PARTON

Elmer Franklin Parton Jr., 80, Columbia, died Dec. 25, 2002, at Columbia Health Care.

He was born Jan. 29, 1922, in Rock Springs, Wyo., a son of Elmer F. Sr., and Rose Orlena Cadwell Parton. He was married to Maybelle Trollinger, who survives.

He attended the University of Missouri. He worked as a police officer for the City of Columbia and later was self-employed, until his retirement in 1994.

He was a member of Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, where he was an elder. He was an Army Air Corps veteran of World War II.

Other survivors include: one son, Gene F. Parton,  Jefferson City; one daughter, Brenda Parton, Columbia; one stepdaughter, Donna Kinder, Columbia; one brother, Robert Parton, Rock Springs, Wyo.; one sister, Vivian Lane, Cheyenne, Wyo.; three grandchildren; one adopted grandson; and four step grandchildren.

One stepson, Ron L. Parton, and one step granddaughter, preceded him in death.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Columbia. Bishop Richard Houseman will officiate.

Memorials are suggested to the Alzheimer's Association, 1121 Bus. Loop 70 E, Columbia, Mo. 65201.

ROOTES

Betty L. Rootes, 80,  Jefferson City, died Jan. 1, 2003.

She was born July 23, 1922, in Columbia, a daughter of Carl L. and Leona Conklin Van Horne. She was married in 1947, in  Jefferson City, to William A. Rootes, who died in 1949.

She graduated from  Jefferson City High School and William Woods College. She worked for Central Trust Bank for 42 years. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, the Daughters of the American Revolution and the PEO.

She was active in various civic and charitable organizations and received the John Hobbs Civic Award for her contributions to these organizations.

Survivors include one son, Bill L. Rootes,  Jefferson City, and one granddaughter.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Houser-Millard Funeral Directors. Burial will be in Riverview Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4-6 p.m. Friday.

Memorials are suggested to the Easter Seals Society.

SPINK

Services were today for Della J. Spink, 70, Versailles, who died Jan. 1, 2003, at Good Shepherd Care Center, Versailles.

She was born May 25, 1932, in Russellville, a daughter of Ray E. and Erma Klindt Jones.

She had lived in Russellville.

Survivors include: three sons, Tim Lawrence, Thompson, Randall Eikel, Pikeville, Tenn., and Mike Eikel, LaGrange, Ga.; one daughter, Tammie Baker, LaGrange; one brother, Earl Jones; two sisters, Wilma Righter and Juanita Cameron; nine grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Graveside services were in Enloe Cemetery, Russellville. The Rev. Alan Earls officiated.

Arrangements were under the direction of Kidwell-Garber Funeral Home, Versailles.

SPURGEON

Burgess Uriah Spurgeon, 66, Dixon, died Jan. 1, 2003, at his home.

He was born Jan. 25, 1936, in Wappapello, a son of John and Nellie Duke Spurgeon. He was married Jan. 16, 1953, in Vancouver, Wash., to Elsie Marie Kimbell, who survives.

He was a retired Army veteran.

Other survivors include: three sons, Randall Spurgeon, Clarksville, Tenn., Calvin Spurgeon, Simpsonville, S.C., and Bob Spurgeon, Dixon; six daughters, Tresa Mats, Shelton, Wash., Dawn Wagoner, Dorania LeBron and Millie Hardwick, all of Dixon, Audrey Gray, Greenville, S.C., and Beverly Morris,  Jefferson City; two sisters, Dorania Erickson, Lebanon, Ore., and LuRetta Rollins, Springville, Tenn.; 27 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

One infant son, Samuel Spurgeon, preceded him in death.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Long-Gilbert Funeral Home, Dixon. Edmond Davis Jr. will officiate. Burial will be in Kenner Cemetery near Dixon.

Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. Saturday and from 1-2 p.m. Sunday.

Memorials are suggested to the family.

WENGER

Glendola Alta Bentch Wenger, 78, Versailles, died Jan. 2, 2003, at Capital Region Medical Center.

She was born March 8, 1924, in Sagrada, a daughter of George E. and Minnie Opal McDavitt Bentch. She was married Sept. 19, 1948, to L. Roy Wenger, who survives.

