Mrs. Alma M. Copeland, age 91 years, a former  Jefferson City resident, died Thursday, May 23, 2013 at The Baptist Home in Ozark, Mo.
Alma was born December 18, 1921 in Oolitic, Indiana the daughter of Frank and Ethel Patton Miller. She was married on June 6, 1943 in Oolitic, Indiana to Harry Copeland who preceded her in death on October 20, 1980.
A resident of the  Jefferson City area since 1953, Alma graduated from Southern Baptist Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky.
Alma was employed with the Missouri Baptist Convention from 1953 until her retirement in 1980. She was an approved conference leader throughout the state with emphasis on preparing church leaders to train children ages nine through twelve years.
In addition to her love for children, Alma was an avid fan of the Missouri Tiger basketball team. She made certain that her schedule allowed her to watch all televised games.
She was a life long member of Memorial Baptist Church where she taught Sunday School, Church Training, and was the Church Librarian for twenty-five years.
Survivors include: one niece, Jane Lehman of Indiana; one nephew, Dennis Miller of Indiana; and a dear friend Susan Nelson of  Jefferson City. As a result of being the class grandmother in Mrs. Nelson’s classroom for many years she is survived by hundreds of students who called her “Grandma Alma.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and one brother, Robert M. Miller.
Visitation will be at Memorial Baptist Church from 10:00 until 11:00 am Wednesday, May 29, 2013.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 am Wednesday, May 29, 2013 at the Memorial Baptist Church with the Reverend Mark Towns and the Reverend Gerald Jeffries officiating. Graveside services and interment will be held at Hawthorn Memorial Gardens.
Those desiring may make memorial contributions to the Memorial Baptist Church

Mrs. Marian B. Nichols, age 83 years, of  Jefferson City, passed away Thursday, May 23, 2013 at Capital Region Medical Center. Marian was born on April 24, 1930 in Lemay, MO a daughter of Otto J. and Jennie (Milcie) Lassauer. She was married on November 20, 1954 in  Jefferson City to Luther Bruce Nichols who preceded her in death on May 1, 2006.
Marian was raised in St. Louis, MO from ages 7-18 at the German Protestant Orphan’s Home (Evangelical Children’s Home) and graduated from Normandy High School. In 1948, she relocated to  Jefferson City to live with her sister and brother-in-law, Bernice J. and William E. Gehrels and was employed as a bookkeeper at Tweedie Footwear Corporation for several years. When her daughter was born she became a homemaker, and during that time, she was a Girl Scout troop leader and she groomed poodles in the home. She later became a loan officer with Missouri State Employees Credit Union retiring in 1993.
She was a member and Sunday School Teacher at Central United Church of Christ. She was also a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Fraternal Order of Eagles, Aerie 2693.
Marian was an avid St. Louis Cardinal Baseball fan and enjoyed various crafts. She was known for making Christmas ornaments for family and friends. She cherished time with family, especially spending the winter months from 1993-2005 with her husband in Mission, TX.
Survivors include: her daughter, Barbara (Allen) Schmutzler of  Jefferson City; her step-grandchildren, Brock Schmutzler of Columbia, MO and Amber (Rodrigo) Gonzales of  Jefferson City; her step-great-grandchildren, Nolan, Ethan, and Emily Gonzales; her sisters-in-law, Betty Crum Martin of Mexico, MO and Janet Nichols of Holts Summit, MO; one brother-in-law, Jack D. Britt of Emporia, KS; several cousins, nieces and nephews; and very special friends, Vaneta and Wayne Cole, Charles and Nancy Beatte and Pat Pritchett.
In addition to her parents, Marian was preceded in death by two sisters, Bernice J. Britt and Loraine M. Lassauer, and four brothers-in-law, William E. Gehrels, Jewel E. Nichols, William J. Nichols and Andrew T. Crum, Sr.
Visitation will be held at Freeman Mortuary from 9:30 until 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, May 28, 2013.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, May 28, 2013 in the Freeman Chapel with the Reverend Coletta Eichenberger officiating. Graveside services and interment will be held at Hawthorn Memorial Gardens.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to Central United Church of Christ or the Evangelical Children’s Home in St. Louis, Mo.
Funeral arrangments are under the direction of Freeman Mortuary.

