OTHERS ABOUT HIS LORD AND SAVIOR, JESUS CHRIST. HE HAD A DEEP LOVE FOR HIS FAMILY AND FRIENDS AND WAS ALWAYS READY TO
PRAY WITH THEM IN ANY SITUATION. HE WAS A TRUE EXAMPLE OF COMPASSION,
GRACE, AND FAITHFULNESS WITH A TREMENDOUS CAPACITY TO ACCEPT EVERYONE FROM

Mr. Herman Grove Smith, age 88 years, of  Jefferson City, Mo., died Wednesday, October 6, 2010 at his home.
Herman was born February 18, 1922 in Richmond, Mo. the son of Henry Parris and Lelia Seward Smith. He was married on September 30, 1968 in  Jefferson City, Mo. to Marjorie Adams.
He graduated from Richmond High School in 1939 and enlisted for six years in the United States Navy on September 5, 1941. By the time Herman had finished boot camp and electrical school in Great Lakes, the war had started. Herman volunteered for submarine duty, went to submarine school in New London and continued on to Mare Island to board the USS Stingray.
Herman made five patrols out of Pearl Harbor, spent two months in Relief Crew in Brisbane, Australia and he was then sent to a new construction aboard the USS Hardhead in Manitowoc, Wis. Herman made six patrols aboard the USS Hardhead from Fremantle, Australia and Subic Bay, Philippines Island.
On December 23, 1945, Herman was transferred to the USS Carbonero. He made two Asiatic tours prior to his discharge on September 7, 1947.
Herman returned to  Jefferson City and joined the Missouri Highway Dept. where he worked for thirty-seven years. He was party chief of the survey crew. Herman was a registered land surveyor.
He was a member of the First Baptist Church where he served as a Sunday school teacher for thirty years, was a deacon, coached softball, and loved to work with children and young people.
He was a Boy Scout Leader, served as president of the Jeff Junior P. T. A., was a life member of the U. S. Sub Vets of World War II and served as president of the Muddy Mo Squadron in Missouri.
Herman was a wonderful husband, a great dad, and a doting grandpa.
Survivors include: his wife of forty-three years, Marjorie; three sons, Robert Dwayne Smith, Daniel Smith, and David Smith; two daughters, Debra Enright and Donna Smith; one daughter-in-law, Rebecca French Smith; twelve grandchildren, Ronald Kent Smith, Phillip Kirk Smith, Robert Lance Smith, Sarah Jane Smith, Chris Smith, Lindsey Smith, Jacob Tremaine, William Smith, Brandon Smith, Joseph Tremaine, Hunter Smith, and Collin Smith; three great-grandchildren, Dalton, Carol Ann and Derrick; one brother, Wayne Smith of Richmond, Mo. ; and several nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be at Freeman Mortuary from 2:00 until 3:00 PM Saturday, October 9, 2010.
Funeral services will be conducted at 3:00 PM Saturday in the Freeman Chapel with the Reverend Dr. Doyle Sager officiating. Graveside services and interment with military honors will be conducted at Hawthorn Memorial Gardens.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to the American Cancer Society or the First Baptist Church.

Mr. Arvil G. Walker, Jr., age 85 years, of Versailles, Mo, a former  Jefferson City resident, died Friday, July 30, 2010 at the Good Shepherd Care Center, Versailles, Mo.
Arvil was born April 13, 1925 in Hermann, Mo., the son of Arvil G., Sr. and Lena C. Hans. He was married on March 20, 1945 in Sedalia, Mo. to Beulah L. Hutinger who preceded him in death on June 28, 1994. On August 26, 1995, in  Jefferson City, Mo., he married Evelyn L. Swain.
A lifelong resident of the Central Missouri area, Arvil attended Oak Grove school in Ashland, Mo.
He served in the United States Army during World War II.
Arvil was employed with several  Jefferson City car dealerships as a mechanic for many years. Later, he was a machinist at A. B. B. until his retirement in 1986.
