Dolly Mae Cockrell Jones

Dolly Mae Cockrell Jones died Thursday, April 9, 2009, at University Medical Center in Jackson. She was 87 years old. Born in Vicksburg on March 13, 1922, she was the daughter of the late Mark and Mary Cockrell. She was a member of Gibson Memorial United Methodist Church.

Mrs. Jones was a homemaker and lifetime resident of Vicksburg — except for moving to Newport, Ark., with her husband and son in 1968. After 14 years in Arkansas, her husband retired and the family returned to their home in Vicksburg in 1982.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Willie Lee Jones Jr.; a son, Bobby Lee Jones; a sister, Camille Martin; and two brothers, George Cockrell and Louis Cockrell.

Survivors include her son, William “Bill” Jones and his wife, Anna, a daughter, Cheryl Blakeley and her husband, Terry, and a daughter-in-law, Gwen Jones Edris, and her husband, Earl, all of Vicksburg; seven grandchildren, Jeff Jones (Liz) of Charlotte, N.C., Jason Jones (Eleanor) of Brandon, Cindy Lee of Dothan, Ala., Kim Garcia (Mike) of Dothan, Karie Lynch (Wayne) of Vicksburg, Dustin Lee Jones (Shelley) of Columbus, S.C., and Corey Jones of Vicksburg; eight great-grandchildren, Jessica and Brandon Lee Jones of Charlotte, Garrison and Mackenzie Lee and Landrie Garcia of Dothan, Preston and Maddox Lynch of Vicksburg and Macie Jones of Columbia; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Service will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Glenwood Funeral Home with the Rev. Greg Hazelrig, pastor of Gibson Memorial United Methodist Church, officiating. Burial will follow at Green Acres Memorial Park. Visitation will be at the funeral home Monday, from 9 a.m. until the hour of the service.

Pallbearers will be Jeff Jones, Jason Jones, Dustin Jones, Corey Jones, Garrison Lee, Mike Garcia and Wayne Lynch.

Memorials may be made to the Gibson Memorial United Methodist Church Building Fund, 335 Oak Ridge Road, Vicksburg, MS 39183.

Mary Pue

Mary Pue died Tuesday, April 7, 2009, at River Region Medical Center. She was 51.

Miss Pue was a lifelong resident of Vicksburg.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Cletus Pue Sr. and Christine Pue.

Survivors include three brothers, William Ward and Andrew Douglas, both of Kansas, and Cletus Pue Jr. of Brandon; a sister, Anita Ratcliff of Ferriday, La.; and nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be at 5 p.m. Tuesday at Solid Rock United Pentecostal Church.

Bruice Lee Chambers

Bruice Lee Chambers died Thursday, April 9, 2009. He was 46.

He was preceded in death by his father, Charles Ruines; and his grandparents, John Frank and Leola Chambers.

Survivors include his two daughters, SyEsha Chambers and Chelcie Chambers; three brothers, Robert Carpenter of Baton Rouge, John Chambers and Debrick Chambers, both of Vicksburg; six sisters, Belinda Chambers-Okafor of Ocala, Fla., Debra Carpenter Lee of Jackson, Lillie Carpenter of Baton Rouge, Judith Carpenter Williams of Okinawa, Japan, and Linda Carpenter and Sharon Carpenter, both of Vicksburg.

Danny Lee Miller

Services for Danny Lee Miller will be at noon Saturday at Mount Zion M.B. Baptist Church in Cary with the Rev. Tyrone Catchings officiating. Burial will follow at Cary Community Cemetery. Visitation will be from noon until 6 p.m. Friday at Williams Funeral Service with family present from 4 until 6.

Mr. Miller died Sunday, April 12, 2009. He was 25.

Vera Corine Porter

Vera Corine Porter died Thursday, April, 9, 2009, at River Region Medical Center. She was 85.

Mrs. Porter worked alongside her husband, the Rev. Paul D. Porter, as he pastored several United Methodist churches in Mississippi until his death in 1977. She continued serving as an active member of Richland United Methodist Church in Richland until moving to Vicksburg in 2000. She attended Bible study weekly at her residence at Heritage House in Vicksburg and shared her faith in God with others daily. She attended First Baptist Church in Vicksburg with family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents Walter and Odell Burnside; her husband, the Rev. Paul D. Porter; her brother, Carlous Burnside; and her sister, Marydene Sharplin.

Survivors include her son, Tommy Porter of Pelahatchie; two daughters, Paula Dunn of Flora and Lynn Stuckey of Vicksburg; two brothers the Rev. Cecil Burnside of Florence and Thomas Burnside of Jackson; two sisters Vivian Gilbert of Lena and Maedell Smith of Florence; six grandchildren, Steven Porter of Jackson, Danielle and Diane Dunn of Flora, and Joshua, Jeremy and Hannah Stuckey of Vicksburg; and other relatives and friends.