Merrell “Mel” Alexander Taylor Jr., age 91 years, of  Jefferson City, Mo., passed away Friday, May 24, 2013 at Oak Tree Villas.
Merrell was born December 14, 1921 in Troy, Mo. the son of Merrell A., Sr. and Mary Meriwether Taylor. Merrell’s early life was on the family farm in rural Missouri. The family later moved into Troy where in high school, Merrell loved sports, in particular, basketball and baseball. He went to Culver-Stockton College where he played basketball and baseball while earning a biology degree. His college was postponed by World War II while Merrell served his country fighting in Europe from 1943 until 1946. He was honorably discharged as a Corporal with a bronze star from the United States Army 20th Armored Division. After returning to college, he met Elinor “Elly” Sears Maxwell. They married on August 26, 1946 in Canton, Mo. and had three children, Ann, John and Alan.
He was employed as a medical sales representative, coach and biology teacher prior to receiving his Masters in Education from Northeast Missouri State University in Kirksville, Mo. Merrell spent the majority of his career as the Superintendent of the Morgan County R-1 School District in Stover, Missouri. He was Superintendent for over twenty years and said he liked being the “big duck in a little pond. ”
A resident of the  Jefferson City area since 1981, he was a member of the First United Methodist Church. Merrell had a passion for camping with his family, hunting and fishing with his sons, watching basketball and baseball, listening to Dixieland Jazz and reading about the old-time mountain men. Sadness in his life came with the early loss of his daughter Ann at age 19 (married to Paul Hayes) and the loss of his wife Elly at age 59 on December 29, 1985. Happily, Merrell later married Marge Swain and greatly loved her and her children, although Margie also passed too early on July 19, 2009.
Survivors include: five children, John Taylor (wife Tina) of  Jefferson City, Mo., Alan Taylor (wife Kecia) of Wichita, Kansas, Rita Spalding of Hide-a-way, Texas , Steve Swain of Bozeman, Montana, and Bob Swain (wife Margaret) of Muscat, Oman; four grandchildren, Jessica Tindall (husband Travis), Nicole Atwood (husband Ryan), Jake Taylor, and Kate Taylor; ten step-grandchildren; three great-grandchildren, Ryder Atwood, Charlotte Atwood, and Grace Atwood; and six step great-grandchildren. He was a “Good Man” and the rock of our family. Merrell will be greatly missed.
Graveside services and interment with military honors will be conducted at 2:00 pm Thursday, May 30, 2013 at the Troy City Cemetery (address below), Troy, Mo.

Mr. George T. Kaup, age 78 years, of Holts Summit, Mo., died Thursday, May 16, 2013 at South Hampton Place in Columbia, Mo.
George was born on September 8, 1934 in Denver, Colorado the son of Ellis J. and Grace V. Forte Kaup. He was married on June 26, 1955 in Berkley, California to Jacqueline M. Butler.
George served in the United States Navy as a mechanist on the USS Thomas  Jefferson. He was past Commander of the Disabled American Veterans in Lebanon, Mo.
For forty years, George lived on a farm outside of Lebanon, Mo. where he owned and operated his own automobile repair business and wood working shop. George also resided at Lake Pomme De Terre for several years after retirement and had been a resident of the Central Missouri area for the past six years.
Survivors include: his wife of fifty-seven years, Jacqueline Kaup; one daughter, Betty M. Kaup-Stuart and her husband James of Westphalia, Mo. ; one sister, Eleanor Williams and her husband Merle of Brownsville, Indiana; and two grandchildren, Kelsey Stuart Ramirez and her husband Cody and Jacob Stuart.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one son, David Thomas Kaup in 2010.
A private family service will be held at a later time.
Those desiring may make memorial contributions to Disabled American Veterans.

Mr. Mark D. Wheatley, age 56 years, of  Jefferson City, Mo., died Saturday, May 25, 2013 at his home.
Mark was born September 13, 1956 in Moberly, Mo. the son of A. Duane and Hattie L. Netherton Wheatley.
A lifelong resident of the  Jefferson City area, Mark was a 1974 graduate of  Jefferson City High School and a 1978 graduate of Southwest Missouri State University with a degree in Economics. He was a 1981 graduate of the University of Missouri Law School.
He was employed as an attorney with MoDOT and the Missouri Public Service Commission.
Mark was a member of the Missouri Bar. Survivors include: his parents, A. Duane and Hattie Wheatley of  Jefferson City, Mo. ; one sister, Susan Davis and her husband Gene of  Jefferson City, Mo. ; one brother, Ken Nichols and his wife Deanna of New London, Mo. ; one niece and five nephews.
Private graveside services and interment will be conducted on Thursday, May 30, 2013 at Riverview Cemetery.
Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Freeman Mortuary.