He was an active member and deacon emeritus at the First Baptist Church of Versailles, the  Jefferson Lodge No. 43, A. F. & a.m., and the Order of the Eastern Star, Victoria Chapter No. 14.
Survivors include: his wife, Evelyn Walker of Versailles, Mo. ; three children, Clifford Walker and his wife Patty of  Jefferson City, Mo., Dorothy Walker and her husband Gig Wheeler of Brownsville, Texas , and Brenda Schnieders and her husband Glenn of  Jefferson City, Mo. ; three step children, David Swain and his wife Theresa of Brownstown, Illinois, Carolyn Weems and her husband Jessie of Salem, Illinois, and Donna Ritchey and her husband Russ of Vandalia, Illinois; one brother, Henry R. Nichols and his wife Jeannie; two sisters, Ruby Carey of Berthoud, Colorado and Helen Quinn of Hartsburg, Mo. ; ten grandchildren, twenty-nine great grandchildren, two great great grandchildren, eleven step grandchildren and twenty-three step great grandchildren.
Visitation will be at Freeman Mortuary from 5:00 until 7:00 PM Tuesday with a Masonic Service and an Eastern Star Service to be conducted at 6:30 PM in the Freeman Chapel.
Funeral services will be conducted at 10:30 AM Wednesday, August 4, 2010 in the Freeman Chapel with the Reverend Dr. Todd Forman officiating. Graveside services and interment with military honors will be conducted at Hawthorn Memorial Gardens.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to the First Baptist Church of Versailles, the Order of the Eastern Star, Victoria Chapter No. 14, or the Preferred Hospice of Columbia, Mo.
Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Freeman Mortuary.

Mrs. Betty A. Braun, age 79 years, of  Jefferson City, Mo., died Thursday, August 5, 2010 at her home.
She was born August 28, 1930 in Valley Park, Mo. the daughter of Paul and Marie Wilbers Moeller. She was married on April 7, 1951 in Linn, Mo. to Richard H. Braun. A lifelong resident of the Central Missouri area, Betty attended Campground School and later St. George School in Linn, Mo.
A homemaker, Betty had also been employed with Cheseborough-Ponds for several years prior to her retirement in 1976.
She was a member of St. Margaret Catholic Church and the Ladies Sodality in Osage Bend, Mo.
Betty enjoyed quilting, crafts, camping, bird watching, tending her flowers and traveling. Most importantly, she enjoyed spending time with her family.
Survivors include: her husband, Richard Braun; seven children, Carol Bueche and her husband Bob of Tucson, Az., Linda Lewis and her husband Mike of  Jefferson City, Mo., Fred Braun and his wife Diane of  Jefferson City, Mo., Harry Braun of  Jefferson City, Mo., Kathleen “Kate” Lackman and her husband Darin of  Jefferson City, Mo., DeWayne Braun and his wife YuWanda of  Jefferson City, Mo. and James Braun and Kathy Cremer of  Jefferson City, Mo. ; two sisters, Gladys Fritchley and her husband Tom of Linn, Mo. and Freida Buchta and her husband Hugo of Russellville, Mo. ; one brother, Ronald Moeller and his wife Patti of Linn, Mo. ; eleven grandchildren, Chris Lewis and his wife Sherry, Bryan Braun and his wife Renee, Scott Lewis, Jessica Braun and her fiancé Cole Schaefer, Sarah Bueche, Brittani Cline and her fiancé Jeremy Davison, Brandon Cline, Zachary Cline, Shae Lackman, Clevon Watkins and Tai Hayes; and five great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; one son, Larry Paul Braun; and one brother, Albert Moeller.
Visitation will be at Freeman Mortuary from 4:00 until 7:00 PM Sunday with a prayer service to be conducted at 3:30 PM in the Freeman Chapel. Visitation will also be at St. Margaret Catholic Church from 9:00 until 10:00 AM Monday.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be conducted at 10:00 AM Monday, August 9, 2010 at St. Margaret Catholic Church in Osage Bend with the Reverend George Kramer officiating. Interment will follow at St. Margaret Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to the Ladies Sodality of St. Margaret Catholic Church.