She graduated from Climax Springs High School. She was a member of Cornerstone Church of Versailles and Gideons International Auxiliary.

Other survivors include: two sons, Philip Wenger, Versailles, and Frederick Wenger,  Jefferson City; seven daughters, Delores Miller and Janice Miller, both of Versailles, Charlene Yoder, Wolford, N.D., Darlene Reimer and Marilyn Stevens, both of Omaha, Neb., Judith Redcay,  Jefferson City, and Vivian Good, Murphy, Ind.; two brothers, Don Bentch, Versailles, and Clarence Bentch,  Jefferson City; two sisters, Lela Wenger, Hesston, Kan., and Eunice Lehman, Versailles; 27 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and one step grandchild.

One infant daughter and one infant great-granddaughter preceded her in death.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Cornerstone Church of Versailles. Pastor Dale Bentch and the Rev. Tom Voth will officiate. Burial will be in Mt. Zion Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 7-9 p.m. today at Kidwell-Garber Funeral Home, Versailles.

Memorials are suggested to Cornerstone Church or Gideons Auxiliary.

WILHARM

Services were Tuesday for Willis E. Wilharm, 93,  Jefferson City, who died Dec. 29, 2002, at Oak Tree Villas.

He was born July 29, 1909, in Edwardsville, Ill., a son of Reinhardt C. and Johanna Wiemers Wilharm. He was married June 16, 1935, to Loretta Blume, who died Nov. 22, 1985.

He was a 1928 graduate of Edwardsville High School. He was a clerk for Illinois Terminal Rail Road in St. Louis, retiring in 1974. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Edwardsville. He was a member of the Tuesday/Thursday Bowling League in Edwardsville.

Survivors include: two daughters, Judith Evans,  Jefferson City, and Jane McCormick, Xenia, Ill.; and three grandchildren.

Services were at Weber Funeral Home, Edwardsville. The Rev. Gary Galen officiated. Burial was in Forever Valley View, Edwardsville.

Memorials are suggested to Trinity Lutheran Church or KFUO Lutheran Hour.

THOMPSON

Mildred Martha Thompson, 74, Columbia, died Dec. 29, 2002.

She was born Sept. 13, 1928, a daughter of Melvin and Martha Wall. She was married Dec. 21, 1949, to Bill Thompson, who survives in Columbia.

She attended Proviso High School, Chicago. She graduated from the University of Illinois with a degree in home economics. She lived in Nouth Carolina, Delaware and Florida, moving to Columbia in 1968.

Other survivors include: three sons, Scott W. Thompson,  Jefferson City, Bruce W. Thompson, Baltimore, Md., and Gary W. Thompson, Denver; one daughter, Barbara J. Morris, Camdenton; and nine grandchildren.

Services will be at 5 p.m. Thursday at Parker Funeral Home, Columbia.

Visitation will be from 4-5 p.m. Thursday.

WYRICK

Gail Wyrick, 76, Tuscumbia, died Jan. 3, 2003, in Columbia.

He was born Feb. 16, 1926, in Tuscumbia, a son of James A. and Sarah Jane "Sadie" Vanatta Wyrick. He was married May 17, 1947, in Eldon, to Doris Wright, who survives at the home.

He worked in sales and delivery for Old Anchor Mill in Tuscumbia and Eugene. He was a manager and salesman at MFA Exchange. A longtime member of First Baptist Church of Tuscumbia, he was also a member of the Miller County Bluegrass Association. He played music in area nursing homes and coached youth baseball and softball.

Other survivors include: one son, Larry Wyrick, Tuscumbia; one daughter, Linda Shepherd, Dade City, Fla.; one brother, Earl Wyrick, Modesto, Calif.; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at First Baptist Church of Tuscumbia. The Rev. Don Bilbary Sr., the Rev. Bob Stevenson, the Rev. Don Bilbary Jr. and the Rev. Gene Edwards will officiate. Burial will be in Mt. Zion Cemetery, Tuscumbia.

Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Sunday at Phillips Funeral Home, Eldon.

Memorials are suggested to First Baptist Church of Tuscumbia or to the American Diabetes Association.