Mr. Steven G. Asher, age 56 years, of  Jefferson City, Mo., died Monday, May 27, 2013 at his home.
Steve was born September 22, 1956 in  Jefferson City, Mo., the son of Harold Asher and Dorothy Holt Asher Burkel. He was married on December 31, 1991 in  Jefferson City, Mo. to Linda Holland.
A lifelong resident of the  Jefferson City area, Steve was a 1975 graduate of  Jefferson City High School.
He was employed as an engineer with Union Pacific Railroad for twenty-three years prior to his leaving in 2001.
Steve enjoyed the outdoors, especially hunting, fishing, and going to the rivers and lakes. Most importantly, he loved spending time with his family and friends.
Survivors include: his wife of twenty-one years, Linda Asher; his mother, Dorothy Burkel; one daughter, Megan Asher of Holts Summit, Mo. ; three sisters, Debbie Asher Mullally, Renee Hendrickson and her husband Scott, and Amy Wilson and her husband Mike all of  Jefferson City, Mo. ; and Patsy Asher of  Jefferson City, Mo.
He was preceded in death by one son Jeremy Holland on August 12, 2007, his father, Harold Asher on December 20, 2011, and his step father, Donald Burkel on February 17, 2012.
Visitation will be at Freeman Mortuary from 11:00 until 1:00 PM Friday, May 31, 2013.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1:00 pm Friday, May 31, 2013 in the Freeman Chapel. Interment will be at Hawthorn Memorial Gardens.
Those desiring may make memorial contributions to the Steven G. Asher Memorial Fund.

Mr. Willard J. Carter, age 83 years, of  Jefferson City, Mo., died Thursday, February 28, 2013 at St. Joseph’s Bluffs.
Willard was born December 4, 1929 in Moro, Illinois the son of Clarence Athan and Alfrieda Josephine Sundermeyer Carter. He was married on September 23, 1956 in  Jefferson City, Mo. to Loretta Mae Mohr.
Willard was born and raised in the Edwardsville, Illinois area and went to school there. He served in the United States Air Force from May 1952 until May 8, 1956 when he was honorably discharged. He received the National Defense Medal, Korean Service Medal, United Nation Service Medal, and Good Conduct Medal.
He worked for Hunter Brothers Construction and Willard Stockman Construction before starting his own business, Willard Carter Construction Company, with his son, Gary working with him for many years. He loved his work and planned to never retire. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church; a charter member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Wyman Basinger Post 35; and the Disabled American Veterans, Oliver Buehrle Post 17. He was also a member of the 28th Wing Assn., Rapid City, South Dakota.
Willard loved spending time with his family, friends, and neighbors, helping when he could. He enjoyed traveling with his wife of fifty-six years until he was unable to do so due to his health. He also enjoyed helping his neighbors and friends, working outdoors and gardening until his health would no longer allow.
Survivors include: his wife of fifty-six years, Loretta Mohr Carter; five children, David Carter and his wife Jan, Gary Carter and his wife Carol, and Cheryl Ousley, all of  Jefferson City, Mo., Scott Carter and his wife Yee Lee of Santa Clara, California and Todd Carter of Edgerton, Kansas; seven grandchildren, Cheri Kirsch and her husband Paul of  Jefferson City, Mo., Ryan Carter of China, Ben Carter and Daniel Carter of Columbia, Mo., Brooke Carter of Holts Summit, Mo., and Jason and Justin Carter of Santa Clara, California: three step-grandchildren, Amy Green, Michael Green, Andrew Green and his wife Jennifer all of  Jefferson City, Mo. ; and two great grandchildren, Sion and John Kirsch of  Jefferson City, Mo
He was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, Charles Carter, Lawrence Carter, Raymond Carter, and Harold Carter; and three sisters, Virginia Lawrence, Rose Marie Niemeyer, and Florence Wisnasky.
Visitation will be at Freeman Mortuary from 5:00 until 7:00 pm Sunday, March 3, 2013 and from 9:00 until 10:00 am Monday at Trinity Lutheran Church.
Funeral services will be conducted at 10:00 AM Monday, March 4, 2013 at Trinity Lutheran Church with the Reverend Samuel Powell officiating. Graveside services and interment with military honors will be conducted at Hawthorn Memorial Gardens.
Those desiring may make memorial contributions to Trinity Lutheran Church, the Alzheimers Disease and Related Disorders Assn., or the Huntington’s Disease Assn.