Mrs. Lillian P. “Lillie” Hughes, age 103 years, of  Jefferson City, Mo., died Thursday, August 12, 2010 at the Villa Marie Nursing Center.
Lillie was born August 2, 1907 in Cedar City, Mo. the daughter of Jacob W. and Carrie Griffin Steinmetz. She was married on May 2, 1925 in Cedar City, Mo. to J. Virgil Hughes who preceded her in death on December 10, 1987. A life long resident of the  Jefferson City area, Lillie attended Cedar City School.
A homemaker, she had been employed with the Tweedie Footwear Factory for several years.
She was a member of the Shiloh United Methodist Church and the Auxiliary of the Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen.
Survivors include: one son, Norris Hughes of  Jefferson City, Mo. ; one daughter, Velma Shelnutt and her husband Bill of  Jefferson City, Mo. ; one daughter-in-law, Norma Hughes of  Jefferson City, Mo. ; ten grandchildren, twenty-five great grandchildren, eight great great grandchildren, six step great grandchildren, and two step great great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, one son, Richard “Dick” Hughes on July 8, 1998, and three sisters, Merle Bugbee, Mabel Cardwell, and Lottie Baker.
Visitation will be at Freeman Mortuary from 10:00 until 11:00 AM Saturday.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 AM Saturday, August 14, 2010 in the Freeman Chapel with the Reverend David Hartsfield officiating. Interment will be at Riverview Cemetery.

Micah J. Rooney, age 34 years, of  Jefferson City, MO., died Wednesday, April 15, 2010
Micah was born April 19, 1975 in Springfield, MO. the son of James L. and Debra M. Blackwell Rooney.
A life long resident of the central Missouri area, Micah attended  Jefferson City High School.
Micah was a member with the Missouri Army National Guard, Detachment 1, 548 Transportation Company and was currently a SP 4.
He enjoyed hunting, fishing, the outdoors, snow skiing, University of Missouri athletics, the St. Louis Cardinals, and the St. Louis Blues.
Survivors include: his parents, Jim and Debbie Rooney of Kaiser, MO; two sons, Jacob D. Rooney of  Jefferson City, MO. and Conner J. Rooney of  Jefferson City, MO. ; one daughter, Alexis R. Rooney of Kansas City, MO. ; one step daughter, Haley Dickneite of  Jefferson City, MO; his fiancee, Debbie Peneston of  Jefferson City, MO. ; several aunts and uncles, Lloyd and Joann Blackwell of Salem, MO., Gary and Jackie NuDelman of Payson, Arizona, Ellie and Lloyd Little of Dahinda, Illinois, John and Susan Rooney of St. Louis, MO., Mary Rauber of Richmond, MO., and Tommy and Dixie Rooney of Polo, MO.
He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Lloyd and Maxine Blackwell, his paternal grandparents, Patrick and Lila Rooney, and one uncle, Henry Rauber.
Funeral services will be conducted at 10:00 AM Tuesday, April 20, 2010 in the Freeman Chapel.
Visitation will be at Freeman Mortuary from 5:00 until 7:00 PM Monday.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to the Missouri Army National Guard Family Assistance Program.

Mr. Glen Wayne Heady, age 76 years, of  Jefferson City, MO., passed away peacefully, Monday, May 10, 2010 at the Capital Region Medical Center.
Wayne was born January 14, 1934 in Agency, Iowa the son of Glen D. and Anna Bernice Heady. He was married on July 4, 1956 in Agency, Iowa to Loretta Sue Fowler.
Wayne proudly served his country during the Korean Conflict in the United States Navy aboard the U. S. S. Helena.