Visitation will be this evening from 5 until 7 Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Glenwood Funeral Home. Burial will be at 2 p.m. at Ludlow Cemetery in Ludlow. Dr. Matt Buckles of First Baptist Church will officiate.

Ruben Jones McGraw

Ruben Jones McGraw died Monday, April 13, 2009, at the VA nursing home in Jackson.

Visitation will be from 3 until 5 p.m. Friday at Fisher Funeral Home with a graveside service following at Cedar Hill Cemetery.

Mr. McGraw was a native of Louisville and served on the battleship USS Washington in World War II. He retired from the Gulf, Mobile and Ohio Railroad, later the Illinois Central Railroad, as chief clerk.

Mr. McGraw was preceded in death by his wife of 42 years, Ruth Thompson McGraw (1983) and is survived by their four children, Nancy (Stuart) Lassetter of Holland, Patricia (Paul) Kurts of Huntsville, Ala., William McGraw (Sherry) of Winchester, Ky., and Robert McGraw of Brandon; 13 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and a niece, Nancy Lea Libbey of Vicksburg.

Mr. McGraw, a longtime resident of Vicksburg after his retirement, was also preceded in death by his second wife of 20 years, Ruth Sullivan McGraw (2008).

He will be greatly missed by family and close friends.

Sarah Hudson Riley

Sarah Hudson Riley died Monday, April 13, 2009, at her home in Gulfport. She was 87.

A Port Gibson native, Mrs. Riley was a longtime resident of Vicksburg. She retired as a manicurist and had worked at Carriage Beauty Salon. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Lyman and former member of Bowmar Avenue Baptist Church of Vicksburg.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Porter L. Riley; a son, Lee Riley; and four brothers.

Survivors include one son, Jim Riley of Gulfport; five grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Wintergreen Cemetery in Port Gibson with the Rev. Terry White officiating. Burial will follow under the direction of Glenwood Funeral Home. Visitation will be at the funeral home in Vicksburg from 10 a.m. Friday until the service.

Pallbearers will be Jim Riley, Jay Riley, Porter Riley, Brandon Lynch, Bobby McMillian, Neil Beyer, Brian Cates and Steve Bowen.

Joseph Jesse Walley

Joseph Jesse “Joe” Walley died Wednesday, April 15, 2009. He was 56.

A native of Laurel, Mr. Walley grew up in Vicksburg and, for many years, served as a deputy for the Warren County Sheriff’s Department. He was later an employee of Riverside Construction and, most recently, he was employed by Ergon maintenance.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving in Vietnam. He was of the Baptist faith.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Ouida Busby Walley; his father, Nollie Walley; two brothers, James Walley and Jerry Walley; and a sister, Mary Walley Simmons.

Survivors include his wife, Bernice Shiers Walley of Vicksburg; one son, Sean Douglas Walley of Vicksburg; one daughter, Jessica Walley Haas (Karl) of Vicksburg; a brother, Don Walley of Vicksburg; two sisters, Brenda Dawkins (Fairley) of Vicksburg and Betty Tarver (George) of Natchez; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Services will be at 11:30 a.m. Friday at Glenwood Funeral Home with the Rev. Marvin Curtis officiating. Burial will follow at Jersey Settlers Cemetery in Natchez. Visitation will be at the funeral home from 9 a.m. Friday until the service.

Pallbearers will be Charles Holifield, Fairley Dawkins, George Tarver, Louis Miller Jr., R.L. Munn and Dane Dixon.

Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Warren County Sheriff’s Department and members of Ergon maintenance.

Memorials may be made to the Vicksburg-Warren Humane Society.

Ruth T. Wade

NEWELLTON — Ruth T. Wade died Tuesday, April 14, 2009, at Olive Branch Senior Care Center in Tallulah. She was 81.

Mrs. Wade was born in Meridian and had lived in Tensas Parish for three years. She was a retired cafeteria employee of the Madison Parish School System and a member of Primitive Baptist Church.

Survivors include a grandson, Chris Cannon of Winnsboro, La.; and two great-grandsons.

Services were at 11 a.m. today at Floral Hill Memory Gardens in Pearl, Miss., under the direction of Crothers-Glenwood Funeral Home of Tallulah.

Daryl C. Nervis

Services for Daryl C. Nervis will be at 11 a.m. today at Faith Christian Center, with the Rev. Ollie Hardaway officiating. Burial will follow at New Zion Cemetery.

Mr. Nervis died Monday, April 6, 2009, in a vehicle accident. He was 20.
