CHRONISTER
Pauline "Gert" Chronister, 76, Jefferson City, died Dec. 3, 2002, at Jefferson City Manor Nursing Center.
She was born Nov. 1, 1926, in Ellington, a daughter of Clardy and Lucille Voyles Tinker. She was married Nov. 12, 1944, in Waukegan, Ill., to Darrell L. Chronister, who survives.
She graduated from Ellington High School and from Nichols Career Center as a licensed practical nurse. A resident of the Jefferson City area from 1944-1977, she was a nurse at St. Marys Health Center for several years. She worked at Reynolds County Memorial Hospital until her retirement in 1990. She was a member of the United Methodist Church, Ellington, and the American Legion Roscoe Enloe Post 5 Auxiliary, Jefferson City.
Other survivors include: one son, Darrell Tinker Chronister, Jefferson City; three brothers, Willard Tinker, St. Louis, Lewin Tinker, state of Missouri, and Ben Tinker, state of California; one sister, Linda Tinker, St. Louis; five grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
One daughter, Gaila Lager, died Sept. 23, 1999.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at McSpadden Funeral Home, Ellington. Burial will be in Ellington City Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. Friday at McSpadden Funeral Home.
Memorials are suggested to the American Lung Association or the United Methodist Church, Ellington.
Local arrangements are under the direction of Freeman Mortuary.
FISCHER
Nadine Fischer, 83, Lohman, died Dec. 2, 2002, at St. Marys Health Center.
Arrangements are at Weber & Sons Funeral Home, Russellville.
GUTZ
Arthur William Gutz, 50, Jefferson City, died Dec. 2, 2002, at his home.

BACKES
Annie J. Backes, 97, Linn, died Dec. 3, 2002, at St. Marys Health Center.
She was born March 1, 1905, in Osage County, a daughter of John G. and Nellie Haslag Kremer. She was married Sept. 9, 1924, in Frankenstein, to Ferdinand J. Backes, who died Oct. 29, 1989.
A lifelong area resident, she attended St. Mary's School, Frankenstein. She was a homemaker and a member of Our Lady of Help Church, Frankenstein, St. Ann's Sodality and the Osage County Extension Club.
Survivors include: five daughters, Jo Dudenhoeffer and Rita Bonnot, both of Jefferson City, Florence Dudenhoeffer, Linn, Bernadine Schulte, Marys Home, and Nelda Keilholz, Danville, Fla.; five sisters, Pauline Thoenen, Gertrude Broker and Martha Backes, all of Frankenstein, Betty Brandt, Linn, and Josephine Roettgen, Jefferson City; 31 grandchildren; 83 great-grandchildren; and 21 great great-grandchildren.
One daughter, Mary Agnes Backes, one grandson and one great-grandson, preceded her in death.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Our Lady of Help Church, Frankenstein. The Rev. Daniel I.J. Lueckenotte will officiate. Burial will be in Garden of Gethsemane Cemetery, Frankenstein.
Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Friday, with a prayer service at 8 p.m., at Morton Funeral Home, Linn.
Memorials are suggested to St. Mary's School, Frankenstein, or a charity of the donor's choice.
FRENCH
Wallace C. French, 82, Gravois, died Dec. 5, 2002, at Laurie Care Center.
Arrangements are at Kidwell-Garber Funeral Home, Laurie.
HOLLAND
Jerry Albert Holland, 58, Holts Summit, died Dec. 3, 2002, at Capital Region Medical Center.
He was born May 13, 1944, in Washington , a son of Guy and Fern Ferguson Holland. He was married Aug. 10, 1966, in New Haven, to Gertie Watson, who survives at the home.
He was a self-employed logger and a member of the Pleasant Ridge Baptist Church, Holts Summit.
He was a Marine Corps veteran of the Vietnam War.
Other survivors include: one son, Craig Holland, Holts Summit; one daughter, Sandy Bampton, O'Fallon; and five grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Pleasant Ridge Baptist Church. The Rev. Craig Burcham will officiate. Burial will be in Bull Cemetery, Holts Summit.
Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. today at Debo Funeral Home, Holts Summit.
Memorials are suggested to Bull Cemetery.
KIRCHOFF
Jean R. Kirchoff, 69, Las Vegas, formerly of California, died Dec. 3, 2002, at California Care Center.
He was born May 20, 1933, in McGirk, a son of Jesse H. and Grace Gertrude Walter Kirchoff.
He was a 1951 graduate of California High School and earned a bachelor's degree in business in 1960 from the University of Missouri.
An Army veteran of the Korean War, he worked in the Pentagon. He retired as a railroad clerk in billing with the Santa Fe Railroad. He was a part-time movie actor in Las Vegas.
He was a member of Salem United Church of Christ, southeast of California.
Survivors include: three brothers, Roger Kirchoff and Ronald Kirchoff, both of California, and Gail Kirchoff, Frankfort, Mich.; and one sister, Judy Gibler, California.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Salem United Church of Christ. The Rev. Gary Schulte and the Rev. Collette Jones will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Friday at Bowlin-Cantriel Funeral Services, California.
Memorials are suggested to a charity of the donor's choice.
TASS
Evelyn Tass, 75, Lake Ozark, died Dec. 4, 2002, at Boone Hospital Center, Columbia.
She was born Oct. 14, 1927, in Lebanon, a daughter of Alvin and Elise Young. She was married in 1970 to William Tass, who survives at the home.
She was an inspector for General Motors, baby-sat at Osage Hills Baptist Church and was a member of the Gideon Auxiliary. She was a Baptist.
Other survivors include: three stepsons, William Tass, Panama City, Fla., Berry Tass, Norfolk, Va., and Kirk Tass, St. Louis; two stepdaughters, Roberta Tass, Norfolk, and Sherry Robinson, St. Louis; one brother, Richard Young, Orlando, Fla.; two sisters, Rosie Young, state of Georgia, and Edna Bohannon, Lebanon; and six grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Horseshoe Bend Baptist Church. The Rev. Herb Baker will officiate. Burial will be in Lake Memorial Garden Cemetery, Osage Beach.
Visitation will be from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday.
Arrangements are under the direction of Hedges Funeral Home, Osage Beach.
THOMAS
William L. Thomas, 77, Fulton, died Dec. 4, 2002, at his home.
He was born March 16, 1925, in Tebbetts, a son of William M. and Laura Brandis Thomas. He was married Oct. 18, 1947, to Betty Edson, who survives at the home.
He worked as a lineman and in management for Southwestern Bell. He was a member of Central Christian Church and a former member of Dixie Christian Church. He was a life member of VFW Post 2657 and a member of the Muddy Missouri Division. He was a former councilman in Fulton and a former member of the Eagles Lodge.
Other survivors include: two sons, Roger Thomas, Columbia, and Richard Thomas, Eldon; three brothers, Doyle Thomas and Carl Thomas, both of Fulton, and Robert Thomas, Moberly; two sisters, Jeanne Epperson, Fulton, and Wanda Gaunt, Macon; and four grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Maupin Funeral Home, Fulton. Pastor Bill Nigus will officiate. Burial will be in Callaway Memorial Gardens.
Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. today.