He was a machinist at the Pantex Nuclear Weapons Plant in Amarillo, Texas for many years until his retirement in 1994 when he moved to the Lake of the Ozarks to enjoy his life long dream of fishing, boating, and spending time with his family. After retirement, he was also a bus driver for the Camdenton Public School District and has been a resident of  Jefferson City for the past six years.
Wayne enjoyed fishing, camping, and playing a steel guitar in country music bands.
Survivors: his loving wife of fifty-four years, Sue Heady; two sons, Neil Wayne Heady of Panhandle, Texas and Kevin Dean Heady and his wife Patty of Nixa, MO. ; two daughters, Pamela Sue Perry and her husband Steve of Panhandle, Texas and Sheila Marie Garrison and her husband Todd of Holts Summit, MO; one sister, Phyllis Scurlock of Keokuk, Iowa; thirteen grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Brad Lee Heady on August 15, 1959; two brothers; and three sisters
Visitation will be held at Freeman Mortuary from 2:00 until 4:00 PM Thursday.
A celebration of life will be conducted at 4:00 PM Thursday, May 13, 2010 in the Freeman Chapel with J. L. Fowler officiating and military honors to follow.

Mrs. Betty J. Keller, age 76 years, of  Jefferson City, MO., passed away Monday, May 10, 2010 at the Boone Hospital Center, Columbia, MO. Betty was born February 26, 1934 in Osage County, MO. the daughter of Joseph R. and Rose Mary Jaegers Gentges. She was married on May 7, 1955 in Frankenstein, MO. to James L. Keller who preceded her in death on October 6, 1998. A life long resident of the Central Missouri area, Betty was a 1952 graduate of Fatima High School, Westphalia, MO. She was employed as an account clerk with the Tweedie Footwear Factory from 1952 until 1957 and with the Missouri Division of Employment Security from 1957 until her retirement as a Data Entry Supervisor in March, 1997. Betty was a member of St. Peters Church; the Ladies Sodality; and the Sundowner’s Bowling League. She enjoyed the outdoors, trout fishing, crocheting, knitting, and spending time with her family. Survivors: one sister, Generose Dudenhoeffer and her husband George of Frankenstein, MO. ; three brothers, Dick Gentges of Loose Creek, MO., Jim Gentges of Frankenstein, MO. and Tom Gentges and his wife Sharon of Frankenstein, MO. ; her special friend, Bob Rickerson of  Jefferson City, MO. ; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; one sister and brother-in-law, Virginia and Bob Kirsch; and sister-in-law, Kay Gentges. Visitation will be at Freeman Mortuary from 4:00 until 7:00 PM Wednesday with a prayer service at 7:00 PM in the Freeman Chapel. A Mass of Christian Burial will be conducted at 10:00 AM Thursday, May 13, 2010 at St. Peter Church with the Reverend I. C. Medina officiating. Entombment will be in the mausoleum of Resurrection Cemetery. Ms. Linda K. Hill, age 57 years, of  Jefferson City, Mo. passed away Tuesday, May 11, 2010 at St. Mary’s Health Center. Ms. Hill was born on September 21, 1952 in  Jefferson City, Mo. the daughter of Edward “Chief” and Virginia Wadley Hill. A life long resident of the Central Missouri area, Linda attended  Jefferson City High School and was a majorette with the  Jefferson City Jay Band. She was employed with the Missouri Department of Revenue for several years until ill health forced her retirement. Linda was a member of the Chickasaw Nation and a granddaughter of original enrolle Lizzie Columbus Hill. She attended Old Paths Baptist Church for several years. Linda was always known as a caring person and mother to everyone. She loved having people to her home and looking after all her family and friends. Survivors include: one daughter, Jessica Jackson and her husband John of Holts Summit; three sisters, Betty Williams of Osage Beach, Mo., Laurie Hill of  Jefferson City, Mo., and Lisa Hill Durham and her husband Chris of  Jefferson City, Mo. ; three brothers, Edward “Chiefie” Hill of Columbia, Mo., James Hill and his wife Beth of  Jefferson City, Mo., and John Pat Hill of Lincoln, Nebraska; two grandchildren, Briana Jackson and Lucas Hill; and niece Lonni Humphrey along with numerous nieces and nephews. She was loved by all. Linda was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Kenny Opal; one brother, Mike Hill; one nephew, Dexter Rodden. Visitation will be held at Freeman Mortuary from 10:00 until 11:00 am Friday with a private Native American service to be held immediately before the visitation. Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 am Friday, May 14. 2010 in the Freeman Chapel with the Reverend Allen Golden officiating. Mr. Eugene D. “Gene” Brumley, III, of Rogersville, Mo., a former  Jefferson City resident, died Wednesday, May 12, 2010 at his home. Gene was born September 2, 1945 in  Jefferson City, Mo. the son of Eugene D., Jr. and Ernestine O. Brown Brumley. He was married on February 7, 1976 in  Jefferson City to Shirley A. Bruce, who survives in Rogersville, Mo. A lifelong resident of  Jefferson City, Gene was a 1963 graduate of  Jefferson City High School and attended Lincoln University. He served in the United States Army during the Vietnam Conflict and was stationed in Thailand as a heavy equipment operator. Gene was employed in the press room at the News Tribune with his father during college. After college he was employed as a surveyor with Cole County for several years and employed as a draftsman with the  Jefferson City Public Works Dept. for twenty-five years prior to his retirement in 2003. He was a member of the First Baptist Church and the American Legion, Roscoe Enloe Post 5. Survivors include: his loving wife of thirty-four years, Shirley Brumley; one daughter, Teresa A. Menolascino and her husband Frank of Rogersville, Mo; two grandchildren, Aaron Menolascino and Dominic Menolascino. He was preceded in death by his parents. Visitation will be at Freeman Mortuary from 11:00 until 1:00 PM Saturday. Funeral services will be conducted at 1:00 PM Saturday, May 15, 2010 in the Freeman Chapel with the Reverend Jeanie McGowan officiating. Graveside services and interment with military honors will be conducted at Hawthorn Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to the hospice of your choice. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Freeman Mortuary.

Mrs. Judith C. Good, age 71 years, of  Jefferson City, MO., died Wednesday, May 12, 2010 at St. Mary’s Health Center.
Judith was born December 12, 1938 in Lamar, MO., the daughter of T. Gordon and Bertha D. Johnson Williams. She was a 1956 graduate of Aurora High School, Aurora, MO. She also attended Metro Business College and Columbia College.
While a resident of Aurora, Judith was a cosmetologist. A resident of the  Jefferson City area since 1980, Judith was employed in sales with the 3M Company that later became ZBM Company. Later, she was employed in customer service at Scholastic, Inc.
Judith was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star in Aurora, MO. She was a volunteer at the Clarke Senior Center in both the cafeteria and playing bingo. She supported the Marine Corps League and was active in the Aurora Class of 1956 reunions. She enjoyed spending time with her family, neighbors, and friends and entertained them with her many jokes and stories.
Survivors include: one son, Scott A. Mayhew and his wife Margaret of  Jefferson City, MO,. one daughter, Evette L. Williams and her husband Rufus of  Jefferson City, MO., two grandchildren, Jordan Stokes, Kayla Dills of  Jefferson City, MO. and Rufus Williams, II; and three great grandchildren, Maluanna Stokes, Jordan Stokes, Jr., and Jhayse Stokes.
She was preceded in death by her parents and one sister, Janice L. Thompson.
Visitation will be at Freeman Mortuary from 10:00 until 11:00 AM Saturday, May 22, 2010.
A memorial service will be conducted at 11:00 AM Saturday, May 22, 2010 in the Freeman Chapel with the Reverend Dr. Monte Shinkle officiating.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to the Clarke Senior Center.
Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Freeman Mortuary.