Mr. Harold C. Asher, age 82 years, of  Jefferson City, Mo., died Monday, December 20, 2010 at Capital Region Medical Center.
Harold was born November 13, 1928 in Salem, Mo. a son of Clyde G. and Mildred V. Hayes Asher. He was married on July 3, 1975 in Las Vegas, Nevada to Patsy R. Huot.
He graduated from Cape Girardeau Central High School, Cape Girardeau, Mo. and the  Jefferson City Junior College. Harold served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict.
He was employed with Home Savings Bank from 1962 until his retirement as President and Chairman of the Board of Directors in 1993. He was a current member of Board of Directors of Home Savings Bank. Harold was a member of Central United Church of Christ.
Throughout his life he was dedicated to his family, his friends, and his community. He served on numerous boards, committees, and gave of his time and talents to many civic organizations. He was a hard worker that was committed to always doing his best. He loved spending time with his family and friends and relaxing at the Lake of the Ozarks.
Survivors include: his wife, Patsy Asher; four children, Debbie Mullally and her husband Kevin of  Jefferson City, Mo., Steve Asher and his wife Linda of Holts Summit, Mo., Renee Hendrickson and her husband Scott of  Jefferson City, Mo. and Amy Wilson and her husband Mike of  Jefferson City, Mo. ; one sister, Virginia Haar of  Jefferson City, Mo. ; two brothers, William Asher of Vienna, Mo. and Robert Asher of Orlando, Florida; and eight grandchildren, Ashley Vincent, Erin Mullally, Megan Asher, Megan Hendrickson, Jarrod Hendrickson, Connor Hendrickson, Madeline Wilson and Caroline Wilson.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one grandson, Jeremy Holland.
Visitation will be at Freeman Mortuary from 4:00 until 7:00 PM Wednesday, December 22, 2010.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11:30 AM Thursday, December 23, 2010 at the Central United Church of Christ with the Reverend Dr. Stephen Buchholz officiating. Interment will be at Hawthorn Memorial Gardens.
Those desiring to make memorial contributions, may do so to the Boy Scouts of America or the Central United Church of Christ.

Pastor Gary W. Baker, age 70 years, of  Jefferson City, Mo., died Saturday, December 25, 2010 at St. Mary’s Health Center.
Gary was born August 24, 1940 in Linn, Mo. the son of Charley F. and Ida Mae Phillips Baker. He was married on November 23, 1961 in Edwardsville, Illinois to Joan P. Ellsworth.
Gary graduated from Linn High School, Linn, Mo. and St. Louis Christian College, Florissant, Mo. He received his Masters in Divinity from Lincoln Christian Seminary, Lincoln, Illinois.
He served as Senior Minister with the Sailor Springs Christian Church, Sailor Springs, Illinois prior to becoming the Senior Minister with Capital City Christian Church in  Jefferson City in 1966. He faithfully served Capital City Christian Church for forty years prior to his retirement in 2006. During his forty years at Capital City Christian Church, Gary wanted the church to meet the needs of our community. He was instrumental in starting many forms of outreach, including Capital City Christian Church Child Care, and the Journey to Bethlehem. After retirement, Gary also served as interim minister for the Eugene Christian Church and the New Bloomfield Christian Church.
He was a member of Capital City Christian Church; past chairman and member of the Board of Trustees of St. Louis Christian College; past chairman and member of the Board of Directors of the Missouri Christian Convention; and a member of the Missouri Operation for Vigorous Evangelism. Gary was founder of Christian Prison Ministry for the State of Missouri,. He loved his family, especially playing croquet and fishing with his grandsons.
Survivors include: his wife of forty-nine years, Joan Baker; one daughter, Jill Findley and her husband Eric of  Jefferson City, Mo. ; and two grandchildren, Tyler Findley and Levi Findley.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one son, Scott Baker on February 3, 2003.
Visitation will be at the Capital City Christian Church from 4:00 until 7:00 PM Wednesday, December 29, 2010.
A funeral service will be conducted at 10:00 AM Thursday, December 30, 2010 at the Capital City Christian Church. Interment will be at the  Oklahoma Church of Christ Cemetery near Linn, Mo.
Those desiring may make memorial contributions to the Capital City Christian Church Building Fund.
