Jessica Lane Oetting, 27, of  Jefferson City passed away Tuesday, October 19th, 2010, at her home surrounded by family.
She was born April 22, 1983 in  Jefferson City the daughter of Alan Oetting, Vivian McKay and her stepfather Bruce McKay. She had one brother, Brian Wilder, three stepsisters and nieces and nephews. Jessie was loved by her fraternal Aunts and Uncles: Peter Oetting, Betty Oetting, Freida and Jimmy Fisher, Clifford Oetting and Carol and David Murphy, as well as numerous cousins. And, her maternal Aunt and Uncle, Donna and Gary Viessman, her much loved Justin and her Grandmother, Anna Gawer. And, her special Mom Nancy and Scott Hutson of Joplin.
Everywhere she went she left behind a legacy and a spirit that brought out the best in you. Her strength and joyous approach to life inspired everyone she touched. She says it best herself on her facebook page…"Life is short, Break the rules, Forgive quickly, Kiss slowly, Love truly, Laugh uncontrollably, And never regret anything that made you smile. "
At the age of 7, she was diagnosed with Muscular Dystrophy. She faced her challenges bravely and with courageous attitude. Her beautiful face always had a smile on it, and she was always ready to take time for her friends. She was a magnet for people. No matter where she went she made friends. . . Volunteering at Belair Elementary School, the kids surrounded her, often catching a ride on the back of her chair. . . In Joplin during the annual MD Telethons, she inspired so many with her stories. . . At the Ride for Life where she melted the hearts of many tough guy motorcyclists. . . . At Cycle Connection Harley-Davidson where customers were greeted by her friendly face the many summers she spent with her second family -- Scott and Nancy Hutson. She was active in the Muscular Dystrophy Association and was their Goodwill Ambassador.
As she grew into a young woman, she was determined to get her college degree and went on to earn her Masters. She was a member of the Alpha Kappa Mu Honor Society, and served as Secretary of the  Jefferson City Alumni Chapter. She enjoyed the opportunities she had to work with troubled youth and later the students at Lincoln University. Her work as Program Coordinator in the Lincoln University Office of Student Activities let her do what she loved. . . working with her students. She was just the right person to offer words of encouragement or give someone struggling a swift kick when they needed it. The outpouring of overwhelming love and support on her facebook page is a testament to her impact on the lives of the many people she touched.
Her family time was so important to her. It didn’t have to be a special occasion to have fun. She laughed and joked . . . always the center of attention. Her joyous spirit kept the party going and she will be remembered as the one who was quick to laugh and ready to stir things up. Jessie is everybody’s favorite and will always have a place at the table.
Jessie was passionate and had a zest for life. She loved music, Harley Davidson Motorcycles, family, friends, life and laughter. Her limitations never stopped her. She was always ready to be involved, go to parties with friends, travel and experience everything possible. She loved to prove that she was the majority and not the minority. Her wheelchair never defined her. It never stopped her. She taught us so much by her example. She is the best of us. And, now she is free to dance and walk with the angels, and when she is tired . . . rest in Gods loving arms.
