jefferson City Correctional Center and FAB Building Center.
Other survivors include: one sister, Becca Watson, Jefferson City; paternal grandmother, Louise D. Watson, Bolivar; and step grandparents, Art and Clara Mae Landers, Jefferson City.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Houser-Millard Funeral Directors, Jefferson City. The Rev. Joseph Skiles will officiate. Burial will be in in Hawthorn Memorial Gardens.
Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Sunday.
Memorials are suggested to the Katlyn Staehle Educational Fund.
DORITY
Edward Eugene "Gene" Dority, 70, Stover, died Nov. 28, 2002, at the Golden Age Living Center, Stover.
He was born Aug. 27, 1932, in Camden County, a son of Earl E. and Ruby Ellen Finley Dority. He was married April 4, 1957, in Moberly, to Shirley A. Munsterman, who survives at the home.
He attended Stover High School and was an Army veteran of the Korean War.
He worked as a machine operator with the Morgan County Road District and served on the Stover Fire Department. He was a member of the First Baptist Church, Stover.
Other survivors include: one son, Philip Dority, Versailles; one daughter, Teresa Matherly, Kenney, Ill.; two brothers, Harvey Dority, Turon, Kan., and Howard Dority, California; three sisters, Rose Carter, California, Bonnie Smith, Smithton, and Annie Brown, Prairie Home; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at First Baptist Church, Stover. The Rev. Dinzel Webb will officiate. Burial with military honors will be in Stover Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 3-5 p.m. Sunday at Scrivner-Morrow Funeral Home, Stover.
Memorials are suggested to First Baptist Church, Stover, or Golden Age Living Center, Stover.
ELLIS
Galen M. Ellis, 49, Henley, died Nov. 13, 2002.
He was a former electrician for Armco Steel and BPU of Kansas. He most recently forked for Square D in Columbia.
Survivors include: one daughter, Amy Huffman, Grain Valley; one son, Adam Ellis, Boise, Idaho; three sisters, Jana Brugman, Blue Springs, Lynette Gibbs, Greenwood, and Anita Cola, Blue Springs; and two grandchildren.
No services are planned.

MILLER
Joyce I. Miller, 76, Eldon, died Nov. 28, 2002, in Jefferson City.
She was born July 13, 1926, in Duquoin, Ill., a daughter of George and Marie Wilson Hill. She was married Sept. 1, 1951, in Belleville, Ill., to Robert Miller, who survives at the home.
She was a homemaker.
Other survivors include: three daughters, JoAnne McKeag, Ottumwa, Iowa, Laura Stark, Eldon, and Gail McAlpin, Fort Worth, Texas ; four sons, Paul Gilbert, Belleville, Russell Miller, of the home, David Miller, Lake Ozark, and Melvin Miller, Eldon; one brother, Donald Hill, Belleville; 12 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Phillips Funeral Home, Eldon. The Rev. Cellis Crum will officiate. Burial will be in Eldon City Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Sunday.
Memorials are suggested to the American Heart Association.
WIEBERG
Services were Friday for Andrew Herman Wieberg, 84, Duncombe, Iowa, who died Nov. 9, 2002, in Oregon, Ill.
He was born July 19, 1918, in Koeltztown, a son of Herman and Catherine Boeckman Wieberg. He was married May 25, 1941, to Dorothy Porter, who survives in Oregon, Ill.
An Army veteran of World War II, he farmed near Duncombe. He was a master welder with Standard Engineering and Bush Hog, Fort Dodge, Iowa.
He was a member of American Legion Post 130. He was also a member of Corpus Christi Church, Fort Dodge, and St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Duncombe.
Other survivors include: two daughters, Doris Weindel, West Des Moines, Iowa, and Rosetta Jane Miller, Oregon, Ill.; one sister, Arharta Libbert, Meta; 14 grandchildren and 29 great-grandchildren.
Two great-grandchildren preceded him in death.
Services were at Corpus Christi Church, Des Moines. The Rev. Dale Reiff officiated. Cremation followed. Private family services will be at a later date at North Lawn Cemetery.
